Cholee Park

  Cholee Park

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

West Palm Beach

Directions to Trailhead:

I-95 to Forest Hill Blvd.. West about six miles. Park is on south side of the road across from Okeehelee park.

Trail Description:

Fast with quite a bit of technical areas thrown in. Some decent small hills (12')that sneak up on you due to the woods and a narrow bridge thrown in for fun. Trail is very tight in some areas with dense woods and opens up in others. Gets real sandy in some areas when there is a lack of rain but it keeps the track from getting crowded and is still rideable. Trail is fairly well marked. There is an shellrock access road that the trail uses in several spots that can be used to make the loop shorter or longer depending on which section you like to ride. Watch for all the snakes, armadilloes, and occasional possum.

Trail Length:

5-6 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack & Fire Roads

Skill Level:

Trails for all skill levels

ORIGINAL TRAIL HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY CLOSED!!!!

The original trail has been permanently closed to bikers and has been taken over for equestrian use only. A new trail has been opened up for mountain bikers that is about a mile east of the old one. The new trail is on the East side of Pinehurst Drive about a mile South of Forest Hill blvd. It's located next to Freedom Park in Greenacres.

SEE THE REVIEWS FOR THE PINEHURST TRAIL FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

The new trail is east from the old cholee entrance. You should go to okaheelee parking lot and ride your bike south on pinehurst and the entrance is on the left hand side.

Review:

The new trail installed @ cholee is short and sweet. The trail is only 4 mi. long but tight turns and narrow single track wont allow you to speed through. I live close to the trail and im just thankful there is something decent to ride without driving forty miles to get there. The trails are well marked for beginners and advanced so this a good trail for just about anybody. Expert sections are also sectioned off and I gotta say the root sections are a good workout(slightly trickier than the root section @ JD.

Sorry to say on my way into the entrance of Cholee park I was stopped by one of the contractors heading up construction work there. He stated that the park and trail will not open for at least two years. I was told to let everyone who rides here not to.I have no clue if there will be a park by that time. If anyone knows the outcome please let me Know.

from what the local shops tell me this place is history for bikers. the horse people have taken it over. i used to ride this trail every day because it was a convenient local ride and the sugar sand flats made for a good leg work out. when i was riding there everyday after work there was usually about 5 or six other cars there with bike racks on the back. you wanna know how many times i saw a truck with a horse trailer in that park? twice. two times out of the many many many times that i rode there and they say that they are giving it to the horse people because the bikers didn't use it. that's horse shit, no pun intended. i think one or more people on the board that made this desicion own horses. i hope all your horses run away!!! there is supposed to be a new trail in green acres somewhere from what the shops are telling me but i don't know when or where it will be built.

I've heard rumors of this trail opening again but I haven't heard when. I've also heard that the guy who was mainly responsible for K-mart's fine selection of technical terrain will be heading up the operation. Is this true? Please let it be true. I must ride on flowing strands of hard packed dirt, up around berms,
down root infested technical drop offs, man made 6 inch wide bridges over swamp water, whoop de doos till I get sick to my stomach! Am I dreaming here or what?

does anyone know the future of this trail? are the horses taking it all for themselves? i sneak in with my bike every now and again and most of the trail was untouched by the bulldozers. it is getting very overgrown though. the guy who wrote the review before mine stated that he was meeting with county to discuss the trail. does anyone know what came of that meeting? it looks like they dug some lakes back where all the sugar sand was. now there are big hills about 30 feet tall there. if there is going to be a trail here i think it has the potential to be a really good trail. and it wouldn't take a whole lot of work since, as i stated earlier, much of the trail was left alone by the bulldozers.

I am meeting with the county this week about relocating and reopening this trail. The proposed area is across the road to the east, just north of the canal. We'll see if we can get this active again

Help keep this trail alive. Call or write the county comissioners or parks and recreation . We're still trying to get an official confirmation of whether or not the park will reopen. Please call and voice your opinion. It's the only trail left in the area.

This was a good trail but with everyone's support and help it could be excellent. The contractor said he was piling up a bunch of fill in the back from digging a lake and that he couldn't go over 40' high! Sounds like it could be made real interesting for us bikers.

Now that the bulldozers have stared on K-mart there won't be anything left in the area if we leave Cholee for only the horses. The horse people are getting stables, paddocks, and all kinds of other facilities. We need to get our voices heard NOW!!!

K-Mart-is on it's death bed so ride while it is around
Dyer-"the dump" but at least it's still around

Review:

This trail no longer exists. Palm Beach County found that it was not being used enough to warrant keeping it around so it leveled the trail. This should act as a warning to South Florida mountain bikers that we do not have the support of county commissioners so try to keep the trails we do have left, like Markham and Oleta, clean and do not attempt to alter these trails to make them harder or easier because they will be closed as a result of your actions. It is a shame to lose any trail so ride the ones that we have while we have them. Be safe.

Review:

This trail is a technical sandy trail that isnt long enough to be torturous but the sand couldnt be placed better by a pshycologist. It is(the sand) a mental obstical as well as a physical one.The malaleuca trees are a great Reminder of K-mart but shorter and slightly more technical. there are a few short climbs(sandy climbs) as well as drops. As mentioned in other reviews the front is quite wet after a good rain. but none the less still a great section. This trail is roumered to get quite bigger with some bridges added on by the constructor of the masterpeices at K-mart (THANKS MIKE!!!!!!!) after the K-mart trail gets dozed.(shortly 1 year max!!!!!!) so this trail will be even better in a couple of years maybe less!!!! this will be the new pop spot

This was my first time on this trail and I was pleasantly surprised. The trails are well maintained and well marked. Due to its proximity to KMart, I would definitely use this trail as a warm up before hitting KMart. Not too technical, some sandy patches.

Review:

Well after moving down here 8 months ago, I must have really got spoiled on Markham, and Oleta, because this place, plain and simple, was soooooooo boring. There is nothing to it really, just flat, uninspiring single-track. All I wanted to do, from the moment I started, was get out of there. Went there basically, to see if I could add another trail to my rides, but I think not. Think I stick to Oleta, Markham, and even Quiet Waters.

As one of the original creators of the Cholee trail, I still have a warm spot in my heart for it. Because it is the farthest palm beach ride from my home, I dont use it as often as I'd Like. Lately though we did some trail maintenence and a ride and it refreshed my memory why I like it so much. I has a little bit of everything, some very tight, some wide open, short steep hills, mud, sand, hardpack, roots, logs, bridges, palmettos, all at the same time on the same ride. We have permission to add about two more miles in the back area, just need the people to help do it. This place will likely get hot after K mart disappears.

Review:

When we ride West Palm, we save Cholee for last (after the mountain and K-mart). The trail has a lot to offer. The beginning can be quite wet after heavy rains. There is a tight section through some paper trees. There are several crossings through drainage ditches. Around the half way point there are some fun climbs and drops. The trail then turns into a tight "jungle" area, which can be quite technical with slippery "gatorbacks". You finish up by going up and down a sandy ridge several times. When I am finished with West Palm's "Big Three", I am so tired I can hardly drive back to Miami!!
