Mike you sound like this trail holds a special place next to your heart. You seem senitive to this trail! You should review a trail on what it offers or does not offer, not the effort that made it happen.

I have not ridden this trail for awhile. Not because it's poor, but because I was doing other things. What was I thinking? This trail does have alot of sand, BOB. That's because Florida is sand. I continue to be satisfied when I come up here. New trail in the back is faster than the front. I'm waiting to see a gazebo out in the middle of the pond, with a 2x6 for a suspension bridge, you go guys! I know you read these posts. My friends and I ended up doing 20 miles today, just exploring all the new trails. Hey BOB, why don't you come back down from where you live, and ride this place at good pace for 4 laps. Now go home and eat. Yea, Icey Hot really does work on sore muscles. My appreciation goes out to all of the people who mold this trail into what it has become.

I really only ride in Central Florida-Hard Rock, Santos, Econ, etc.

Review:

First time ridden was yesterday, went with my girlfriend, her brother and his ten year old son. Had a good time, trails are very well marked and seems to be a good amount of them. Really only went out to street ride but decided to follow along with brother and son. It was my girlfriend's first time ever off road on a MTB and she handled the middle trail and the novice tortoise with little difficulty. That should give you an idea of the ease of the trails- no serious downhills or drops except in bunker hill and those I found were man made mostly of wood ramps. Fun trail fir South Florida-will go back again and ride. Keep up the good work Club Scrub.

the trail is way to soft and mostly all SAND!!!!!!
It is a great work out because it is not flat you spend most of the time either going up or down in soft sugar sand. The trial is very soft in the turns you can not carry your speed. If you like to go fast and have fun try some place else. If you want to train this place is for you. I'm about 2 hours away so I have better choices to go ride on hard pack. I will say this the guys in that area are lucky to have this place to ride!

I'm a relatively new MB enthusiast, and I've only ridden these trails four times, but I'm absolutely hooked. They're well-maintained and a lot of fun, and even though it's fairly crowded, it's large enough for riders to spread out and getting larger. If you're a racer, though, try to schedule times when the trail's nearly empty or you'll spend a lot of time running over beginners.

I love the intermediate sections. They're just challenging enough that someone with a good sense of balance and some guts can get through most of the obstacles (then again, I'm also a unicyclist, so balance isn't a problem for me.) I haven't fallen yet, though I've had a lot of fun dragging various friends and relatives through the trail and watching them faceplant. My turn is coming, though, I can feel it. I almost dropped the front wheel off the edge of one of the high bridges, and I've already watched somebody do that.

I really, really want to get good enough to do the black diamond trails. But even though I can get through most of the intermediate trails with my feet up, I checked out the advanced trail. I'm not ready. I'm going to have to read up on techniques and practice some new skills before I go charging down some of those obstacles. Like I said, someone with good balance can fake their way through the blue trails, but you had better know what you're doing if you're going to go on the black. If you're a beginner, there's plenty of fun to be had on the green and blue, so don't get silly. If you're an expert, go for it. And can I watch? With a few pointers and practice, I'll be there. I can't wait.

Ridden twice. Good trail for beginners to intermediates. Seems to be maintained very well with more improvements in progress. Good attempts at signage / markings but some confusion. The was my wife's first MTB experience and she had a great time. Palmetto roots (Elephants)are evil in a few spots. Very friendly bikers on this trial and at trailhead.

The trail crew has done a good job stuffing a great trail system into a small tract of land. Plenty of uphill and downhill segments, bridges, sand etc keep it interesting. We'll be back.

This is the best trail in the area, not really any flat areas on this trail.Your either climbing small hills or blasting down one.Lots of bridges to cross and some BIG root sections. Also a number of fallen trees to cross over. The only problem with trail is when its dry, there is alot of sand mostly in the more open, back side of trail. There is a general store in the park, about 2-3 miles west on the park road, from trail head.

These trail is fantastic! There are plenty of technical sections (palmetto roots), some good jumps and bridges, and best of all, uphill and downhill sections. Going up and down is so rare on South Florida trails. There are lots of short downhill sections to carve. The uphills are a nice change of pace. As all of our trails in the area, these are plaqued with sugar sand. Mulch and fencing laid over the sandy spots helps. I look forward to going back after some rain. All in all, a fun ride.

You have to ride over a lot of horizontal palm trees on the trail. Wear a helmet! cause after some jumps there are plenty of limbs to crack your head open.
The beginner trail is a dirt path with almost no jumps or bumps, just a leisurely ride. All the trails, beginner to intermediate are on the same trail and you pick your path as you go.
I would reccomend that you have a full suspension bike for all trails except beginner trail.

Drove up with my husband a couple of weeks ago. Don't go in the middle of the day. The trail has several exposed areas and it was HOT! Other that that, alot of fun. I will never complain about the roots at Quiet waters again. ELEPHANT roots everywhere. Some trees need trimming, limbo time. Watch out for varmits, lots of turtles. You can definitely tell that there is work being done. Good job to the Scrub Club. Overall a great ride, make sure you do some road riding through the park. Lots of deer.

Review:

This is a great trail. Especially with the recent addition of the "expert" area. Some good man made drops and bridges, stairs, etc. That totally made my rating jump for this trail. It was a fun fast ride already, but now its WORTH the drive from Broward. This park needs help with maintenace, though. Some trails lead right into a swampy water bed with no where to go but doubling back. There are some incredible root systems to work over, which can be frustrating for beginners, but I would imagine that for an advanced rider they make a great obstacle. I still can't get through them all with out dabbing but I'm looking forward to when I CAN take them. Not much else nearby so bring the food and drink with you.

What's up? This trail sucks the sweat from my slouch socks that I ride with while wearing my high-top Reebok jazzercise sneakers! I also wear tight shiny white bike shorts with Hanes underwear underneath that bunch up and cause the most vicious saddle sores you've ever popped with a rusty nail! My hairdo is a nifty mullet (short in the front and long in the back) and I feel that I look awesome with a moustache, but to tell you the truth, a moustache has got to be the ugliest thing a cheese-ball from NMB like meselfs would don with pride. I also have pimples on my inner thighs. I like to wear longish sideburns that were popular several years ago when Beverly Hills 90210 was popular. The bike I ride is a rigid-forked Fuji that I bought from Walmart several years ago with U-brakes and neon components! I have never ridden a real trail in my life, but I sent away for this Moab sticker that I proudly display on my 1988 white VW convertible cabriolet as well as a RockShox sticker so that people will think I am a real mountain biker! When I meet a chick at the bars, I tell them that I am a "mountain biker" and hope they don't notice the dimples on my thighs, because I regularly wear hemmed jean shorts out at night because I think they look cool with my huarache sandles! A friend of mine sometimes loans me his knock-off birkenstock sandles that have the buckles on the top instead of the side! I am cool and all ya'll nigga bitches in the F-L-A who ride can eat my scrote hairz!

First, great job to everyone that has made this trail possible and the number of people is greater than just Ian, so stop trying to be the trail's police officer and cheerleader. Second, respect this and all trails because we lose more trails than we ever gain and this is a good one. Third, this trail is very good now and will, I think, be "the" best trail in S.Florida because of its topography and length. I compare this trail to the yellow section of the Santos trail in Ocala-not the most technical but challenging nevertheless because of its gradual change in elevation and its fast gradual downhill. There are sections here that are technical, like the palmetto palm section, but that should not discount the fact that this trail provides a great "overall" ride that is hard to find at Markham and QWs because of their short distances. If JD gets permission to trail out the third section in its plan then there will be no trail other than the Santos trail in Ocala with as many miles of trails. There is a lot to be said for any loop that last over one hour, technical or not. Ride this trail and enjoy it for what it has to offer instead of ragging it for this or that reason. Happy trails and protect what few trails we have left.

Hey Trek-Magic guy---you must have rode the wrong trail, or you have a way too elevated self-opinion of your skills. If you asked me, it is a decent trail, but not of the caliber of Markham Park or even lowly Quiet Waters.

This trail, without a doubt, has become the most difficult and best MB trail in North America. Kudos to those who have worked on it. Exceptional. As a former pro-am rider from Nevada this trail presents some of the most technically challenging riding I have ever been confronted with. I would not recommend this trail for anyone without at least 5-10 years of hardcore mountain biking expereince. I was witha friend this weekend from austarlia and he comapared this trail to Disembowlment Dyke in Bulgaria, the former undisputed king of MB trails in the world. The sand is simply hellacious, the drop offs are scary, the switchbacks are severe enogh to give you whip lash and the speed this place carries is absolutely phenomenol. I was bucked from my saddle at least 15 times during the first circuit. I tend to put on alot wait in my thighs and gut and thus and hill over 2 or 3 feet high is usually unpassible for me. Regardless, to finish the first lap I had to cramm down about 17 packs of GU to maintian my suggar levels. I am a diabetic and often go into a coma after rides, but when you are as naturally blessed as I am, than its a duty to ride. I also become very flatulent on rides becasue of the GU i have to eat and this makes for some very difficult technical riding. With this said, I reiterate that this trail is diabolical and to finish one lap I would alot at least 4 hours. You will need 10 or 12 breaks to consume enough carbs and fats to get bac k to the car. Luckily there is a concession stand a few miles from the trail so after a ride you can hitch aride up there. Warning, dont try top ride there the pavement is very hot and melts MB tires quickly and you will probablly be too fatigued from the 2 mile circuit to even entertain riding for another week or so. But they have great sugar sticks up there, which all the Euro riders eat, and doritos, which is what Randall Cruise (3 time Worlds) recommends to replace salts and fats. I usually eat 5 or 6 big grab bags just to keep my weight up so i am more powerful than 0other riders on the circuit.

i rode the new section that was just built with the black diamond bridge and it was sweet. i just kept going around in circles after finding that section. i came across some guy doing trail maintenance who informed me that the section wasn't open yet but he said i could ride anyhow. it was almost reminiscent of k mart. it looked like they were also building a step bridge. i couldn't really tell it was only half built. if this trail keeps getting better like it has the past year they are going to need more parking space. if you rode this trail on a sunday aftenoon a year ago you probably shared the parking lot with one or two other cars. go on a sunday afternoon now and there is about 15 to 20 cars. at the rate that this trail is improving, a year from now your just gonna have to park the car at the front gate and start your ride from there. this trail will rival markham if the scrubbies keep it up. in some respects it already does. i dont think any trail in south florida has a technical root section like the "gator hole". i noticed someone hacked one of the three overlapping palmettos near the beginning just after the bridge. YOU SUCK! i hope there are more black diamond areas planned for this trail. and i hope to god that some jackass that's on a trail for the first time doesn't try riding over any black diamonds busts their ass and winds up getting them torn down. if your not an experienced rider don't try to ride over something unless your sure you can. everyone has to start somewhere. i just don't want to see any bridges get torn down by the park. and if you do go over something and bust your ass hard keep your mouth shut about it so the rest of us can have the choice of busting our asses too.

Finally got out there to ride this wonderfully plotted trail. Cudo's fantastic trail, love the downhill log run did it three times, faster each time. Very nice flowing fast trails with mild climbs that slowly eat at you. I found it to be as challenging as you make it and very forgiving, big ring gives great rewards, especially running down those logs...... I love that part!!!! The only thing that could possibly compliment that section would be a rolling hump to reward those with the proper motivation to find a bit of air, but still let the cautious enjoy the section safely, that may compliment it. FFFFFFaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrr be it from me to even fathom the privelage of even suggesting anything to do with that trail, You people do a fantastic job and anyone reading this who dosent know, There is a steady flood of man power that goes into this course routinely religeously and passionately, BRAVO for taking land like that and making it into an enjoyable challenging trail that is rideable for all, and setting it in the middle of the most beautiful park in Florida. BRAVO, BRAVO, I shall return!!!!

The following are repete posts from the clubscrub.org forum. Please help spread the word. Thank you.
Wear helmets! Stop skidding! Do not alter the trail!

Do Not Alter the Trail!!
In between helmets and skidding like I don't have enough to bitch about now someone has gone into the gator hole and cut out some of the palm trunks!! What's up with this?? If it was suppose to be easy we would have made it easy. If you are thinking of trimming trail you better get it approved by the club. Trimming overgrowth is one thing, altering the trail in terms of direction or difficulty is something else. If you find a section is too hard, go around it, don't even think of changing it!! We've seen this before at k-mart, but this ain't k-mart! It's not a free-for-all. Because you can't do an obstacle does not mean it needs to be changed. When we started it was months before anyone made it through the gator hole, it is suppose to be a challenge. If you want to help get with a club member and we will show you what to do, Making the trail easier is not one of them.

STOP SKIDDING!!!!! got it? STOP SKIDDING!!!
This is a basic trail rule that is being ignored.
If you see your buddy skidding slap him and tell him to stop. It's not faster to skid and it destroys the trail top coat exposing sand that will wash out next time it rains. If you have to stop and adjust your brakes, DO IT. What really erks me is seeing skids on open flat ground no where near a corner!!! F-N stop IT! Too few people have done too much work on the trail to have it hacked up by inconsiderate dick weeds. If you have to skid go out to the paved road. If you have to leave more room between rides, DO IT. Make your friend fork over $10/skid to the club so someone can go fix it.

Helmets! Helmets! Helmets!
While I'm on the subject; Do you like riding the park? Then you better get a helmet! I’m not going to get into if it’s right or wrong, the park expects everyone on the trail to have a helmet. It is the way they gage if the bike trails are being used safely. If you are on the MtB trail a helmet is REQUIRED. If you are under the age of 16 and on a bike state law REQUIRES that you were an APPROVED helmet EVERYWHERE in the park. At Markham Park if you don't have a helmet you are tossed out of the park! No questions asked!
Get a helmet or don't ride the trails!!

I rode this trail yesterday 11-18-01 for the first time with a friend of mine who has gone before. I am a regular at Markham park (3 days a week) so it was nice to have some variety. Honestly, at first, I didnt think I was going to like this trail. The sugar sand was every where, and the lack of technical riding that I am used to, was a bit boring. Then I hit the root section. OMG.. the palmetto roots were almost impossible to ride in some sections. After the first 1/4 of the loop, I changed my mind. The single track sections absolutely fly... this is something I really enjoyed. There are no climbs here per se, and no decents. The elevation changes gradually, letting you mash the big ring and really keep your speed up. The decents are long, twisty and let you fly (for south florida). The roots are very challenging, and the man made bridges were great. I loved the three foot tall skinny bridge over the water... I must have spent fifteen minutes doing that over and over. All in all, it gives you some good cardio exercise. Kudos to the personnel who take the time to work on this track. I can tell that alot of work has gone into this. Keep up the good work... I will definately come back. I will also recommend this to the people I ride with at Markham park... Ride on.

Rode this trail for the first time last Wednesday. I must say for a place that should not have a mountain bike trail (read: SAND), they have done quite a commendable job.

I was quite suprised at the number of times I crashed out there.. I started to figure out why I was the only one on the trail.. I was out there around 1 in the afternoon, it was extremely hot, and there wasn't a whole lot of shade in most areas. Navigating through the palmettos seemed a bit more difficult than I sized them up to be, they get very dense towards the bottom of the concrete slab section. The jump section was nice towards the end.

The only thing that I thought could be improved is the marking of direction at some of the trail entrances. Some were painted orange, and through time the arrows have been sun-bleached. It is also very easy to get lost here.

In my opinion it's a great trail considering the elements that are being worked with, although I think some of the rain is flushing out the mulch that was mixed in with the sand.

I am the person who originally post the K-Mart trail on this site and after reading the reviews of this trail I feel the need to comment. First, the "Trail Review" section of mtbr.com is meant as a tool. It is designed to inform mountain bike riders of legal trails around the world, provide directions to these trails and comments by those who have ridden the trail. I think that it is an awsome tool and planned on using it to find out what progress has been made at JDSP and to read about how technical or non-technical the trail has become. Instead of reading about these things, I read review after review that did not contain useful information and should have been conducted through e-mails to each other! The format for reviewing a trail should be simple. One reviewer had the best system: hits and misses and a few other useful comments. That is all that is needed. I apologize to all of you reading my review expecting a review of the trail. I'm sorry! To all others, respect this tool and each others' opinions. Happy trails!

Question to those guys who built Camp Murphy:

Did the park ranger put any limits to you on how "extreme" you could make it. Any height limitations on bridges, jumps, etc?

As one of the "creators of dyer and cholee, and part of the initial push to get land to allow a mtb trail in JD, I am amazed at some of the comments in this section. JD has always had its challenges for a mtb trail, sand being the biggest one, but it also had certain feature found no where else in South Florida, like the rolling terrain. the fact that it was a state park not subject to the whims of private owners is also a "feature" that those who have never tryed to create a trail have no appreciation for. As to the idea that the trails destroy the envirnoment and that the hiking trails are some how better, how do you think those were made. In many parts they are not even trails, they are bulldozed paths created so the poor hikers wouldnt have to stub their little toes on roots and such. Give me a break. The bike trails are more "real" than 80% of the hiking trails in the park.
As to the efforts being wasted and why do we do this at a better location, find one. We would all be glad to volunteer to create another "k-mart" type trail. But as usual, it is the people who wouldnt get off their asses who complaint there is no where "suitable" to ride. Sorry if I dont feel sorry for you. All of these trails in Palm Beach, k mart, cholee, dyer and jd were created by a very few who put their efforts and money where their mouth is, instead of whining away like a bunch of old women.
Unfortunately, due to a broken foot and life interferences, I havent been able to ride this trail recently or help out with building, but soon I will be able to and be thankful for the opportunity. Grow up you complainers.

I have been mountain biking for almost 13 years now. Have won four Junior Regionals, 3 National Amateurs, and a 16th place finish in last year World Elites in Helsinki. I say this not to be cocky, but rather to show that I am probablly the hardest hammerer that rides out at JDSP. I can honestly say that this trail is the best I have evr ridden. Much better than Santos, Markam, Moab, and even better than Bloody Ravine in Australia. The sand is slow at times, but when you carry as much speed as I do then sand poses a little trouble. I ride a Yeti 6000t, xtr everything, michelin wild grippers, and two Rock Schock Black front forks. Only a pro rider needs to ride 2 front shocks but you are seeing more bikes outfitted like this, especially out west. It is hard to handle, so if you are not a top level rider (and I have seen none out at JDSP yet), than dont bother. As for the trail, it is the fastest trail I have ever ridden. Amazing drops, huge switch backs, the two by four land bridges are some of the most tecnically challenging obstacles I haver ever ridden. I wiped out five times on them, and if i wipe out, than you know this is out of this world. I usually hammer out 1 full lap in about 10 minutes and then ride down to the concession to load up on chocolate and powerade. After 7 or 8 snickers to replace my carbs and 4 or 5 powerades I lay down on aa bench for about an hour to let my hear rate stabilize. I grab another snickers or hersheys for the ride back to the car. I then usually finish with a few bunny hops over the hills at the front of the trail. Usually choking down some gu or a few bananas on top of the hills. I then ride down the hill and come back to the car. Needless to say this 15 minute technical ride is helacious on the thighs. I eat some bread and more chocoalate or a watermelon to reload and lay down again. Trully an excrruiciating ride. Bring lots of food, lots of sports drinks, be prepared to ake in at least 15,000 higth carb calories for the loop.

So much improvement here. In one year we have gone from one mile of trail to over 5, and almost 3 more miles ready. Our chief nemesis is sand, and we have used a variety of techniques to stop sand intrusion. The trail is in good shape now. It's rolling hills with some areas of tight technical stuff and palmetto roots. It's a good place to train because you can log some miles, and the amount of difficult trail is minimal comparitively speaking.

The new web address is www.clubscrub.org . There you will find all the info you need to regarding the trail. I also have some pictures and info on the trail at http://www.bearklawranch.com/Singletrack%20Trails/JDSP_mountain_bike_area.htm

We completely agree it is about giving a fair review. I just don’t think “THIS PLACE BLOWS, BIG TIME. Sandy, boring and dumb about says it” is a fair review, apparently I’m not the only one. My review says, “This is the best beginner/intermediate trail in S Fl, it just a fun place to ride”. I guess you could argue what is fun. It was more fun in cool January with no bugs. Let’s face it it’s not a 5*, and it’s not a 1*. No one reading these reviews would show up expecting a Hardrock or a Markham Park. I also don’t think the hiker’s review that we are destroying nature was a fair review, but even the hiker gave a 5*. We also agree we should work the place that has the most potential, well in Martin and North PB County this is the only option at this point in time. We also agree on the park’s limitations. We also agree you are slower than horse flies.

This post is in respone to Ians reveiw below.Ian must be one of the guys from club scrub who do trail maint. here.Seems like he is a little defensive to negative comments about this trail. You seem to have to un-validate every negative any one has made. The bottom line is this Ian,no mater how much mulch you mix with the sand it will never be close to a hardpack&fast. The trail is horribly boring, with the exeption of a few palmetto sections,a teeter totter&and a couple of small bridges there are NO obsticals,NO drops,NO climbs.Boring, dumb, flat, sandy, horse flys, these are all things that describe this place. As far as your comment on me not going fast enough, that supposedly accounting for me getting bit.Heres something you can chew on.I am a sport class racer that regularly wins his class. If you are insinuating in any way ,that I am slow,or you might be faster,is laughable.I have done trail work at both, quiet waters&markham.Because I feel those trails have good potetial to becme better trails(especially Markham). In my opinion you guys are waisting your time,do some research and see if there might be another park in the county with land that has more natural potential to build a challenging trail system.I wouldnt think about doing trail maint. at jdsp, because I dont feel it has potential to become a good trail no matter what you do there. So dont be such a prick Ian,let people voice there opinion and say what they want.Reveiws on this site can be very deceiving.I would hate for someone to drive 2-3 hours to get here and be highly disapointed because they read Ians reveiw and thought this would be a good trail,ITS NOT.

Review:

Reading the last two reviewers I could not resist responding. This is the most erraticly reviewed trail on MTBR. I have been going to JDSP for more than 40 years.
Dear Mark,
I’ve already stated my opinion of whiner-riders below. I wish we had a hard ground base to work from, but we don’t! Sorry you’re visit was less than a religious experience. If you had read the reviews you would have shown up expecting sand and horse flies. If you are getting chomped on your booty are not riding fast enough. We are not pissed you didn’t like it, we’re pissed you haven’t built a Markham equivalent trail in the north end of PB County. If you volunteer we can get you in free, you could then take the entry fee and donate it to the IMBA. JDSP is in Martin County. If I lived in Lake Worth I’d drive to Markham too. If Quiet Waters is Durango, then JDSP is the Garden of Eden. The reviews below for the most part are balanced. The trail offers a different outdoor experience (the woods) than the other trails in the area (rock pit, dump etc). When Ft Pierce is flooded ride JDSP, when JDSP is sandy ride Ft Pierce or drive south, duh!

Dear Cash Cat,
We are building the trails in the section the park has given us. We did not choose the area, but we do like it. The pieces of the old trails included where never designated trails, hiking or otherwise (apparently fire breaks and motor cycles cut a lot of them years ago as well as Camp Murphy). No hiking trail was re-designated! The entire park is open to hikers, only the Eagles Nest multi-use trails and the Camp Murphy trails are open to off road bikers. The trail at 5 miles long occupies less than 1/100 of 1% of the park. Please feel to hike your butt off, if it’s still noisy hike some more.
As far as the idea that the bikers are tearing something up or making it less pristine is silly. IT WAS an Army Camp! The place has debris though out. Some how the old house slabs became wet lands in your mind!!?? We had a major fire there last summer, look at all the new fire breaks cut. Look at the mechanical clearing along US1. Look at the controlled burn program. Look at the commercial exploitation of the river with canoes and tours. Look at the development encroaching the park boundary from all directions. Look at the gator viewing area built next to the main road. Look at the Horses running around and crapping everywhere. Look at the adventure racing. Look at civil war reenactments! Look at the earth day mobs trampling around like a heard of elephants. Listen to the train and truck noise. Not to mention Wild hogs tearing stuff up, The STOP camp, The youth camp area, and Crowds in the camp grounds. The Camp Murphy Trails are a very small part of what is going on.
We have gone out of our way not to impact wildlife and the environment. ALL the trash we’ve collected has come from hikers, not bikers. If you want to hike barefoot start collecting cactus and sand spurs we did not put them there. Having a hard pack surface to ride on will insure keeping the riders away from sensitive areas and off the designated hiking trails. I’m still seeing deer, birds, turtles, rabbits, bobcats, fox, gators, and hogs so if you’re not seeing them it must be hikers scaring them. Have you seen the baby sandhill cranes? Don’t think because we’re on bikes we don’t love nature too! All who use and work at the park must come to realize the park is changing from a rural park to an urban park. I don’t like it anymore than anyone else. If the bike trails fail for whatever reason they will quickly return to the over growth (we’re talking palmettos and pepper trees) from which they came.

It is not the 2nd coming of Kmart
Energy sapping sand

Hi, I respectfully disagree with Mark from Lake Worth below. Yesterday, I rode the Camp Murphy system for approximately 2 hours. I also ride Oleta, Markham, and occasionally Quiet Waters.

While Camp Murphy is still a work in progress, it is certainly ride-able and in many respects as more challenging than Rattlesnake Ridge or Armadillo in Markham. There are many thick mossy roots, often at oblique angles that will challenge your bike handling skills. This is a great place to practice your log jumping! In addition, they have one or two steep bridges right after sharp turns (worse than French Connection at Oleta) in the middle of a thick forest.

Extensive application of wood chips and mulch do a good job of keeping the sugar sand in check. It is no worse than Kmart, and not even close to the ultra sandy back part of Quiet Waters. However, the soft trail does sap some speed. You will be as tired after one lap of the 6-mile loop as you would if you did the one lap of Oleta (including Davies trail).

The Kmart bridges included on the trail are used judiciously. They often appear after blind 90-degree turns, challenging your acceleration and handling skills. There were several bridges from Kmart that had yet to be included in the loop. You aren't going to go as high as the huge bridge at Kmart. (This is a state park after all). But you will work as hard and be challenged.

Also, there are some hidden climbs. The surrounding thick, lush forest hides the fact that you are climbing until you find yourself dropping down a few gears and grunting to the top. Your reward is some whisper quiet downhills as your tires crunch a few pinecones and you catch a little air off a moderate whoop-de-doo.

Criticisms? In some parts of the trail, they used the Kmart bridges as mere pathways over sandy areas. Hopefully as time and resources allow, they will mulch that area and use the bridges more creatively. Also the trail is not as well marked as it could be. Consequently I got lost, and spent about 20 minutes unintentionally exploring the future trails area. Sorry!

This future trails area shows lots of potential. Without the mulch or grooming enjoyed by the current area, it was still ride-able. Gentle rolling hills gave you an excellent view of a few lakes (unfortunately, currently rather dry) and some spookiness as you ride through the burnt Blair Witch Project areas. I saw some interesting bird species as well as a possum. I was on the lookout for alligators and such. Can't say what the technical features Club Scrub are planning, but this addition should add considerable length and fun.

For you urban assault guys there were two 2-4ft drops off of concrete pillboxes, and one double jump coming off a downhill all toward the end of the loop, a nice way of capping off a ride. There are also a couple of sections that combine concrete slabs with tiled downhills and rooty turnarounds. Very interesting!

With the death of Kmart and Cholee Park in hiatus, I encourage all Palm Beach County riders to check out the trail loop and to also volunteer. As a volunteer at Oleta Park in Miami, I know how more work can be done even if one extra person shows up.

Despite it being a Sunday, there were no more than 4 cars at any one time and everybody I met (including the rangers at the entrance) were friendly and enthusiastic. Upon leaving the park, I even got questioned about the riding at Jonathan Dickinson at a stoplight! Afterwards, my girlfriend and I enjoyed a leisurely 2 hour canoe ride about 4 miles away from the mountain bike trails in another area of the park. There is an extensive paved bike trail system and free semi private outdoor showers are available to clean up for the drive back home. Fishing is possible and encouraged. If you own an annual pass for Oleta, it works at Jonathan Dickinson as well. Bargain!

The drive from US-1 and 36th Street in downtown Miami took 1 hour 15 minutes and 86 miles. The next time we go, we are going to overnight in one of the many inexpensive hotels in Jupiter of Tequesta and split our time between biking, canoeing and sun bathing on the beach in Jupiter. (Note to pet owners-Dogs are allowed on certain parts of the beach in this area). On the drive on A-1A we saw a few interesting looking bars and restaurants to check out as well.

From reading some of these reviews i can see that you people enjoy riding your bikes through the wilderness. And i can understand why. But i would like to present another side to this "sport" of nature-going. I am a hiker and i have been hiking the trails at J.D. for 18 years, since i was a child. My mother and i come to this preserve so we can connect with what is real and what makes living on this planet so special: BEING ABLE TO GIVE IT UP. Our mind and our ego and our need to dominate that is. Nature is the only place that humans can go and not be judged, ridiculed, manipulated. When i get my feet into that white sand and feel the wind take back my breath, when a twisty orange-banded snake or lumbering tortoise grace me with their passing, when the owls call or the crows caw en black mass overhead, when the slightest movement or sound from the shrub halts me instantly in anticipation and awe of mystery, then i experience truley the bliss of not being an isolated entity of a human, but in fact part of the weave of the world. In my weekly walks, it is in being the respectful guest that i find what is most important. I'm writing this letter because i want to tell the folks who are biking through J.D that now the forest is not the same since "camp murphy" has come into play. Among other things, the energy of fast adventure, tearing along the trail being chicken wired and mulch covered (cypress--an endangered tree), using tortoise mounds as ramps, cutting up fragile root systems, staking up signs and laying down fast adventure energy, tearing in and blazing out, with a head space of "how much can i get out of this". I cannot walk barefoot along these trails anymore. In fact, i don't walk them anymore, i can't. Nature groans, and i can feel it. It feels very destructive to us. With no insult to you or your sport, we are making some heavy efforts to halt the trail progress in J.D and prohibit bike riding along the existing hiking paths. There is plenty of concrete around the park to ride on and a long bike path on the east side of the tracks. May i appeal to you in the mercy of our wild places. We don't have many left, and what we do have we must minimize our impact on. We are the benefactors of this planet. Next time your at J.D take a moment to chill out and try the stillness on. It's quite a sport, in itself.

As we first drove up to the trail head I was very excited to see some large BMX style jumps sitting there at the trail head. These make for a good time just waiting for your buddies to finish suiting up and a nice way to start the day. Then it was off into the trails. Most of the trails are some pretty open sandy single track. It is relatively scenic, it looks pretty cool as you ride through where there was recently a brush fire, the trees and ground are scorched but the greenery is already starting to come through. Hats off to the guys that maintain this trail their hard work was evident over at least 40-50% of the sandy single track had been worked to make it more rideable with a mixture of mulch and dirt. I am sure after a few months of riding and RAIN the conditions will get much better. The highlights of the trail, from least exciting to most, include a number of very technical root sections. It is not like Oleta or Quiet Waters where you are riding over roots for 1/2 a mile or so, just large (as in diameter) sections of Cypress and Palmetto roots that require some good speed or a perfect line. The "Slab" was a pretty cool area with some fast shoots and a jump or 2. I guess due to the relative elevation of this area, the sand was not bad so you could get some good speed going through this area. Then there was a large teeter totter. It was probably 10-12 feet in length and the fulcrum was a good 3.5' off the ground. The only problem was the softsand on the exit and then the large root section right after killing your speed. Then there is something that is called the "Foundation" not sure what was here years ago, but that is what it looks like a cement foundation to some structure, so you go up a log ramp traverse the top and then you can jump off the 18" lip or ride down another log ramp. I think there were two of these in the trail. A side note on this portion of the trail I was behind a large dear that was checking out the trails. I was about 50' feet behind him as he gallopped along the trail until I yelled to my friends "HEY A DEER" it turned looked at me and went off the trail into the woods. Then you go into my favorite section of the trail called the "Double jump" as the name states, it is a small downhill section into two jumps, not really a double jump. The first one is a large jump where you travel a good distance going down the landing but you do not get a lot of height off the top. Riding a hardtail I liked this jump the best as you were in the air for a longer period of time but the landing was smooth as butter. Then as you land another 10 feet and you are into a more traditional mound that launches you higher into the air and lands you on a flat. We did this section over and over a few times. Finally or first depending on what loop you take there is a small trail called "Bunker Hill." The highlight as the name says is a 4-5 foot cement cylinder, that as you approach has 2, 2x6's ramping up it at low angle since you are approaching coming down a hill, then you traverse across the cement for about 4 feet or so, then down a VERY (45 degrees) steep set of stairs. I actually had to wheelie down the last step to avoid going over the bars, (Which I only went over them once). Some really good riders on big travel bikes may just wheelie down the back side or jump the thing all together. I am not recommending that, but I would like to see the video.

All in all, I would say if you live in the Miami, Ft Lauderdale area and you want something other than Markham or Oleta this place is worth the drive, the jumps and stunts will make it worth the drive for some people and the over all trails for the rest. It has something for everyone, the really hard stuff can easily be avoided by just getting off. It is not like Markham where if you mess up a line you are in deep trouble, it is easy to see where the trail is going for the most part. My advice is just wait for some rain. After the first 4 or 5 miles the sand was just starting to get annoying. JD would probably be a lot better once the trails get packed down from some rain and some more riding.

After the first 4 or 5 miles the sand was just starting to get annoying. JD would probably be a lot better once the trails get packed down from some rain and some more riding.

OK, I was brought into this sport by my brother. The first trail I ever road was "Powerlines" in Gainesville using one of my brother's older cannondales. A few months past and We took a family vacation (my pops, mom, and bro)to Nantahala to do some biking. I really started to love it. I bought my bike in early March '01 from my brother's shop (PRIMO IS THE BEST SHOP IN GAINESVILLE!) and then my brother took me to a trail in Ocala. When i got home the trail at JD was the only one in the area. I AM TOTALLY A BEGGINER!!!(i really suck) BUT I LOVE, LOVE THIS TRAIL!!! there are challenges for me different from anywhere else I have ridden. Sure it's hot, sure it's sandy...but next time I go riding with my brother i won't be left in the dirt. This trail is great for any riding level. I try to ride it once a week if I can. Also THANK YOU CLUB SCRUB! So stop complaining about the sand...boohoo sand boohoo....suck it up, it will make you a better rider.

We caught this trail on the way back to Melbourne from Ft. Lauderdale. We rode Markham Park the day before. Markham is awesome!

The J. Dickenson Trail is pine scrub with some rolling terrain to it. The riders building this trail and maintaing it have their work cut out for them. My own local trail in Brevard county is very similar. It would be very unfair to critize what they have done with it after riding Markham Park(like comparing apples and oranges). Scrub pine will always provide a different ride from places like Markham. Keep working on it Scrub Club your doing a great job. But I must say this. If you are looking for a Markham Park, Reddick or a Santos type trail this is not going to be what you want. If you enjoy a more cross country type ride with some technical stuff here and there then stop by and get a workout. Thanks again Scrub Club!

Dear Lame Realist (big man can't even state his name),
First; read review guidelines before posting.
Second; please ride somewhere else, and tell your friends. The parking lot isn't full every sat & sun because this place sucks, it full because people are having with friends and family.
Third to review this trail based one a one hundred years drought and no rain verifies your lameness (I also question how bright a bulb you got going there in the first place without rain).
Four; it people like you that should be cutting and maintaining trail instead of complaining. The dump is a good example: instead of boo-hooing about K-mart and the bridges, 1/2 that effort could have fixed up the dump and made it a great place to ride. We (me) at clubscrub are working with the park systems to make something lasting, this includes fixing the sandy spots.
Five; I rode this place yesterday and after the rain it was completely tight all the way around.
Six; no one ever suggested this was a "destination" place to ride.
Seven; this is the only place that is available to riders of all skill levels (including beginners).
