This is the track I popped my MTB cherry. I bought my first MTB because of this place. I rode there at least 4 out of 7 days. I remember seeing 150 people on Sunday mornings. One could spend 30 minuted in the parking lot talking shop. I rode there so many times and keept time and distance logs on every ride. If some of you remember I had etched my best lap time on the right tree as soon as you roll over the very first sand ramp (near parking).

While I (we) knew this place was going to be eliminated, it was a shock to drive by SR-7 and watch them level that fantastic place with the bull-dozers.

After the elimination of K-mart and Okeeheele trail, I gave up ridding all together. I remember when they closed the "Mud-Flats" off of Okeechobee Blvd (it was off-road heven) and gave up ridding my 250R. Is nothing sacred...why do corporations always win...why did the chicken cross the road...Arggg...

It's been two years since the trail has been removed. Personally this was a great place for my family to ride. To this day we still talk about what has been lost, but with the loss of Kmart, and Chollee, other similar trails with similar issues have arrived.

As it stands about 200 feet of the original trail still exists, the very back section along the canal that runs into the Blair Witch section and last time I was there the very first section of bridge by the orange grove was there. It lives like a memorial with no name and it's purpose known only by those that knew it's true meaning.

As for it's loss, although I never road it, the trail prior to Kmart was even better, and like Kmart it's now gone but not totaly forgotten.

The entire ten years I rode Kmart we all knew the day would come, so most enjoyed what they had while they were able to use it, and hoped that we would find a suitable replacement. There are some good local trails, but I still don't think that Kmart has been replaced.

BEST MEMORY.... after a real hard ride in July, exploring a thin trail before the forest...and finding an orange grove. Picking a ripe one right off the tree, and it was perfect ! Had to ride out with sticky hands, but it was unforgettable.

You know how good a trail is, or was, when it has been gone for two years and people are still writing reviews on it. I learned how to ride here. I learned what it was like to fall face first off the top of wooden bridges. And it was all good.

It was the best ride in all of South Florida. Especially for a guy from the mountains. The one year that I lived in West Palm was made better by this trail. I remember riding from my bud John's house in RPB and just enjoying all of the trails. Like the ones around the water that if you were not careful you would take a swim. I will miss seeing the dudes with the crappy bmx bikes jumping the huge hole. The memory of my pop-in law busting on the sand and bending his front rim will last with me for a lifetime. I am sorry that I never got out on Sundays and rode with the crew. I hope that Butch is still at it. Anyway take a moment of silence the next time you are at K-mart with your favorite beverage next to the blue light special and know that progress in So. FLA SUCKS!

I remember that it was the only great place to ride in West Palm. When I moved down from Chattvegas and the mountains, it was the best. Back in 2000 I knew that it was going to be developed. It is a shame that it happened.

I remember shredding with my buds John and pop-in-law Mark. I still remember how Mark could never get the hang of riding in the sand and how he busted on the roots and bent his front rim for Christmas day in 99. I am no longer there. I moved back to Chattvegas, but I think everyone should raise there favorite beverage from K-mart in front of the blue light special for a moment of silence for the trails that were the best in West Palm!

K-Mart was how I learned what Mtn Biking was! I started there in 1994 having no idea what it was to ride in the woods and came out racing. My brother and our 2 friends went there more than once a week and we all knew every single piece of every trail. As for memories there was
1. the forrest fire we ran into (that created the blar witch section that someone else was talking about) that we ran into one day litterally!! almost melted our tires off.

2. the imfamous "BIKERS" scream you herd from the paintballers

3.and who can forget all the bridges!!!

But the # one memory I will never forget was my first race at the age of 16 that my dad cheered me all the way through!!:(

I will always hate TOYS-R-US
(which stands there today)

i started riding this trail back in 1995. then it was just flat sandy looping trials. it still was great. the best place to ride solo and let your mind wander. then a few years ago they started the stunt building. it was the best set of stunts in all of south florida. like a rollercoaster in the woods. just wonder where they all went to. i heard jonathan dickinson, but rode there last week. definitely not there. this place used to be my favorite place to ride. i even used to enjoy the ride down 441 north, two lanes and all farms. now like the trail, the quiet 441 ride has given way to widening, and construction. we all know where we live and how the devolpments take over, we just had hoped it would not happen to a gift of a trail. goodbye kmart trail hello retail outlet!!! sucks doesn't it!

This was the second place that I had ever ridden other than Cholee and after I found it I never went back. I never thought that I could find anything like the terrrain in those woods anywhere in the state. For that fact, you would be hard pressed to find trail diversity like that anywhere in the country!!! I started riding Mountain bikes for my health. After 3 years of riding K-mart e v e r y week I am immeasureably stronger, fitter, more stamina than ever. All because I like to go down ate up hills!!!
Everyone I have mes have been excelent people and a couple have become friends. I remember someone that I had seen a few times but never spoke to nor did I know his name, came riding up on a nice 2000 or up Cdale. said his buddy had a flat and asked if I would watch his bike, Didnt know me from Jack hole in the wall. I said sure and that was it. Didnt ever cross his mind about loosin it. Thats pretty F-n cool. Seen him only once since after that.
Cant really describe what the trail did for me while I was riding it, but it was fenominal. I have met 60 new people and have put quite a few years back into the way I feel. I remember riding out there and seeing riders flying by me when I couldnt even make 1 lap without stopping. Now I ride with those people and I can hang. (even pass ahemm:-) I also remember doing my 10 foot high 11 foot long superman into a tree and dislocating my left shoulder and chipping its socket. I also remember my first 42 minute lap. Wet , Dry, Cold, Hot, raining or not it made no difference it was a fun trail and a challenge for anyone.
E-mail me for some info on a new trail just like K-Mart but bigger!!!!!!!!!!!! were gonna do it right this time and get the countys agreement on conserving this land for US. We are already rolling withthis project and with your help we can be heard just a little bit louder by the county. I have satelite arial shots of the property that i can link you to as well as a description. right now we need names and signatures on a petition. Email me and place your name in support. even let me now if you intend to cut a littlp peice of trail here or there. that way the county will know just how many people will actually help establish this place. It is between Okechobee and Belvedere on sandsbury way west of jog.
Paul turned out to be a big help and i would like to withdraw any ill feelings felt twards him at this time. Just a bit of an agressive passer I suppose.
Rennee Anthony James John Miguell,Gary, Jared, Bob, Sheryl, Peter, Mike, bill alex stan, Ken, butch mike, john, scott (fast!!!!! Jesus slow down man) dave, endless familliar faces with no names. This place will be sorely missed.

Sad to see this trail go. I got to ride it the weekend just before the bulldozers came in. It poured rain that day, but I didn't care. Every wet-rooted, yard-sale-potential, tight-squeeze, maleluca-lined corner was pure ecstasy. Can't say that I have a particularly memorable moment from K-Mart. It's more of a collective stoke. The best feeling for me was always at the end of a ride. Picture this...you've just conquered/survived the bridgework. Your heartrate is maxed out from sprinting the last 1/4 mile back to the parking lot. The smell of maleluca, dirt, and sweat fills your nostrils. As you break through the clearing of trees into the parking lot, you see a yuppie leaving K-Mart driving her SUV with her 1.2 kids safely tucked in the back. She glances your way long enough to shake her head in disgust at the human form now confronting her. "Why do they let THOSE kind of people ride THOSE bikes around here?" she thinks to herself. In that split second, life is good...

The K-mart trail is gone. Over the years, rumors telling of imminent destruction would pop up: "Hey, I heard the K-mart trail's gonna get bulldozed in a few weeks." If I had a dollar for everytime I heard this phrase.... Yet, the trail remained. Hundreds of riders continued to hit the trails every wknd. As we bought our time there, we never forgot the ephemeral nature of the trail.

Memories of the place for me include driving up there in '94 after first hearing about the place. Braving rush hour traffic and a setting sun just to "see" the trail. Didn't even have time to load the bikes that day. As things darkened, we walked into the woods, totally stoked at what we saw, itching to get back ASAP with bikes. Got lost on that hike as well.

Endoing hard into one of the lakes after flying down a shoreside trail, trying to wheelie over a water section, but not knowing the drop off hidden below!! Flying through the air hands first, shoes unclipping at last minute, then diving into the water. Gave my friend a great view (laugh) from behind.

Following a teenager riding a cheap bike thru the tight, melaleuca maze section, wondering why/ how he was riding so fast. Surely, I couldn't be outridden by this kid on that heavy bike! He was simply hauling ass!... Come to find out, the kid knew some pretty crafty shortcuts, using each to his advantage. LOL.

Lastly, cleaning all of the bridge sections, first try, in my last ride there. Man, what fun!... A big thanks to Rennie and Club Scrub members for saving then moving most of bridges to JDSP!!! Awesome work.

This was one of the best trails in south Florida, second only to markham park. I will miss all the great times at this trail. The countless night rides. Getting lost on night rides because you could not follow the trail as it was completely under water. The first time I cleared the four most technical spots (THE WALL, THE WATERS EDGE, THE KLINGON HEADS, AND THE "V"). Weekday rides when you and nature were the only one on the trail. Early morning backward loops. Fourteen m.p.h. average speed loops. The hapten doing an endo on a steep downhill his first time out there. Mike crashing down the side of the klingon heads at fast speed. Sam being so fatigued that he could not lift his front wheel over a log and getting launched like a rocket. Stuart falling off a bridge with his bike and ending up under water. All the people I brought to the trail for there first time mountain biking, and watching them catch mountain bike fever. Sitting around after riding a couple of laps and drinking some beers with your friends. Most of all, when I took the time not to shred and enjoy nature and the trail itself.

It's sad sad day when you actually witness the death of something that has provided so many great memories it is almost like losing a family member. I was there last sunday 3/11/01 when it finally became a reality for me. The death of K-mart. I am one of those mountain bikers that had a picture of a a bike (polished chrome killer v) on my mirror for two years before the dream of mountain biking became a reality. About a year before I bought my first bike I was lucky enough to have been befriended by one of the guys who put the trails together at kmart.Who kept telling me you got get the bike, you got to ride K-mart. I finally bought a super v in 1997 and the is when the fun began. I kept going out there every sunday religously(we call it the church of dirt)working my gut off and wondering how the hell the hell these local guys were able to ride at break neck speed with roots and ruts and sand pits and not eat shit at every corner. Well time passed and these locals became my friends and riding family. With time and I was able to hang and it was the best feeling in the world to be able to shut gary down in a high speed corner or watch what seemed like a hockey macth at times with people just havin fun on there bikes. Needless to say kmart for me gave me friends, it created opputunies to travel to places like colorado, utah and north carolina with peolpe I now call my friends. Although I have only been riding for a short time in the scope of kmarts life it has given me so much I will never be able to give back. Kmart will always remain alive in my memories. It $@*&ing sucks that this trail is gone but the locals shall overcome and build more memories. Kmart was five fat tires on the scale of five. It will be missed.........

It was fast, rooty, dangerous when wet and a &^%$ing great ride

What fun, total freedom just do what you want. I remember years and years ago just going up there in the morning and riding the very badly marked trail and getting lost and finding more trail, the good thing is no matter where I was I could always find the cannal that would lead me right back to 441. My only MTB racing expierence is at that trial. The 1994 underground race series, of course it was underground we are talking the K mart trail here, it was great I was a 14 year old first time racer a total novice and was late for the beginner class race and decided to race the sport class man it was great I got creamed but still managed to finish the race DEAD LAST but still that was 13th place out of 33racers. When I first moved to Florida some 6 or 7 years ago now, a friend of mine took me there. It was out in the middle of nowhere. I remember one of the only landmarks then, was a KMart Plaza.. where the shoppers where coming from, I did not know. It became a 'secret' riding spot for me... regardless that there were usually 10 other cars with bike racks in the parking lot. It was like.... 'Hey.. surprise, you found the trail... you ARE a real Mt. Biker... you are my friend now...' That kind of thing. And ever since my first rides out there I've heard rumor after rumor about the inevidable closing of KMart (the trail). This is a sad day my friends. Some people complain about Mt. Bikers... say they are numb to environmental issues. We destroy trails, scare hikers, horses, and other animals. I guess they've never been to South Florida where the Developers destroy prime riding spots, as well as all of the memories, laughs, crashes, etc. that you will read about this fine trail. All in the name of Money. One Nation Under God (money), indivisible (well, I can break a 10... I'll give you a 5 and... well, I'll just give you a 5... the rest I'll tax), with Liberty and Justice (14 year old gets LIFE in prison), for All (if you're White Anglo Saxon Male), Amen.
Sorry to be so long winded.. just pissed off.
Favorite moments at KMart
Fell pretty hard- was purple for a few weeks
Night ride with Jim, Jennifer, Joe, Lonnie, Chris... etc.. Jennifer fell pretty hard.. I was right behind her. She fell sideways off a narrow pass... it was like a cartoon. Not funny at the time... we had to help her out of the trail.
Thanks everybody for letting me share this.
I will see you somewhere soon, I'm sure

I began riding this trail as a beginner, and although it wasn't the most technical, or hard trail to ride, it was our trail. Now it is disappearing and all of us in the area are going to miss it, because we really don't have anywhere elso to go reasonably. We will all remember the great times we had there. Early Sunday AM rides, the thursday night rides and any ride that brings someone new to the trail. Most of us enjoyed the bridges that were created out there. No where else in the state coulb you find the network of bridges that were construced there by mostly one man. He carried the material in by hand by himself and built them by himself for the enjoyment of others. No one knew him really well, but his selfless bridge construction should not go unnoticed and unappreciated. He recently lost his life, although no-one know the actual cause, and we will miss Mike and his contributions to the area. Most of the bridges were recently taken to Jonathan Dickinson State Park for further use. I believe one went to Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. I'm going to miss this trail since I "grew up" there, and I'm going miss regular seeing the riders I've come to know by their bikes and their faces. Good-bye to K-Mart it's been a great ride.

This is the where I learned to ride and the same place I took my older brother so he could learn to ride. I remember having permanent knots on my shins from trying to "clean" the various ridges and the satisfaction when I did "clean" a ridge. I also remember going to various trails around S. Florida that were "must rides" and coming back to K-Mart thinking that we had the best trail in the area. I remember riding K-Mart with my neighbors Craig and Sean the day after some hurricane dumped a few feet of rain on it and riding over everything because we were floating. We also had to carry our bikes over our heads on parts because the water was past our waists. I remember the bad condition K-Mart was in after that hurricane and the bad news that it was going to be developed. Then came the bridges. It was like taking a dog that was about to be put to sleep to the dog groomers for an overhaul and what an overhaul K-Mart received. I cannot remember the trail ever being as busy before the bridges were built or being ridden by so many riders from Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. I remember being on my 12th ride ever and hooking up with Frank and his female friend, who raced all over the country. I asked how technical K-Mart was as compared to other trails and Frank's friend said that if I could ride K-Mart clean I could ride anywhere. Well, future riders will never have the chance to test the accuracy of that statement but at least I had the chance. Thanks for all the rides!

Where else can you get a quick ride before or after work. (Other than dixie highway...Stan)
Hikers, Dog Walkers(?), Dirt Jumping BMXers, Motocross maniacs, Crazy Mud Boggin' Rednecks, and of course the Paint Ball commandos. Everybody sharing the same trails, and I have never seen a problem.

Some of my best memories:
1) Crazy bunch of spanish riders riding off a bridge into the water on very pricey bikes...over and over again after their buddy accidentally fell in.

2) I cought a lap with a "big boned cartman-type" teenager and a friend on a walmart fs bike. He ripped the entire a$$ out his jeans on one of the stunts. Good thing he had shorts underneath. Those who relocated the bridges might have seen his jeans still on the tail. I saw them (kids) a couple of more times, good fun.

3) Watching a paint ball commando creeping very carefully into the woods and then getting lit up by no less than 15 "enemy" commandos a few seconds later in a small clearing.

4) Peer pressuring an unnamed friend (Pro-Dynamix) to do a really gnarly drop and then watching as he half-a$$ed it, hung off of a nasty and pointed dead tree, and spills at the bottom, chain completely off the ring, one shoe came off. It sounded like someone threw a rolled up carpet off the drop. Whuuump.

4) This was my first MTB trail. So my favorite memories from here are any time I cleaned a new section or stunt, or I learned a new skill, better line, technique, etc.
