This trail has sadly fallen victim to corporate America. Once a vast south florida forest area, now a new housing community. Endless trails of exciting terrain and true challanges destroyed. A very diverse and free spirited trail ( no markers), reduced to typical over crowded housing. This area will be missed, as it was one of the few areas in this region.

start at the sign and go counter-cockwise, then when you get to the bridge made of corrugated cardboard, get off your tricycle and do 11 pushups and 6 situps into your riding partner's ass. Get on your knees and earn your face full of goo!

Review:

I thought that I did a pretty good job with the pushups after crossing the corrugated cardboard bridge, but the situps really hurt! The face full of yummy-yummy goo was a delicious reward after a hard ride from the Kmart parking lot to the dumpster in the back (where the local po-pos arrested me for indecent exposure for peeing in a Gatorade bottle and then throwing it in some dude's open car window) and I spent 15 hours in a cell with some black mo'fo dressed as a chick and coming down from some wicked crack high! But, nonetheless the Dolphins are gonna kick some ass this year! Oh, yeah, Bonker: you're a big ol' pussy!

T-man since you were there when we (ill name em all off if you like but it is just easier to say {we}) than it is obvious that I do not have a problem and that there was a misunderstanding somewhere along the line. I am active in trail preservation and construction and you commented on a posting of mine with some strong words so I simply responded with the same capitolizations and haste. explaining myself and reluctantly divulging my efforts which I dont like to boast. Im sure you would understand if someone took a shot at you about not doing your part??? And in reality you like me spend countless hours at it. If you dont know who I am I am the one that was supplying the loader and lowboy to transport them. as well as running them. Once again I am not puffing my chest out but I am stern about my efforts and proud of them. the links are there and there are as many as said. My partner has as well has donated his heavy equipment and trucks to JDSP, This Saturday, Sandbuster no hard feelings but I do hope you understand why I posted the response that I did. It was offensive to me to read your origional posting with questions that shouldnt have been asked to me. The trail has been stripped of all the lumber bridges. We have moved them to J.D.S.P. in hobe sound. There are two lumber bridges and three or so stick bridges left behind.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
afformentioned Oleta, Dyer, Quiet Waters, Johnathan Dickenson, Markham, Ft. Peirce,

Review:

Although the bridges werent the main reason the trail was so great they were however a great addition to a great trail. The trail has already started going down and will be dealt its final blow early in march. This is a sad day folks........There are many people trying to preserve what they can, as well as working hard to make new and interesting trails at Johnathan Dickenson State Park. This will likely be the next regular riding point for most. I personaly am lost, I have always ridden this trail and am in limbo. Should I go to Oleta, Quiet waters, J.D. Markham, Ft. Peirce. these are all excelent trails but they are not K-Mart.
I am truly dissapointed in palm beach county (Note the lowercase) they should have stopped this atrocity. They knew of it and so did the local news stations and papers.
Ladies and Jentlemen allow me to introduce to you
Bella Terra just one more in a string of cookie cutter Lennar homes developments. Bella Terra means beautiful land, What they are destroying is beautiful land and what they are building is nothing beautiful, nothing special, just another friggin development that can go anywhere and they gotta put it here.
We should have annual rides through this place after it is built up. Hundreds of us.

Rumor has it that Cholee is permanently closed but we're trying to get an official confirmation from the County. I talked to the contractor doing the clearing and he didn't know anything other than the fact that he was piling a bunch of fill from a lake into a 40' hill in the back where the big field was. Call the comissioners or parks and recreation!! Help keep Cholee open. It's about the only trail left in the area.

Now I'll have to start checking out some other trails. I'll probably try Quiet Waters and Jonathan Dickinson. I don't know if Cholee will open again. We need to get some new singletrack developed somewhere in central Palm Beach County.

Review:

This was a great trail. I just want to pay homage; this is where I learned to ride singletrack. And being that it is 10 miles from my home, I rode here at least once a week for the past 6 months. Great twisty, rooty singletrack. Lots of miles. Some cool dropoffs, great bridges. A great place to get lost, as the trails are not marked. But you could always pick up a trail to keep you going in some direction.

Review:

I've ridden this trail for 2 1/2 years now, starting from never ridden a mtb to an accomplished mediocre rider. We ride every Sunday morning and almost every Thursday night.(a fun ride when dark) This trail has a lot to offer from novice to "I'm not going down that". Special thanks to Mike for making the great bridges for everyone. They have made this trail a lot of fun and a new challenge. This trail is hard to follow but there is always a "local" around that would gladly guide you through. If you want to ride and need a "local", e-mail me and we'll hook you up. The trail may not be an Oleta,Razorback, or Markham, but remember, this trail is on private land, has no funding, or club support. This trail is no longer in "danger", it IS going to close shortly. Ride it while you can. There is not much else to ride in the West Palm area. We need a group effort to try to instill some interest with P.B. County to add a MTB trail somewhere in the county worth riding. Help us keep this place clean.

This trail is for serious riders, my first time on the trail caught me off guard and I had a bad spill. Broke my front rim on a four foot high bridge. Got caught and fell off of this bridge. But, got a new rim and went back the next day. This trail has alot of little tricks, so PLEASE be careful if you are not a good rider. Their are A least six man made bridges with the tallest being eight feet tall. Alot of roots, some sand, but an excellent trail for the experenced rider.

This trail is one that'll make you get out that saddle and hammer. Though, not much climbing, it still makes up for it with the bridges. Some of the bridges aren't in their best shape. Such as "the Roller Coaster".
But the Bridge that I find the best, is definetly, the "Rim Bender".

There are many cuts off that'll leave you lost, but you will amazing find your way to the entrance.

If your up for a great ride, with good navigational skills, go ahead and ride your heart out.

Even though this trail is closer to my home than any other,I almost never ride it.The main reason is because it is near impossible to find your way around unless you have the trail memorized or you hook up with someone local that knows their way around.Trail markings are nonexistent. If you are from out of town dont waste your time unless you have a local guide.K-mart is very flat, the only climbing you do is along some low, narrow, rooty ridges. Some of these ridges can be tricky due to the roots. The soil here is sandy for the most part but it packs up nicly after a good rain. This is the only good place to ride when Markham,Oleta and Quiet waters are flooded. But by far the high point of K-Mart is the BRIDGES.There, are about 10-12 of them, some of which are pretty hairy!! some of these bridges drop straight off on the backside about 3 feet.Others are relativly easy but fun.One bridge has a sloped downside about 20 feet high.Overall it can be an o.k. place to ride after rain if you can find your way around. But personaly I much prefer to rie Markham Oleata or Ft.Peirce.2 Tires due to no trail markings and soft soil.

Well, this trail is history! The owner of the property housing this great trail met in front of the county for permits to begin building. Therefore, for all of you out there that have not ridden this great trail--get on it as soon as you can because it won't be here in January, maybe sooner. What a shame!

I am the person who initially posted this trail. I made that posting after riding for only a couple of months. I am re-reviewing this trail because I have a lot more experience and still thinks its a great ride. First, I recommend hooking up with someone who really knows the trail. I rode the trail for a few months before I finally learned the entire loop. Once I learned the loop, I realized that K-Mart is great. I have ridden Oleta, Markham, Dyer Park, another trail north of K-Mart that I won't mention by name because those guys up there don't want me too, Quiet Waters, etc. I have to admit that I haven't been up to Hard Rock or Santos but hey. Anyway, after riding all of those places I still think K-Mart ranks right up there with the best of them. I think Markham is fun but no one trail is long enough to offer a continued challenge. K-Mart, however, is a little over 9 miles of one loop and countless miles if you go off the loop and just ride. K-Mart's wood section is a lot tighter, longer and more technical than Markham. It also has some ridges that will hurt you even if you are a good rider. Also, K-Mart is almost entirely shaded which makes it one of the most comfortable places to ride even in the middle of the afternoon. The only problem with K-Mart is its life expectancy. There have been rumors for years that K-Mart is going but you can see from the development in the area that its time is near. I heard that a petition has been circulated to make it a state park but who knows. Therefore, for all of you out there that really want a great ride on a trail that might not be around for long, e-mail me and I will ride it with you on any weekend or MWF of almost any week. Again, ride it while you can to experience a trail that is 12 years old but might not make it to 13.

Been riding this one for a few months. If you have the opportunity to go with someone who knows the trail...Do it ! You really gotta pay attention or you miss alot of cool spots . I was fortunate to hook up with someone who showed me the way . The center area is the most fun . It's challenging enuff to keep you working . It's about 15mi. if you follow the right trail to the end . P.S.... Leave the old lady in the large green "pup-tent" alone ! Happy trails ( no pun intended ) .

When we go to Palm Beach we always include K-Mart. It is such a great place. It takes a few times to get used to the trail (it is not well marked). Love riding over those pine needles!! The section along the ridge on the north side is VERY technical. The roots are killers. If you fall here you definitely will pay the price. Many sections are fast and smooth. The trail winds through a grove of paper trees. It is very tight and well test your steering skills. The final climb and drop near the end will tighten your crotch!! Especially if you chose the drop on the left ( a step-drop that makes you feel out of control.

I used to ride this trail almost every night, even in thunderstorms. It's where I started riding off road. I was a road biker for 10 years. Now I have moved on to the best trails in the counrty.

The trail behind KMart is better when you get to know the trail (and don't get lost) and you race your time. If you ride it fast it can be as tecnical and fun as any good trail in the mountians with out the serious downhills, but you don't have to climb either. After perfecting this trail you can ride anything in the country. For south east Florida I rate it 5, overall country about 3.5.

I MADE THE ONE HOUR TRIP TO K-MART FROM MIAMI BASED ON THE REVIEWS THAT I READ HERE, WHAT A MISTAKE! I GUESS IF YOU LIVE WITHIN A FEW MILES OF THIS PLACE YOU CAN CONSIDER IT A GREAT LOCAL TRAIL, BUT DON'T BE CONFUSED! IT'S NOT A PLACE YOU WOULD WANT TO PLAN A DAY'S OUTING OR ROAD TRIP TO. THIS IS NOT AN "EPIC" RIDE! I WAS VERY MISLEAD BY THE REVIEWS!

One note on the directions to the trail - you head SOUTH on 441 when get off from the Turnpike onto Okeechobee (you actually can't go north as 441 ends at Okeechobee).

As I've only been there once (but plan to go again), the recommended route would be to try to do the outer loop and then head to the inner trails.

After hearing so much about the trail, I finally decided to head up to W. Palm to ride it. I must say, that I had a great time there. I was a bit confused as to exactly where the trail went, but, ultimately, does it matter when you're having fun?

This is a great trail that has a wide variety of terrain from hard pack to rooty to very rooty to tight and twisty through a great wooded section. I would compare K-Mart to the woods section at Markham (but MUCH longer than Markham) and the first and last sections at Quiet Waters (roots and ridges, but again much longer, higher, and challanging than Quiet Waters).

All in all, I had a great time riding there and would highly recommend this trail to anyone in the S. FL area.

I'll give a 5 on the S. FL rating scale (it would only be a 4 if had to compare it to Ocala's Hardrock).

Enter the trail on the extreme southwest corner of the lot, almost directly behind the K-Mart garden center. From there, ride the doubletrack north about 100 yards. Look to your right for two day-glo dots spraypainted on the trees. Follow the trail counterclockwise around the lot, looking for the dots along the way. About 5-6 miles. Also more trails/technical hillclimbs in the center of the lot, near the ponds.

Review:

This is a fast, fun, extremely well-designed trail system. Unfortunately, it's also a trail system that has about six months to live.

Located on about 30 acres of land in West Palm Beach, this trail (often refered to as the K-Mart Loop/Trail or Southern Trail) features about eight miles of well-maintained singletrack. While largely non-technical, this loop offers enough twists, turns, terrain changes and suprises to entertain riders of all abilities.

The trail is really divided into two loops:one large loop that borders the outside edge of the lot, and a second series of technical trails, swampy ponds, and rooty hill climbs near the lot's center.

Finding the first loop can be difficult, with only two small dots of spray paint on a pair of trees to mark the start. Once you find the trailhead, though, this crude system of trail marking is consistent and surprisingly effective; I rarely lost the trail.

The outside loop is terrific -- long, fast and fun. It starts through a moderately technical section of small hills and Austrailan pine before turning west into a section of tall, narrow, root-bound hiils.

While the trail is mostly non-technical, the few technical sections are ballbusters. The hills are steep, tall, very narrow and smothered in dense, slippery roots. They can be ridden, but it ain't easy, man. If you're not up to the challenge, a mild trail runs along the base of the hills.

From here, the trail turns south and follows a canal before cutting back into a dense wood. This is where things get interesting. The trail carves seemlessly through several distinct terrains: sandy slash pines and palmettos, dense, huge meleleucas (paper trees) and swampy cypress and cabbage palm bog. It's probably the most diverse trail I've come across in South Florida, and it makes for some bizarre landscapes: at one point, the trail snakes through a very unusual wood of burnt pine, meleleuca, and palms. It's dark, dense, and the strange black and white contrast of the burnt trees make it one of the spookiest trails I've seen. Weird, really weird.

Anyway, the trail itself is flat and fast as hell. It gets very tight and twisty at times, sandy in places, and occasionally catches you off-guard with a huge log obstacle, a mud pit or a small hill, but by-and-large, you can haul ass on this thing. It's a blast and a great training loop for XC racers.

The trails in the center are fun, too. There are several hills that will give anyone a hard time, believe me. They may connect to the other loop somehow, but I've never been able to make it work.

Sadly, the lot into which the trails have been cut was recently sold to a developer. Luckily, some zoning problem has given the trails a six-month reprieve, but the word is by July/August 1999, this place will be a memory, replaced with--surprise!--another strip mall. Enjoy it while you can.

I am a long time road rider that went mountain bike riding for the first time about two months ago at Oleta Park in N.Miami. I borrowed a friends Gary Fisher Joshua without clipless pedals and found Oleta to be very difficult for a beginner. After that ride I was hooked on mountain bike riding and bought a Klein Mantra Race and heard about the K-Mart trail from local riders. I have ridden the trail 4 times in the last week and absolutely love it. It is what I envisioned Florida trail riding to be. The trail is big enough and unpopular enough (no fault of the trails) to allow someone, like myself, the room and diversity to practice his/her skills while providing enough challenges not to get bored. The trail has some great cuts through paper-tree forest that are both curvy and very tight in spots. The trail also has endless trail options. You can easily get into an opening and have 5 or 6 trail options in front of you. There are also some technical climbs up small but rooty hills that have left me with some nice bruises and bumps. You can find any kind of riding you want including mud, rocks, small hills, forest trails, open trails, etc. I am not an experienced enough rider to claim that it is the most technically challenging trail but for an athletic beginner, it is a great ride.
