Review:

I first came here about 3 years ago when the trail was officially labeled as "Garbage in Progress." Now the trails have evolved so much, not by adding new trails but by fixing existing trails. Being a member/volunteer for Club Mud (organization for south FL trail maintenance), I know what it's like to get limited funding and working on a volunteer status.

I credit that they have done a superb job making the trails what they are now. They used their natural resources to their full advantage and it shows. I do, however, have my dislikes. The trail gets really muddy after rains, and in drought the sand gets worse then Quiet Waters. The average terrain is roots, pine needles, and sand/dirt.

Climbing is good at the beginning, but then it thins out onto single track and fire roads. You get some more climbs in the back and flat twisty trail to the end.

I rated it based on the fact that they used the trail to full potiental.

Majority of the trail is not so technical and wide open. A powerful rider will love this trail and those who crave technicality might find it a little under par.

Living about 45 minutes away I am a bit far from this trail and that's why I'm so relucktant to visit it. I only ride here if there is a race and would pass to ride it for fun-because I would have the dread of passing Markham and Oleta on the drive down. Perhaps if it were closer, it'd be a great change in riding.

Review:

Amelia has come a long way in a short time. I have been riding this park for over six months now, and I can honestly say that it has improved plenty. It has great trails for the novice to intermediate rider. Expert riders won't enjoy it as much as Oleta or Markham.

What this park gives you is a great workout and lots of fun. Those that work on the trails have done a superb job. Most of the trails are much smoother due to the mulch that has been placed over some of the rockier trails. There is a new trail that has plenty of tight turns and some roots for the technical riders. The trails are very clean and getting better. The first and middle section of the park have grown into nice speed trails. The last few trails have some nice little drops and climbs. I was surprised that with all the new mulch that was laid over the trails, none went to the muddy trail. That might have helped absorb some of the water. When dry, the muddy trail is one of the best trails.

Overall, this is a wonderful park and alot of credit should be given to those that work on it. Enjoy, I highly recommend it.

Amelia gets better every week. Tons of work going on...
It is not, and never will be an extremely technically challenging ride. If you are in need for a good cardioworkout, without risking your life, this is the place for you.
After all the recent work the trial has a nice flow...it is possible to maintain your HR @ 80% all the way around.
It is not better or worse, it is different than most other rides in SE US.

This is in response to a review that was posted 03/31/03(name with held as a courtesy) regarding the mtb trails at Amelia. Unfortunately Amelia gets pretty muddy even after a light rain mainly because of the land fill that was used in that area of the park. I'm
going to share some facts about the trails for any future riders to Amelia so that consideration will be
taken when submitting your reviews. For the most part the majority of the trails at Amelia were done solely with volunteer help and some donations. Metro-Dade county has been slow in allocating funds and equipment for a serious effort to creat a world class mtb course accommedating all riding levels. I personally know and have met some of the volunteer's who have and who are still trying to improve the quality of the trails using their own personal time and expenses. Hats off to Steve and his crew from In Da House Racing and to all the volunteer's for a great effort, and why do they do it, because they care. To the individual who prompt this response, know the facts and offer constructive criticism before bashing other peoples good intentions. I will admit Amelia is lacking a true technical along with an expert section for the advanced mtb'ers. I'm sure designs are already in the works. Amelia offers great riding for the whole family especially for the little members, they can do the novice section till their hearts are content or mom yells it's lunch time. Sorry if I bored some of you with this but, I feel that when good and constructive input is written it makes other peoples causes that much more easier to argue. It's rumored that night rides are being done at Amelia but, call the park to confirm. Think about the reviews you chose to write in the future regarding parks, components, etc.,and who they might affect. See Ya, remember you and yours' helmets and happy trail'g....

Hey, I ride in Florida. I am appreciative of all of the trails that we have. I understand that Florida is a flat state with large amounts of sand. We are all very lucky that we have the places that we do (Markham, Oleta, QW, Hard Rock, etc.) - but, do not waste your time, the cost of gas, the entrance fee, etc. to ride at Amelia. This place simply put - SUCKS. If you want 2 foot deep water, loose gravel and 8 inch deep sand - this is your place. The trails are garbage, the trail marking is a joke, and the overall facility is sh*t (basically matches the rest of Miami). I am getting upset because I feel that I am wasting my time just typing these words about Amelia. You will have more fun riding in circles around your front yard!

Great park for beginners and intermmediate riders that want a work out (You'll probably need 3 laps for this). There is a small section with several land bridges and a couple of teeters. The car trail (a wooden ramp up and over a junk car) is nothing out of this world, but it will open up the freeriding appetite for beginners. In the back you will find several short climbs followed by nice flowing decents (nothing extreme but you'll get a nice burn). I'd rather not ride this trail after a night of rain but at least it will not get swampy like Oleta and you won't have to contend with the nasty slick roots. All this park needs is more technical trails with some challening drops.

There's only one way, really.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Markham (Broward): Very technical and challenging, with a few honest hills. Can be a blast, but know what you're getting into--not for the novice.

Oleta (Dade): About 12-13 miles at this point, a relatively flat (save the big hill in the back) but very twisty and rooty affair. Anyone can ride it, but it will offer any skill level a challenge.

Review:

Fast, fast and fast. This was my first ride on this trail in four years, and I've got to admit, it's one fun ride. For those days when Oleta's roots and Markham's, well... everything, is more than you want, Amelia is the place. Relatively flat and surprising smooth, Amelia provides a rare SoFla opportunity to put the hammer down for miles.

Amelia is really two different trails: the muddy, stunt-laden first half, and the rolling, speedly second half. The first half, depending on you mood, is either a challenge or a nuisance. The word here is mud, black as coal, thick as tar. While it is somewhat hellish, it's also generally rideable (for now anyway--wait for summer) and carves through one of the most dense paper tree groves I've ever seen, which is pretty cool.

This section is also where most of the ramps and stunts live, and they are very well executed indeed. The most unique is the Car Ramp, which--surprise--is built over what appears to be a burned-out Cavalier. It starts out wide, but rises quickly, narrows quite a bit and requires a dicey right-hander to finish it out--ride with caution. Ditto for the largest ramp in the park, a twisty number through a stand of trees. It's not particularly long or high, but at about 50 feet long, two feet wide and four feet tall in places, it's not a gimme and more than enough to put the big hurt on you if you don't make it. There are also a number of smaller ramps and jumps, including a pair or see-saws.

Again caution, as there are apparently some novice riders unfamilar with the laws of physics. I learned this the hard way as, on my second lap, I zipped up on of the see-saws, waiting to be gently lowered to the earth below. Didn't happen. Instead, I plunged three feet--straight on my head--as the rider behind me decided to ride onto the "see" just as I reached the end of the "saw." So, a broken helmet, four-day migraine and several dozen hematomas later, I can assure you THIS DOES NOT WORK. Now you know.

Once you clear this, though, you arrive at what is, IMHO, the real fun--speed. The trail winds, climbs and dips through a variey of terrains--jungle, open field and pine forest--and over a few surfaces, soil, mud, sand, gravel--but never bogs down. If you hang on and rail your turns, you can ride pretty much flat out for two or three miles. As much as I love the technical stuff, I have to admit that was the most fun I've had in quite a while.

So no, it's not as long as Oleta or as butt-kickingly tough as Markham, but two or three laps should prove long enough and kick sufficient butt for most. Moreover, after railing turn after turn as fast as you can go, you'll probably be grinning like a fat kid at Krispy Kreme. I highly recommend it.

Very fun trail. A lot of variety. Not too technical, pretty easy. You can go fast, not too many roots(like Oleta). Some cool mud trails. If you go here I recommend riding both trails(novice & intermediate). There's 2 lil' ramps.. one is like 2' the other maybe 3'. Would be cool if they add a better ramp, maybe higher. Watch out for idiots on dirt bikes. Not only have I seen these guys on dirtbikes, but they go in the wrong direction on the trail which can lead to an accident. Overall a very cool trail. If you live in Miami, even as north as Broward I would highly recommend it. You can bring your car right up to the trail. Parking is $4 to enter park but I have never been charged since I never see an attendant @ the entrance, so it's free.
Thanks to who ever built & maintains this trail. Keep up the good work.

I learned to ride dirt bike and a.t.v.'s in this park back in the day when it use to be called government field. During the 80's and 90's I rode B.M.X. and the
early forerunners of M.T.B.'s when the park was called
5 lakes. For those of you interested in bit of history, in the early 70's the A.M.A. (American
Motorcycle Association) operated a professional moto-
cross dirt bike track located in the N.E. corner of
the park. Sorry if I borred you with my intro, but I
have seen this park come a long way having lived in
Hialeah most of my life. I had the opportunity to ride
the mtb trails this past weekend and really enjoyed it.
The overall layout of the course and obsticles I feel
were very well planed. I'm not sure what is meant by
technical when refering to a segment of the course, but
I'll tell you that negotiating the bridges and
see-saw's with muddy tires is very technical by all
means. My kid's enjoyed riding the novice trail's
which I felt to be a plus. HAT'S OFF!!! to Steve and
In Da House Racing, along with my buddy Carlos M. and
his group on the combined effort in making these trails
a possibility for the rest of us mtbikers. I noticed
the emphazise that I.D.H.R. along with other riders,
put on wearing helmets,a BIG THUMB'S UP for that. We
had a few endo's and wipeout's wear I know our helmets
saved us from a few stitches. There's plenty of mud, rutts, climbs, drop, obsticles and good people there
to make for an enjoyable day regardless of your
riding level. This is an F.Y.I. for Steve and the group from I.D.H.R.,I was surprised on one of the
trails by a pair of dirt bikers coming the wrong way
on the same trail we where on. We had to veer off
or risk collision because they were oblivious to the
mtb's on the same trail. I think this should be
addressed A.S.A.P. before someone get injured and
ruins all your efforts. I hear that night rides and
trail up grades are in the works good luck for all
those involved with the effort. Bottom line, enjoyable trail riding for all levels and something for the little one in family, definitly a great workout. Most
important: remember hydrate or die...

New bridge added today over the car in car trail. Bring bug repelant. I rode this a year ago and it sucked. I came back when I heard it had been cleaned up and improved. Don't judge this trail based on reviews posted b/4 10/15/02. This trail is now a clean, well maintained 5 mile loop if you learn all the offshoots. It isn't too technical, midway between Quiet Waters and Oleta but it flows much faster!!! There is a good design and the trail swoops and sweeps along. It's simply fast fun. The "Car" trail (no, it's singletrack :)has two good bridges - one elevated about 5 feet that goes through the crotch of a tree, a dual see-saw, several ramps and a large log that can be crossed by beginning the first bridge, or by going up and over a ramp, or by climbing up and over a series of stairs. I'm 6'4" and I have to kiss the bar to get under one low branch (my lid skids under). The "ramp" trail has, waddayaknow, two medium sized ramps. The middle section of the area, reached on the "New" trail, starts up a steep ramp, goes down a steep, narrow hill and leads into a sweet section of very tight roots, berm & woods that feeds into a section of lumpy ridges and out into a racecourse of swoops and climbs and drops and ends through an abandoned sand pit that you can jump into any where along the wall. It will never put Markham out of business and you'll have to work at getting hurt but you can ride faster here than on any of the other So Fla trails and hey, flying is cool. $4 a car to get in but the West gate has a sidewalk entrance and is open to bikes for free. Water and restrooms are far away in the main park. It seemed safe the times I was down there but I wouldn't hang around the 'hood outside the park after dark.

I've been riding this trail for about 2 years. When I first started it was hard to follow the trail since it had been abandoned for some time. Now the trail is being maintained and is on par with Oleta and Markham. Technically, its shorter than Oleta (also less rooty) and not as technical (i.e. dangerous) as Markham. Its a good place for novices to start and a fast fun ride for intermediates. Experts looking for adrenaline rushes will be disapointed (although this may change in the future).

They have done an incredible job at bringing out the parks potential. Dade County Parks officialy opened the trails last week. The Boy Scouts constructed a trail head structure resembling an airplane in honor of Amelia Earhart. And they will be marking the trails using GPS to make maps for riders.
This is a nice chunk of wilderness and IN-DA-HOUSE is providing the TLC it needs.

Review:

I have been riding the trails in Markham and Oleta over the past 10 weeks. I came about this trail from a biker who gave me the scoop. This trail is fun to ride (albeit short) compared to what I've been riding. However, here is my scoop on this trail:

Type of riding: I like to ride the trails with my son David, who is going to be 12 years old. Riding off-road is dangerous to some extent, but with proper guidance and keeping things in check, the danger is reduced significantly. I like trails that are challenging enough for him to get a workout without putting him in those "dangerous" situations. In this respect, Oleta has its moments and Markham much more so.

The trail: Overall the trail is quick, well planned and supportive of beginner and semi-intermediate riders. The trail provides smooth transitions for novice riders throughout and "fun" obstacles along the way.

The trail is marked with "Novice", "Intermediate" and the typical "Helmets must be worn" signs and the route is quite distinguishable and smooth flowing.
There are low clearance areas where tall riders could have problems, and some muddy areas that you will probably get stuck in if you've never attempted it before. The intermediate areas are quite good and the transition between novice and intermediate is smooth. The technical scenarios will not fit the bill of the hardcore intermediate riders, but then again, this is not that type of trail.

This trail is fun, muddy when it rains, and has lots of potential for getting you into tricky situations. It is a fast trail, so for those riders looking to hone their skills in speed, this is an excellent site. The climbs are, for those not too technical, better than Oleta or Markhams’. They're smooth (again, remember this is for beginners and semi-intermediates) and grades go upwards of 50 to 100 feet. The top of the hill in the Northwest sector is fun and there are various off-shoots that will get the blood pumping both going upwards and downwards.

As far as cleanliness is concerned, there were a couple of sections where I found a plastic bottle of Gatorade and candy wrapper, but it was not as bad as what I've read elsewhere here. By the way, I've seen the same in Oleta and Markham.

I met with some cyclists working on the site while I was there, and it seems that they are putting in a lot of effort in making these good riding grounds. They care for the site and they are genuinely trying to make this a site riders would want to ride in.

The bad: I did notice that the park could have its problems during the weekdays, when there are not too many people there. I’ve read about gangs, etc. that could be lurking back there. Unfortunately, the riding grounds are at the back of the park (North side of the lake) and no park attendant is back there. I did not get a feeling that there could be any danger per-se due to the rider types that were there. The people we met were friendly, knowledgeable of riding, and seemed to be “in” with riding performance, bike handling and overall riding skills. Again, this was the weekend when there were lots of people at the park. The park has a main gate for normal visitor traffic, but anyone can enter the park from just about any side of 122nd street. They can enter by walking or cycling in. This may be addressable at some point, but for now just be alert.

Conclusion: My son and I thoroughly enjoyed riding here. We will plan on biking here often, as it’s a good place to enjoy our bikes and its close to home. There are some shortcomings, but I’m sure they are already being addressed. I give it 4 stars because of the safety issues, otherwise, it's really a great place......Enjoy your cycling…

Nice climbs over chupa cabra, ladders, bridges, seesaws, carpet, burms, whoop-de-doos and more galore.
(did I mention mud, sugar sand and roots?) ;)

Kudos to "In Da House Crew" and Volunteers! They've done a great job representing local area mountain bikers in keeping, maintaining, marking/setting up signs and expanding the trails. Excellent job on adding mulch and chainlink fences in sugar sand areas. Nice cleaning up the old "paper trail", think that added another 2 miles to the trail total (now if we can get the rain to go away). Woot, picnic tables and an actual trailhead sign. Can't wait to see whats next!

Memo: Don't forget to show you support and stop by on October 5th for the inauguration of the trails.

Note to Riders: please do your part, take out what you bring in, those supermarket water bottles make a mess when they bounce outta the cages..

We are planning to create new trails and provide better maintenance to the park.Personally Chupacabra Hill is very challenging. Amelia Earhart is a good place to start for begginers. Also it is a good place to practice and improve your skills. It combines techinical elements and speed.Thankyou guys for all the hard work!

Okay people here is the skinny on Emilia Earheart MTB trails.
First, some history. These trails were abandoned quite some time ago. Willie at American Cycle had to work hard to persuade Metro Dade to open them up again (thanks Willie's Mom). In 1999 he got started but lack of volunteers slowed the work down. Willie sustained a back injury which put the brakes on the project for a while. Since then Chris at Broken Spoke Cycle has
taken over and has had a lot of work done out on the trail. All though volunteer turn outs are still low things are moving at a better Pace. The park just recently acknowledge the trail's existence and hired
a couple of guys (Mike & Jeff) to patrol and maintain the trails. All though their trail time is limited, they have built bridges and opened up existing trail and are working on marking the trails as well as
cleaning up some areas. Volunteers are still needed. They usually get together on the last Sunday of the month. To help call Chris @ Broken Spoke Cycle
305-758-3045.

-CONS
- The park has sandy areas (remember this is South Fla.) that are being worked on with carpets and fill ins.
- In the summer small ants can be very obnoxious (to say the least) when you brush up against the vegetation. Widening the trails should limit this problem until the park allows pesticides to be used. Also in the summer the rainy season creates a lot of mud but bridges and fill ins should have it under control before the season approaches.

-PROS
- So far about six miles of fast, winding trails. Many rolling hills. One big hill providing a small gimps of some down hill action. Bridges and obstacles are being built every week. They are trying to create more
technical extensions of existing trails.(including a free ride area, HOPEFULLY)
- Mega potential here.

-The low down.
It is a great place for beginners as well as intermediate riders. They are working
on more tech areas for advanced riders. The trails are fast and winding with plenty of climbs and descents and a few tech areas. Its getting better every day.
See ya out there.

Not a bad trail. Good for a quick ride that gets your blood pumping when you don't have time to all the way out to Oleta or Markham. Some spots have sugar sand, but not nearly as much as Quiet Waters. Some mild climbs which help diversify the ride somewhat (nothing like Markham tho). There is one difficult spot (at least for me) where you need to have the right line and good power to climb a large rock and some large roots with very little room to build momentum. Gets me every time... They recently laid down some carpeting on a newer section which is pretty inventive. Overall, a pretty good ride although not challenging. The free ride part is pretty neat, too. Yes, some spots need better markings, but this place is taking shape with each passing month. Someone said it earlier, lots of potential and not hardly as many roots which gives your body a break if you don't have dual suspension!

Excellent Place to introduce someone to the sport. Has three seperate areas with their own personalities. Jungle trail is very nice with some very fun sections. The old paint ball area with its single track sugar sand trail winds nicely. And the Chupa Cabra hill with its sugar sand hill providing a very nice change from the rooty trails of Oleta.
It is being maintained sporadically and the park seems to want to keep it, even after encroaching on a piece of the return trail.

Does have plenty of potential though.

Review:

There are two trail choices as you approach the trail head from the lake. (a) The very well marked novice trail, flat as a pancake and ends in less than 2 minutes. (B) the not so well marked novice trail which begins with about a 20 foot ascend then you're given a choice to free ride on the right or to continue the trail on the left via a 20-30 foot descend. I chose the left and found it was not too horrible. Someone was nice enough to lay out carpets over the really sandy sections. I have no complaints re: sand. I have no complaints re: garbage. I did spot 2 or 3 fire rings as if someone had camped out there. Why? Maybe they're homeless. The only complaint I have is the mismarking and the lack of markings within this trail. When I rode this trail, I was with my wife and a friend, aside from us there was only one other rider on the trail. This means don't ride this trail alone, if you get hurt it will be a while before someone finds your body. It also means it's a great place to learn or to take a newbe since there's little chance you'll crash into another rider. There's lots of places to pull over and re-think your next move. Overall, this trail beats traveling to over-packed Oleta in N. Miami or Quiet Waters in dearfield just to put your tires in dirt.

The only reason I give this trail a low rating is because it is not marked.

If someone would place the loose wood planks and railroad ties which are laying around on top of the muddy areas, it would help eliminate the formation of these mud pits. Yeah they're fun as $h!t to go through but they'll just get progressivly deeper and deeper til they become un-passable.

This definetly not a markham or oleta, but its not as bad as people say it is. The first trail, though short, could easily be at any good park. It has cool little drops and climbs and the "the soul bowl". The rest of the park is mostly flat and fast with a couple of little climbs and drops. the park needs a serious clean up and the little free ride section could be cool if it were kept up. A little sandy and muddy on certain days but compared to Quiet Waters, this place looks like freakin Ocala.

No doubts about it...it is mostly a begginer/lower intermediate trail...but I believe it is a fun and fast trail with short climbs and fast non-steep downhills. It just needs better trail markings, a clean up, and to add some man made obstacles to get some challenge into the trail system. I did not encounter as much sugar sand as I expected, just some patches here and there...fixable! With some work it can be a nice addition to the limited choices we have in South Fla.
One plus about this trail...limited amount of roots...which can be a blessing in your gluteus. Good ride to flush lactic acid from Markham>

No disrespect meant to the people who work there, but this trail is awful. They make do with what they have, but you can't polish a t*rd. The trail is very short, mostly sugar sand, and overgrown with some kind of flesh-eating vegetation that had my friend RUNNING to his car in agony. It got me too, just not as bad. The bottom line is I just didn't have any fun out there, and will drive the extra half-hour to Oletta or Markham from now on . . .

Who should ride it? - Beginners with lots of tolerance to itching.
Who should not? - People who want to have a challenging and technical ride on their mountain bike.

Some good little climbs and drops, twisty singletrack, mud & sand, and a bunch of roots. Nothing that really sticks out in my mind, other then the 70% of the trail that is overgrown and the amount of anti-itch lotion you need when you get home. I just rode this trail yesterday (3/12/01) and let me tell you, it's not that bad. It starts off with a rocky/sandy climb followed by a short downhill section. Nothing big, but enough to make it a good start. This follwed by a few short climbs mixed with some tight corners that make for a nice tech section. After that, it dumps you out next to the highway where it's flat for a little bit. This section takes you through most of the trail which is pretty easy. Just a few turns and no climbs. Once you reach the old paintball field, that's where it gets fun. They have put in some stairs, a few bridges, and a see saw over a fallen tree. They're building a bunch of stuff in this section every day. It looks like they're trying to make it at least three options for everything (ie: a short bridge, a drop off, or a set of stairs to get over a log). This area has mega potential! After this it gets pretty interesting. There is a hill out back that has half a dozen climb/drop combos. This section is super fun and is quite diffrent from what you'll find in Oleta. Overall, this place has potential. It's really dusty and sandy (read:SOFT!) but a summer of rain shoudl do it some good. Get out and ride it; the more people show up the better it will get.

I never bothered with this place because of the reviews down below and the trail legality issue. But my wife and I took the kids there and there were signs posted outside the park informing everyone that the trails opened (9am-4pm) on Nov. 25. The guys at the gate said it's the best facility in the state (Ho! Ho! Ho!) so I went back sans the wife and kids. If you're a beginner wanting ot learn how to ride single track, this is your place. Flat as hell and nothing that'll throw you for a loop. Start off with the Sawmp Trail and you will meander through and under trees, some roots, and lots of garbage left behind by pigs. (Tampons, used rubbers, yech!) This place does not get crowded so you can take your time and learn how to corner without impeding scores of bikers behind you unlike places like Oleta and Quiet Waters. And it will teach you the basics of cornering, shifting, getting over small obstacles and climbing a couple of short hills. Next to the Swamp Trail entrance is an entrance for the Jungle Trail. It's starts with a 10' to 12' foot climb up some rocky slightly sandy terrain then sends you down the other side. Don't panic brake here. There was a group of three newbies and the lead guy took out his buddies by going into a skid and losing control. The rest of the trail has a couple of short hills and one albeit short technical stretch, but you end up right back in the flat stuff for the bulk of the ride . When you get to the clearing that has arrows pointing left and right, go right. You get two more hills, two 3' high bridges that go up and right back down and more trail length. Nothing too exciting, but you gotta take whatever you can at this place. Speaking of trail length, the guys at the main gate said there were 5 trails at 1.5 to 2 miles each. Wrong. I rode the entire circuit four times in a little more than an hour. The first time was a slow run to get acquainted with everything. Again if you're brand spanking new to the sport, go to Amelia and learn. The Swamp Trail is perfect for that. Or I guess if you've been off the bike for a long time and need to get re-aquainted give it a whirl. I'd call mself an accomplished intermediate rider, nothing fancy. I usually ride the two miles from my house to Oleta River once a week and do their complete intermediate circuit three times on my rigid GT. I have no problems except for horibble saddle sores and chainsuck. Having said that, I was bored at Amelia and sorry I paid $3 to ride on what is essentially a beginner's trail and that I listened to the guys at the main gate. There is potential here, however, and if I wasn't leaving Florida in three months (OH JOY!!!!) I'd join the ranks and help get this place together. Gotta give it a two. Not much a doin' now, but hopefully the volunteers will put the place together.

Review:

There is some debate about whether or not this is a legal trail. The official word from the park is that the trail is NOT open to the public. The trail is open only during official races, and riding the trail at any other time constitutes trespassing.

However, the word I get from some locals is that it's only trespassing if you get caught, and that the odds of that aren't very good. And, judging by the condition of the trail, it's ridden fairly often. Chances are, it's like anything else; some of the park rangers take the rules seriously, some don't -- you roll the dice.

Still, I cannot suggest that anyone ride this trail illegally. However, since races are held here often, and practice time is extremely limited, I'll review the trail to give provide some idea what one might expect.

The most recent race set-up (2/7/99) was a loop that offered a little of everything -- hills, mud, roots, rocks, switchbacks, log obstacles -- and lot of some things, namely sand. The distance was supposed to be about four miles; a couple of guys in my division swore they clocked 6.2 miles on practice laps. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

The trail started out as a huge sandbox. For about a half-mile, racers were "treated" to pure sugar, about two inches deep, that even found its way up and down some decent-sized hills. Given the complete lack of tree cover and the steamy moisture from the recently cut ground cover, this was NOT a favorite section.

Once the trail firmed up, you faced the two largest climbs of the course, each about 20'-25'. They offered a quick, fast downhill, but since hitting the next hill required a 180-degree turn, the speed was all but useless.

From here, a small section of exposed switchbacks led to the next hill, a short but rocky climb. The descent led to the base of another hill. This one was too steep and loose for most to ride up, so a short hike was in order.

The next section gave racers a bit of a break, some easy, gently curving, partially shaded singletrack. However, this soon led to a tricky descent into a muddy, very technical pit. The pit fed into a short mud trail, slow, but nicely shaded.

A short climb led to a faily non-descript section of about a mile, save a few tall log obstacles. Once through this, it was through a large sand pit (thank God for that chainlink fence) and onto the last half of the trail.

This section featured some rooty, sandy technical singletrack with a few tricky rocks. Mostly, though, it was hills, five or six short but steep climbs. Many were covered in either loose coral and/or sand, which made this perhaps the most physically taxing part of the course.

From here, a short straightaway led to a somewhat tricky, muddy, very rootbound section of quick bumps and sharp turns. This, in turn, fed back into the sandbox.

It's a shame that this trail isn't open, because it offers a nice combination of Oleta's challenges and Markham's variety in a location convenient for much of Dade County. Until then, see you on race day.
