  Alafia River State Park

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

Lithia, south east of Brandon

Directions to Trailhead:

Follow road map on SWAMP Club website www.swampclub.org/locations.htm#Alafia. Pay $2 per carload at "iron ranger" in parking lot. Ride south (follow signs) through mowed grass to picnic table area. Follow signs from there.

Trail Description:

SWAMP Club volunteers built these trails, check out the trail map on SWAMP Club's website. There are currently three 3-mile loops, color-coded yellow for beginner, blue for intermediate and red for advanced. Eventually cyclists will be able to drive to a trailhead at the picnic table area. Not included in the 10 miles is a 2-mile mowed loop in the meadows north of the single track which is very difficult because of the soft terrain. This loop may not be for cyclists in the long-run. The beginner loop called the River loop is for experienced beginners. Although only three miles long (with two bailouts at about one-mile intervals), it feels longer because the trail is new and many sections have very technical palmetto roots. The intermediate section is very fun (best ridden counter-clockwise), with lots of medium-sized rolling hills. This loop has a mile-long section towards the end which is very beginner-like with twisty flat terrain. Moonscape, the 3-mile advanced loop which MUST be ridden counter-clockwise, starts out very easy for the first mile, moves into intermediate roller-coaster dips and technical rocky sections for the second mile and finishes with very technical and difficult climbs and drops. The SWAMP club members are adding new trails all the time, and expect to join these trails to Boyette eventually (with technical sections on mining land located in between).

Trail Length:

10 miles

ROLLERCOASTER AND MOONSCAPE ARE INCREDIBLE. VERY TECHNICAL AND DEMANDING AND AFTER ALL THE RAIN AND A SHORT CLOSING,NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART.AS ANOTHER REVIEWER SAID, THIS PLACE CAN BE SCARY WHEN IT IS WET AND UNFORGIVING. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TIRES FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. PAY FOR SOME GOOD TIRES OR PAY THE PRICE ON THE TRAIL. I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THIS PLACE.

very fun and technically demanding trail system. there are several short, rolling hill courses linked together by grassy and sandy trails. some of the trails are for advanced riders only but if you're in the mood to try difficult sections in a non-linear sense then this can be a good training ground. never very crowded, less so on weekdays. beginners should avoid the river trail, even though it is listed as a beginner trail. what it really is is an unforgiving, root-strewn jungle and never really gets you a view of the river.

Moonscape is probably the most advanced trail in FL. It is quite disorienting once you are inside. Also difficult to get back to the parking. One climb was just imposible so I asume I was going the wrong way. The advanced trail system in Alafia is VERY scary in the wet season. The whole place turns into slime plasma. Ride at your own risk!

What a sweet trail setup. I brought my girlfriend along to see if she could handle it, and what da ya know....she didn't fall. Course we were going a blazing 3-4mile an hour.
The beginner trails are definitely a bit more advanced than other parks. Especially when they merge with the intermediates without warning. Overall it's an awesome place. And I think I'll leave the girlfriend at home the next time.

This was my first visit to Alafia, started our ride about 1pm and rode for about 4 hours. The trails are great especially the Rollercoaster and Gatorback trails. Trails are well maintained and difficulty levels well marked. Only two real complaints; first the trails could be marked better. When riding there were plenty of trail markers on obvious trail points but none on areas where the trail path was questionable.

Second, after of four hours of riding we were ready for the parking lot. The markings for the lot were scarce and very difficult to follow if you found one. This is definitely a fun place to ride and I would strongly recommend it to others. Trail is similar to Santos only a bit more technical.

We have been wanting to go on a guided ride with SWAMP for several months, but I always end up having to be somewhere else (like work!). So me and the hubby took our kids out. We had only been to Flatwoods and really liked it, great for beginners like us. So we took the beginner trails at Alafia. whoo! My kids are only seven and ten, but they rocked! They liked it once they got the hang of it. some of the mini hills on the way out to the beginner trails (Roller Coaster)were too steep for them, kid actually lost momentum going up on one,and his elbow met a tree and crashed into my front tire. Nah, up and at em again. The kids got the spirit going when we finally got to the trails. It was a bit challenging for us too. So, next time we are gonna leave the kids at home and go ourselves and a bit faster! Recommend that you bring plenty of water, we ran out in the middle of the ride. We also made the big mistake of starting our ride at 10am on a nice spring Florida day (read:HOT! HOT!) and one of my kids got a bit too hot right at the end. I wish there was some kinda way I could get together during the week with someone of my skill level just so I'd have someone to ride with while the kids are in school.
The signs were small and close to the ground. I was thinking they need permanent signs more clearly marked. An Eagle Scout project, maybe? All in all, a good ride and looking forward to doing it again. Just need to find a buddy.

Went out there yesterday. It was a warm, but cloudy afternoon (thank goodness). Thanks to Steve for showing me around out there. I was very impressed with the trails and the scenery. There are a couple trails that will make you dream of full suspension due to rocks and palmetto stubs. The roller coaster is a great trail.

All around good place to ride. Sure is a hike from Tampa, but driving throught the farmlands is a peaceful start and finish. I'm impressed by the quality of the trails, and I look forward to helping the Swamp club on a trail work day. I think this trail is similar to Carter road, but a bit more dangerous to ride solo because it's a long ways back to the parking area if you get lost or hurt.

I really had a good time riding these trails. A special thanks goes out to Julianne of SWAMP for showing me around...too bad I couldn't keep up with her ;-) The trails blew me away. They definitely kept you guessing. Kudos to SWAMP for some excellent trail-building. If you want really steep stuff, ride Roller Coaster. It was a lot of fun. I really liked the long downhill run on one of the intermediate trails (don't remember the name), but it was really fast. I'm about 6ft 2in tall, and some of the over-hanging branches were kinda low...got some scratches on my helmet (better than my nogin though). Also, watch out for all the palmetto roots. They seem to appear at the most inopportune times. If I ever make it back to this area, I'm bringing my bike again and going riding at Alafia! I was limited on time (and energy) so I didn't get to ride all the trails...maybe next time.

This was our first ride at Alafia and we had a great time. Don't underestimate this trail system. We whipped down the first red trail we came to, being not quite warmed up yet or paying close attention and 30 seconds later we were puckered up and praying we wouldn't fly out into one of those green slime lakes.

We've been riding Santos trails near Ocala almost every weekend and highly recommend them, however, the Yellow / Blue trails there are fairly gentle compared to the Yellow / Blue at Alafia. I would say Alafia is a bit more rugged and varied in terrain, where Santos Y/B trails are more legs and lungs. The diversity of the well-maintainted trails at this park will definately expose your skills that need work and give you a great workout at the same time. Hats off to the SWAMP Club for all their hard work.

Review:

I hooked up with Art North from the SWAMP Club. We spent most of the time riding the more technical sections but there is riding for all skill levels.

Should you bring your bike to Florida? Yes, yes you should. Former mining areas like Alafia offer great mountain biking and feature rolling terrain with steep climbs and descents, twisty single track, bridges and lots of terrain features to keep it interesting. One great section is a steep descent on a narrow ridge only a few feet wide with the ground falling away sharply on both sides. Going off either side would be a bad thing.

They did a nice job of designing the trails in the technical sections with good flow and maximum use of terrain features. Riders from other parts of the country will find it unique to flow through palm trees and tropical flora rather than the typical forests at most mountain bike venues. The area is interlaced with ribbons of green water and a variety of wild life. Art stopped on the first leg of a switch back climb and pointed out a big alligator on the opposite bank.

The red loop requires good bike handling skills and a decent level of fitness. There are no lengthy climbs but plenty of steep ones to keep your heart rate up. You can see a glimpse of what Alafia has to offer at http://homepage.mac.com/weseubank/PhotoAlbum.html If these photos look at all interesting then you will definitely dig it when you get there and see what it has to offer. It will likely take you a while to dial in the course and require a few "do overs" along the way.

Art told me there is more great terrain available for future trails. Amenities were to be added. Improved trail marking should help you could avoid missing the best sections and look stupid by posting a bad review saying there is nothing technical at Alafia. Check out the SWAMP Club site first. The red loop is technical cross country mountain biking, not a trials course. We ran into some novice bikers who had just "ridden" a difficult section. Their thoughts, "We have just been through hell and back."

First time I went there, I thought I was going to be on another typical florida trail, so did my buddy that just moved back from colorado..... left my helmet back at the car.... I got about 300 ft into the trail and realized this isn't ride in the park.... back to the car, got the helmet.... These trails start out with some cool little bumps and quickly turn into an advanced course.... Quite a bit of fun downhills and some climing too.... The first time I rode the trail it was very intimidating, after a few laps you get to know the trail and thats really when the fun begins. Their are trails for every level of rider, may want to leave the kids home for this one.....

I was invited to go Mt biking with my brother and 2 of his friends for the first time about 3 months ago on his loaner non-suspension ridged fork MTB bike and a helmet that was way too big for my head!
My 1st impression was boreing ( that was the mile ride to the trails ). Then they headed in the first set of trails ( that is the RED section ) and i was completely amazed at how fun ( and rough! recommend full-suspension ) and was completely hooked and have been going to Alfia every Saturday so far. I am the short guy on a dark blue & silver Cannondale SuperV that is alittle squirrelly, especially on the NEW RED SECTION ! ( have to keep the speed up going down so going up will become reality ) . Swamp Club has done an awsome job on this trail !(i have only been to one other and this Trail has all the Thrill that anyone can ask for) Becareful and keep your eyes open for riders that ride the trails backwards! I like to ride fast and had smacked into a couple of them myself.

Review:

Pay $2 fee and head out of parking lot. (there's porta-john in upper north side - use it there instead of the trail)
Head out of parking lot to trail that heads south. Follow it to the red. On a good day (semi-dry) most of everything is ridable - on wet days, the trail gets hairy.
The "new" advanced section is opened with a cool bridge big sign warning beginners to stay out. All the hills are ridable but the climbs are a little tough. You find yourself debating between riding fast down to make the climb up or riding slow to avoid rolling off the bridge into the swamp. Either way , its cool.

But beware - these trails have a burmuda triangle effect and its easy to get turned around or end up on a high-grass horse trail. Go with another rider who knows the trails the first few times. I've met many, many lost people there (Including me the first couple of times). Hey, if you get lost - head west and you'll hit the paved road.. ride it back to the parking lot.

Bring water - they have none there

This is by far the best trail in the area. The new advanced section is insane. It starts out like the swamp and I was starting to wonder what was so advanced. I soon found out. I didn't see anything that was unrideable, alot of it with your butt rubbing on your rear tire. There are some hills that are twice as long as any other hill at alafia. If you can ride this section without a dab, you are the man / woman. The SWAMP club has done a great job here.

With the new trailhead opening soon I hope to still be able to start out at the current parking area. The mile ride out to the trails makes a great warm-up for the fun and excitement to come.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Carter Road, further north- Hardrock, Santos. I've ridden the World Cup course in Vail, and ridden the trails of Crested Butte, Tsali, Pisgah, Ellijay and most everything in Florida, but find Alafia's advanced trails best fit my idea of riding- a thrill a minute. I'm considering relocating outside of Florida; if the day comes I will surely miss this place.

Review:

I have no comments to offer on the beginner trails as I haven't ridden them, but the intermediate is general woods riding with an occasional challenge thrown in.
Those not really adept at their bike handling skills should check out the advanced trails (Moonscape)with caution, which can make a better rider out of just about anyone. It's possible to "clean"(old motorsickle trials lingo) the entire section after a lap or two, but climbing up on to and cleaning "Loch Ness" (as I've heard it referred to) is a thrill every time. The new advanced section, of which I've only ridden one lap thus far is equally thrilling, great descents and short but tough climbs.

Totally surprised by this trail. Far better trail compared to the other trails I've been on in the Tampa Area (Wilderness Park, Balm-Boyette).

The trail was built in and around an old mine. The elevations out there are quite similar to Santos (in Ocala)but without the rocky sections.

Very steep drops and climbs around the mine will excite most riders out there. Then there are the miles of flat, rooty singletrack which are just plain fun.

Hats off to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the local bike club(s) for making this trail happen.

See ya next year!

Boyette in South Brandon ,Carter Park in Lakeland and Morris Bridge/Flatwoods just east of Tampa... for the Hardcore... go to Razorback in Ocala, or The TOE in Lakeland (join Ridge Riders first)

Review:

From the (current) parking area, you will have plenty of warm up time doing the grass singletrac trail to your chosen starting area. For most people that will be about a mile and a half to the picnick tables, once there I would suggest if you don't consider yourself good at techinical trails... do any trails but the Moonscape... save that for later.
If you're up for the fun stuff right away and have some skills, then when you get to the dirt road about a 1/2 mile from the parking area, turn left and look for the next trail on the right which will lead you to the easier part of the Moonscape trail. Make sure you take the little side loops for extra fun.(they will bring you back to the main trail)
The Moonscape will be loved by all that like Razorback,TOE and Hardrock trails... it's kinda like those only without the resting areas. The ups and downs are steeper and shorter and more plentiful, there's not much rest available unless you stop.
Once out of the Moonscape, head east to the Blue trails that you will find on the left side of the doubletrack you take after leaving the Moonscape. The Blue trails have a few rolling ups and downs and a lot of tight, Palmetto root infested singletrac...there area a couple of places where you can do short side loops for extra fun and then work your way back to where you left the trail for those loops.
This trail is a work in progress, at this point it is not "easy" for most people, partly because of the techinical sections and partly because the trails are new and not "hardpacked" like the Ocala trails, so you're gonna be pedling all the time.( except for those steep short downhills)
If you happen to see a new looking 40 plus feet bridge just off of one of those Blue trails..DON'T GO THERE!.
That is the start of the newest short A level loop, that trail is not rideable yet... but will be soon.
This trail is rumored to be named "THE REAL LONGEST MILE"... you've been warned.
Soon, the long ride from the parking area will be gone and you will be able to start at a new parking area right by the Moonscape.
The Tampa based SWAMP club has regular workdays here and scheduled rides @ most of the other nearby trails.
http://www.swampclub.org/

Take a lot of water and bug spray as there is no water
(that don't have GATORS in it) and a lot of bugs.

I enjoyed the trail, but found the going a bit difficult for my skill level. I am getting back into mtn biking and am not in the greatest of shape. However, I can see how this would be a great place to ride, if I had the skills and I definitely plan on going back, but I need to work on my endurance and for me, Bellview is better right now (easier) for me as an re-entry level rider. I found that a lot of the uphills, while doable and so forth really taxed my strength and combined with the heat... it wasn't pretty. Being so far away from my car really didn't afford me an easy way to rest and recoup so I pretty much hammered along (albeit at my speed). I would highly recommend this trail to others, but I wouldn't take my newbie friends there just yet, and jeez forget about it if you have no suspension, root city... my 2 cents. I did see where construction is under way to bring the trail head a bit closer to the trails, so that, in my mind will make it more enjoyable. This place is a good challenge for me, and will be excellent at measuring my skill level and confidence...

After living and riding in Colorado for the last 7 years, I have been on trails most people from around here would give their left nut, or breast, to ride. The Alafia trail deserves to be recognized as a real trail for serious riders. Unlike some the other trails around Florida that are poorly marked and actually deadend, Alafia has a good flow to it and it is very challenging. Unlike Colorado, the trail is not even crowded on a perfect day. If you ride bikes and you want a fun ride, check out Alafia. If you think it sucks, sell the bike and dust off your rollerblades! Well, having ridden some killer trails in Co and Utah, I was not expecting much from any trails in Florida. Having just moved here... I don't have much choice, so Alafia was my first Florida ride.
Hey, guess what? There are mountains in Florida, only inverted... and yeah they are short but it seems that the trail builders have done a GREAT JOB of working with what they have. The "Moonscape" has some fun short ups and downs and at least one nice "ridge" that you'll really need to pay attention on... or you'll find out what's at the bottom of the ridge, real fast.
The Intermittent trails are full of small hills and tight singletrack. Beginner trails are tight twisty and full of(Palmetto?)roots, so you hardtail riders are gonna love that section. ( Though a real beginner may find it a lot of work)I suspect that one full loop will take most(B riders)about an hour and half and will be enough for the day, especially after doing that grassy road ride back to the parking area.
Plan on taking a lot water, it's hot and humid here and there is no water available after you leave the parking area.
A and B riders should enjoy the 'Moonscape", but real beginners should be prepared to do some walking/climbing as that area may not be ridable for them.
PS.. there are several heavy duty wooden bridges that may be real interesting when they are wet.
I met a rider who said that the local club is building more trail that will be a lot more difficult then the current trails, when it's ready.

Because of my low expectations... I'll give this trail a BIG FIVE! Just because it was a plesent surprise.

When was the last time you said, “I don’t have a dentist’s checkup for 6 months but since I dislike it so much I’ll see if they can’t fit me in today!”. Maybe that was a bad example for evilnutmidget since she probably considers a pair of rusty pliers a dentist but I’m sure the rest of you understand my point. Unless your just out for fun I would pass on the Morris Bridge trio of trails. They have absolutely no technical difficulty whatsoever. You can practice carying alot of speed here but I would be very vocal around all the corners for you and everyone else's safety. I have been about killed by more than one racer. Just keep your ears open and make your presence known all should be fine.

Review:

It's difficult to make recommendations about this trail since it covers such a wide degree of difficulty. I have run across many riders who consider themselves pretty decent and have had to turn back from the intermediate trails. I prefer the intermediate section. It has some of the nicest hill sections in this area (south of Ocala). I can definately see why the trail designers/makers spent so much time here. They have done an excellent job. There are also some very tight, twisting intermediate routes thru the palm trees, which are difficult to try and carry speed thru. My only complaint is that the parking area is so far from the trail head. The trail you must take is flat, boring and incredible bumpy. Oh well, everything can't be perfect, my impatience to get to the good stuff gets the better of me I guess.

The park was a mixture of trails. The first part was very windy, lots of steep drops and short steep climbs. Sort of like riding an exterme BMX track. Which was cool! Don't get me wrong it was challenging, my shoulders were sore the next day and I do a fair amount or riding in NJ where it's SUPER technical.
Next we were off to some fire roads and hopped into the woods again where it was rolling fast singletrack. Then we went into another singletrack like the first one I encountered. Then we went into a fairly long flat single track through palm bushes. (not quite sure what they were called) next there wer some more very narrow technical singletrack with not much room for error, otherwise you'd be taking a very nasty fall down the side of a ridge. As you can tell ther's a lot of single track here.

Check this place out if you can. The people with the SWAMP club did a great job with this place. We're pretty lucky in the North East where it's all there for us naturally. Just baze new trails and maintain what we ride. Down if Fla. they need to manufacture some of these places to make them more challenging and it looks like they put a lot of time into keeping it maitained. Thanks for everything SWAMPERS!

Great Job SWAMP Club.
This trail put a sweaty & muddy smile on my face from ear to ear. Finally a new trail worth riding.

So far I've riden only the red trails (after rain) but I'll be back ASAP. Helmets are a must. Comparing the trail to others: The ridges of Carter Park, few drops similar to the Toe, Similar trails to Granny's Revenge of RazorBack, Similar rocky trails of HardRock but no long climbs or downhills.

I'd rate the red trail on upper level of difficult (not as hard as the Toe) but I believe everything is do-able on a good day.

Pay the $2 at entrance box and hang the 'paid' tag on your car mirror or the Ranger Lady won't get accurate counts of riders - higher count means the State gives more $$$ to the parks instead of selling the land to potential Walmarts.

Bring water - its hot and a long way back to the parking lot. I see this trail only getting bigger and better in the future.

I give it 4 stars because the ride from the parking lot sucks and Florida still has no real elevation.

This is my favorite park in the area! i love this place!!!! excellent for all levels of riders!!! if you know how to ride, stick to the red loop. this is like one great rollecoaster ride!!!!! can be done in either direction. also find the other red trails, they are pretty short, but well worth the search. the ambiance is nice. i just got back from riding Piscah National Forest in North Carolina, so it's a little bit difficult for me to say too much about the beauty of alafia. those less experienced riders will also enjoy this place. it seems like the perfect place to gain experience. not very technical at all, but stll maintains a very high level of fun! warning: stear clear of the very long (boring) palmetto root section. there is actually a bail out to the left just before you get into this area. i live in South Florida and we don't have anything that compares to this place. WARNING: BRING ALOT OF WATER!!!!! trails are a little bit of a ride away from parking area. I had a great time camping at camp site and riding from my tent to the trails. thank you SWAMP club!!!!!!!

This place rocks. I rode the red trails and had a great time. The mile ride to the trails through open grass area was hot but once in the singletrack most of the trails are tree covered. The advanced trails are rideable with some tricky sections. I almost went over the bars a couple of times. This is the best place in florida I have been so far. The SWAMP club has done an excellent job marking and maintaining trails. This place could only be better with a beer stand by the picnic tables.

Well, this was quite a surprise. My wife and I took a wrong turn and ended up in the advanced section first. This is some serious action, not for the faint of heart (like me). We ended up walking through some of it, but some of the drops we thought we could handle were a total rush. No question, though, both bodies and bikes took a beating. After we survived that, we did the intermediate section, which was a blast. Some nice rolling hills, followed by a trip into the forest that at one point gets so dense you think the sun must be setting. A lot of fun, but still very challenging actually...good for the adventurous but not insane. At that point we were too tired to try the beginner section, but I'll bet that's worthwhile. We'll go back and do that first! All told, a much more diverse and exciting set of trails than we expected.

Well... I came in one way and left another... I found it easier to head north when I left the trail on CR39 and go up to the stop light at 640, I then took a left on to 640... go down a few miles until you see a Kash & Carry on the left, Take that left there... This will take you over to 301..it's a few miles over there but wait until you get to 301... Take a right onto 301 and head north to I-75... This is the directions from the trail not too the trail.. Get there... I could not tell you how I got there...wow!

My friends with the Swamp Club did a pretty damm good job making these trails. I was in the area, Tampa, helping my little brother move into his new house and only had an hour to explore the RED trails, which I loved. But at least I know where the trail is and the best route there. I was able to talk with a couple of Rangers before I went for my ride and talk with some new friends in the parking lot. Some had driven 45 miles to ride these trails... Myself, 130 miles plus one way.. More people will get to know of these trails and love riding them. 2 thumbs up for the SWAMP Club and this trail! I found there to be 3 places that you could park at on CR39... But the one you should is the far north parking area with the Iron Horse... A very big parking area.

Now meet Alafia! If you haven't ridden this park yet, you don't know what your missing. My girlfriend can ride the tamer stuff, while I can jam on the Moonscape sections. There's wet swamp trails, and dry tree-canopied singletrack w/ some sweet whoopdedoos, wooden bridges and challenging drops & climbs. All this park needs is some water fountains and overnight camping, and it will be the shizzzit for FL biking. Not very much sandy spots to be found at all except on the jeep road which ain't a trail anyways. This place just plain rocks. And the length of the advanced trails is such that you can ride 'em again and again in one direction. Thanks to the SWAMP CLUB, you Tampa dudes got a sweet backyard park. I've made the drive from Ocala many times, and that's sayin somethin cause I live a few minutes from Hardrock and not far from Reddick or Santos either. This park is only gonna grow (they got almost 4000 acres of old phosphate mining land to work with!!!) so get there now and RIDE these awesome rollercoasters. Oh yea, it's two bucks per car and that is super cheap for the kick a$$ thrills available here. 5 stars all around for Alafia!

The first part of the trail is flat and mostly riding over big roots. Then you get to a great section of dips and climbs and then some serious mound riding. The nice thing is that 90% of the time, the momentum from the downhill is enough to get you up the other side. Then you move into the last section built around large mounds. This section rocks! If you notice a big drop that the trail didn't take you over, trace it back and see where you missed the turn to get to it.
Some directions I read said it was 2 miles past Lithia-Pinecrest road - it is more like 3 miles. YOu have to ride about 2 miles from the parking lot to get to the trailhead - but it is worth it!
I've been riding Carter Road for years, this place is better and well worth the extra 20-30 minute drive.

I though I had moved to MTBoring-land when I moved to Florida. This place makes riding fun again. Kudos to SWAMP.
The red section is for experienced riders (no beginners, really): slow, very technical. The only fast sections are the downhills (more like controlled falls).
Yellow and blue trails offer fast-paced singletrack. In my opnion, part of the blue trail in the Northeast get a little boring with way too many palmetto roots. The good news is that from a bail-out point (left on the bottles, you'll know) you gain access to a short, fun yellow trail. Kudos again on the bridges, SWAMP, a piece of artwork.
This is by far the best trail I've ridden in Florida, access is cheap, trail work is top of the line.
Bring plenty of water, do not skid.
I'm giving it four stars only 'cause I've ridden five star stuff out of FL, but it is a five star Florida trail.

There really is something for everyone here. The picnic tables form the center of a hub of trails of varying difficulty. (did ya'll discover the "secret" port-o-let SE of the picnic tables yet?) Print out a trail map from the SWAMP club's website, or memorize the one they have posted at the parking lot. The red "Moonscape" trails are a blast, and there are many tamer sections to explore the woods at an easier pace. Water crossings, bridges, rocks, decent drops, good climbs, rooty sections, some tree limbs to duck. . . these trails have more to offer each time I go. Make sure to take PLENTY OF WATER as none is available in the park yet. Wear your helmet, bring a few freinds and ride these trails 'cause they rock. There are enough trails here for you to make a full day out of it, so pack a lunch and enjoy.

I Rode the advanced section first.. After a bit of flat and somewhat twisty single track, you come to an entrance into a wooded section that is very Hilly and twisty.. you can get rolling pretty fast through parts of this section.. there are some very decent drops and climbs, followed immediately with another drop, etc. I found this section extremely fun.. I was laughing my butt off, it was soo fun.. then went into the moonscape section.. WOW, now thats a RED Trail.. I believe that it's one of the most difficult trails I have ridden, Technically and Physically.. this is the first time that I have been riding, and thought I was going to actually get sick from Riding too hard.

After the red section, Moved on to the blue section.. It was fun also, But I think these trails need to be ridden more, so that they become a bit more packed down.

Over all... I believe that this is one of my favorite trails, I will be back again soon..

P.S. HINT - Take plenty of Water, you will need it.

Very fun trail system. Understand this is a work in progress still so get out here and join Swamp to help build this thing to the fullest it can be. Don't sit around and gripe about the lack of trails in Florida when you can do something about it. The only way to legally improve the trails is to get out, learn about trail building, then bounce your suggestions around, then build it. This area has the potential to be the best in the state.
Currently you start in the $2 parking area and follow the signs to the trailheads. Be forwarned this is a new trail that weaves through grass so it is not packed down yet. It is kind of a pain going and a real pain going back but keep riding it and it will wear down. Follow the arrows to the the yellow, red or blue loops. The area known as the river route is the easiest. It weaves in and out of palmettos, oaks and citrus trees. Expect roots, downed trees, and small inclines to be your main challenges. Although not that difficult, it is not hard to imagine the Florida landscape a hundred years ago not being all that different than what you see on this trail. Just when you get too cocky there will be a new 15" blowdown to cross. This is a good beginners route but make sure they are fairly fit before taking them in. The pristine forest could just get annoying if your not in good shape.

On the way to the river route there is an intermediate area on the left. This trail is a good place to just let the bike fly. It is a good place for novices (not beginners) to learn how to use momentum and the gears on their rigs. It is well marked and even has some cool advanced level drops (marked as such) that deviate from the main trail to keep advanced riders interested. One toward the end is an off camber drop that at some point deposit me in the water at the end but it hasn't yet.

After the intermediate, you can follow the signs to the advanced section, known as the moonscape. This area has a variety of technical challenges with quick drops/climbs, roots, rocks, dips, ridges, etc to challenge most any rider. The day you get through the entire section without a dab, congratulate yourself. It is possible. I have done it, well almost but I will.

The one thing that this trail system needs is a long (15+ mile) loop that is at the intermediate level with some advanced stuff thrown in here and there, but still give you some pedaling to gather yourself from time to time maybe even some light northshore stuff. The way it is set up now the most fun is just to ride the moonscape area over and over but after a while it would get old.

I should give the area a 5 but I think it can be more than it is now so I'll give it a 4 and renew my SWAMP membership. Maybe next year it will be a 5.

Review:

I rode the red trail for the first time last week. It's a tough trail for intermediate riders looking to build their skill level. The first part of the trail is deceivingly easy. It gets tough real fast. After going through the palmetto bumps get ready for some climbing. But after the climb you ready for some fast hills. After about a mile or so you come back into a clearing. That'll give you a chance to bail if it's not for you. If not continue down the single track back through the woods. There are some tough climbs again with a monster hill which is long and fast. Watch out for the bike magnets (huge rocks) along the hillside. On my only ride I saw evidence of someone riding off into one of the ponds. There is also a real tight hairpin turn at the top of a small hill. Be careful here or you'll end up going off the track and down the steep side into the stream down below. There's an area called the "Moonscape" which is very technical. Lot's of rocks and very narrow. I measured the track at 3 miles. Lots of fun but very tough. Bring lot's of water.

Be carefully if you take the high road in the expert section. It has a gnarly drop with a couple of big rocks sticking out. The only way I could enkjoy the trail was to do the expert section a few times and then cool down on the intermediate. Beware! There is about a 1.5 mile ride in grass from the parking to the trail head. This will kick yo ass after riding 15-20 miles!
