20th Ave Trails

  20th Ave Trails

Location:

Florida

Nearest Town:

Gainesville

Directions to Trailhead:

Take Archer or University Ave. to 34th St., take 20th St. (between Kash n Karry and the bank) west. At the second traffic light, just before the I-75 overpass, take a left into the dirt "parking area". Facing the trees, try following the dirt road on the left until you spot a suitable singletrack trail. Follow this around and it will loop, running parallel to I-75 and returning to the parking area.

Trail Description:

While the road is rather loose sand, it does have nicely banked turns. The trail is moderately paced, with several VERY rooted areas, sharp turns and 40 deg.+ descents and climbs. Other than the Powerlines trail, this is the best I have seen in Gainesville. Speed up slightly and you might catch air of one of the humps.

Trail Length:

5 miles

Trail Type:

Singletrack & Fire Roads

Skill Level:

Intermediate

It's not really a trail at all. More of an ATV park and a place to 4 wheel. Plenty of deep mud and flexing action if you're into Jeepin'. But as for mountain bikes, this isn't even worth your time.

Review:

I just rode these trails for the first time. They apparently are most popular with ATVs and people who dump trash. Nothing challenging, but you might get lost in the criss-crossing trails. The miscellaneous household junk and trash lining the paths ruined what might have at least been a pretty ride.

Last time I was there was about 2 weeks ago, and it has gotten worse. It used to be that you could get a decent 2 mile loop around the motorbike sand traps, but it seems that the motorbikes have gotten to parts of that loop. In other words, it's pretty nasty riding. A lot of rim-deep sand. Unless you're really strapped for time, you might be better of heading to San Felasco that's about 20 minutes away.

Listen all those who griped about this trail, where did you first learn to bike? My first experiences with 1-track were at 20th so I am going to be all sentimental (or mental). While its not the best trail (even in Gville) its close enough for freshmen living in the dorms to ride to and have fun easily. The trails at 20th are good for beginners, and link up with Creekside, and Haile pretty well for longer rides. I bet I'm not the only one who learned to ride at 20th. Props to Spin Cycle (you guys rule!)

I would like to recommend not riding the power lines because to many people are getting hurt and not using a helmet. Life Flight has come out thier 2 times and each time it was a beginner rider without a helmet. This place has also gotten some bad publicity with the Gainesville Sun news paper and the owner is threatning to close it down. I do like the trails, but this is getting absolutely bad for Gainesville. I see all kinds of first time riders trying to follow the other WISKEY'S off some nasty downhill and with no exsperience. It is fun, but it will close soon.
THANKS TO ALL WHO OBEY THE RULES OF THE TRAIL.

Review:

This used to be a great trail to ride and I can tell you it is not 5 miles of sigle track. The trail is 2.7 miles long and it offers alot of great little technical stuff. IT is nothing to get excited about, only enjoy it because it will be apartments in 2001. I know this because I saw all the site plans and had to do the creek studies thier.

Review:

I'm glad to see this trail is still around; the "skating rink threat" has been hanging over this lot for years.

This trail has a lot of sentimental value --it's the first "real" trail I ever rode, and it sparked the flame that's led me to races and adventures all over the country.

If you're new to the sport, this is an excellent trail on which to learn the ropes. It offers a few miles of singletrack through some beautiful live oak forest, a large clearing with some mud pits and bumps, and a few mild technical features you can try if you're feeling confident.

While this trail doesn't offer much for the intermediate or advanced moutain biker, it's extremely close to the UF campus (about a ten-minute ride), so it's a great way to get in a quick morning workout, or blow off a few hours in the late afternoon before hitting the bars.

If you're in the area and want more of a challenge, I'd suggest the convenient-but-challenging Powerlines northwest of town, or better, the Holy Trinity of Hardrock/Santos/Reddick in Ocala.

LET ME SAY THIS TRAIL IS BORING AND MOSTLY FLAT. IF THIS IS THE ONLY TRAIL I WOULD HAVE HAD TO RIDE I WOULD HAVE QUIT MOUNTAIN BIKING ALL TOGETHER. WOW - U CAN GET SICK AIRS OF SOME EXPOSED ROOTS! HAHAHAHAHA. AND THE LOOP NEVER FELT LIKE 5 MILES, BUT I COULD BE WRONG.

Take 34th Street north from Archer Rd. and turn on 20th Ave. go down passed the fire station (43rd ST.)to the 62nd St. light...on your left is the entrance to the trail-parking. Ride towards the east on the start trail and stay away from the back motorcycle and truck trails.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Not worth the drive. If your close it is worth the exercise. I give it a three for the few interesting dips and climbs.

Review:

This trail is not long enought to justify a trip out to the site. I live within riding distance so I enjoy it. It several interesting dips and climbs. However, it is not as long as some claim unless you like very muddy motorcycle trails. It is usually deserted when I go...then again I only go to this trail during the week ...I save the long difficult trails for the weekend.

If you have to ride in G'ville go to powerlines, otherwise go to Bellview/Santos

Review:

I found the trails to not be worth my time. Go to powerlines. This place is sandy when dry and VERY muddy when wet. And the only way I can see it being 5-6 miles is by riding on the "4x4" roads, not enough single track there for even a "clever" rider to find 5-6 miles.

Listed directions are fine.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There are MANY trails on campus that are great although short. The 8th ave trails used to be good, but have been going downhill. There are trails on both sides of the street. There are more trails with some excellent technical sections on Archer across I75 on the left. I'll get a review posted on them. There is also the Rails to Trails which are more fun than you might think.

Review:

I lived next to this trail for a couple years. It is actually 4x4 trails, and therefore can be fun because of the ruts the trucks dig. Any rain will make this trail pretty muddy, which I think is just fine. You can generate a 5 - 6 mile loop pretty easy. But there are no side trails. Just the loop. There are some short sections in the front that are interesting. Just ignore any sand trails you see, there are frequently vehicles flying around on those.
Don't ride these trails at night!! It is common for some 'group' to steal cars, take them to this trail in the middle where the mud pits are, sink the cars in the mud pit and then shoot at the cars with shotguns. I really recommend this trail for broad daylight, although I was once threatened by a 'group' in 4x4s with guns on a Saturday during the daytime. I am sure they were just 'playing' but I didn't find it funny.

If you are clever you can find side trails that come out in a soccer park east of the trails that loop back into the main entrance as listed above.

By the way, this propert was purchased and is being developed as a roller skating park, last time I was in G'ville.

There are other reviews of this same trail under another name (Powerlines).
