This is a historical trail is home to such mountain bike riders as Gary Fischer, Tom Ritchey,Joe Breezer, Otis Guy and other pioneers of the sport. They would drop this technical fire road and have to "Repack" their burnt out brakes. The trail is steep and rocky with smooth lines(if you ride it correctly) but the punishment for a bad line can be painfull. The often dusty conditions can be bad if you ride with a fast friend.

Review:

Always a workout to climb but worth it Normally you can either work your heart rate on gentle climbs (low resistance) with a high cadence or you can work your muscles on steep climbs with a low cadence but lots of resistance. Repack works both your muscles and your heart rate, and so, it should definately be climbed evry now and then for fitness building. As far as descending it, well, DH is not my strong suit but Repack seems to be just another fire road descent. There are more exciting DH routes in the Bay Area - Annadale Park in Santa Rosa for example.

Review:

repack must have been really different on gary fisher's klunker. otherwise, it's just another wide, fast fire road in marin. those of you who give this place five tires must be inbred simps who have never really ridden anywhere else.

don't make the left turn onto this fire road if you're riding pine mountain--the road climb back to your car just is'nt worth it.

two tires, one on the merit of repack's historical significance.

I hate/love Marin. It's a beautiful place -- anytime you can see the ocean while you're riding is a great time -- but dang, it's crowded and overhyped and thick with rangers. I've done the repack a few times as part of the great Bolinas Ridge constellation of trails. Basically, it's a fast, rutted fire road. Whoop-dee-do. Oh, there are no whoop-de-doos. ... As on any trail on any vehicle, if you go fast enough it's quite interesting, but I must say this is NOT the area's best riding. If you're an experienced rider, do it once to say you did it, but don't go out of your way. If you really want to feel the love, do it on your sister's beach cruiser. If you're a rank beginner, this'll probably thrill you.

Take Bolinas-Fairfax road to this dirt parking lot about 5-6 miles from fairfax. Ride on the trail heading north 2-3 miles, take a right on the trail...

Review:

This trail is okay, but not worth the drive (from berkeley) when I can ride to equal if not better trails right in the east bay. I give this an extra chili due to its history.

No wonder you were dissapointed- you were riding in Marin for Christ's sake. Yes, it is historic but so is a wagon wheel, this doesn't neccesarily mean it's good. Try Santa Barbara or Laguna Beach or Bay Area Trails- then you will only be dissapointed when you get back to Norway.

I was very excited to go to California and explore mountain bikings cradle, but I am very disapoined. The tails we have in Norway is by far superior to anything I found in California (mostly Marin and East Bay).

Review:

I can't belive the other guys gave this trail 5 tyres! It sucks! It is not tecnically challenging at all, and it has a 15 mph speed limit! Also it is so wide you could drive a hummvee on it! Is this what mountainbiking is about? I thought not, but when I come to think about it, maybe it is, because this is where Gary Fischer and Tom Ritchey and more invented mountain biking. I wanted to give this trail only one star, but because of its history, it must get two.

Park in town and grind your way up the hill. Not fun, but it makes the downhill that much better.

Mt. Tam in general.

Review:

I grew up riding Mt. Tam, and have since had career take me away from the Bay Area... So I really cherish my time back in town for a few great rides. Repack is one of these rides. Did it about a month back, and it is still a blast. The climb up to the trailhead is still technical and pissy- nothing fun about a steep uphill grade and loose rocks, but the downhill is great- very, very fast. Pick your lines wisely or suffer.

Be the ball.
