  Pleasanton Ridge

Location:

California - Bay Area

Nearest Town:

Pleasanton, CA

Directions to Trailhead:

From 680, Take the Pleasanton-Sunol Blvd. Exit. Go west and take the next available right onto Castlewood. Follow Castlewood to next left onto to Foothill Road. Follow Foothill approximately 3 miles to the Pleasanton Ridge staging area on the right.

Trail Description:

The trail is primarily fireroad with steep up hill to get to you onto the ridge. Once onto the ridge, it rolling uphill for 3-4 miles with multiple trail branches that diverge and converge again. Ridge portion of the ride ends at a locked gate midway along the ridge but you can descend into the canyon by taking a left before the gate. At the bottom of the canyon, you cross a creek and then loop back down the canyon. The ride back up can be a killer if you are tired. The spring is the best time of year to ride with wildflowers out and weather cool. Fall and winter aren't too bad but summer heat can be killer. Very little singletrack but nice bumpy roads and the ride back down the ridge has some exciting downhill, specially for cheapskates like me with no suspension and after a rain. The ride has multiple options for exploration but as long as you remember the general lay of the land (the ridge runs north south), it is hard to get lost for too long.

Trail Length:

5-10 miles

Fire Roads

I go up several different ways, but my favorite, is to ride from Pleasanton to Sunol on Foothill RD.(makes for a good warm up.) I then ride the Thermalito trail north through Augustine Bernal park to the Sinbad Creek loop.I do the loop, head back South to Augustine Bernal Park and head down the valley veiw trail to Golden Eagle WY. and back home from there. This makes for a 18-20+ mile ride. You can make it longer if you ride the leagal single track that comes off the Bay leaf Trail near Sinbad Creek. This trail is marked "bikes O.K." multi use single track. This will take you into the little used northern end of the park.
STAY OFF ALL OTHER SINGLE TRACK!!!!! I'm sick and tired of seeing groups riding on the wildlife paths and even through the grass, tottaly off the trail sometimes. If this keeps up we won't be able to ride there at all.
I would like to add however, the park districts enforcement is highly prejudiced against the bikers. I've seen loose and vicious dogs and even people poaching with hunting dogs up there, and no one seems to care about that, or the sheep that tottaly denudded parts of the park two years ago.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lake Chabot; you can ride around the bike loop (14 miles) or ride all the way to Richmond on the Skyline National Ridge Trail, or anywhere in between. Just make sure to get maps of the area, at the Lake Chabot marina store.
Mt. Diablo State Park is also a fun place to ride.

Review:

It gets hot in the summer on top of the ridge. Bring at least two water bottles with you. If you ride the single track into the northern end, bring food and water. There is no water available in the northern end of the park, north of the Sinbad Creek single track. Contrary to what some of the reveiwers say this is not an "easy" trail. I rode this trail system, three times a week, for a couple of months, and afterwords, I was in good enough shape, to ride up Mt. Diablo without a rest break (despite my weight of 210lb.s). If you haven't been there before, keep your downhill speeds in check until you get to know the trail. Please slow down and ring your bell, for blind curves.

Please don't venture off the trails...East Bay Regional will close this park if we don't respect the trail rules. I've been riding this park since the day I bought my first mountain bike, this park is a great place to explore - and it's so close to home. If you are looking for single track, THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR YOU. If you are looking for a good workout, a training ride, or just a relaxing get away ride - Pleasanton Ridge is it. East Bay Regional Parks is looking for a reason to close this park - don't give them one. Several park rangers, trail volunteers, and maintenance crews are wathcing on a daily basis (and they don't always drive the green trucks and wear uniforms!!!) They are logging violations and will present their evidence when they ask that the park be closed to mountain bikers. Do what you can to NOT ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN. Spread the word...especially while riding the Ridge.

Start from main staging area and stay on thermalito
riding through bernal park and onto the legal single track.
This is about a 2 hour ride.

Do not ride all over the cow trails and illegal single tracks. This will ruin the long term future for mtn bikiers. For all short term downhill people....stay on the ski lift areas. For those who whine in their ride reviews about being boring or too much climbing here is a suggestion.... don't ride here !!!!!!

Sinbad Creek Trail is the only legal singletrack. Start at Oaktree staging area, ride up Oaktree to Ridgeline. Ride right onto Ridgeline for .2 miles then take the left trail -- Groove Trail. (You'll be on the left side of the olive trees.) Stay to the left at marker #12 to marker #13 and Thermalito Trail. Stay on Thermalito 2 miles (stay left at marker #15) up to the gate at Augustin Bernal Park (marker #20). Continue through gate and then left back up to Ridgeline. Stay on Ridgeline for another 1.5 miles to marker #26 and head down the hill on Bay Leaf Trail. At .8 miles (marker #25) you see a singletrack on your right -- take Sinbad Creek trail 1.4 miles up to marker #28. From here you have a couple choices on several loops, but at some point you need to return to marker #28 and retrace your route back to Oak Tree Staging Area.

Review:

The assertion that "There are a lot of singletrack trails here, if you know where to look" is the type of riding that may get the park completely closed to cyclist. Due to a reported increase in illegal bike riding in Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park the Park District addressed the problem at its November 12th operations committee meeting. It was suggested by one member that if remediation and reseeding efforts don't work by next spring, the park could be closed to
mountain bikes. Go to http://www.btceb.org/plesantonridge.htm for more
information on this problem and what you can do to help. Please spread the word to anyone you know who enjoys riding at Pleasanton Ridge.

Take the fire road up from the staging area. Enter Beral Augustine Park and take the fire road down to the left and loop back to your car.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Livermore

Review:

This park is hot, there are few trees, the fire roads are in bad shape, and park authorities frequently hand out tickets for speed and single track violations. Be careful, if you're caught on a single track (high chance you will), then the tickets are $250-$500 plus community service. Also, attach a bell to your bike. If you're caught w/o a bell, that ticket is $250. Keep your speed down too! I received a ticket last month for exceeding 15mph on the downhill fire road near the parking lot. The Easy Bay Regional Park District hates mountain bikes. I suggest you find another location to more freely ride. Try the South Bay.

Start at the staging area parking lot and climb to the spine of the ridge. Take the thermolito trail west and ride the Sinbad Canyon multi-use trail. Return the same way or take the Ridgeline trail if downhill is your thing.

There is a pretty big group of regulars who ride here. Most of us love it because we can go 3/4 times a week since it is so close to civilization.
The closest nearby comparison I can make is Sunol.

Review:

There are a lot of singletrack trails here, if you know where to look. I haven't noticed a lot of hikers and when you do see them, it is usually in the 1st mile or two of the ascent to the top. It is a great place to train and the trails get better the deeper you go into the park.

I only ride this park because it is close to work and I sometimes need a break from the road bike. I really hate it there. Too many hikers and horses. Your best bet is to go somewhere else. No enjoyment to be found here. The climbs are boring, no single track, and there is a guy with property bordering the park that will shoot you if you are lost and wander on to his property.
I am only giving this 1 star because they don't offer a negative star rating.

lots of moderate climbing and loose rock. fantastic panoramic view on top of the hill. theres one super steep descend with loose rocks so i had to be little carefull. going back to thermalito trail is daytona 500 fireroad with mixed singletrack that makes it fun going back to the parking area. not for beginners cuz theres lots of climbing and loose rocks on the trail.

Just a bunch of fireroads, nothing exciting here. Pleasanton PD is patrolling on dirt bikes and writing tickets for venturing off the trails. If you love flat fire roads with no challenge, this is your place! Not worth the drive if you are living far away.

After having moved here from Arizona all I can say it blah.

This place is a nice workout but takes zero skill to handle the bike around the trails. That 500 yard section of single track is about as challenging as the fire roads.. you just have to stick to a tighter line. Such a shame there are some great hills out there and if the park service would cut some great (and challenging) single track and charge $5 - $10 a head to ride, I bet they could turn a profit.

Start at the main gate, don't forget your lungs. It's a long climb. Longview entrance is preferable to avoid the crowds/dogs/horses at the main gate.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mt. Diablo, Sunol Regional Park, Mission Peak

Review:

Cut my teeth at this park, but now only ride it for old times and kick-ass views of the valley. Ride here if you're a beginner and want to get some strength. Ride here if you are intermediate and above for hill climb conditioning, but don't expect to see ANY technical single track worth mentioning. If you make it to the middle of the park where it meets Augustin Bernal Park, then keep going until you reach Sinbad Creek and loop back. For those of you who are just warming up, take the side trail just above the Sinbad Creek crossing to the vastness that awaits in the rarely explored backside of the Pleasanton Ridge. It's all legal, but watch out for the land owner along Sinbad Creek, he doesn't like people near his property and pulled a gun on me and my buddy to scare us away. Park rangers know about him as he's pulled a gun on them too. Don't know if the inbred still lives there, though. Four tires for sentiment and the unbelievable views.

I usually start from home, which is 3 miles from the regional park on Foothill. I do the initial climb from there to the ridge trail. I follow the ridge trail into Augustin Bernal Park. From there, I continue on to the Sinbad loop. Most of the time, I do the Sinbad look clockwise (the easy way). If I really want a good climbing workout, I do it counter-clockwise.

I like this ride, cuz it has lots of climbing. Single track lovers may not be very fond of Pleasanton Ridge. However, I do love the Sinbad loop cuz there are lots of trees and nice scenery. I'm giving it 4 stars.

There is the main entrance to this park very far down Foothill road, and that one has very little options on what to ride. The best bet, which I ride all the time, is to go through Golden Eagle Estates. (you have to be a Pleasanton resident to get into the park that way) Supposing you are a Pleasanton resident and you start your ride there...You begin with a descent climb which is about 2 miles to the top, you then reach a opening which you can go many ways. Go to the right and follow that until the trail divides at a gate. Take the right trail downhill. Then take the trail that goes all the way to the right that takes you down the backside then back up. Then simply return the way you came.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I would have to say that this is the only one that can be worth anything in Pleasanton, but it is a very fun ride that I enjoy.

Review:

Seeing that there isn't much that close to me, this is a more of an exercise run, but don't get me wrong, there are some steep, quick downhill that you rode up. Just remember that there are some turns that you need to slow down for.

Ride your bike there. Driving to the trail head is for wimps. I know, I only live 5 miles away from this trail, however the last ride I did was at Mt. Diablo - a good 15 miles away. Besides, it's loads of fun to race the roadies with my GT xcr-2000. =;-P

Review:

The only complaint about this trail is the lack of technical singletrack. This is offset by the great workout and incredible views from the trail. The speeds that you can attain coming down from the ridge are unreal - don't slide off the edge!

Mountain bikers who think that every trail has to have loads of crazy stunts on it are missing the essence of mountain biking. Don't get me wrong stunts are plenty of fun, but if that is all you are after, get a bmx bike and go to a bmx park.

Get a map, out and back fireroad to singletrack

This trail has an unfavorable work to pleasure ratio. The fireroad is an ugly climb. The singletrack section is ok through forested bits and not terribly long. In early spring the green grasses make for surreal views. This ride makes sense only if you live nearby and can't be bothered heading out to Juaquin Miller or other East bay trails.

Sinbad Creek Trail, at the back of the park.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
If you ride the full length of the park, including the Sinbad Creek Tr., it's a long, hard ride.

Review:

This is a single track trail about 1.5 mi. long. It's a nice trail that's got some tight switchbacks in it. It's unusual for there to be any legal single track in the East Bay Regional Park District, so you got to at least try this one. However, you've gotta be in shape to get to it (which I doubt those other two dudes were, or else they wouldn't have panned the place).
