I'd recommend the Ohlone Trail if you're newb or if you want a less gravel/rocky trail with some shade. The Stanford Ave. one is just too bumpy, too steep, no cover, and most hikers go that way- great for more conditioned people.

First time riding up a mountain. Seems pretty tough going with a $150 dollar bike (no shocks). That or I'm too weak. The Ohlone Trail starts with some rocks and dirt and progresses into a small forest area. After that it goes up a gravel road and then tapers off to the final ascent which is super rocky (I don't know how anyone can bike up there, I had to walk up to the summit). Going down is rather fast, but you have to slow down for hikers coming up.

Review:

It has been 4 years since I first posted my review. This trail has seen some changes since then. The cow trails that were once fun and challenging shortcuts have been overused to the extent that EBRPD bulldozed them over to restore the original landscape.(Too bad) I will admit it was an eyesore to see several trails cutting up the hillside.

The Stanford Ave trailhead still delivers the goods as far as getting your heart rate up. I like to use it as a measuring tool, it will tell you what kind of shape you are in.

Since moving to Pleasanton, I do not come out here that often anymore. I ride this trail and become nostalgic. Some of my earliest MTB experiences were on this trail. My first "real" mountain bike took me to the top of Mission Peak. A early 90's Haro with elevated chainstays, Mag 21 fork and U-brakes.

Still a worthy trail for workout and nostalgia purposes.

Mission Peak was once a gem of a trail. The boring fire road climb up was all worth it when it came time for the DH. Taking the single track all the way down to the parking lot was FAST and exhilarating.

Now, the MAN, has closed off all access to single track and just recently, laid down a healthy coat of gravel on the fire road.......thus making the climb almost impossible.

We rode up from Stanford Ave and the trail has been graded into a road up to the saddle to the north of Mission Peak (about 2.5 miles). They have added gravel all way up and much of it is loose. Beautiful views on a clear day.

Everyone above pretty much has it right on, it's a great place to ride yourself into shape, I always struggle on the first clime no matter where I go, and the first one here is killer, I usually have to stop 2-3 times, and then I'm set for the rest of the ride.

What everyone failed to mention is all of the stairs and dropoffs and other little things that you can do on Ohlone's campus after or before the ride, it's the best part of riding at the peak. Also, try exploring the trails that go left from the trailhead (by the water tower) instead of the right, there is also a trail that cuts over just under the singletrack portion of the main trail.

I think you can figure from previous reviews, just get to Ohlone College, park anywhere and start the climb.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Instead of Going back to Ohlone, cross the pic, and proceed further south, towards Milpitas. In about 10- 15 miles, you will rich Milpitas. Though there only fireroads.

If you are looking for the best ride, look in Aptos, Forest of Nicent Marks, Braile Trail.

Review:

Good short uphill. The first part, right from Ohlone till the first gate is a killer, i call it "The Stove", since the temperature during the day rises pretty high, and it is not fun climbing all sweaty with all those little bugs flying around you. When you rich a single track, that gives you a little break.
The last part is the best, going up, and then down the rocky mountain. I think that is the rewarding part, and the best from the whole trail.

This is one of the most challenging (and rewarding) rides in the area. Sure its mostly fireroads with a hellish climb and almost no shade, but once you reach the top, the views are incredible - and what a rush coming down! Remember to yield to hikers, and have fun. This is a great place to gauge your fitness level - if you can make it up non-stop you have what it takes to ride any trail in the Bay Area! If you're a downhiller - do us ALL a favor and stick to the ski parks where you belong (why anyone would pay to get a ride to the top of a hill is beyond me!)

Ive only been here once but it was a bad experience because im a downhill rider so if your a downhill guy you have to drive up this windey one lane road for about 4 miles then you have to hop this fence and take this trail up hill for about a mile 1/2, so now your about 3/4 the way up mission peak so you have to hop another fence and now your at the downhill spot. I could not get any speed because there were so many people on this trail. I was so close to hitting some people beacuse they dont know how to move out of the way.

This trail is kinda like my training grounds. If you're press for time and want to get a ride in, this is the place to go. Mission Peaks is not the longest trail, but the climbs is pretty brutal at times. It gets pretty rocky on the inclines toward the end of the ride. This place has limited shades so make sure you go on a cool day or you can go early. There are plenty of MOOOOOOOOO!!!..cows on this trail. Becareful, they might come charging at you...just kidding.

Overall, Mission Peaks is a decent trail. Once you get up top, you'll be rewarded with a nice view of the valley. For more information on bay area trails go to this site: http://www.gapriderz.com

Start the trail that starts at Ohlone College to the top of the mountain, called "white rock" by locals. For the ride down, take the trail that goes down the front side, I believe it's called the "hidden valley" trail.

Review:

This trail is basically an up and down type ride; ride up the mountain and then ride down. I recommend starting this trail early in the morning or later in the afternoon, because the sun beats down on the the white rock and there is hardly ever a breeze there to cool you off. After the short single track through the wooded area you start with the steep incline again. Come down the front side of the mountain and make sure to soak up the views; they are spectacular.

Overall this trail is rather simple and I mostly use just to condition.

I like this trail as it is a good training ground for other bigger hikes with the quick increase in altitude. Everytime I do this hike, I find the first 15-20 minutes draining out my energy. The advantage of this trail is that it provides the option for people to choose either the regular path or the steep shortcuts.

This is the ride you love to hate. I've been doing it for 9 years now and it's still hard. I'll reiterate what others have said,
"If you can ride Mission Peak-nonstop, in an hour or less, you can ride any grade in the area." Sure it's a tough climb but the reward is awesome. The views from the peak; to the North, South, East and West are all spectacular and worth the effort to get to to the top - then you get the downhill! - BONUS!!! Try Mission Peak at dawn - so you're at the peak at sunrise!

Review:

I've been riding for ten years and thought I had experienced the hardest climbs around. I was very mistaken when I showed up at Mission Peak. I took the Ohlone Wilderness Trail to the summit and it was by far the steepest trail and most grueling climb I have ever done. Most all of the Ohlone trail is ridable, but you have to do the "cosmic crunch" to keep your bike on the ground. Hint: once you start pedaling on a steep section, don't stop. I saw one rider stop and barely unclip from his bike, only to have his bike barrel hundres of feet down the hill before it came to a stop.
The ride is undoubtably one of the most rewarding I have ever done. The views from the summit are unbelievable, with a panoramic view of the entire Diablo and Tri-Valley areas. It was so clear on the day that I went that I could see from the Golden Gate to Stockton.

I've riding up the Peak since 1984, and it's always a good workout. Heck, for all of you who wrote it's too easy, click up a couple of gears ya animals.

There was a time when climbing up the Stanford side was a lonely climb. Since they've torn down the winery and built $800,000 homes there, this side is packed with hikers. Also, after the cattle guard and ranger rick's house they've smoothed down the short and steep section before the gate...bummer! Oh, by the way, MC Hammers former houses (he owned a court) can be seen from this side. When Neon Dion Sanders played for the Niners he stayed at one of the houses.

Ohlone side is a steady long climb up the peak. You sort of got to space out and day dream cause there isn't any views or scenery to look at. Oh, the large house you see on the right at the beginning of the climb belongs to the husband and wife doctor team- Karapaneni. I know this cause the wife was my daughter's doctor. Yeah, so what!

At the top, you have the option of descending either side, or you can extend your ride and ride out to Monument Peak in Milpitas. If you descend Monument Peak, you have a longer and harder climb up this route, or a 30 minute road ride back to where you started.

Start the climb from behind the swimming pool at Ohlone college. Ride up the concrete drainage to the gate, make a right up the fireroad and you will be climbing just above the former residence of MC Hammer. As you climb past this monstrous home overlooking the bay contemplate and how someone can sell millions of albums, make tens of millions of dollars and blow it all, while we try to save up enough to afford those Next LP Race Face cranks.....back to the route....continue past the next gate along the fireroad for about a 1/3 of a mile then veer to the singletrack on the right. Continue along the singletrack until you hit the pebbly fireroad. Make a right and get down low and grind it until you reach an outhouse. Make a left at the outhouse and continue along the fireroad. There is a single track option after 1/2 mile to the right of the fireroad, take it... Singletrack is always better! The single track will end back on the fireroad, continue on until you reach the top and you will see SPECTACULAR views of the bay. When you reach the top of the fireroad there is a single track to your left that will take you to the actual peak....turn around a blaze down that fireroad...

WARNING: The trail is BORING....until you get to the top where the view of the bay is awesome. The workout is great. But, by far, the best part about this ride is that is is the only challenging off- road ride that is legal to ride at night in the entire bay area. Yes, this park is open to all from 5:00AM to 10:00PM. The view of the bay on a moonlit night from the peak is breathless. Greg, Richard and Scott know, poor Allen as yet to make it all the way. It's a 5 star night ride but overall it only deserves a 3.

Parked at the Standord Ave. staging area. After I entered the gate I stayed to the left on Hidden Valley Trail (all fire road) until I hit the second gate approx. 2.6 miles up. Since my goal was the Mission Peak I stayed to the right and pointed myself at the para sailers and hang gliders that were launching from Mission Peak.

Since I'm new to the area I did some researching on this site and found that the other reviewers had the same results as I. THIS HILL IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS (unless you enjoy pushing your expensive bike). Since I love the tourture of climbing (I use to be a mountain goat in my past life) this trail was a good resistance ride. IT'S ALL HILL BABY! I stayed on the fire road since I didn't see any single track to climb.
The hiking trail was too steep.
The last 3/4 mile is what seperates the wimps from the animals. It's a cool view from the top especially when the hang gliders are out.
The downhill rocks! That's when I took the steep hiking trails. Please note that if you descend down the hiking trails yield to the hikers!! Speed is thrilling and the hill is steep...good stuff
Conclusion: Short, steep, good view, round trip in 45 minutes if you stop at the top to enjoy the view. Good for a local training ride.

I take the left fork from the Stanford side and go up to the first gate or so. I haven't ridden to the top yet because I come before work and there isn't time so I can't say anything about the last part of the trail.

What I have ridden is basically a wide (and boring) fireroad. This isn't a fun trail, I just use it for an aerobic workout. The parts I've been on don't need much uphill technical skills, only good aerobic capacity. The downhill is pretty fun, but I take the steep sections accessed on the small trail at the cow gate (grates in the ground).

I give it 3 chiles (average) because of the low fun factor but killer workout.

Stanford road straight up is the only way to go. Take the first left and go up the steep trail to the first gate rather than the somewhat easier Jeep route. You can take a route off to the right which is perhaps illegal but just as hard. Overgrown and very bumpy. Meets up with the regular trail about half way up.

The last 1/4 mile to the summit is technical (and again probably illegal). I have seen many good riders come to grief on this steep rocky section.

This is my all time fave Bay area downhill. All the pain on the way up is really worth it. It can be very muddy (totally unrideable) in the winter and very bumpy where the cattle have been until they do the annual trail regrade at which point it becomes a total blast.

Wow, If you really want to push your self, try Mission Peak. Torture, torture, torture. Its about 3 miles up to the top if you start at Stanford Staging area. Mission Peak is a tough uphill batttle to the top. I recommend all levels of rider. For bigginers, ,ake sure you a 22 tooth granny and use 30 to 32 cog. For intermediate, use your middle chain ring if you can. Don't be overconfident if you consider yourself an intermediate rider. Yeah, sure you'll make it 3/4 way up. but soon as you reach the first gate, its a kiler. So take your time and pace yourself slowly. If you are an expert rider, go up oncer then go back down to ohlone college then go back up going back to stanford. Be carefull when going downhill, its fast and gravelly. Watch out for Mad Cows, well they seem mad when you pass them. They look at you like they are going to attack you. And lastly, watch out for snakes, one or two pops out once in a while. Make sure you go when its not sunny and hot, you'll dehydrate and voltures might w\eat you after.

OK, my good friend Brian (see his review below) has been telling me about this incredible trail up Mission Peak, so after a year I decided to give it a go. We took the Stanford trail up, the trail is an average width fire service road. For the first mile or so I thought I was going to die, very steep uphill climb...actually I thought Brian was trying to kill me (he did this to me last summer at Pleasanton Ridge). Anyway, so we get about half way up, and something great happened...I started having fun! Sure my legs were tiring and I was hyper-ventilating but man it was fun! I consider myself to be in a little better than average shape, but after today I think I need to train on Mission Peak more often. It was a gruelling ride to the top, but rewarding, with a spectacular view of the Bay Area. Now for the fun part, the ride down. We rode the single-tracks most of the way down. I've never been very good at steep single-tracking, but I got lots of it today...it was a big confidence booster, I cant wait to do it again. OK enough rambling. I would recommend this trail to anyone who really wants to put thier body, mind and bike to the test. Thanks to Brian for showing me an incredible ride so close to home!

You can start from Ohlone College for an easier climb or Stanford Ave, for a more challenging climb. The back side of the Ohlone Trail has some trees and singletrack otherwise mostly grassy hills. For a brutal ride start at Stanford Ave, follow the trail to the outhouse, ride down to Ohlone, turn around and climb back up, and end up back at Stanford Ave. The ride down is very fast. It's best to go on weekdays, or very early on weekends. Please be carefull of hikers and equestrians. I don't need radar touting park rangers, like so many other trails in the area.

Start at Stanford Avenue, ride on road to Ohlone College,
go up to the gate, then go down to the start.

Review:

Steep fire road. Not very technical when dry, some
parts gooey when wet (mainly Stanford Avenue side).
Can get very windy. Can go really fast, but be careful
because there are hikers and horses there. Not much
shade. Good views.
