I rode the entire greenbelt including the upper loop and the lower section out and back between Campus Dr. and the Plunge. This entire ride is around 9 miles.

Review:

I parked at the Park on the South side of the upper loop above CSUH ( I think it's called Highland Park). From here you ride down a fairly steep section with a few switchbacks, through a small creek crossing, and join the main trail by one of the largest Eucalyptus trees I have ever seen. This place does stay pretty wet, & consists of narrow fire roads or doubletrack. While the trails would not be considered technical in decent conditions, the mud can make it tough going. Some of the creek crossings (5 or 6 total) I walked, but others I could ride through. Take your pick. There are a few sections of loose rock, but mostly it's just dirt road riding. Some of the climbs are steep enough to be challenging in dry conditions, and are worse yet when muddy. This will be a nice training loop in drier conditions, when there is more daylight after work. Till then I'll go elsewhere.
Watch for hikers as this area is ringed by homes and families walk here. The original reviewer who claimed to have "mobbed" down the trail at 45 mph in here is nuts, full of it, or both. Why bother, the trail isn't that challenging, slow down and enjoy the forest, and try not to kill the locals.

This Trail is sick because there are trees all over and and a few tight turns. Just watch your self on the first turn, its a tight one and very rutted out on the first part. I would recommend this trail for beginners because its a really fast trail. Good luck!

Climb up from the Plunge on the Wally Wickander Trail. Climbing generally steeper to the left of Oaks Dr. and descent sweeter coming down from the right.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chabot Loop (incl. MacDonald Staging Area), East/West Ridge (incl. WildCat, Juaquin Miller, and Redwood Parks)

Review:

This is one of those trails in the East Bay that you try to keep secret. Mostly single track in shaded woods along a creek. Several technical creek crossings, challenging hill climbs, and a rockin' descent that starts with a steep section which still gets my stomach churning and knuckles whitening, but then turns into rolling hills down into the creek. Great ride, especially in the summer (well shaded), spring, and fall (colors and leaves on the trail are spectacular). Wetter and muddier than most other trails in the winter. Watch for hikers and horses, and control your speed near the trail's entrance points.
Now go make it your own secret trail.

I live near the East Avenue Park, so this trail is practically in my back yard. I enter at the bottom, and it starts out OK, but it gets really friggin steep and loose, so be careful. I did some hoofin it as it was just too steep in places for me. The place is totally creepy, like something you'd see in a Tim Burton flick. The trail ends up in a very sweet little housing development high above everything. I got up there just as the sun was nearly setting and it was awesome. I could see downtown San Francisco and even Sutro tower! I rode over to the other trail head that leads down into East Avenue Park and that is a nice little downhill section, with parts of it being really sloppy and loose and very steep. Be careful. Got to the little amphitheater area where it appears they've done some satanic rituals and whatnot. Really, the place is creepy! Climb out and you're in East Avenue Park, then a few blocks and I'm home. It's a 6 mile loop that I just described. Very gruelling because of the steep climbs, but the downhill portions are sweet.

Next time I'm gonna start at the bottom, climb up to Durham and then descend.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Go to Santa Cruz whenever possible.

Review:

The hill is pretty steep, easy to get lots of speed on the downhill. However, there are lots of loose sections of trail which made high speed treacherous. I'd like to see the city come through there with a steamroller and pack the trail down. The near-constant shade is a big plus. Hayward can heat up.

Compared to other trails I'd say it's not very technical with the exception of the stream crossings--they're fun. Oh, and the bit of trail between a big drainage tube and a fence is challenging, too.

The moto section in the middle is a nice diversion from the bomb down or the hammer up.

I'd rather ride here than the Coyote Hills.

I used to ride BMX all the time when I was a kid and haven't riden in years! I finally got a mountain bike (2001 Fisher Paragon) again and this was the first real trail I've hit! It was awesome! You've gotta becareful when it's muddy and taking the turns, you can take a pretty long fall if you screw up which I almost did right off the bat. If you ride the trail at the corner of Durham, you've gotta becareful on an early turn. The leaves that have fallen make that turn super slippery... especially when it's a little wet. Hit both of 'em! they're were both great! also... be warned, I think I saw quite a bit of poison oak. I may have even gotten some when I biffed out on that first turn I was talking about above.

I'd say I'm a medium level rider, if you're not comforable on a bike, don't ride this trail. If you know how to use your brakes and move through the gears, hit it up! It's perfect for almost all levels.

but what do I know, I'm new to this again.

Trail Ridden: Ridden Once
Recommended Route:
Refer to map at Trailhead on Durham road
Take the Green Trail down (Trailhead on Durham Rd on left) . Take the Blue trail up (ends between some houses on Oaks Rd to make a nice loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mission Peak, Lake Chabot.

Review:

Descent is fast enough for an enjoyable ride on my full suspension and climb is moderate enough for my wife to climb (except for rocky section near the top of the Blue Trail short, steep, rocky section). Good to ride on hot days since overgrown trees create a great shade canopy. Wait about 2-3 days for mud to dry after some rain. Good trail to ride if you don't have much time.

Take 880 to Jackson Street, go east(away from San Mateo Bridge). Merge onto Foothill Blvd. Turn right on D Street, which turns into Fairview Avenue. Go uphill on Fairview. Turn right on Oakes, then right on Durham road. Durham is a small street, not to be confused with Durham road in Fremont. After about a hundred yards on Durham, you run into the Hayward Recreation Map at the trailhead.

I recently decided to ride this trail based on baconfingers' review. His review was spot on!

This is one of the best trails I've had the chance to ride on. The ups and downs on the descent are great fun and the foresty scenery that abounds throughout the whole trail is inspiring.

However, you will have to pay the Piper on the ascent back to your car. I found myself taking a few rest breaks on the way back up.

Overall, this is a great trail. Check it out if you're in the area.

Review:

This is an excellent ride for anyone with basic riding skills. You enter into a thickly forested area with a good dirt trail. A beautiful fern gully is on your left, with a creek running down the middle. There is actually a cool picnic area about a mile from the start of the trail.

Many short, steep downhill stretches allow you to gather lots of speed, but they are followed by steep uphill parts. This means you don't have to brake, instead maintaining momentum like on a roller coaster.

The total trail length, from top to bottom, is about three and a half miles. This makes the round trip about seven miles. Going back uphill is steep, but rideable.

Overall, it's an exhilerating ride through a very beautiful wooded area. It's shady and green from top to bottom.

Review:

First of all that previouse reviewer must be high. Follow the trail up about 1.5 miles you will hit a small BMX area. Cool place to goof off & smash your body into the ground because your not as young as you wish you were. Stop the bleeding & continue Lower rt. Past the BMX area to stay on the trail. Single track go's on about another 3/4 of a mile & you will ride between a large drainage pie & a cyclone fence up to a road. Cross the road go rt. up hill about 100 feet & enter trail again on left then you will ride up about 2.5 miles getting steeper & more rugged as you go. When you get to the street at the top proceed straight to the end of the long court in front of you. Here you will enter the trail back down. Oh hell Ya!!! this is a fun ride down. I know how to ride & wreck pretty good but you are not going to do 40 mph here baby. Once you get back to the road at the bottem you just jump back on the same trail you came up in the begining. It's about a seven mile ride with a decent but short work out to get to the top. Blast to ride down though short, it has some steep, & some high speed jumping sections of single track. Only bad part is it's way to small. No other real riding options there. Peace boy's
