Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Light weight, agile, fast
Weaknesses:No excuses now!
Similar Products Used:2007 Giant Trance 1
Bike Setup:Stock 2006 Anthem 1 (same as current Zero) Crossmax SL, Fox FL100, Manitou SPV, SRAM X0 shifters and rear mech.
Bottom Line:I owned the Trance for a year and a half, and found the predictable handling great for long rides to build skill and fitness. The extra travel saved me a few times with my limited abilities! After a while though, I felt I was ready for something quicker. I bought the Anthem because I was wanting a lighter bike for climbing and occasional racing and it is amazingly quick! I knew the bike would be faster but was also surprised with the plush ride. I highly recommend an Anthem to anyone wanting a light and responsive full suspension XC bike.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $2700.00
Purchased At:Bob's Bicycles
Strengths:Fantastic handling and great suspension.
Weaknesses:none yet.
Similar Products Used:Nearly every FS XC rig out there.
Bike Setup:Custom
Bottom Line:I have been riding and racing mountain bikes for 20 years and owned a lot of bikes...this is the best bike I have ever ridden! This is a true XC rig that flat out rails when you push it!

Who should by it? Anyone looking for true cross country mountain bike not one of the free ride bikes that some companies are marketing as cross country bikes.

Favoriate Trail:porcupine
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $3500.00
Purchased At:Cole Sport
Strengths:Very smooth ride, handles well the ability to lock the suspension makes those out of the seat climbs easy.
Weaknesses:Stock tires really suck. Took a few rides to get the rear shock dialed in. The mavic hubs still require way too much service.
Similar Products Used:Trek Fuel, Rocky Mountain ElementTeam
Bike Setup:Full stock setup with Time ATAC pedals.
Bottom Line:I debated between this and the rocky mountain team. Not being overly impressed with the Shimano brake system I went with the Anthem 0. I used this all last season for my XC race bike as well as two trips to Moab. This bike did not disappoint. It climbs with ease and handles the downhill great. My only complaint is that Mavic still seems to have a few issues with their hubs which required service 3 times last year. Good thing Mavic has such great customer service.

Favoriate Trail:Don Valley
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $2300.00
Purchased At:craigslist.com
Strengths:Amazing rear suspension! Feels locked out, when in pro-pedal. An XL frame actually fits like an XL frame. Stock component spec is very impressive for a $4000 DS bike. Climbs like a hard tale, and Descends like an all mountain. Talk about bang for your buck.
Weaknesses:I have yet to find any...not really a weakness more of a preference, but I hate carbon so I switched out all the carbon parts, seat post, handlebar, you get the idea, for high end Alu parts.
Similar Products Used:First DS owned. I have tested many others, such as: Yeti's, trek's, specialized, etc... Giant is the best so far.
Bike Setup:2007 Giant anthem 0 frame with 07 XTR Shadow rear dérailleur, 07 XTR Hydro brakes, 07 XTR rapid fire shifters, 07 XTR crank, Mavic 819/Chris King wheels, Thomson seat post and X4 stem, WTB seat, Easton EA70 low rise monkey bar, 07 fox F100 RLC, etc...
Bottom Line:If you are looking for the best bike for the best price, go with giant!

Date Reviewed: May 20, 2007
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Tracks how a cross country bike should. Light, Fast, Agile.
Weaknesses:Stock tires not well suited for local terrain.
Similar Products Used:Just about every major brand tried... work in the industry.
Bike Setup:SRAM X0, Avid Juicy 7, Race Face Crank, bar, stem, post. Upgraded to Crossmax SLR wheels(Black compliments light color frame nicely)
Bottom Line:A cross country bike that does everything you ask of it. Super responsive, super fast. Climbing is phenominal. Very impressive descending as well. Handles both large and small bumps without hesitation. A rear suspension system that truly does work, and does not rely on special shocks to function properly. I got to try just about every bike from most companies on loan in the industry. Runs circles around Specialized Epic. Trek still seems to be trying to figure out how to make a mountain bike. The Cannondale Rush Carbon and the Titus Racer X both deserve honorable mention as other great performers. But factor in price... There isn't a better pure cross country bike out there for the money. And if you have the extra cash, try the Anthem Advanced, you won't be let down. (No, I don't work for Giant)

Strengths:Light,comfortable & Quick
Weaknesses:None yet
Similar Products Used:Hardtails:XTC 1, GT Avalanche
Bike Setup:Standard except changed Raceface Next flat bar for Next low rise.
Bottom Line:A great bike, climbs extremely well & desends even better. Excellent through bumpy tracks such as forestry single track, soaks up tree roots perfectly. Just as quick as a hardtail on the hills or level ground. Fox Rp23 is great, propedal & maestro system work extremely well together. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to go full suspension

Price Paid: $4000.00
Purchased At:knicker biker
Strengths:Light, fast, great suspension platform, look/finish
Weaknesses:No higher lever component kick options
Similar Products Used:Owned: specialized enduro, Ellsworth moment, Santa cruz blur, Yeti Asr-sl.
Bike Setup:Upgraded to: m970 XTR cranks, Avid Ultimates (140/160 mm), XTR front der., m970 xtr cassette, Sid World Cup fork. Italia Slr XC saddle. Race on Stans ZTR wheels. 23.1 lbs / 22.0 lbs with stans wheels.
Bottom Line:I was not sure what I would think of this bike considering it's steep head tube angle and suspension I had never ridden.
Verdict is that I love it. I hope more people consider this bike when choosing. It is fairly light out of the box (24lbs) , but the thing I am most impressed with is the way the suspension rides. I hate bike that aren't efficient and I have no problems with this one. with pro pedal it climbs great and it can sprint. This is great combined with the fact that it feels plush when soaking up bumbs. For this reason I like it much better than my Yeti Asr-sl from last year. I have also not had any problems with its head tube angle. I like the way it handles, even on fast decents.
I recommend everyone try this bike, it offers a good amount of travel over some other race bikes, but not as much as 4 inches which may be slight excessive for racing. Don't overlook Giant because of its name, I have had some great bikes but this is favorite so far.

Favoriate Trail:Pacific Palasades Hawaii
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Hornet sports Guam
Strengths:Climbing
Weaknesses:Technical down hills
Similar Products Used:Giant NRS
Bike Setup:Reba SL fork Shimano XT drive train Race face Cranks, FSA OC 115 stem carbon bars, FSA Carbon seat post Hayes hydo Brake
Bottom Line:I bought the Alum team issue frame to replace my NRS 1. This bike climbs like a billy goat on EPO. With the Reba and the Fox RP 23 in the lock out mode coupled with the rear supension design makes for a perfect climber. No bobbing or "monkey Motion".
On the down side though, on steeper climbs you have to pay really close attention and stay low over the handle bars to keep the front end down. This bike is also very quick in the handling department. When going down tech hills you can easily over steer. But once you have a few rides to figure this out you have no problem and the bike performs Great. This is a great racing frame/Bike. A great price for a light and responsive Frame.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Bikes and Beyond
Strengths:Light weight, stiff, very efficient riding postion and climbing bike. The juicy 7's work well and have an excellent feel and modulating capacity
PROPEDAL
Weaknesses:Tyres and tubes as I had a flat in the first 25 km. Will most likely change to tubless. First bike with sram shifters and I am just getting use to them
Similar Products Used:I have a Trance 2 that I have raced for two years, Klien Attitude
Bike Setup:I have Candy SL pedals and have the cut the width of the bar down by an inch, other than that it is stock for now but thinking of changing to tubless
Bottom Line:Great investment for the money. The owner of the bike shop where I purchased the bike from knows my limits and the way I ride. I typically let him pick my next bike for me (this is my 6th bike in 6 years) and he picked me a winner again.
Great bike for those techo riders who like to dial in their settings to their ride and the conditions.

Favoriate Trail:Raccoon Mountain Trail System
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $3000.00
Purchased At:East Ridge Bicycles
Strengths:Super Light (24#) bike. Climbs like a jet, especially using the Propedal setting on rear shock, absorbs the bumps like no other. Fox F80 front shock, RP23 rear shock, X.0 rear deraillier, Crossmax SL UST wheels. Corners like it's on rails. Avid Juicy Seven Hydraulic disc brakes are tops.
Weaknesses:Comes from the factory with Hutchinson Pirahna Tubed tires which aren't real aggressive but have low rolling resistance. They ride over the rocks better than my IRC Seracs did and they corner well after you get used to them. Will eventually install a set of UST tires.
Similar Products Used:Used NRS 1 for 5 years and test rode the Anthem 2.
Bike Setup:Everything is factory as listed above. Many components are carbon. I installed Crank Brothers Eggbeaters SL pedals which I am still getting used to.
Bottom Line:This bike is in a league of its own and makes my NRS 1 seem more like a hard tail. This 24# bike climbs, descends and corners like none that I have ridden before. If you want to save some money and only ride a couple times a month try the Anthem 1, which is about $1000 less but, if you can spend the money, this bike will make every riding dream of yours come true. Rode this bike 14 miles on Intermediate to Advanced trails this past weekend and was still doing short sprints to the parking lot with my friends.

Favoriate Trail:Whiting ranch, Luge, Old Camp, Laguna Beach Canyon, El Morro, Crystal Cove, Fullerton Loop
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $3260.00
Purchased At:Amazon bikes
Strengths:Light, stiff, great Sram XO components,
Weaknesses:It takes awhile to dial in the rear suspension on the trails that I take.
Similar Products Used:Stumpjumper expert, Epic Marathon Carbon, test rode ( used )Epic S-works, Santa Cruz Blur XC.
Bike Setup:Race Face Deus cranks, Crank Bros. candy sl pedals, next carbon low rise handle bars and seat post, Sram XO carbon levers, Sram XO rear deraileurs, Mavic X-max sl wheels, Hutchinson python tires.
Bottom Line:Very good bike for dedicated x-country riders. Stiff, light and fast on the track. It corners very well. The bike encourages the rider to push to its limit. Outstanding climbimg characteristics. Accelarate or hammer the climbs and the Maestro suspension will do its job. No bobbing or adverse effect on both the bike's frame and suspension. Pedal input is very efficient.

Going a little bit too fast on a downhill, technical terrain or switchbacks? Scrub your speed with confidence. No brake surge or suspension stiffness on hard braking.

This bike meets my expectation for a short travel x-country bike and then some :) Very recommendable for the riders who wants to go serious on the x-country side of mountain biking.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $3800.00
Strengths:the anthem 0 is light and nimble, the suspension is very tuneable and plush it is VERY nice to ride
Weaknesses:tricky to get suspension dialed in right
Similar Products Used:giant nrs2
Bike Setup:bought candy eggbeater sl pedals
Bottom Line:This is a brilliant bike, you definately get what you pay for, although I have only ridden 50 ks on it so far. It has top notch components in the sram xo rear mech, raceface next, mavic crossmax and the fox suspension is high quality unlike my manitou minute fork on my vt. If you are a racer looking for a light dual suspension bike, seriously consider buying this. If you are an all mountain weekend warrior there are many more suitable bikes out there. When you are riding this it feels as if there are no hills you can't blast up or any downhills you can't fly down, it is very confidence inspiring and can be thown around on tight singletrack with ease. It corners like it's on rails and the juicy sevens do a great job of pulling you up.

Favoriate Trail:Foresthill loop
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $4000.00
Purchased At:Coates Cyclery
Strengths:Built well, light, stiff, quality components.
Weaknesses:Giant lock on grips are too small for my hands.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Epic, Giant Trance 1
Bike Setup:Changed wheels to 36 hole xc717s, and ODI Rufian grips. I am big and heavy and needed a little extra wheel under me.
Bottom Line:I am 6'4", 200 pounds and love to climb hills. This bike is the perfect combination of suspension, light weight and strength for my type of riding. It is not a downhill machine but a great XC bike that can be ridden hard. I choose this bike over the Trance because I have ridden hardtails all my life and loved it, but am getting old and wanted to smooth the trail out a little, the trails haven't changed but I have.
