$1150.00 | | Strengths: | Well balanced and handling first 500 miles in moderate trail-n-ravine riding. Bike felt suprisingly agile. | | Weaknesses: | Rear suspension main pivot poorly machined, apparently filled in with adhesive. Tora fork quickly loosened up at crown/steerer press point. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized | | Bike Setup: | Trail, XC | | Bottom Line: | Entry level bike that quickly wears down. At about 600-700 miles, a purple powder kept showing up at rear suspension main pivot. after this, the rear frame became more sloppy at each ride. around the same time, the steerer tube began to creak and crack inside the fork crown.(Tora 289) I'm not an aggressive rider, so this was suprising. It appears that the frame was machined oversized and compensated for with "lock-tite", basically filling the gap between rear pivot bearings and frame. BB5 brakes also horrible, not enough pad area. Upgraded to 7's on the brakes. Replaced fork with Revelation 426. Rear pivot solution still in work... Light duty trail rider with cash to spend? This bike's for you. Aiming at training into more aggressive riding from an entry level? Look for better frame quality. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from South Africa Date Reviewed: March 24, 2008 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | Lovely frame, Rock Shox Mc 3.3 rocks, strong, durable and just plain value for money | | Weaknesses: | A little play on the main pivot bearing, but that was fixed free of charge | | Similar Products Used: | Read previous review | | Bike Setup: | Read previous review | | Bottom Line: | This bike is the sh*t, I had my doubts but it is worth every penny. I do everything with it, from not to extreme dh to xc racing. The frame is stiff and solid after bearing fix and not too heavy! With my setup it is better than the EX 8, minus the pivot on the rear triangle. If available get this bike with the Rock Shox Mc 3.3 and get crackin, you'll not be dissapointed. And for brake jack, it is minimal, not even a concern. Giant is good, Trek is better. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1200.00 | | Purchased At: | St Helena Cyclery | | Strengths: | Great for downhill riding, good front suspension. | | Weaknesses: | Tires, rear shock, bike is heavy. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized, Cannondale, Rocky Mountain, Giant | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for Crank Brothers Candy pedals. | | Bottom Line: | If you are looking for a moderately priced bike that can do well on downhill rides as well as a bit of cross country riding, this bike is not a bad buy. I do find this bike a bit too heavy and the tires perform very poorly in mud. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1400.00 | | Purchased At: | www.gdcycles.com.au | | Strengths: | I was stunned when I got on this bike and there was no bouncing around like my old dual Xc bike. It's like driving a 2 wheeled car over everything, the suspension does it's job so you can do yours. I like the tyres, thought I wouldn't but they've surprised me and are much faster than the Michellin all mountain tyres I was running on my other bike. | | Weaknesses: | I'm swapped the sram for deore right off the bat, I've got sram on my Giant AC and will always use shimano after that. The only thing I've noticed so far on the Trek ex5 is the suspension compressing when you stand up to pedal, other than that, it's a machine. I found it to be much lighter than my old xc bike too which is a nice feature | | Similar Products Used: | Wheeler czx 4000, | | Bike Setup: | stock accept for changing over the rear derailleur to Deore, same with the shifters. Also using clipless pedals instead of the toe clips supplied | | Bottom Line: | For an extra $700 I can upgrade to a rear shock which won't move no matter how much I stand up to pedal, other than that, this bike is an awesome buy and one that I'll be happy with whether it be on a tricky technical downhill, (going down or up) or cruising the streets with. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The frame feels solid and with little or no flex. My EX weighs in at 12,5 kg, about 800 grams heavier than my Anthem, and climbs with ease thanks to the Rock Shox MC 3.3 lockout settings. This bike is a true all rounder, from racing to trails, it's not the lightest bike on the block but adjustability makes up for it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1420.00 | | Purchased At: | http://www.slalom.co.il | | Strengths: | Excellent frame comparing to its class. The fork performed well! | | Weaknesses: | Heavy, hard on hills, rear shock has no rebound, which discovered as a big drawback. The rear derailleur (Sram X.5) is BAAAAD weekly adjustment and even hangar replacement by the dealer won’t help, it just doesn’t… the crank start to make loud noise “cracks” when riding while I stand on the pedals. Did I say that the Sram X.5 rear derailleur is BAD?
| | Similar Products Used: | Yeti 575, Specialize and cannondale. | | Bike Setup: | Standard | | Bottom Line: | Very good bike in its class, cannot compete with Yeti, but wins others at the same price (I leave in Israel, that why all the prices are high). If I had to keep riding this bike I would replace the Sram X.5, actually “I wont touch it even with a stick”. The front fork performs surprisingly well comparing to its class! Make no mistakes it is grate value for the money.

$1200.00 | | Purchased At: | Total Sports | | Strengths: | Great bike for the money, | | Weaknesses: | Bike is heavy, and whats with the basket pedals? | | Bike Setup: | stock, except for rear shock (upgraded to MC 3.3 and clipless pedals) | | Bottom Line: | The bike is geat for hill climbing and descending, I ride a very technical course and the bike makes it easy. With the exception of the rear shock I don't see any component upgrades needed in the distant future. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1400.00 | | Purchased At: | Geared | | Strengths: | Lightweight, Hydraulic Disks, Lock out suspension | | Weaknesses: | Standard Tyres | | Similar Products Used: | Saracen RAW2, Muddyfox SFX04 | | Bike Setup: | Standard | | Bottom Line: | I have recently purchased this bike and it is fantastic. It is excellent value for money with a good standard of components all round. My usual route has some testing climbs and fast rough terrain downhills. This bike makes light work of everything. One of its best features is a lock out on the suspension. You have to switch a small lever and it turns into a hard tail which makes climbing so much easier. It has air suspension which is fully adjustable meaning that whatever your weight the bike can be altered to suit without the need to buy new springs. The only let down is the Bontrager tyres which are extremely poor and I will be replacing them asap. They skid very easily when riding down routes with any horizontal slope and are the noisyest tyres I have ever owned when you get to a section of road. Overall I love this bike and cant wait to get back on it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1150.00 | | Strengths: | Great Frame, Front fork-Tora 85-130mm, Great Handling, Its a Trek. Light | | Weaknesses: | Wired stock pedals, minor shift problems nothing major | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale Rush, Gary Fisher HIFI | | Bike Setup: | MC3.1 rear shock, rock shox tora fork, SRAM mech. disc | | Bottom Line: | Amazing bike for the money. I was surprised that mine actually came with the Rock Shox MC 3.1 instead of the BAR 1.1 Fork is decent. This bike is also quite light. Buy it if you like hard XC riding. I dont think that there is a better bike for the money. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1150.00 | | Purchased At: | Sport Tech | | Bike Setup: | Trek EX5 with Bontrager CMZ saddle, Wellgo WAM B25 patform pedals and Easton bar (I like it because it's wider than the Bontrager. | | Bottom Line: | This is a follow up review now that I've had the bike for a little while. On hard trail rides this bike is great and inspires confidence that my hardtail could not. The Rockshox Tora fork came with a plastic travel adjust knob that broke the first time I used it but Rockshox sent a new metal one because they are aware that this is a problem and the new knob works great. The fork feels nice but makes a sucking noise when rebounding. The front disc brake speeks a bit but I heard that this is common and stops after they're broken in. Great stopping power. The seat sucks and you should have the LBS replace it as part of the deal. The bike has a nice freeride like geometry that the previous fuels did not so it feels more like a trail bike than a cross country bike which is a good thing for my local trails and makes downhills really fun. I've really beaten this bike the last couple of rides and am impressed with its durability. The color is a little on the "girly" side but looks good once you get it dirty. The suspension feels nice but has no adjustability. I don't care about this but many obviously will want to upgrade the shock. Finally, the bike is heavy as hell but that makes you strong and it does hide it's weight pretty well. I'm very happy with it. Cables rub the paint quickly so if you care about that use some clear automotive duct tape on the frame under the areas where the rubs happen. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1200.00 | | Purchased At: | Fox Firestone NSB | | Strengths: | Trek technology, great geometry, Rockshox U-turn adjustable travel Fork, Avid Brakes. | | Weaknesses: | toe cage pedals? | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 4300, Haro V3 | | Bike Setup: | Upgraded from Rockshox Bar 1.1 to MC3.3 rear shock. Animal "Steve Hamilton" BMX pedals. | | Bottom Line: | I was going to go with a Hardtail and ended up with this instead. I regret nothing!! The bike handles like a dream and so far has proven bullet-proof. Trek has been around the block and backs up their frames for life, which is nice.
This bike more than makes up for my lack of skill, and is definately confidence inspiring. Same ZR9000 frame as the higher end Fuels with more do-able price for those on a budget. Upgrading is expensive, and I dont feel that I'll need to for quite some time. Go buy one. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1177.00 | | Purchased At: | sport tech | | Strengths: | Great paint job, rock shox suspension, good components for price, Trek warranty and support. | | Weaknesses: | Hard Saddle. Goofy pedals. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 3700 | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for saddle (bontrager cmz), wellgo aluminum platform pedals. | | Bottom Line: | Purchased this bike but it hasn't come in yet. Demo test only. It states on this site and in the dealer catalog that the frame is ZR9000 aluminum but it is not. I contacted Trek and they confirmed that the frame is SLR aluminum. However, bike shops are using the catalog sent to them and telling customers that it is ZR9000. I'll write a more in-depth review when I receive the bike and have some miles on it. From the test ride I love it so five chili's for now. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
