Favoriate Trail:so many...
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:Foundry Cycles
Strengths:price (Merida aren't well known in the UK)
made for XC
Weaknesses:Frame paint/lacquer could be stronger
Few rear shocks compatible
Similar Products Used:none - first full susser
Bike Setup:RockShox Revelations, Mavic F219s, XT front and Deore rear hydraulic discs, all else as supplied (LX and Deore chainset, IKE other bits).
Bottom Line:I bought this full-suss because after the manufactured singletrack I was used to in Wales, the natural, rock and root-filled trails in Scotland were killing me on the hardtail. This seems to do everything I ask of it in terms of what I'd call agressive XC. I also find it to be a long bike but a stem adjustment would probably change that if you wanted. I hesitate to comment on climbing/descending ability as I reckon that's more down to the rider, but I certainly haven't noticed more people overtaking me than before in either case!

My one reservation - which I didn't realise at the time of purchase - is that the rear shock is 320mm eye-to-eye. This means that it is not compatible with most rear shocks on the market, i.e. you're limited to one manufactured by Manitou or DT Swiss (with some kind of adaptor bracket) if you want to upgrade. That said, the S:light one that came with mine seems to do the job fine - little bob on the climbs but only air preload and rebound adjust, none of the fancier stuff. Then again, I have nothing to compare it to in my experience - maybe other shocks are much better.

I like this bike, but I'm going to give this 3 chillis rather than 4, because (i) I don't have anything to compare it to in terms of full suspension and (ii) I really think the lack of replacement rear shock options is a flaw. If you're looking to jump off big drops, I suspect this won't be for you. If you're looking a good all-round XC trail bike for a reasonable price, it's worth considering.
