$40.00 | | Purchased At: | specialized.com | | Strengths: | Great wet and light mud tire. Grips very well on wet and muddy trails.
| | Weaknesses: | Thick mud and wet wood. | | Bike Setup: | 2005 EPIC S-Works Polished with XTR and whole bunch of weight-weenies parts | | Bottom Line: | I just raced the 1st race of the '06 Root66 series. It rained/sleeted/snowed out the entire morning into the mid day of the race. I decided to swap out my UST CrossMark tires for a pair of Houffalize UST tires. I'm glad I did. These tires did an amazing job of gripping to the trail. The single track was greasy and rocky. These tires never slipped when the trails were wet or lightly muddy. Only when I would ride over a wet root or tree would the tire slip. The tire also sheds mud very well.

$35.00 | | Purchased At: | Gray Goat bike shop | | Strengths: | Fast great rolling tire, very nimble and light does great is wet sloppy mud, the skinny tire cuts through the top layers of mud and allows it to grip the tacky dirt underneath. Tires can be mounted on front or rear. | | Weaknesses: | A bit sketchy on the corners, most likely due to the 1.8 width which is to be expected. At higher pressures (40psi plus) it won't grip roots or logs very well on climbs, at 33psi is it better but the lug pattern is closely spaced so it tends to spin a bit on roots and logs and slick wet rocks. | | Similar Products Used: | panaracer fire xc pro, wtb V. Raptors, others... | | Bike Setup: | specialized epic pro, canecreek disc wheels, hayes hfx 9, sram x-9 drive train, rock shox psylo race, eggbeaters | | Bottom Line: | I was skepitcal about these tires after mounting them and seeing how skinny they were, but my first ride was in a rain storm and some sloppy mud. The tires did great in the mud and cut through the slop and climbed really well at 33psi and descended great also. The next ride a few days later was in tacky wet conditions and the tires completly balled up with mud. A few days later we rode a faster trial that was mostly dry and at higher speeds these tires felt unstable in hard corners but did ok othewise. Overall these tires are great in sloppy wet condtions and moderate in all others, I feel like there are other tires that have a better overall rating in more varied conditons. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
