Description:Rockshox Coupedeluxe Rear Shock

Submitted by Anders a Cross Country Rider from Sweden
Date Reviewed: November 28, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:came with the bike
Strengths:durability, low maintenance
Weaknesses:heavier than air shocks
Bike Setup:97 GT LTS 2 with RS Duke Race.
Bottom Line:I've been xc-riding with this shock for 5 years now, and have never had any problems. I tuned the coil when it was new and put a lizard skin over it, and I haven't touched it since then. After reading the reviews here I became a bit concerned that not even this shock will last forever without love and care, so I removed the lizard skin for the first time today and oiled the piston. I expect it to last for many rides to come if I continue to oil it occationally.
The LTS is designed for this shock and I'm happy with how it feels, so if it eventually breaks, I'll try to find the same shock again. If I can't find one, I'll probably try an air shock to save weight.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:hasn't broken (yet)
Weaknesses:doesn't work terrifically well, not enough adjustment possible without disassembly, dubious spares availability (for anything from Rockshox or Manitou)
Bottom Line:Despite replacing the spring, fiddling with the damping, etc, the shock has never worked as well as I would like. I don't have enough mileage on the competition to know if my expectations are realistic or not, but it seems to me that it should be possible for the thing to have enough damping to prevent vertical takeoff over water bars, while at the same time remaining reasonably active on stutter bumps.

Still waiting for it to die so can justify something which works better.

The spring is a nice shade of red though...

Bottom Line:The bottom line is if you have a GT LTS and need a new shock then you either have a RockShox Coupe Deluxe or need one. If you have one the seals will adventually leak. I have found that it is easier to replace the shock then try to rebuild it. The advantage to this is you can get new bushings with a new shock. There is a company on the web called ICYCLES that sells replacements at a ridiculously low prices. Just buy a New one each time you blow the seals out so you can spend your time riding and not wrenching!

Strengths:will never wear out - because it's never on my bike!
Weaknesses:made by rock shox
Similar Products Used:pogo stick, matress spring, slinky.
Bike Setup:specialized fsr extreme , lots of nice bits -no rear shock.
Bottom Line:This is a cheap shock with a pricey sticker on it, rock shox are unhelpfull who's answer to every problem is "upgrade" even if this means slagging of their own products!
Any riders over 17 stone might as well take this shock an throw it in the bin as it is impossiable to get heavy rated springs for them- infact it's not posiable to get any spares for them ....."just up grade- you know you want to"

Strengths:Seems to be maintain settings, provides sufficiant dampining and rebound control. Works even better with 800x1.5 spring.
Weaknesses:Rock Shox, Customer no service. After finaly blowing the seals I found the people at ROMIC mfg ready willing and able to rebuild my shock better than new!! Yes it actualy functioned better after the rebuild then when new.

Bike Setup:GT LTS 1000 XT/XTR MANITOU X VERT(ROCK SHOX JUDY XL BLEW)
Bottom Line:I have been riding this bike for three years and only blew the shock once. Considering I'm a 210lbs rider it seems to work well. Experts tell me the LTS design is best suited for lighter riders, well its been a lot more fun then my hard tail and easier on the body.

anyway after about a year and a half of hard street, jumping and DH riding the shock started dribbling oil very slowly.. so the bike has no damping or rebound control... and i can bunnyhop twice as high as i could before...

Weaknesses:seals...customer service
Bottom Line:When I told them that there was "airation" you know the sound. it is the Swish swash sound...and there was no damping(compression or rebound) they laughed, but when I asked him if he was an engineer he said "no, but what does that have to do with anything?"....he who laughes last laugh's best. A shock works best when the air(nitrogen) is seperate from the oil. The oil is pushed back and forth thru a valve which controls the movment if air gets in there it skips(kida of like the chain skipping a tooth on the sprocket. For all of the people who haven't had a problem with there rock sux deluxe ....sell the bike and buy a hard tail, from the sounds of it you people could ride if you life depended on it...I am far from a Pro Downhiller but I have managed to blow up this shock twice each time has taken over a month to get back...you do the math 1+1=dog Sh*t...ROCK SHOX SUX

Bike Setup:I use FOX, they have been making shocks since the 70's
Bottom Line:If you like stuffing granades up your butt ...then this is the product for you. I have had three of these things blow up and have seen many many more explode...spewing oil everywhere, infact I have seen one of these come apart completely, rendering the bikes useless(having to carry the the bike home). Bottom line--if your bike came with it I feel sorry for you, if your in the market for an upgrade...then you shouldn't downgrade to a Rock Shox. Strengths:Can be used as a deadly weapon against a Rock Shock technician. If your into pogo sticks, this shock's for YOU!!!
Weaknesses:Limited life expectancy. Leaks like a sieve. Poor, poor , poor customer support!
Bike Setup:Schwinn Straight 6
Bottom Line:I swore that I would never purchase another RockShox product years ago when at a national race I handed my Mag20 to the RockShox mechanic for a tune-up. I told him that the fork had no dampening or rebound. He turned to me and replied "dude, it's not the forks fault 'cause that thing never worked right.. it's the riders fault for not purchasing a new fork that's why they came out with the new Mag21". Unfortunately, years later I became reinvoled with RockShox after purchasing what I thought was an otherwise superior DH racer. The first shock worked fine until the adjuster knob came off, and off it went to RockShox for service. It has since been back to RockShox 3 times, and has never been fixed properly. The first time it came back oil just spilled out of the piston with each stroke and it took them two months to fix. The second and third times the turnaround time was near a month and although the shocks didn't leak oil, it still had no rebound or dampening. I mean pure pogo pleasure! RockShox has given such poor customer service I'd advise anyone never to buy their crapy products. But if you do have a Straight 6 and plan on keeping it for some time I advise you get to your local distributor and get as many rebuild kits as possible because this shock is no longer being manufactured and it will just be a matter of time when that mechanic at the races tells you "hey dude, it's not the shocks fault it doesn't work 'cause it never did, its the riders fault for buying it!" You know what RockShox "F... You!!!"

Well that was only because they were running at least 2 months behind in repairs. Now that they are back to a reasonable (reasonable according to who?) 1 month (not including shipping time) you have to wait for your shock to be fixed. So I bought a Stratos and it is awesome! I put it back together using locktite. Now my damping is back and the shock is working good so far. I really hope I get some time out of it. I will give it 3 flamers beacuse it works really good, but I dont think everyone will fix it the way I did. I had no choice this happened on a wednesday and I had to race that Sunday. Bottom Line:I have read a number of these reviews and can only come to one conclusion, the people who are happy with the product do not write in. I've had it for a year and this is the first review I've written. I have owned or used various Fox shocks on both bicycles and snowmobiles and have found them to be very unreliable and maintenance intensive. When they work, they work well, but the reliability is just not there. My Rock Shox shock has worked perfectly for the past year down to temperatures of -15 with no ill effects. The rebound adjustment works and is very handy during the cold temps. My most recent experience with the Fox Vanilla R shock on my girlfriend's Trek VRX was with a shock that ceased working after less than a month. I have no explanation for why there are so many bad reviews on this site. My experience has been very good and my previous dealings with Rock Shox warrenty and service department left me coming out ahead when I returned some forks for worn bushings. I guess if you are looking to buy this shock as an accessory you should ask local riders if they are having trouble with it in your area. Up here in Alaska this shock works far better than the Fox products I have seen and used.

Date Reviewed: February 20, 1999
Bottom Line:

I have nothing good to say about this shock.
I got one as a replacement (warranty) for my specialized AIM after the original deluxe died for the fourth time.
The first replacement I got weeped oil from the main seal out of the box, it also contained air in the oil and suffered from topout noise and shock with very little preload.
That shock lasted two months of riding, mainly around Christchurch about 200km in total before the main seal blew oil all over my bike. The replacement I got didn't have the air problems but didn't work well either. It is so harsh on compression that it kicks the back wheel up off the ground over small roots and rocks. It's also underdamped on rebound which worsens the previous effect. This is with a lighter spring than came stock on the bike.
That shock lasted only 100km of riding before I hit a rainrut with the rear wheel which blew the floating piston in the shock, letting nitrogen mix with the oil and turning a badly performing shock into a pogo stick.
I'm really getting sick of RS's badly designed and performing rear shocks, I haven't been able to ride my bike for 3 months in the two years I've owned it because I've been waiting for shock repairs or replacements.

I blundered by placing this note on the superdelux rear shock board.
Here it is where it belongs on the crap-delux BB.I can't believe Fisher is still spec'ing this crap on 1999 bikes.
My '98 Josh Z1 spent almost half the time on the rag last year as
it did ready to ride. Here's the poop though. If you get one of
these shox on your new bike and it works for you good!!! you are
lucky--play the Lotto. If, however, you have trouble like those
posted here, especially with the remote lock-out function, go directly
(call) to Fisher/Trek customer service and tell them you demand a credit
for the shock and have that money applied to a different shock.
This worked for me and I'm finally satisfied and riding a Statos Helix
Pro (It cost me an additional $75.00). I had to go through my dealer
to have this done, Fisher won't send you $$$ directly but it worked out
for me. I still can't believe Fisher hasn't learned from last year...

I've got a RS Coupe Deluxe pull shock on my Yet Lawwill and I can honestly say no complaints (touch wood) although by the tone of a lot of the reviews here I might be lucky. The rebound adjustbility really does make a difference and is great for tuning for different courses. One question I have is whether the pull shock comes in two different versions - my friend has a Lawwill 6 and it appears to have a longer stroke - or can you retune the shock to get a longer stroke?

I have a Rockshox Coupedeluxe on the back of my Fisher Joshua. The lock-out has broken twice in less than a year. Each time, Rockshox wants 2-4 weeks to fix the shock. Unacceptable.

ROCK SUCKS, would be the lingo now used in bike shops effeciently describing the quality of Rock Shox. I have had my Joshua X1 for a few months now and have had to take it in because the lockout cable keeps comming out of the shock, this would be the second time now. I'm not going to sit here and blame fisher for this defect but I do think they need to put a better shock than this piece of cra
