$25.00 | | Purchased At: | Nashbar | | Strengths: | It works well in a crash. I did a bad landing on a jump this week. Did an endo. I broke some small bones in my hand, bruised my ribs, and my neck suffered whipash from the head impact. The helmet shell cracked through, as well as the hard liner in several places. Visor blew off as designed. I sustained no head injury. | | Weaknesses: | It is an older model with the AccuLoc. Fit could be improved. During the impact, the helmet did tilt slightly to the right, tearing the top of my ear. It is hot. Can I say that again? It is hot. Needs better ventilation. | | Similar Products Used: | El cheapo's. | | Bike Setup: | Mongoose F/S. | | Bottom Line: | I'm buying a better Giro under their crash replacement program which gives a 30% discount, one with a RocLoc and better ventilation. Giro is a great company and believes in protecting the consumer and listens to their feedback. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Name sounds like "gero" which means "puke" in Japanese. | | Similar Products Used: | Bell Vertigo | | Bike Setup: | Scwinn banana seat heavily modified. 2 747 jet engines huge Catepiller tires. Twin M-60s on handlebars | | Bottom Line: | Comfortable. Fits wells. Crappy sweat pads stopped me from being a repeat GIRO customer. Has more foam than holes so will probably protect better. (see some of the helmet studies on the internut. WOuld give an addy, but don't remember them.) | | Bike Setup: | GT Outpost '99 | | Bottom Line: | I just picked up a bike a month ago after being off of one for about 6 years. So, when I purchased the bike, I also picked up a helmet. Tried a lot of them on at the store and this one fit me the best and the color was exactly what I was looking for. After fiddling around w/ the straps, I found it to be a snug fit and it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be. So far, so good. The price wasn't so bad, either. It fit better than some of the more expensive models on the shelf. My only suggestion is that the venting could be a little better. Yeah, they are..); very easy to adjust, and my head is irregulary shaped, too; the yellow-orange color is very high-vis, so my biking buddies can usually spot me on the trail (1/4 mile ahead of 'em); cool (temperature-wise, but also "cool," as in "hey man, cool lid!" | | Weaknesses: | The name: Giro - how do you pronounce that? Sounds Italian, but they're made in Santa Cruz, California | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized, Bell, Carboni, and a Russian made one that sounds like "gnadevrenskiet." | | Bike Setup: | I rent my hardtail Trek 480 from Cycle Sports in Oakland. Nice! | | Bottom Line: | All you poseurs out there that want to spend muchos pesos on fancy-shmanzy egg-shaped helmets because you think they will improve your performance are, well, wrong. They are all built to the exact safety standards, so even the $19.99 model you get at the drug store should suffice (assuming you get it to fit correctly). The Giro Torero is poly-adjustable, well-ventilated, has a low drag coefficient and is quite cheap, so...YOU BUY IT!

Madison replaced my crashed Giro in three weeks with a funky new yellow one - which was stolen almost immeaditely with my Bloc Stoats in as I unlocked my bike. Giro (through Madison) are replacing the lid for a nomial charge - who could ask for better service than that? It saved me in a horrible crash, is backed up by super serice and looks good as well. Of course is doesn't ventilate as well as some top range hat - it is a very cheap bargain lid. Last week I had a road 28mph wipeout. My front wheel was torn in half and I went some distance. The giro cracked at the back and split, but remained in one peice. So did my melon. It also stayed firmly on. Giro are now replacing it for £18. No annoting velcro like cheaper models. | | Weaknesses: | Not much, except the adhesive used to mount the Roc Loc near the ears will allow the pad to shift if you get a good tug/slide on that side of the helmet. | | Similar Products Used: | None, is my first helmet. | | Bike Setup: | A Wal-Mart Roadmaster with crap brakes, crap saddle, and crap everything. [Hey its just my cheap ride while I save for a Kona] | | Bottom Line: | The Torero I bought is a '98 model, I got it from Supergo as a closeout. I think they are going for 39 bucks. Anyway, it appears in the new 2000 Performance catalog that Giro has demoted Torero to its low-end stand by, which is sad. I wouldn't buy a 2000. The 1998 has the Roc Loc 2, the 2000 has the Roc Loc.
Anyway, its a great helmet, its saved me a few nicks, and luckily I haven't had to test its impact resistance, but I have total faith in it to protect me when I eventually do play human canonball.
One more note, my only complaint is that on a DH trip of mine, in which my brakes flew apart and left me to slide on my right leg for about 12 feet (pine tree stopped me), the padding near my right ear (which is sort of "glued" on) moved about an 1/8 of and inch. It was easily reattached in its proper place, but I can't help but wonder if it is a solid attachment when I really need it to be. No problems yet, knock on wood. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

My helmet straps keep coming unglued. If I ever have a bad crash, my helmet would likely not save my noggin. What a shame because this helmet was only $40 and looked like a bargain at the time. I am attempting to have GIRO rectify the problem, but have not heard back from them yet. In the meantime, I am going to rely on one of my old Bell backup helmets to protect my head. Another problem with this helmet is the ventilation could be better and seems to keep too much heat inside the helmet during warmer weather. If I don't hear back from GIRO soon, this hunk of junk is going to be used as target practice. My advice is to stay away from all GIRO helmets because they probably are not designed very well. Bell helmets have always been very good products for me so I probably will see about buying another one of them for racing. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

So the helmet works, but it does not ventilate AT ALL! After a few hours riding I used to get woozy and nauseous because of the heat building up in the helmet and the total lack of ventilation through it. Sweat was always dripping from my forehead. No matter what I did, even racing face down with the vents directly into the wind, it made no difference. The roc loc internal fixings were also always coming loose and falling apart, so the helmet could feel quite unstable on. But it did it's job when i crashed, but not when i was riding. Unless you ride in sub zero conditions and want to keep your head warm, get another helmet. Looks good though, I suppose, so OK if occasional rider. | Overall Rating: |
