Date Reviewed: November 8, 2002
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Pedal Performance
Strengths:Relativly low price. Bomber fork is indestructable. Nice paint job. Seat is quite comfy and nice.
Weaknesses:WEIGHT, this bike weights just over 30lbs!!!! The brakes suck. I wore out the pads in 2 months and had to take the brakes of the frame to recondition (sand) the mounts they were so rough. The bottom bracket flexes like an "al dente" noodle. The factory tires stink in mud, snow, loose gravel or sand, and they roll incredibly slowly on hardpack (good for training I guess). Wheels are constantly out of true, even with constant maintainence thus making the braking even worse. Shifting is impossible, the Sunrace/XT/Deore/ crappy cables combo just doesn't work even at the best of times. Riser bar is stupidly heavy and way to narrow.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper, Gary fisher Big Sur
Bike Setup:Changed to Hutchinson Python tires (now I almost like riding again) and a flat bar that is wider than the 22" stock piece of junk.
Bottom Line:This bike is a waste of money. The positives might look nice but they hardly make up for the potentially deadly(not the good kind of deadly either) performance of the bike on the trail. I would recomend buying any other bike in your price range than this one! This bike isn't good for anyone. Racers don't buy it, weekend warriors don't buy it, need something to get to the store and back.....don't buy this bike!

Purchased At:devon park pro hardware
Strengths:frame, stem, hubs, fork, brakes, drivetrain
Weaknesses:rims, handelbar, seatpost, saddle, grips, crank, pedals
Similar Products Used:trek 4900
Bike Setup:2.65 vee rubber ninja tire in front 2.1 panaracer in back, titec hellbent bar, intense look-on grips, 2 bolt seat post, sel italia saddle, fsa alpha drive crank, fsa ultimax bb, dmr v8 peddals, sun rhyno lite rear rim, skull valve caps(looks really cool), i use my bike to trial, jump and freeride!!!!!!!
Bottom Line:the best all-around bike ever made: the frame geometry is very forgiving: u can use it to do anything, if i knew i was gonna put this much money into ut i would still have done it i love my bike and there;s nothing like it on the market.........
get it before it gets u!!!!!

Submitted by Peter a Weekend Warrior from Toronto, ON
Date Reviewed: March 6, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $433.00
Purchased At:Toronto Int. Bike Show
Strengths:XT Rare Shifters, frame, other components
Weaknesses:Front Deore derailleur, shiny silver saddle tapestry
Bike Setup:Mazrocchi Z.5, 4Rox breaks, aluminum frame, deore/xt
Bottom Line:Great buy! Really solid bike for an occasional off-roader. Other, newer model bikes with these specs would cost twice the price if not more (who cares about being fashionable if you can save several hundred dollars and get a good ride in the end...).

Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:lifesport (Noah Rocks)
Strengths:drivetrain
shocks
Weaknesses:house brand stem crank and seatpost
Similar Products Used:kona nunu
rocky mtn fusion
specialized hardrock
Bike Setup:6061 aluminum frame, deore/xt, mazrocchi Z5 shocks
Bottom Line:First if you are some poser who blew all his student loan on a santa cruz so you could pick up chicks at the coffee shop dont buy this bike.

If your self esteem cant handle riding anything other than a fs specialized or trek dont buy this bike.

I was shopping for a good hardtail under 1000 cdn$ and was constantly amazed at the crap that big name builders (specialized, kona, giant, rocky mountain) are putting on good frames. I mean if I am dropping 1000 bucks on a bike i better get more than acera/alivio mix! I was thoroughly depressed and was about to give up and drop my coin on a kona when a friend told me to check out the oryx. I had never heard of it and was worried that it was some glorified dept store special, but i was in for a surprise.

This bike is perfect for a novice racer/serious rec rider. Great frame nice and stiff. Amazing components (when compared to competition). ANd a great price!!

My point??? Buy this bike!!!!! It'll even leave u enough money to buy a nice lid to protect that melon of yours. :)

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $995.00
Purchased At:the bike people
Strengths:Front Rockshox Judy TT's, Mechanical Disc brakes, shimano deore componets, all the components and frame are aluminum. Weinmann rims. The bike is make totally out of Aluminum & rubber!
Weaknesses:My first bike in two years, sold my VW to get it. My last bike was a dual suspension Pro-Flex. the first thing i noticed the slower you go the rougher the ride. this is probally going to to get some getting use to.
Bike Setup:Hayes disc brakes, weinmann rims (back) Sunrims ZJ18's (front), Schwable Black Shark 2.5 tires, Rockshox Judy TT's, Axiom 6160 aluminum stem, richley scuzzy logic cartrige, 4Rox 6061 Aluminum riser bars, Shimano Deore components, 4Rox 6061 seat post, Oryx Seat, Shimano crank (plan on upgrading to race-face crank when i break the shimano, it's only a matter of time.), With the add on's i probally brought the wait of the bike down to 25-26lbs.
Bottom Line:Awesome Bang 4 the Buck! the components are worth as much if not more than what i paid for the bike, massive prop's to Colin Gash who hooked me up big time at his shop for under $1000 bucks canadian.
