Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $474.00
Purchased At:EP'ed through The Pathfinder
Strengths:Quality steel ride at a great price, 853 w/OX Platinum rear triangle. Unbeatable ride for the price. Stable and very responsive handling in all conditions. I wne with the disk option with the custom paint job, goldrush over charcoal silver, makes for a great metalic olive green.
Weaknesses:As anyone reading reviews of Gunnars knows by now there is no clear coat and the paint can be prone to chipping. I highly recommend spending a little extra and getting a custom color or their "color of the month" it holds up much better and looks unique. I didn't have any problems with seat post slippage, but the collar looked cheap, I replaced the collar with a salsa liplock as soon as I bought the frame.
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Moab, Homegrown, Indie Fab & every other bike that comes into the shop.
Bike Setup:Fork:Fox RLC 80 (I cannot say enough good things about this fork)
Headset: Ritchey WCS
Stem: Thompson
Seat Post: Thompson
Selle Italia: Flite
Handlbars: Salsa moto ace flatbar
Levers: Avid Single Digit 7
Brakes: Avid Discs
Shifters: XT
Drivetrain: XT/XTR
Wheelset: Mavic Crossmax disc
Weight comes in at 25 pounds.

Bottom Line:I have had this bike for close to a year and have ridden it through the cross country terrain of Kansas as well as the harsh climbs and decents of Virgina where I go to college. It has performed admirably in both environments. The steel frame soaks up vibration and little bumps and responds very well to large ones. While in VA I race in the 6pack downhills. The Rockhound climbs to the top with ease and descends with confidence. If you're looking for a good all-around reliable/lightweight steel frame at a respectable price than this should be your bike of choice.

Strengths:Well-balanced geometry, nice construction, great value, good size availability, availability of custom sizing.
Weaknesses:I don't have two of them?

Rock Shox Judy SL fork
LX/Salsa Semi wheels
TruVativ Stylo Team cranks
ESP 9.0 shifters, brake levers, rear derailleur
Avid Arch Rival brakes
XT front derailleur, cassette, BB
Kenda Klaw XT tires (fat for loose stuff) and Kenda Klimax Lites (345 grams for those fast, hard trails)
Crank Bros Egg Beaters pedals (they're very nice)
Bottom Line:An awesome ride. This bike handles everything well. If I had to own only one bike for everything, this would be it. Sure, the frame isn't sub-three pounds, but that's what light tires are for (if you don't believe me, look in any physics text under "moment of inertia"). It's a balanced ride that climbs like a mountain goat while offering good downhill stability and great singletrack handling. It's the least expensive air-hardened steel frame I've seen, and it's constructed by framebuilders who know no superiors (those people at Waterford Cycles are the cream of the crop). I even like the color - "snow yellow."

Favoriate Trail:the one that goes thataway
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $275.00
Purchased At:ebay auction
Strengths:Climbs like a mountain goat on coke. Feels as stiff as alum on the uphill, but plenty of flex on downhill. Sub 4lb TIG-welded Reynolds 853 frame - what more can you say? Great customer service from Waterford.
Weaknesses:Slight seatpost slippage, but that could be the post.
Similar Products Used:Trek SLR frame
Bike Setup:Thomson stem and post; XT front and rear der and shifters, Avid arch rivals and 5.0 levers, SID XC fork, Easton CT2 bar, XTR + Mavic 517 wheelset, Race Face turbine LP crankset.
Bottom Line:After a month on this thing, I gotta say that I am really enjoying my return to steel. After riding a Trek SLR aluminum hardtail frame for most of the last 4 riding seasons, the Gunnar climbs just as well if not better and feels a lot like riding a softail on the downhills. The geometry is not for everyone - a 24.25" top tube on a 19" frame is plenty long, so you may need to get a shorter stem and a bar with some sweep to it. The only problem I've had was with some initial seatpost tube slippage, but Dirk at Waterford offered not only to send me a new Salsa fliplock for FREE (that's $30, kids), but also offered to have the seatpost reamed for me at the factory if I was still having slippage. That's the kind of customer service you just don't get from Trekkleinbontragericonfisher, Specialized, or any other mega-manufacturer. I got a screamin deal on a very slightly used frame, but $675 for a sub-4lb Reynolds 853 steel frame is an amazing deal. Steel is real, kids!

Favoriate Trail:flat creek
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1900.00
Purchased At:freewheeling
Strengths:it gotta be the way this thing climbs. the 853 frame loses almost nothing to bottom bracket flex but still takes the edge off coming down the back of the mountain. The steering is not so twichy that I can't correct any over steer before it's too late. Being able to but this bike built or as frame only was nice as I could build the thing with what I knew I wanted and not what was part of the package.
Weaknesses:About the only thing I can think of is the lack of clear coat on the paintjob. That and trying to find a dealer.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher (steel and carbon both)
Bike Setup:Manitou shock, full xt drive train, continetal cross country tires.

Date Reviewed: December 7, 2000
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1350.00
Purchased At:smiths bike shop, la crosse, wi
Strengths:This bike rips up the trail like no other (the road too)! Completely bomb-proof, with absolutely flawless welds. As the builders say, the geometry is perfect, allowing me to climb like a madman.
Weaknesses:The stickers come off too easy. Not very "astetically pleasing" to the eye...well of course until you ride it.
Similar Products Used:trek stp 400, some cool aluminum fisher with all xtr, and a stacked dean.
Bike Setup:2000 zochi z2 atom 80, xtr drivetrain, xt shifting/braking, tompson post, titec stem, cane creek c2 headset and some crazy-fast rolf dolomite wheels.
Bottom Line:An all-around animal...a true gunnar! I'm definately a heavy weight rider, topping the scales at 240 and after picking this sweet steel frame, I'm sure glad decided against aluminum.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:-Smooth and responsive in the singletrack
-Climbs like a billygoat
-Descends with authority
-Awesome ride for the money
-Not a mass production bike
Weaknesses:-No big deal, but the spec. sized (27.0) seatpost kept slipping. I fixed it by swapping with a 27.2 (fits perfectly). Semi-cheesy stock clamp replaced with Salsa.
Similar Products Used:-Aluminum mass production bikes.
Bike Setup:-RockHound, XT drivetrain (hollowtech cranks), LX brakeset, King headset, Bonty bar, Thompson post/stem, Judy Race, CrossRides, ATACs (in the mail).
Bottom Line:Just built up this frame and I've gotta say this bike rocks! I'm totally psyched that I chose the Gunnar over a mass-produced aluminum frame. I got soooo much more ride for my money! I can't believe how well this bike handles. Five flaming turds all the way!!

Date Reviewed: August 10, 2000
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Strengths:I have ridden a friends on good singeltrack. The bike was custom spec. with Z1 superfly, arch rival 50, 2x9gearing, and some light narrow tires. I'd have gone for some wider tires for not racing, but the bike was ready to race just as I rode it. I liked that it had a 4" fork on it to take on real rocks that typical x-c racers don't face and the brakes stop great. Quick but tireing on the climbs. If I were not racing x-c the small ring would be on. Top quality steel frame ride.
Bottom Line:Good hardtail for x-c racing or trail bike. Not a bike for the lift riders.
