Bottom Line:this is an update to my previous post. The frame broke today and Giant did not stand behind the warranty for the bike. This leaves me at a conclusion that no one should buy a bike from Giant because they are the worst people to ever try to claim on a warranty. DO NOT BUY A GIANT BIKE!!

Purchased At:AJ Barnes in Brandon FL
Strengths:Durability.
Weaknesses:Cheap stock fork, uncomfortable seat, & poor paint finish.
Bike Setup:Replaced stock RST fork with RockShox Judy XC; replaced stock tires with Panaracer Fire XCs; headset replaced with fork.
Bottom Line:I've been riding this bike for 17 months and over 4000 miles (mixed road and trail). The frame is durable - it takes a beating. I have noticed some sizeable areas near the chainstays and drop outs where the paint is flaking away. I replaced the seat only because I couldn't stand the stock Giant seat. The kevlar seams were rubbing my upper legs raw. I also put on Panaracer tires - hands down better than the original no name tires. I wore out the freewheel and the chain - but you can't do anything about that! Overall, solid value. it isn't the sexiest bike in the bike club but it works for me.

Favoriate Trail:Victor Falls
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Recycled Cycles
Strengths:Price, color scheme, aluminum frame, sturdy seat, decent Shimano components
Weaknesses:Weak stem (looks like it should be on a hybrid bike), so-so bar
Similar Products Used:First mountain bike
Bike Setup:Stock except for Richey Logic pedals and Michelin Wildgripper City tires (for commuting)
Bottom Line:Being an entry level mountain biker, I wanted to start middle of the road in terms of price. Man I scored big with this one. I'm convinced you can't get a better setup for the price. This bike has served double duty for me: banging the crap out of it on the weekends on singletrack trails, and commuting to work on the weekdays (I just change the tires). It has stood up to everything that I have thrown its way, and what's more, it doesn't piss and moan like me the day after a hard ride. Eventually, I will get a better stem and bar. I had been told not to get anything under a Shimano Deore derailleur, but the Shimano Acera that came with it has been a peach. I give it 5 turds-a-fuego all around.

Favoriate Trail:Castlewood
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $335.00
Strengths:The Rincon SE has a good Aluminum frame which is light-weight. The componants make it perfect for bikers that will cycle on paved or light off-road trails. The style of the bike is top-notch. The best thing about this bike is that it is LIGHTWEIGHT so you don't have to be and it is and comfortable bike.
Weaknesses:Anyone looking for a bike for XC or serious off-road trails, should not buy this product. The front suspension is for light performance making it ideal for road or dust trails but is not suitable for XC off-road racing. It is a comfort bike. It is not a good choice if you plan to race.
Similar Products Used:My first bike was a UNIVEGA Rover 301. My next bike was a bright orange Fuji Taho. The Rincon SE is my third bike.
Bike Setup:The componants include Shimano Acera rear derailer and an Alivo front derailer. The petals are metal cages. Front suspension is a SR SunTour M8040. The handlebar is raised to increase comfort.
Bottom Line:The Rincon SE is mostly made for bikers looking for comfort as opposed to speed. This bike is perfect for getting around town. It's lightweight frame and All-Terrain tires make it easy to get up hills comfortably. Plus, added speed and increased handling comes with the SR SunTour M8040 front suspension.

Rims are decent for the price. Sweet colors!
Shimano deraulier is qaulity.
Weaknesses:SR Suntour fork bottoms out easily and bobs alot.
SR Suntour crank has flexy arms and suffers from hesitant shifts. Tires are soft and crappy.
Similar Products Used:Giant Iguana. Giant Yukon. Trek 600
Bike Setup:Upgraded the cheap tires to IRC Notos (the best)
Swapped SR Suntour shock for Judy SL(sweet!)

Date Reviewed: May 14, 2001
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Performance
Strengths:Lightweight, decent components come stock, smooth shifting, comfortable ride, looks pretty sweet (I've got the 2001 model in charcoal and black)
Weaknesses:tires are a bit soft and the tread will wear out on you pretty quickly, suspension isn't adjustable (but you're not blowing a load of money in the first place)
Similar Products Used:My first serious bike
Bike Setup:Mainly stock--added a set of barends to make longer rides tolerable and a computer. I'll be replacing the tires soon.
Bottom Line:Like I said, this is my first serious bike since getting into the sport but I've got no complaints about this purchase. I wanted to get something that I could learn some stuff on and would take me through at least intermediate riding and this bike has taken everything I've dished out to it so far. I ride anywhere between 50 and 90 miles a week on paved and off-road surfaces and haven't had a problem yet.
Great bike for the beginner or lower level intermediate that doesn't want to blow any more money than they have to (at least not yet....) :-) Buy the bike...you shouldn't have any problems with it. 5 chilis for value (many props to Giant for not skimpin'), 4 chilis for overall---there are better bikes out there, but they cost a whole lot more.

The suspension...Sr suntour 8040 are extremely worth it, considering their great price, barely bottom out (I'm only a 120pound rider so don't hold it against me)they smooth out the big hits and bottom line their GREAT.
Weaknesses:The only weakness i found so far is the shifting,if you do not know how to shift properly there will some noise.

Strengths:Weight, strength, braking power, sick colours, great pedals,
Weaknesses:Standard front fork, tyres have a really soft compound - don't skid for too long on tar, paint chips easily. Get some Oury grips on there pronto.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh, Specialized and Kona
Bike Setup:2001 model, with longer stem
Bottom Line:A great bike to fang around on, scrap the tyres and forks and start again, forks are way too soft and tyres, well what can u say ? just crap. Bottom Line:Great entry level hardtail, launched a whole new out look on mountain biking for me. Quite disappointed that winter is here, but i look forward to spring coming so i can give x-c racing a try. The Rincon SE would be excellent for racing but i think that i have ridden out of it. I thought about upgrading it but it would be better to invest in another bike. But if you really want to get into it, GET NEW TIRES cuz the ones on there will wear down before you even get on the damn thing. also, i found that if your gunna do some serious pounding, get better shocks cuz if your fliyin off all the boulders you can find like me the shocks sometimes even bottom out( but they are good for basic trail riding) Overall, a pretty stoked bike and lotst a bang for the buck.

Bottom Line:I love this bike for light trails with the kids up to intermediate single track. Looks great, light (27 lbs), and solid. While aluminum is light its kinda "hollow" feeling compared to my friend's chromoly Iguana. Front shock is a life-saver and all for around 300 bucks!

Price Paid: $280.00
Purchased At:McCully Bikes
Strengths:(2001 model) Light, affordable.
Weaknesses:Both Derailleurs (front more so than the rear), and the Cranks flex a bit.
Bike Setup:Everthing stock except a stem and handle bar change. I opted for a 120mm 6 degree rise stem and a straight handle bar. These two changes were lighter and put me in a more racing posture while riding which I prefer.
Bottom Line:Great value, nice paint, and suitable for a beginner. Worthwhile upgrades include a better bar and stem. Maybe upgrading the cranks is worthwhile (if you can find a good deal on some). However I wouldn't go further, I would much rather save toward getting a higher end bike. Props to Giant for offering great value across their entire line of bikes.

Purchased At:East Providence Cycle, RI
Strengths:Strong frame, quick and responsive, pretty lightweight, good brakes, stock seat feels even better than my gel seat, silver/charcoal frame looks sick (2001 model), great price
Weaknesses:Grips are too hard, front fork isn't great either...
Similar Products Used:Older Specialized Hardrock, department store Pacific Mirage
Bike Setup:2001 model, stock except for Shimano clipless, but the fork and grips are next to go....
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the beginner/early intermediate rider. I hit twisty East Coast singletrack a couple times a week and it performs great in the technical stuff. It lands just fine on the little jumps and drop offs (3 ft and under). It handles better than the old Specialized too, IMHO. Most importantly it fits me like a glove... any leggy girls around 5'4" like me should check out the ladies' frames. It does need a better fork though, to be really sweet... any suggestions?

Strengths:The frame is nice n' strong, and this is good bike for the money
Weaknesses:The rims on mine got bent into a weird shape after many wheelie drops. The frame scratches easily. The deraillers really sucks, it keeps changing gears when I don't do anything. The stock fork also ain't so good.
Similar Products Used:Norco storm, Kona fire mountain

Bottom Line:If you're just getting into the sport of mountain biking, try this bike. But if you're already good at it, save your money and get a better bike. I've been using this bike for freeriding and it worked when I was just starting out with tiny 1 foot drops, but now that i'm working my way up to 5 feet, the rims are nearly dead. Strengths:I purchased the new 2001 model because of the availability of the aluminum frame, new front stem setup, and front shock travel distance. Giant make these improvements for 2001 without raising the price. Bike turns heads at trail meets. Very well built machine. Weighs less than a bowling ball.
Weaknesses:Front stem has only one inch height adjustability which I felt was not enough for a stock bike, and certainely not for my 6'2" 215 lbs on a 19.5" frame, but this was easily corrected by a stem extension from Giant.

Bottom Line:For an entry level bike, this is a good selection. It has an aluminum frame and basic shimano components. Tires are good, shifts are smooth, and brakes will stop you real quick. You will likely have a hard time beating this bike for $300, but for another $100 you can do much better. Since my budget for this buy was $300, this seemed to be the best choice in that range. Bottom Line:For this pricepoint there isn't much to set apart all of the available bikes. If I could do it all over again, I'd get the voodoo hoodoo from Supergo.com for $400. But anyways. Let's see, I ride about 2 - 3 times a week on some rough trails. I've managed to bend the rear derailluer hangar on the bike. I believe that the next Giant model up (yukon) has replaceable hangars. In other words, if u bend this part... like i did, the frame is useless. So look for a bie with a removable rear derailluer. Ask your dealer about this and look for it in your bike, lest you'll be out a frame like myself. I paid $300 for this but my roommate got one for $270 at Performance Bike. 3 flamin dookies cuz the hangar can't be replaced

Similar Products Used:Old Ross MTB
Bike Setup:Rincon SE w/ brake booster, rack, Blackburn wedge pack, Cateye Enduro 2.
Bottom Line:In just under 3 months, the front shock is leaking a little grease (has abated, though), the left pedal is clicking, and the rear wheel is out of true. Not what I expected, but I guess I should have for $270 (on sale at Performance... I missed out on a '99 Mesa GS for $339 aarghh), I now wish I had gone with the Yukon if only for the threadless HS and Al stem & bar.

The fork is nice for a guy who last had an MTB when he was 16, back when front shocks were fairly new. It really soaks up the bumps and knocks. Pedals are cheap and going to be replaced soon. I don't know who made that BB but I will be upgrading only as things wear out.

Great value, lesser overall. It is probably a toss-up on $300 hardtails, some bikes have better this or better that, but this one had what I wanted.
