Description:1999 Oryx HTA 500, mountain bike, front suspension, Mountain Mix components, Rock Shox Judy XC fork

Submitted by J.P. Money a Cross Country Rider from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Date Reviewed: June 7, 2001
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Purchase used
Strengths:Light, handles well on technical trails. Climbs well. Great components.
Weaknesses:Formula mechanical disk brakes. Requires a lot of adjusting. After a year of tinkering with them, I'm taking them off and going to V-breaks until I can afford a superiour set of disk breaks.
4ROCKS chain rings seem to wear out quite fast.
Similar Products Used:Norco Torrant
Bike Setup:Judy XC, LX front, XTR rear, XT V-brakes, Formula hubs,
LX shifters, Avid SD 2.0 brake leavers. Balance mix of Formula and 4-ROCKS
Bottom Line:Great value. This bike competes with those which cost 50% more. Great frame and components. This bike is for the intermediate to expert rider who is a little short on cash.

Favoriate Trail:Any at Pawtuckaway
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Recycled Sports
Strengths:XTR Rear, Light even considering weight of disc brakes
Weaknesses:Brakes are touchy -- you need to know how to work with them to make them tight
Similar Products Used:Other misc models and types
Bike Setup:Judy XC front suspension, Suspension seat post, XTR Rear, LX clipless, Formula disc brakes
Bottom Line:I like the bike. It is solid and dependable. Brakes take some fiddling, but work in any conditions. Front fork is plush although a little noisy, and the addition of the suspension seat post makes a great ride. If you're at least an intermediate rider and know something about MTB's then this bike is for you.

Date Reviewed: May 14, 2001
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Alternatives
Strengths:For a cross country frame, iit's been pretty good for putting up with small drops and dual courses. Great deraileurs/shifters. Time atac pedals are sweet too and an overall good components, frame and fork.
Weaknesses:BRAKES!!!
for a bike that comes disc ready its not that hard to upgrade and i suggest you do so before you get hurt. sell the formulas to some kid on a wal-mart bike. sprockets are weak too and some of the 4-rox stuff doesent last too long
Similar Products Used:norco sasquatch, gt outpost, specialized rockhopper, trek 8000....
Bike Setup:hayes hydraulic discs/levers, LX crankset, THE fender (cuz its spring), hutchinson python rear and velociraptor front tires, easton seatpost and handlebars
Bottom Line:I got this bike for cheap because i bought it the year after it came out and the local bike shoppe was clearing em out. ITs amazing for value(disc ready, lx xtr shifting, Z4's...) and after a few upgrades, this bike can be one tricked out racing machine and its built around a solid frame.

Favoriate Trail:Alpine In Vancouer
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Bike Depot
Strengths:It is a very light bike and has awesome acceleration.
Weaknesses:The disc brakes don't work! I took it for a test ride and hit a pedestrian. She jumped infront of the bike and the brakes hardly worked and I hit her in the back of legs. The brakes have absolutely no power and the pads need atleast a few months of hard riding. This bike is a piece of junk!
Similar Products Used:My Ass.
Bike Setup:nothing
Bottom Line:This is probably the worst bike you can buy. If you do buy this bike, I reccommend you put the 6" disc brakes From Hayes. They are fully Hydraulics and own a pair. They stop on a dime, you will never find better disc brakes.

Strengths:the frame is nice and beefy, it has a pretty great component spec for the price, farely light
Weaknesses:the formula brakes need to adjusted constantly to get good stopping power or you can jam on the levers all you want but you'll still keep going, the pads don't work that well get some after market pads

if you are into trials or hust jumping the rims will go
Similar Products Used:kona roast

Weaknesses:fork rebounding isn't perfect YET
ORYX sizings
Similar Products Used:LOTS
Bike Setup:STOCK
short titec stem, 25psi on Bomber
Bottom Line:A great all-around bike
Awesome ride, go with small companies cause they get the job done right. The parts suit the bike and the BRAKES are good and i haven't even broken them in yet. Don't mess with your brakes cause one mistake and your $%@^&%. The fork is ok but it sags and the rebounding isn't all that good. Maybe it will get good.
This thing is a rocket on trails.

Bottom Line:

Wow!! $1699 Canadian for a bike w/ duel disks, Judy XC's and a splatering of sweet components like Kore, Avid, & XTR rear der......
There has to be a trick...... Thats what i first thought....
Bought the bike early Jan. on impulse..... At first i wanted a Specialized or Giant or something, but most of those big name brands r made out in Taiwan...
THis baby is hand built in Canada by the guyz that bought Rocky mountain!
This bike rides soooooo sweeetttt...... at first the disks didn't work that great but that just took a few hours to wear in.....As if i could ask for more, the bike came w/ Time Aliums... i had 747's from my old Cannondale, (that the bastards didn't warranty plus left me on the limb for 4 months just to tell me NO) but all they did was catch mud.... plus if u guyz r tired of clipping out by accident on shimano crap get these pedals u won't regret it!...
I've even taken some huge bails on the bike... Paint job is still PERFECT and not a dent on my frame..(good thing this ain't a cracl'n'dale).....
Chek this bike out ..... Sweet ride , nice components, cheap price, & hand made in Canada!!! I must be dreamin'! its worth its wait in gold.....
