Favoriate Trail:Highland & Tambo
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Private Sale - Frame Only
Strengths:The frame is awsome!!!
Tuff, not to light, not to heavy!!
Geo is spot on for me!!
Weaknesses:Stock Shock is very average!!
Similar Products Used:GT DHi
Big Hit
Bike Setup:05 Boxxer rocking the front
5th element keeping the back on the ground
Hayes stopping me from hitting trees
Maxxis Minion F 2.7 on the front and a F 2.5 on the back.
Some Azonic, Sram and Race Face in the other spots and your cooking!!
Bottom Line:Still a great frame to build on!!!

Take out the stock shock and throw in a 5th element (i used a 9.5"i2i with 3" stroke, bigger than the stock 9"i2i, 2.7 stroke) and you have a rocket ship!!! Lets you set a little more sag so its great for the little stuff and ramps up really well for the big fun stuff!!!!

Smash it!! Bash it!! and you can still go riding tomorrow!!
And its white!!! what more do you need!!!

Favoriate Trail:Meadowbrook (Ted Williams)
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1250.00
Purchased At:Used
Strengths:Strong, Pretty low and fast, Just the right amount of travel
Weaknesses:Not as for different kinds of riding besides downhill. However, this is a downhill race bike, so it shouldn't matter.
Similar Products Used:First downhill bike
Bike Setup:Giant Dh Comp, Shiver, Rock Shox Pro Delux, Mavic 321's, Hope 4 pots, Maxxis rubber
Bottom Line:This bike is a great downhill rig that has spot on geometry for downhilling, strong enough to take freeriding, and enough travel for almost any rider. I have used this bike for everything from a cross country loop to downhill races. It's by no means a do it all bike, but if you are a downhiller who wants a good downhill bike, this can be used for other things. It is most at home on fast downhill courses with rocks, where the suspension really comes into its own. It also pedals surprisingly well. The geometry is my idea of a perfect downhill bike. It is a great value and perfect for any downhiller looking for a bike that works well in "socal courses" - pedally, sandy, and rocky. This being said, I personally am looking for a bike that is more catered to a freerider, who will occasionally go to a ski resort.

Bottom line - This bike does what its meant to and more.

Bottom Line:The bike is amazing! I am very happy with it. It's extremely stable in the air and on the ground. It corners excellent and it handles everything that I can throw at it. If you like downhill, then this is a great bike.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:camberra
Strengths:very good bike, handles all the drops with ease, ive got boxxers on it and it runs smoothly, very easy to throw around, best for the price, and good products on it.
Weaknesses:ummmmmm, nothing really, its pretty good, like of coarse there are some things u have to play around with, but still its pretty good, stronger rims
Similar Products Used:specialized BigHit, Kona stab, norco dh team
Bike Setup:this bike is good for people who race, but also is good for freeriders who are just out there to have fun, in the best way possible, like me
Bottom Line:one of the best bikes for the cost, can take the big drops, and really race ready out of the box, could do with better rims (stronger). but cant complain really

Submitted by Joe Mailhot a Downhiller from Auburn, Me. U.S.A.
Date Reviewed: June 25, 2002
Favoriate Trail:Sunday River, Me.
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $2200.00
Purchased At:Pedal Power in Auburn
Strengths:Excellent components for the price. Takes abuse well. Everything that I don't mention in the weaknesses. I like the wheelset and fork. The super T isn't a big heavy dh fork but the light weight and size, as well as the strong light wheel set is perfect for the technical, muddy, DH single track I ride.
Weaknesses:The linkage comes loose but locktite solves the problem so I am not complaining. The linkage under the BB scrapes on stuff like logs or concrete if you try to trials ride over someting. The bash rings hit the obstacle as well but the linkage is getting hit hard too. The front tire doesn't have enough clearance for that fork.
My bike came out of the box with the rear rock shox shok leaking all of its oil!! giant just gave me the number to rock shox. I had to call rock shox three times and talk to three people before getting a new one under warranty!!!
Rear der. hangers cost $23!!!! they should be free!
My race face BB shreded the small drive side bearings. Again, giant gave me race faces number and race face failed to send me my replacement in time for a DH race!! That sucks

Similar Products Used:Santa cruz bullit, kona stab primo, gt lobo, karpiel armagedon
Bike Setup:Maxxis 2.35 mofo---- my favorite tire ( 50 Du. casing )
I trimmed my bars, too wide for DH single track
stock
Bottom Line:The wheel set is light but tough, if you are breaking these wheels than you are going too big for most DH rigs and need an overbuilt hucker, or you have no finesse and should practice your style.
Switch tires, no clearance.
Awesome parts speck.
The fork and wheels give you a nimble bike. The suspension works and is good.
They need to fix the linkage bash problem.
I had enough warranty problems to leave a bad taste in my mouth. But for the money I paid, and the amount I ride this thing(every day) This is a real value.
Myles rockwell goes really fast on this frame so you know it is suitible for DH racing.
The bike gives more than I do on urban rides. It can also handle more than I can.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2950.00
Purchased At:westshore
Strengths:everything except the chainguide and stem.
Similar Products Used:rm7, atx 1, vps dh, ac1
Bike Setup:stock except got rid of the stem for a shorter one, swapped to shimano dx flats.
Bottom Line:I'm tired of hearing everyone rag on this bike. It pedals amazingly well and is easy to tune in. The rear must be reloctited when you purchase it. BIG DEAL. A three year old blind chimp could do that. It is burly and will last for years if taken care of properly and ridden with some FLOW!!!Swapping forks to monsters or next year's 32mm super t's would be an idea but otherwise this is the best bike for any money out there today. Add a 5th element and this thing would be unstopable.

Favoriate Trail:Tunnels,WOFTT,Cabels
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:can't tell u
Strengths:cheap, beefy headtube,ok rear hub, sucks up the bumps good, jumps great
Weaknesses:all linkage bolts need to be RED locktited Before u ride the bike("from a gaint mechanic"). The chain guide sucks big time,(the bolts catch on rocks & logs)it's held on by the bottom bracket & a frame tab(that will brake off). I cracked the top of the shock mount where it is welded to the frame. I bought a large & it came with a 600 spring(way to stiff). IT could use a floating rear brake.
Similar Products Used:GT DHI,craftworks,M1
Bike Setup:monster t, 321 rims, truvative cranks, xtr parts
Bottom Line:It took 9 months to brake the dhi & only 3 months brake this beefy frame. I have my doubts about this frame! But u can,t beat this bike for the price!

Favoriate Trail:rough and fast
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $3000.00
Purchased At:local shop
Strengths:have had my bike for a few months now and it is holding up really well.likage design is very good, even though itmay come lose soon after riding for the first few times the linkage bolts have protective screw in caps over them so they cant come out fully and be lost and cause the linkage to fall apart. The hayes brakes are awsome.
Weaknesses:brake cable routing needs slight modifying .The chain gude is a good design but needs to be held on with more bolts so when you hit a log or something it doesnt move.Like all bicycles that cop a heap of abuse you have to check all bolts every time you ride, use blue loctite like the warranty book says and torque the bolts up tight .DONT use glue! The tyres are insane to change, you HAVE to use tyre levers and talc. The outer chain guide material needs to be made of thicker aluminium.Seat is a bit too small, front forks need heavier springs for my weight 83kg.wheels could be wider
Similar Products Used:giant atx990,iron horse dh pro, heaps of crappy hardtails ,Santa cruz heckler, avanti competitor.
Bike Setup:odi lock on grips ,flat pedals, sdg seat, home made carbon fibtre mud / shock guard for the rear
Bottom Line:After having this bike for about 4 months now I cant complain at all . To all the linkage whingers out there try some maintenance before you ride!dont let more expensive bikes fool you ! this is just as good if not better than some of those high buck jobs . If you think you have to pay a certain amount to get a good bike then think again.

Submitted by Dave a Downhiller from Durango, CO
Date Reviewed: April 20, 2002
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Strengths:Nice forks and thats about it.
Weaknesses:Titus is crap, rear shock has blown out once and im just waiting for the next time it happens, frame has crappy bolts and threadwork. I sent the frame back to Giant and got a new one which has seemed to have not come loose. Lock Tide WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. Superglue might. Chainguide is hard to adjust, wheelset is crap, i dont care what pros ride singletracks, they are crap. Heavy for an 8.25 inch travel bike.
Similar Products Used:Foes The Fly, Kona stab primo, Yeti DH-6, Santa Cruz bullit. (Buy one of thoes, they are worth your time.)
Bottom Line:Don't waste your time. The bike retails for $3000 and it shows. Poorly thought through. Truly quality DH bikes are in upwards of $5000 if you want 8+ inches in back. Don't buy, however, if you are on a budget and dont mind wrenching every night on stupid stuff, go for it. It is cheap and will get you down the hill. Customer service was the only good thing about the experience, and now it's gone, I bought a Foes.

Strengths:This is a tough bike, good components, strong frame and rims, great tires.
Weaknesses:Linkage loosened up. Use RED locktite!
Similar Products Used:Giant AC, Kona Stinky
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:THis is my son's bike. He has ridden it hard and fast. He is into doing extreem freeride, downhill and drops. He has rode the Redbull Rampage course, the one in Virgin Utah, on this bike and it performed flawlessly. My son is very hard on bikes and components, yet this machine has held up perfectly, except for the linkiage loosening up at first. We got a torque wrench and some RED locktite and cured the problem. Nothing else has gone wrong. The suspension is awsome, plush and very progressive. The Marzocchi's are great up front and the tires are awsome, very sticky rubber. I give this bike the highest rating I can! I am very happy with it and so is my son.

Strengths:-awesome component spec
-low center of gravity allow for stable cornering
-slight rising rate...soaks up everything
-great pedaler
Weaknesses:-chainline a pain to adjust
-RS rear shock prone to failing
Similar Products Used:intense M1, SC Super8

Bottom Line:This an amazing product from Giant. you can't beat the value of this bike. its ready to race outta the box. word of caution tho, you need to take the pivot bolts out and reloctite them or else the suspension will develop slop. according to the rep, they allow the loctite to dry before screwing in the bolts, which negated the purpose of the loctite. do it before your first ride and you won't hafta worry about it again.

Submitted by Brush a Racer from Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Date Reviewed: March 4, 2002
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Hands down the best value for the money - Rides great - feels more like a nimble freeride bike then a DH race bike - which makes it handle and pedal like a dream. Suspension is super smooth and the component spec compliments the bike perfectly.
Weaknesses:None really - those into serious racing may want to beef up the fork - there is a great market for super T's to sell out there!
Similar Products Used:atx TEAM, atx two, ac1, intenses, yetis, DHIs, schwinns, rockys, name it!!!
Bike Setup:have ridden it both stock and now with white bros DH2's and azonic bar, stem, seat, pedals
Bottom Line:It is all about getting the most for YOUR money, you cant beat the DH comp for this - you get a race ready or freeride capable bike for a great deal. The frame is fantastic and must be ridden to be appreciated. The previous atx bike had been around so long and was so successful that you know Giant would come up with something big to replace it - and they did. Giant worked again with the Renault engineers who created the standout NRS XC bikes and the fruits of this relationship show once again. The bike just rides great, its super fun, and very easy to ride - you never feel as if your lumbering around on some akward beast of a bike. Race, play do whatever - and have some spare change when your done!

Weaknesses:chain line off when using low gears
Similar Products Used:yeti/schwinn staight 8, KHS DH 50, GT DHi, specialized DH
Bike Setup:currently stock with flat pedals
Bottom Line:out the box the giant DH comp is a straight up downhill race bike that easily competes with bikes in the $5000+ range. fairly light and quick for a long travel, single ring bike that is well suited to western downhill courses or any course that has a fair amount of pedaling sections. balanced front and rear travel with plenty of adjustment for any type of terrain. hayes, race face, sun-ringle, shimano LX/XT, marzocchi and titec components are all solid performing and reliable. great bike for any level downhill racer. for the urban assault/huckster into slow technical stunt riding i would reccomend switching out fork and rims to something like a monster T and sun double wides. also, not sure that chainguide could accomadate a smaller sized chainring. preferance items such as h-bars, grips, seat, pedals etc. might not fit every rider but can easily be swapped out. at $3000 msrp this bike can't be beat.
