from Layton UT, 84041 Date Reviewed: July 25, 2000 | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | Moderatre Performing RST Forks and rear-coil over shock, strong frame, nice selection of drive train components, Nice RST disc hubs that will help people who owns this bike avoid the hassles of upgrading to disc brakes! | | Weaknesses: | Old fashioned "Rear Triangle" swing arm, weak Sun Ditch Witch rims, non-reinforced headtube, skinny tires. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized Rockhopper FSR comp, Gary Fisher Joshua F3 | | Bike Setup: | Same parts that came on bike when bought, go to www.Ironhorsebikes.com for spec's. | | Bottom Line: | This bike is a decent inexpensive freerider for the weekend warrior. This model has a nice selection of drive train components as well as suspension. The Ginsu handled nicely at first, then after 10 drop-offs the Sun Ditch Witch rims started to bend, then I fell a few times since the skiny Maxxis tires that came on this freeride bike couldn't keep enough grip to keep me stable. I also did not like the old fashioned "Trek y-frame" type rear suspension. others bikes in the Ginsus price range have four bar linkage and inverted "L" swing arm suspension. I hope Iron Horse fixes that on next years Ginsu. The suspension may be low-key to you just because it has the name RST on it, actually the RST Gamma XT that comes on the Ginsu is pretty decent. It's a double crown design, with a 4-inch travel stroke, ajustable preload, and has TWIN AIR air damping, unlike the Manitou Magnum(not Magnum R) forks that you see on bikes in the same price range that doesn't even feature a damping system. The RST rear shock is good too, with a two inch suspension stroke and adjustable damping. The drive train was nothing special, but the average well functioning drivetrain system. One other thing that bugged me was that non-reinforced headtube by the way started cracking by the end of its 6th month. Now my bottom line.
Ideal Buyer- Novices who want to ride downhill and are on a tight budget. Also good for weekend warriors.
People who should stay away- Serious Downhillers/Freeriders!
