$650.00 | | Purchased At: | Bitar's in Hoquiam | | Strengths: | Great full suspension for the money. Just now after a year finding the limitations of the front shock. | | Weaknesses: | Low end Judy, stock pedals, and bend way over water bottle mount. | | Bike Setup: | Stock with aftermarket egeronomic seat. | | Bottom Line: | Reasonably priced full-suspension bike got me off the roads and into the single track. Will upgrade front shocks, pedals and seat a second time this winter. Very happy with my choice. If you broke the frame on this bike you were hucking on a bike that was not built for it. I crash at least six times a week and it never ceases to amaze me how well the bike has held up. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$500.00 | | Purchased At: | Cranford Bike Shop | | Strengths: | In it's price range ($500), nothing can touch it..in fact, nothing exists! Of course, I'm discounting sub-standard bikes that you can purchase at Kmart and Toys R Us. Look at the components on this thing...Deore for one. I was surprised that this bike weighed only 1.9 lbs. more than my previous bike (Giant Rincon SE, a hardtail), which I loved and reluctantly traded in for this one. | | Weaknesses: | I guess the front fork could use a little bit more travel and stiffness to match the almost-bottomless rear suspension. Tires excel in hardpack/gravel/mud but are loud and rought for street, but what do you expect? | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale Raven (wow, but a BIT too pricey for me), GT I-Drive 6.0 (at least $100 more). | | Bike Setup: | Stock. Added Zephyr bell and pump, Cateye headlight, RhodeGear pack w/spare tube. | | Bottom Line: | The best value in an entry-level full-suspension bike. Will go down stairs, tight steep rocky singletrack, just about anything. Ascends beautifully, thanks to FS and Tyrannoraptors. Kudos to Giant! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$750.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Look, price, components (for the price),ride quality. | | Weaknesses: | The seat (at the risk of sounding conservative I admit that my sexsual tendencies are more traditional than what Giant had in mind for me when they put that nutcracker on the bike), water bottle location, a bit too squeeky. | | Similar Products Used: | Rockhopper FSR, DB Topanga hardtail. | | Bike Setup: | Factory + clipless + Serfas Rx saddle | | Bottom Line: | This is the cheapest FS bike I could get in Israel (other than some no-name bike). I got it originally in order to have some family outing and maybe a bit of exercise. I ended up liking it so much that I often do freeride and a daily ride is a must nowdays... The bike just let you do way more than I expected - so I just follow the chalanges. It is a great entry level bike that I will not outgrow too fast. The bike is very stable and bailed me out few times from a sure visit to the local clinic. Off course I want better components but as long as they don't come free I'll keep these until they break and then we'll see. The last sentence is what make me give it 5 flaming turds... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1500.00 | | Purchased At: | Outdoor Accents | | Strengths: | Snappy frame when climbing, durable components. | | Weaknesses: | RS Jett, Front Derailleur cable routing, bottom bracket | | Similar Products Used: | Too many to list. (See my first review - the very first one at the bottom)
| | Bike Setup: | Not a thing on this bike is stock. Warranty replaced frame with DS-1 frame when I crushed the down tube. 2000 Marzocchi Z-2 Atom-80; Full Grimeca System 8 Discs; XT shifters, cassette, and rear derailleur; axiom seat post, stem and handlebar; Magura Louise disc hubs laced to Sun-Rims DS2-XC; XT BB; Race Face Prodigy cranks; Michelin WildGripper tires. (These are the reasons I paid more than $650 USD) | | Bottom Line: | I demolished this frame early on in 2000. Warranty replaced the frame with the DS-1 and I raced that XC all year. With a Z-3 up front the bike was all right, but is seemed stiff and rubbery (I thought it was the frame). Now that I put the new Z-2 on it feels like a new bike. Of course upgrading every part on the bike to XT and hydraulic disc could have helped. Since then the bike responds quickly when climbing, and descends like mad. The only bone I have to pick is about the routing of the cable for the front derailleur. As it comes in from the top on the 2000 model, the cable housing tends to squeak whenever dirt gets in there and the rear suspendion kicks in. I saw that they fixed this problem for the 2001 bikes so no worry there. Word from the wise: This bike feels good now, but save yourself time and money and buy a full suspension already tweaked out with such components (ie. KHS FXT Pro) and save some cash.
For the weekend warrior or a thrasher starting out this bike would be more than ideal. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The 2000 Judy XC does the job wonderfully. I changed the travel to a 100mm, since it comes out of the box at 83mm. I also changed the oil for a 15w motorcycle suspension oil (I weight 240 pounds). What a difference. I can drop from higher and take longer and faster stairs. For the dropping part, there is now a 2001 RaceFace Turbine LP cranks under my feets, with RF rings. With a Shimano XT BB. I also have now bigger, fatter pedals. | | Bottom Line: | There is a lot of snow up here and thought I could store my bike for the winter, because of calcium you know... Yeah right... I've been riding most part of the winter. The bike sometimes act strangely, because of cable shortening in the cold but the frame has not broke since so long, I must say i'm impressed. I don't agree, my frame is very strong and have not had a problem with it. | | Weaknesses: | I didn't care much for the original componets. Rim was ok but the fork is now in 2 pieces. | | Similar Products Used: | Baracudda A2Fast, 98' Schwinn Mesa GSX | | Bike Setup: | Race Face handle bars, Titec bar ends, Control Tech Stem, Race Face headset, Marzocchi z-2 Atom 80 front shock, mavic rims, original tires, LX front derailer and an XT rear, Race Face crank, XTR 8 speed cassette | | Bottom Line: | Every time I rode it something went wrong and had to end up walking the bike back up the hill, Well not any more with the new componets. I even lost 2 front teeth because of the weak front fork, I guess I'm not the average bike rider, I'm a little bit rougher on them I suppose. Pretty much all I need now is a new frame and I will have a pretty kick ass bike, heck when I bought my front fork I didn't even realize I was paying almost about what I originally paid for the bike. Stock Saddle | | Similar Products Used: | Tested GT I-drive's, Giant XTC's , several low-end DS bikes | | Bike Setup: | Stock Except for Selle Royal Forma Gel saddle and Wellgo Clipless Pedals | | Bottom Line: | This is an excellent Dual Suspension for anyone starting out. It comes with good Shimano componentry for the price (acera & deore) and a decent Rock Shox fork. The Rear shock is the only one at this price range that I have ever seen with a damping rate adjustment. The bike has performed well for me and I have not had any problem with the bike or any of the components. However, I am not into extreme mountain biking or down hilling, so the bike might not hold up as well under those conditions. Also the weight is a bit high at around 30+ lbs. I think the extra weight for the Dual Suspension is worth it. If you have the extra cash get one of the Giant XTC DS models, then you can have every thing, a lightweight dual suspension that doesn't bob and the energy transfer of a hard tail. Over all I feel this is a Great Bike and I would not hesitate to buy it again. Anyone who is looking to get into Mountain Biking and needs a trail worthy starter bike without a $1000+ price tag should take a look at this Bike!! It only gets 4 flamin' chilies due to the weight. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
