Description: As impossible as it seems, this bike just keeps getting better.
In 2003, the almighty M-1 is being fitted with the new 5th Element suspension system or Romic Twin Tube system, a mind-blowing suspension set-up so completely radical it prompted a redesign of the M-1 monocoque just to accommodate it.
Consider, for a second, the significance of the world's most brilliantly engineered downhill racing bike bowing to a suspension system.
Incredible.
By combining the two in one bike design, Intense not only moved the benchmark ridiculously high, they inadvertently kicked the competition in the teeth on the way up.
-First fully adjustable downhill frame, head angle, bottom bracket, wheelbase, disc brake mounts, and suspension leverage ratios are adjustable.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:This frameset is amazing! Shorten up the wheelbase and its like a bmx race bike! sweet in the turns and great in the air.
Weaknesses:Seat angle is retarded.
You have to ride with the seat way high, and if you don't the rear wheel is going to take it off!
I ran a Race Face XY post backwards just to be able to lower the seat enough for my preferences.

Bottom Line:If you want a DH bike, and you are tall and don't mind having your seat in you azz while you are rippni' get it!

if you are 5'10" get the small size frame, the medium will beat your balls!

Date Reviewed: April 5, 2006
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $2100.00
Purchased At:Frame only
Strengths:-Excellent geomerty for intended use
-Superb suspension action
-Adjustability for varied terrain
Weaknesses:-High maintenance, race specific frame
-Low BB means pedals get smacked often
-Monocoque frame is noisy
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Super 8
GT DHi
Bike Setup:Shimano Saint throughout w/ factory works Marzocchi Super T
Bottom Line:The Intense M1 is arguably the best DH race bike ever made and will be loved by experienced racers looking to win. It was not intended for freerding or just tooling around the mountain. The bottom bracket is low, which allows the bike to corner like it's on rails but also means the pedals get snagged easily when you try to pedal through rocky sections. The M1 also requires constant care with it's many pivot points. I would recommend the Intense M1 for riders who enjoy racing and don't mind tinkering with their bikes. If you're looking for a fun shuttle bike or freerider, look somewhere else.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:This is a great bike. The frame is very strong and I have taken it on some pretty punishing trails. You can do almost anything on this bike.
Weaknesses:The only problem i've had with it is that it does not have a mount for a disc in the back.

Handle Bars: Monkey Lite DH
Headset: Chris King

Wheels: Mavic Deemax
Frame: duh...M1...yellow!
Bottom Line:This is by far the best bike I have ever ridden. Mine was a good value, but I've had to put about $1,000 into it so I could have it my way. I highly reccomend this bike to anyone who wants a PERFECT downhill bike. It may set you back alot of money, but it's worth it!!

Strengths:All can be custom tailored for your ride, angles, supension, wheel base...
Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:Kona Stab Primo

Bottom Line:Anyone who writes stuff like ripping off a head tube of destroying any part of this bike is lying... We are a couple of firends with the same bike set-up for the last couple of years and we never broke anything off! I do some pretty sick stuff with the bike and occasinnally something will break, but anything breaks when you hit a rock straight on @ 80 clicks after a 10 feet drop off !!! Be serious, this is the top!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:great frame
Weaknesses:support, I bought the frame from a guy on mtbr and the b/b was messed up. I sent it to intense and the are replacing the frame (at a cost). It has been about 2 or more months months now and I have been told for the last two weeks "oh, that should be here tomorrow". They tell me "I'll call you tomorrow" and never do.
Intense has the worst customer sevice standards of any company that I have dealt with in any industry. I will never buy an intense product again
Similar Products Used:specialized big hit
Bottom Line:never buy an intense bike... they used to be the best bike out there, but other bike companys technology has come so far that intense is no longer the badest on the hill.
With their lack of customer service, I would definately buy a different companys product.

Strengths:-Suppleness
-Strength
-Accurate
-Pedalling friendly
Weaknesses:-Manitou shock option that came w/mine
-WARRANTY COVER AND POST SALE ASSISTANCE: PEOPLE AT INTENSE DO NOT CARE ABOUT GIVING A QUICK RESPONSE TO YOUR NEEDS. WHILE RACING THEY TOOK AS LONG AS 4 WEEKS TO RETURN A REPAIRED SWINGARM
Similar Products Used:GT STS DH, GT Lobos DH, Schwinn Straight 8.
Bike Setup:Boxxer, XTR, Hope and Azonic parts.
Bottom Line:If you are a serious racer don't buy this bike because if you have a problem with the frame or any part that needs manufacturer assistance they are not willing to help you!!! Everything is pink to buy but then to assist it is probably one of the worst manufactures. I broke a GT rear swingarm and in 5 days I had a new replacement. With intense one month has passed and nothing. DO NOT BUY. BEING THE BEST IS NOT ONLY HAVING A GOOD FRAME IS MUCH MORE !!!

Purchased At:Free To ME
Strengths:Great Durability, Rails through turns. Very Stable tracks well through rock gardens and pretty well anything.
Weaknesses:No replaceable hanger on mine. Hasnt been a problem so far but its a matter of when not if.
Similar Products Used:Turner DHR, Yeti DH9, Specialized S-works DH
Bike Setup:Race face NS cranks, MArzochi Shiver, Hayes, ultegra cassetts, MRP Kovachi Wheels
Bottom Line:Great Bike with a good ride but I like the ride of the turner much better. The turner just seems to instill more confidence. Only beef with the parts is with the wheels. Kovachi is an a-hole when it comes to his customer service. The kovachi hubs need constant attention and on one of the rims the welds tore.

p.s. whats with the BS reviews. who the hell puts a rigid fork on a DH bike and the guy talking about ripping the head tube off is full of sh!t A guy on the team did a 15 foot drop onto flat concrete and the rear wheal was all that blew up no other problems on the entire bike.

Strengths:I hear it's a pretty good design. I've demo'd it before, and it did deliver perfect performance. It does have replaceable rear derailleur hanger now.
Weaknesses:none.
The guy in the review BELOW, aside from being the kind of JERK that screws around with MTBReview ratings, must be insane! He's totally out of line for putting really bad language in an information site like this!
Bottom Line:I like the M1. Although I do not own one, I've ridden it for the better part of a week.
Jeff Steber, of Intense Cycles, makes a quality bike!

** I really get pissed that illiterate, juvenile punks get on the review boards and screw them up!

The M1 is as good a downhill bike as you can get!

I'm rating everything as 5 chiles, just to try to support a good company, run by a good man, who makes great bikes!
Go Intense!!!

Bottom Line:The suspension can be confusing when doing back-hops, but you get used to it. For comps I put a piece of wood where the shock is, to make it "more responsive" - killer. Don't use tyres bigger than 1.5", its just not done...

Strengths:Bomb Proof, Super Stiff, Killer angels, Very plush!
Weaknesses:None that I have noticed.
Similar Products Used:I raced last year on a Specalized Big Hit. This year I decied that I wanted a bike that would let me win!

Profile Cranks and BB (good for guys that bust)
Answer protaper bar
Hayes 8" front and Rear
Bottom Line:This bike is the nicest DH race bike on the market. I know that I will be a better rider. I didn't like how my other bike's would flex in the turns. This bike is super stiff. I think it is important for me to give props to Beyondbikes. This shop is the first one that actually had a clue! I have tried to deal with some other mailorder companies but I got tired of XC race guys trying to give me DH advice. Their prices were great as well. I got the shiver fork on close out for $850. Bottom line: This bike kicks ass! I will write another review at the end of the season and let everyone know how she holds up!

Strengths:-great geometry, slack for stability at speed
-lightweight, but not stupid-light
-tracks well, rear end is stiff with the 12mm TA
-controlled suspension, the 5th element is a godsend
-pedals like a hardtail
Weaknesses:-monocoque, makes some popping noises
-low BB, chainguide bashes rocks lots

Bottom Line:i have the 2002 M1 but it is identical to the 2003, except for decals. It was my downhill race bike this past season. It's hard to describe how awesome this bike rides. It feels plush on the big hits, but quiet while pedaling. Very stable at speed, drops with ease. it just wants to go fast. nice and slack...just dive into rock gardens at speed and hold on. very flickable, turns like its on rails. if you get this bike and aren't getting top 10 finishes, its the rider, not you. despite its popularity, IMO, there aren't many frames out there that surpass its performance
