from la,la,la California Date Reviewed: October 16, 2007 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Strengths: | U-turn adjustment works great ascending and descending. | | Weaknesses: | The left Cam-lever on the axle retainer broke on me while I was bunny hopped 2 inches off the ground for my friends on the street! What if I was going down the trail really fast? That would have been a nice law suit for Rock Shox. Not to mention the cost of the cam lever kit because they won't just sell the lever itself was $50.00 for a fork that was obsolete. | | Similar Products Used: | Marzocchi Drop-Off, Marzocchi Dirt-Jumper. Forget the external adjustments, at least these guys lasted on me. | | Bike Setup: | Ironhorse SGS sport with a few mod upgrades here and there. | | Bottom Line: | Why would you purchase a fork that's supposedly quasi freestyle/XC? It's also weird to see a 20mm thru axle fork that has a XC sticker slapped on it. I think this fork is confused about it's personality. Not to mention the bikes that come with it advertise their bikes as beginner freeride but with a chintzy fork like this. Overall features are cool but I was really dissapointed when the lever broke on me and I had to scourge several LBS just to find out they had to special order the whole lever kit because they don't just sell the lever itself. I hope Rock Shox reads my review and get back to me.
Regardless, although I would be skeptical it still would not stop me to purchase Rock Shox forks in the future, jsut not the Psylo or any fork they advertise as freeride/trail and then slap an XC sticker on it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Flexy Stantions | | Similar Products Used: | Old school Judy, RS Stuff | | Bike Setup: | '01 Enduro 20mm Psylo | | Bottom Line: | These shocks are a bit of a pain! You can work and work on them and they still won't work! I have replace the damping unit numerous times, 3 time via warrenty, now RS won't cover it, they say I should be using a newer, "Beefier" model. People say they are stripping the rebound knob, it's because the unit won't adjust any more! It's bits of dampener jamming the system. The thing implodes on it's self. The bushings are okay still, but the stantions flex back like crazy when you put on the front brake. If you want a good XC fork, this is for you, If you do any fast all Mountain ridin', get something else. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I brought it back to my shop and it's been sent to Rock Shox for warranty. That was over a month ago. Tried finding out what was going on and nobody could answer me and there is no way to contact RS's warranty dept (in Canada the # on my warranty and online is always busy/ does not work) and Cycles Lamberts (distributor) never answered my email so I'm in the dark. Last week went back to my LBS and they finally got some news, RS sent the fork to the wrong store and wanted to charge me for the bushing replacement, so who knows when I'll be riding again and how much this will cost. This is very annoying and expensive, if I would have known I'd of had it fixed in town. Just get yourself a nice Marzocchi or Manitou, much better forks, better built and there service is amazing, Rock Shox feel like a 400$ slap in the face. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Lightweight is good if you do a lot of riding back up the hill. | | Weaknesses: | Crowns are loose and creak whenever I pull on the front brakes. Adimttedly, I have ridden the forks pretty hard, but they should be able to stand up to more abuse than I give them (I'm only 60kg, and I don't go all that big). Also, the ability too adjust travel seemed like a nice idea when I bought them, but I just set it to 125mm and left it. Overall a pretty good, strong fork. Not sure about the reviewers complaining about the flex. I don't have an issue with flex, but mine is one of the models with the 20mm thru axle. The only time I got any bothersome flex was in a ramp stunt park which is to be expected. Works fine for XC and moderate freeriding. Too bad the rebound adjuster stripped out after only a few months. Last april, I decided that the psyloes weren't going to cut it, and bit the bullet and got myself a 2002 Z1 FR. Wow, so this is what I have missed. The Z1 is so sick! It is super plush in the first four inches. It's definitely unlike the Psyloes I had that only moved in the first three inches, then blew through its travel on the slightest drop. There is no stiction, and it's still as smooth as the day i got it. I had some help from some great guys here in SC, that's why I can afford it. Other wise, check out Z1 Drop Offs and Z1 wedge before you buy a psylo xc.The Hydracoil in the psyloes felt nothing like the Hydracoil in my old boxxer. So don't get fooled by Rock Shox ads. | | Bottom Line: | Bottom line:The 15 mm upper bushing is a design flaw thanks to Rock Shox inadequate R&D and testing. It cost a fortune and valuable riding time to send it to Singapore for servicing/ bushign replacement. Rock Shox told me that the 02 upper bushing (30mm) cannot be retrofitted into the 01 model but I have heard people saying otherwise. Can somebody clarifies? Replacing the bushing yourself is out of the question since the cost of the installation and removal kit are very expensive. You are better off buying a new pair of lower with new bushign installed or buying another fork (but not Rock Shox). I am definitely ditching my Psylo for Fox Fork.

Seals leaked after about 6 months. Rebound knob (cheapo plastic) stripped almost immediately.

Bottom rebound control plastic thingy P.o.s. stripped. Kinda heavy. | | Similar Products Used: | RS Judy C, RS Psylo SL, Marzocchi Marathon, Marzocchi FR Z1 | | Bike Setup: | 1998 Trek 6500 - built up to 8500 specs. | | Bottom Line: | Was excellent upgrade at first from the Judy that came with it. A lot stiffer. Loved the adjustable travel. A lot plusher than the Judy. Bottomed out from the get go with med. springs that came with (I weigh 180 & don't do 4' drops or anything). So I upgraded to the adjustable travel kit and put the heavier spring in. This stopped it from bottoming - but after 6 months - the bushings started leaking and it now tops out & clanks when it does it. Also the rebound knob on the bottom stripped 3 months into it. I'll be buying a FS rig soon and will definitely go with the Marzocchi Marathon or Z1 FR. Marzocchi is incredibly plush compared to Psylo. High value when upgrading from a Judy - but low value due to durability & lack of middle ground on springs. So I'm giving it a middle road rating. Buy it if you have a Judy & are looking for a cheap upgrade & you have limited funds. Don't buy it if you have a couple hundred extra bucks and want something that will last a while. Not a good investment over the long run. Would make a good thrashing/backup/extra fork. Good luck getting a spring that either doesn't bottom or doesn't top out.

The biggest thing I noticed was that it changed the geometry of my bike and made it much better going down steeps or landing jumps or drops. I love it. Changing the travel isn't that big of a hassle if you have the right stuff, the only problem is I usually need a flashlight to make sure the scredriver is engaged. The biggest thing I can say about it is that I don't think about it much, I'm just having a lot of fun riding. | | Weaknesses: | The adjustable travel didn't work upon installation, and although Supergo has super prices, they basically lied to me about contacting Rock Shox to get it fixed. Btw, what is Hydracoil?!?!?!?! I then learned that I could by a new spring for a great price at the Garda lake in Italy at the Bike-Festival. This did indeed help some, but was never a perfect solution. The last straw was 2 weeks ago, where the oil cartridge on the right lost it's function. Over a small bump the little adjuster knob flew out of it's holding. After putting it back in, while doing so getting my hands a greasy in the middle of a street downtown. I then continued where upon the little knob was shot out with all the oil coming rushing out in one fantastic experience. $100.00 | | Purchased At: | mtb tester garage sale | | Strengths: | seems faily stiff, great small bumb sensitivity "as long as you change the oil every couple months", good control over the big hits. | | Weaknesses: | high mantenence, feel a little bit of slack on the nylon bushings when I hold the front brake and push the bike back and forth, when I fist installed this fork I was a little worried do to them bottoming out with a bunny hope to front wheel landing but that went away after the fork was broken in. | | Bike Setup: | mountain cycle san andreas, xt/xtr componets, sun ryno lite rims with tiogo 2.3s | | Bottom Line: | The strengths out weight the weakneses. If you can find a good deal on this fork go for it. "unless your into slow speed drops to flat landings. This fork is great... For you who have a problem with the fork bottoming out try a heavyer weight oil and a little more then they recomend in the damping side. All though you will feel it over the bumpy sections it will stiffen the fork up. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$189.00 | | Purchased At: | supergo | | Strengths: | 5 inches of travel, silver | | Weaknesses: | Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to soft for freeriding, not when you first get it but after a few months its as easy to bottom out as it is to disgust a nun, its almost to soft for cross country as well,on a good week I only bottom this out 20 times on an average around 50 times, when I first got this fork I was excited now not that much, its still a great fork but it is waaaaaaaaaaaaay to soft. | | Similar Products Used: | None with more than 2 inches | | Bike Setup: | black hardtail silver psylo un breakable sun rims, except for the front rim because it has to deal with the super soft fork | | Bottom Line: | Its an okay fork for a while then it gets super soft, never run at less than five inches of travel, buy a marazzochi. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$300.00 | | Strengths: | Cheap, Stiff | | Weaknesses: | Stiff spring rate, Expensive parts, Poor lubrication, Bad bushings | | Similar Products Used: | Z1,2,3,5; Boxxer,Judy,Jett,Indy,SID; Black,Mars,X-Vert,SX; Suntours | | Bike Setup: | Rocky Mountain/Race Face/XT | | Bottom Line: | I can only hope it's improved, I have one of the first few into Ontario. I was initially quite impressed with the stiffness for it's weight but found the spring rate too stiff from day one for my 160lbs and the replacements are too costly to be worthwhile to |
