from washington Date Reviewed: June 29, 2006 | | Favoriate Trail: | dirt jumps | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Purchased At: | givin to me from friend | | Strengths: | I do mostly dirt jumping and urban assault with a few drops and the psylo works very well. Its got lots of adjustability-rebound, climb-it control(compression), u-turn travel adjust, and lockout. These are really fun to play with and actually make a difference in ride quality. The fork is really smooth and quiet and it doesnt make any thuds or squeaks, even when it bottoms out. | | Weaknesses: | The psylo is in desperate need of preload adjustment to stiffen the suspension or it needs stiffer aprings. I only weigh 105 lbs but it is still easy to bottom out the fork on small jumps or drops. The rebound adjuster is impossible to turn with hands(do I need a special tool?). | | Similar Products Used: | just looked at and compressed other forks at the shop | | Bike Setup: | 2000 Specialized BigHit, Shimano, Sun Rims, Maxxis tires | | Bottom Line: | its a really smooth fork with lots of adjustments and great looks. I would reccommend this fork to aggressive trail riders and for light freeride and dirtjumping, but you will probably need stiffer springs if you are heavy or go really big on jumps or drops. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$300.00 | | Strengths: | It worked for a few months... | | Weaknesses: | till the internals fell apart and Rock Shox took months to get it back to me. | | Similar Products Used: | my first suspention fork, came on my brodie | | Bike Setup: | Brodie, hayes, Marzocchi | | Bottom Line: | I got my Brodie bike, was very happy with everything for the first month or so. Then out of nowhere the internals started to creak and act up. I sent it back and something inside was broken and they were cool enough to say it was a manufacturing defect so it only cost me shipping. The major downside is that it took for ever for me to get it back, so meanwhile I got a Marzocchi z2 and its just so much better that the psylo went on my beater ride. I have had no problems with it since but the most action it sees now is to get to school. It is a nice fork but Rock Shox slow turnaround makes it NOT worth it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The steerer didn't pull out of the fork, it just would move, and other than that it was functionally sound. I fixed it by drilling a hole through the steerer & crown, and running a small bolt though the steerer. Since the bolt only stops the steerer from twisting, it has held up just fine. I just wanted to let anyone know how to fix this problem if it ever occurs to anyone else. I like the fork otherwise, and it has performed very well. I got mine cheap to replace a 2002 Psylo XC that failed. The SL is a good fork, but there are better forks(marzocchi) availible for the same retail price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Seems a little flexy when pushed in hard terrain.(Although this might be a little more evident because of the bushings) | | Similar Products Used: | Marzocchi, Judy,Manitou | | Bike Setup: | 2001 GT i-Drive 2.0. stock | | Bottom Line: | This fork has potential to be a very decent fork. The first thing i would recommend is making sure you get the right springs for your weight put inside the fork. The fork came stock with the light springs. I'm about 200lbs. and just bunnyhopping and pushing down on the front of the fork i was able to bottom it out. It amazes me that a veteran company, also the very first company to start manufacuring forks can't seem to get it right. I mean a bushing problem. C'mon man it seems like they don't even give these forks any sufficent R&D time or proper testing. Rockshox has it's light cross country forks and then they have their freeride and downhill forks. C'mon guys you have to make stuff that's gonna hold up to the abuse the fork is intended for. No wonder they went out of business. Now maybe SRAM can pick up the pieces and start making some reliable forks.

I wouldn't really need the u-turn feature anyway because I never change my travel. I'd rather flip my stem negative rise for better climbing, and still have my preload adjuster [the '02 u-turns don't have preload control]. This is because the bushings were loose. Every ride a few months after the purchase the bushings became very loose, and the fork would shudder under hard braking. I sent the fork back to the RockShox distributor for Canada [Cycle Lambert] and they warrantied the fork for me. They gave me a new crown, new stanchions, new seals, new bushings, new oil and new dampers. Basically half a new fork. The only downside is that it had a 1.5 month turnaround time, I was aching to ride again!
But I suppose it was worth it. The fork is much more solid and is still very smooth in it's travel stroke. Fore-aft flexing is gone, if not very minimal. I give two thumbs up to this fork and five stars now that I have all new internals + crown and stanchions!
People who should look into this fork are riders with freeride type of styles or even aggressive xc. I have my raceface stem flipped negative rise and it works absolutely perfect with the lock-out on this fork during long climbs. A definite recommendation. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Slight play in stanchions | | Similar Products Used: | Mag 10, Zokes | | Bottom Line: | I bought my 2001's new but didnt set them up until a few months ago. I bought the retro kit which allows external travel adjustment like the 2002. Admittedly I havent had a lot of time with them but they seem really strong. I weigh 250 and trash stuff just by looking at it. I have a couple hundred Km's on them and they are fine. They do have slight play in the stanchions out of the box. This play gets worse the more travel you dial in but it doesnt affect the travel of the fork or the ride at all. The lock out on mine works but it is possible for me to compress the fork while the lockout is on by putting some moderate pressure on the fork. Im a big guy though so this doesnt surprise me. My Z1's are a much more plush and active fork but not designed for x country. I really like these forks. It came on my Bullit as an OEM piece. It's got a compression lockout that works, but I never use it. I ride about 3 times a week and I bomb the downhills pretty good, using every bit of the 5 inch travel. I've punished this fork for 7+ months and have had none of the problems that others seemed to have had.
I did have one problem with it but I'm going to have to blame the LBS. I weighed 220 lbs when I got the Bullit but the standard spring in the fork is only rated for riders up to 180 lbs. To set the proper sag the LBS cranked up the preload. The spring lasted about 2 months before breaking. The LBS replaced the spring for one that fits my weight and the fork's been fine ever since. If they had just done that in the first place (they did put the proper spring on the rear shock) I would not have had the problem.
I ride hard and I don't really spend the time maintaining my bike like I should but the Psylo works awesome. I would definately buy another one of these.

I've ridden for about a total of 5 hours on it (I know, not alot) and it seems to be a high preformer from RS. I took out in the pouring rain for a ride, ran it through the mud, the guck, a creek, and beat it around. and it still felt smoothe, and the seals kept the crap out. so far, so good :o)

$350.00 | | Bottom Line: | this is a follow up on an earlier review. the folks in holland repaired my rs psylo. the pure damper doesn't loose any oil anymore but there is still alot of bushing play, now i'm waiting for the new 2002 bushings which are way longer so bushingplay will be over soon. i do like the fork cause when you're riding along on your favourite trail you'll not notice the play. it works perfectly. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
