Date Reviewed: February 15, 2006 | | Favoriate Trail: | santos baby!! | | Duration Product Used: | 2 Years | | Purchased At: | wheels of wellington | | Strengths: | every thing this bike will blow u away i promise u will be shocked at what it can take belive me i have tried to break it.also very well priced and a good standing warrenty behind it all!! | | Weaknesses: | nothing fisher has done it agin perfect bike!! | | Similar Products Used: | gary fisher marlin,cake,trek 3900(don't ask),and scott progrssive(never buy one of these bikes their crap and scott's warrenty sucks the big one) | | Bike Setup: | xo this and xo that race face blah blah blah u know the deal | | Bottom Line: | this is the best bike i have ever riddin in my whole life. i have done every thing from xc racing to 10 foot drops on this beast and still nothing is broken, but thats not from lack of trying. at 27 pounds this bikes not the lightest but still who cares beacuase it dosn't beat u up so much ur less tired at the end of the ride than ur buddy on his 'light' fuel. now when i ride i ride hard and this is one of the few bikes that i can say will take it, also incase ur wondering i am not even talking about a dlx modle. anyhow this bike has been everywhere with me i would never leave the house without it its a very 'forgiving' as far as the suspention goes. but don't get confused i have been using the stock spv shock for 2 years now it it still work perfect very responsive and still efficient. this bike is a must if u want a bike that is fast, forgiving, and can take a hit and keep on roling.Ultra comfy thanks to gary's genisis geometry

Minimal graphics. | | Weaknesses: | Seat comfort, odd component spec, pricing. | | Similar Products Used: | Giant AC-1, Trek Liquid | | Bike Setup: | A rather odd duck at this demo, this one had a component mix that WON'T at dealers - This was supposed to represent a Cake 1DXL but was actually lower spec frame with carbon seatstays and disc brakes (disk models have AL stays) - This bike also had the tubeless rims/tires that won't be available on the Cake 1DXL. The bike I rode had XTR (STI) shifter brake controls, the XT hydros, Manitou Minute fork (130mm travel) Manitou Swinger 3-way shock, Bontrager wheels, XT crank and ders. SRAM cassette. | | Bottom Line: | Very pleased the bike didn't have "Cake" deals all over it, as I think the name is stupid. Aesthetics aside, the bike performed much better than I expected. The SPV fork and shock work great together and soaked up all I could find to throw at it. I rode some really sketchy lines through rock gardens and the Cake made them feel easy. The bike remains responsive to out of the saddle climbs and it's easy to preload the suspension for bunny hopping and technical moves. The XT Hydro brakes were standouts as well. They were easy to modulate and provided strong, predictable stopping power.
The seat's got to go! It's a Titec Ithys that just never felt right to me - too wide, oddly shaped and, pretty ugly too boot. The components were rounded out with the usual assortment of Bontrager Race light stuff.
All in all the component mix seemed odd XT cranks were fine, but I would have really preferred the XTR derailiuer to match the STI shifters. The shifting was backward from other STI/XTR bikes I've ridden. The presence of lightweight rimsm stem, and carbon seatpost seemed out of place on a 5" trailbike. It seems the component spec was compromised to meet weight(26lbs) and pricing targets.
With a 3300 MSRP, I'd say the Cake is a bit overpriced with this component mix. Up the ante to XTR, stick with a Shimano cassette, spec a better seat and deliver the bike without pedals at the same price, and they'd have a winner.
If you ride rocky, rooty trails, and want a bike that pedals much like a heavy-ish XC bike, but soaks up obstacles with 5" of travel front and rear, then this bike certainly fits the bill. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
