Description:The new 4 piston Downhill brake by Hope Technology is the most revolutionary braking system ever made. The DH4 uses a totally open system that provides drag free, self adjusting performance. This brake provides more power than any other brake out there, yet offers superior modulation.

Strengths:Very Powerful, very progressive, reosonably light and looks great !
Weaknesses:The biting point is a little later than I would like, because its an open system the adjustability is limited.
Similar Products Used:Grimeca stuff, Hayes, Magura, V-Brakes
Bike Setup:Dirt Jumping Freeride bike, Z1 Freerides, built for strength.
Bottom Line:Very Good All round brake well worth the extra money, suits lots of styles of riding, another great product from a great company !

Strengths:Good stopping power
Weaknesses:The best got better...
Need to bleed after heavy riding
Similar Products Used:RockShox Disc
Bottom Line:If you're using these discs and are having trouble bleeding them, get the bleed kit off hope as it's a lot better (although pretty expensive).

Also if you want to improve performance (less pump up & less bleeding to do) then switch to DOT 5.1, I did this summer in Morzine and noticed my brakes worked a lot better than last year with DOT 4.

Strengths:They are British, they are manufactureed to excelent standards. They stop you with one finger!!! And have stopped being made as single crown fork users were using them only to find that they are so powerful they bent the forks!!!
Weaknesses:Non!!! Just only for Downhill bikes and forks.
Similar Products Used:Haynes
Bike Setup:Karpiel Armageddon, Profile cranks, atomlab trail pimp rims Hope bigun hubs etc
Bottom Line:These disks rule....Period, There isn't a brake out there yet that can stop a 50lb Downhill bike as fast as these and offer as much feel and confidence. I used to live 200yards from the Hope factory over here in the UK. I had a BIG crash one day, totally recked my Big'un hub and damaged the pipe leading into the caliper. I went to see Hope to buy some parts to fix the damage as everything was out of waranty apart from my DH4. Hope wouldn't sell me anything!!, they replaced everything free of charge. How good is that for customer service. Steve Peat was furious to know that GT wouldn't let him run Hope last year. This year he's on Hope, Say no more. British at it's best, brin it on.....

Strengths:Craftmanship, performance, weight, ease to use
Weaknesses:Oil changes and bleeding the system. This is a tedious process and to do it well takes two people if you do it as the manual describes. I'm open to suggestions for a better way.
Similar Products Used:Avid mechanical disc. I've ridden others but have not owned them.
Bike Setup:Haro Werks DHR, Stratos S7, Hadley, rhyno's
Bottom Line:I painstakenly debated spending the money on these brakes. No one in my area uses Hope so I had to go by what I read in this forum. Thanks. I must say these brakes perform like nothing I've used so far. One finger is all you need for all the breaking power you can handle. Keep your hands on the bars, not the brakes on those hammering descents. For those of you out there considering what to buy next look no further. I know it's painful but just drop the cash, you wont regret it. Are these brakes British? No wonder my bike wants to stop at every durn tea plant on the trail and sniff around. Happpy trails!

Bottom Line:Before I bought these somewhat pricey brakes I did some research. Look at the reviews on this site, what do you see? The Hope disc brakes are the ONLY ones to get consistently good reviews. And for good reason. These things are godlike in their power. With V-Brakes you get wet noodle braking. With Hope Disc you get the manly testosterone braking you deserve. Ever wanted to do stoppies or find a need to actually stop on that mindbending downhill before you eat it at 40mph into a fallen tree? I put the DH4 on my front wheel and the open 2 on my back wheel (what am I, Mr. Money Bags?). These things will squeak a little bit at first but after a couple weeks of solid riding they'll whisper. Besides, the squeak tells everyone below you to GET OUT OF THE WAY OR BE MAULED! I used to tap on the brakes to give a heads up to hikers that otherwise would be oblivious of my approach. But alas! no more squeaking. Simply put, if you're going to buy disc brakes, don't wuss out and get some mechanical or crappy Hayes hydraulic. Get the real thing. Get the Hope. 5 flaming poops all around for the most outstanding piece of gear on my bike.

Strengths:Compartively low weight, Eye popping stopping power, modulation, Designed and built in UK, comes fully bled and ready to use, uses automotive brake fluid....
Weaknesses:Ummm.... I lost the little grub screw that secures the reach adjustment. Will not fit with Y2K Manitou MARS C forks (Manitous fault not Hopes)
Similar Products Used:Hope C2 (used on front due to compatability issue)
Bike Setup:Y2K Marin Mount Vision with HopeXC hubs/517 rims,Easton EA70 Monkeylite bars
Bottom Line:I went for discs for 1 reason, mud clearance. However, theres far more to it than that now. These babies allow you to brake later, have more confidence in stopping,my biking has improved 100% especially on technical/rooty downhills.

The Enduro 4 gives far better performance say the XC4 or the Formula B4 with hardly any weight penalty.

Support from Hope could not be better, I spent 30 minutes chatting to them on the phone about what brakes I should choose for my style of riding before they recomended their mid cost Enduro's, only weight freaks and racers should use the XC4 was their opinion, everyone else should go with either the Minis or the Enduro's.

Also they sent 2 replacement grub screws to me overnight top quality people who know how to look after their customers.

Price Paid: $560.00
Purchased At:Airbomb.com
Strengths:I've never had tham fade, ever, sick looking, billet everything, long wearing everything, fit out of the box, no bleeding. Fit my Hayes 6-bolt pattern hubs.
Weaknesses:So much breaking that rotors squeak for a minute when cold and also when really hot, then pads adjust, and it's gone.
Similar Products Used:Shimano disc, Hayes 6", Hayes 8", Cannondale disc
Bike Setup:Non-production blue 2001 Schwinn 4-banger, Millenium 5" front shock, Stratos 5" rear shock conversion, Carbon Monkey bar and post, Azonic/WF "Cullinan" shorty stem, Race Face Team SL head set, Sweet Wings crank with Ti chainrings, Gripshift ESP900 and rear der., Hadley disc 20mm front Hub w/Velocity 440 rim by DAVES WHEELS, Hugi 240 disc rear Hub w/Velocity rim by DAVES WHEELS, Homegrown headset cap and seatpost clamp for style.
Bottom Line:Yes, the DH4 is the best disc brake on earth right now, period. I used them on an 29 lb. XC freerider, and any 100 lb. rider would enjoy the effortless stopping as much as my 190 lbs. They have more power than needed, but never too much due to the moto-like modulation, meaning they actually modulate, as opposed to the others which come on to fast. HOPE customer service was friendly, heads above Hayes, not to mention shimano. The customer service at Airbomb.com was the best I've ever had on the net. The brakes fit and functioned better than all the other disc's I've used, with zero setup. Visually sicker than everything else. Ajustable reach that really adjusts. Self adjusting pistons. Harder rotors than all the others.

Finally, one finger breaking (front wheelies), honestly these brakes are the best gear I've ever used and I ride better and SAFER because of them. I could care less what they weigh. My freeride 5-banger is still sub 29 lbs.

About 30grams lighter than an 8 inch hayes. This brake is light enough for XC and is unbeatable for downhill. Heaps of rotor sizes available. Had a bit of trouble getting the hope rotor on a magura louise hub but that was more to do with the hub than the rotor (had to modify the hub). The rest of the setup was easy.
