$200.00 | | Purchased At: | bike shop | | Strengths: | reasonable stopping power, cheap..got front and rear systems, rotors and bleed kit for £90. | | Weaknesses: | takes forever to set up calipers so pads dont rub, then you go out and within a few miles they're rubbing again. changed pads and for some reason lost pressure and had to bleed brakes. found front caliper rubbed on spokes as wheel went round(caliper body is quite bulky)had to fit a differnt front wheel to stop it. both rotors bent after only a few hundred miles, (had to replace). apparantly company gone under(not surprised) | | Similar Products Used: | hope minis..well worth the extra money | | Bike Setup: | at moment on trek 6500, as i don't use it much. looking for used hope system on ebay as replacment. | | Bottom Line: | don't bother unless you enjoy spending time in your workshop or you like the sound of pads rubbing....at least it takes your mind off cycling. slightly better stopping power in the wet than 'v' brakes but a damn sight more annoying!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Reservoirs to small. I use a syringe to top up them when bleeding them. | | Bike Setup: | Carrera Hellcat 2001 MY. | | Bottom Line: | Good power, but maintenance and setup time is excessive. These brakes should be virtually maintetance free but are now. Suspect rear brake is affected by flexation of the hub when the rider pedals! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$120.00 | | Purchased At: | In Canadian dolars. Uses at Cyclepath Toronto | | Strengths: | Good stopping power and decent modulation. The red matches the rear triangle on my bike. Small. So far no maitnence. Levers are fully adjustable in 3 places. | | Weaknesses: | Levers dont feel great(not to snappy), but Im still able to stop in a hurry. | | Similar Products Used: | Hayes mechs, hayes hydros, v-brakes, shoes. | | Bike Setup: | 2003 Balfa 2-Step DH, Jr T, grimeca system 1 brakes. | | Bottom Line: | Good brakes for the price. WAY more stopping power then my hayes mechs. The leavers squeek a little bit, but not a big deal at all. I dont know why everyone hates these brakes. I was worried when I bought these brakes because of all the negative comments here, but they work fine. They are on my 45lb, 7" travel bike and I can still lock up my wheel if I want to at any speed. They also dont "spap" shut when you touch them(some lock up with just a little bit of preasure. I dont like those brakes because you have to be really gentel or you can go over your handlebars. While I do like the HFX-9 i have tried, these work well enough and are cheeper. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$50.00 | | Purchased At: | eBay | | Strengths: | As brakes I cannot say this product has any strenghts, however they might make a nice pair of paper weights, or a matching set of ornamental anodized aluminum things to show your uninformed friends. | | Weaknesses: | This product does not stop your bicycle wheels from turning. | | Similar Products Used: | Avid mechanical disc brakes (love them. Get yourself a pair and be very very happy). | | Bike Setup: | Full XT hardtail with Avid mechanicals. | | Bottom Line: | These caliper type fixtures cannot be called brakes. Brakes need to have the primary and absolute essential function of being able to STOP a wheel from rotating. These Grimecas might be very nice other things, but certainly one cannot call them brakes.
I used this product for less than one month and rode on them for maybe fifty miles on XC trails in Northern California. I waited for them to "break in." The waiting was in vain, since they just don't work. Poor all around design and possibly a hasty effort to get these out on the market makes these the worst possible excuse for brakes that one can possibly imagine.
I cannot recommend these to any mountain biker. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Front Pistons always sticking out - good for training but hard work

Unfortunaly having manitou forks I had to buy a bracket and a 185mm front disc for them to fit and new shifters so it pushed the price up to £240. So far though I have been very impressed with the braking power they provide, and they look well meaty compaired to hopes\magura's.

$47.00 | | Purchased At: | from a friend | | Strengths: | Consistent all weather performance. Hydraulic feel and maintenance. Better than average breaking performance (after some adjustment at the lever) They're red? | | Weaknesses: | Zero adjustability. The bolts holding the rotor on rubbed on the fork. The caliper rubbed on the spokes. The disc rubbed on the pads. | | Similar Products Used: | Magura, Shimano XT, Hayes | | Bike Setup: | 2001 FSR XC Pro | | Bottom Line: | To fix the above mentioned problems I needed to file the tabs on the caliper down by about 1/4 of a mm and put paper thin washers on the disc bolts. So much for easy instalation and setup. At first the power was absolutely awful, these brakes couldn't bring me to a stop if I was rolling uphill. With some adjustment to the lever pull and moving the lever closer to the stem so my fingers sit closer to the end of the lever I managed to greatly improve power. They're still not as grabby as the V-brakes on my girlfriends C-dale but they have more than enough for trail riding and XC use (definitely not DH material). I still derive the benefit of all weather performance and not having to change cables, the feeling at the lever is very smooth and consistent. If I had paid retail for these I would be disappointed but due to the circumstances under which I acquired them I'm happy with my purchase. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

When I purchased my latest bike I saw that they had Grimeca Disc brakes and thought they would be good. After only 2 rides the back brake locked up and I could smell burning. I took the bike back to Supergo and they adjusted it, but the brakes did not lock up when riding..... So I took it to a local dealer to sort it out. Last weekend I entered a XC race and only after 4 miles the back brake 50% locked up, so I had to undo the back brake - therefore racing with only a front brake - NOT GOOD. I have been told by bike mechanics that these brakes are a heap of crap, and I should get the XT brakes. It looks like I will have to, but I am VERY annoyed as I have only cycled about 200 miles using these brakes and they should last longer. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Brisbane,QLD,Australia Date Reviewed: March 12, 2002 | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Strengths: | None!!! | | Weaknesses: | They are the worst set of brakes that I have had. They came with my KHS 2001 FXT Comp. The first couple of rides were great, good stopping power etc. Then came time to bleed and service them. They are now spongy, unadjustable. One of the bleeder nipples snapped inside and Grimeca would not even reply to me about spares. Contacted KHS and they do not deal with Australian customers. $3200 AUS I spent on the bike and the brakes do not work. The bike is only 8 months old and has spent more time in the work shop trying to fix the brakes.
Happy Trails | | Bottom Line: | So these brakes are not worth the price of half a can of coke. Go the Hayes or even the Avid cable disc. The later is my new choice after reading the reveiws.

$66000000.00 | | Purchased At: | second hand (exagerated price!) | | Strengths: | strong disc, braided hose is a rarity at the retail price... errrrrrr, they work?! | | Weaknesses: | overall heavy, hub needs servicing before it can even be used!, lots of drag, the brake feel could be better, awful lever blade. the bleed nipple is the worst bit: mine snapped off when i was tightening it up and had to be drilled out + repaired. | | Similar Products Used: | magura julie. (plastic leaky german crap) | | Bike Setup: | custom build: amoeba 4 piece bars, tioga d/h tires, single ring bla bla bla etc... | | Bottom Line: | well theses brakes are very good for the retail price but there is so many little problems with them, like the weak snappy bleed nipple, and the slightly excessive drag, and the awful lever blade. also i know the hub is optional to be used but if you do use it i strongly sugest you take apart the rear hub and apply alot of grease to the hyper-glide as otherwise it can start to slip. overall if you realy must have hydrolic disc brakes and you cant possibly afford anything else, you will get along fine with them. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Canberra Date Reviewed: November 19, 2001 | | Favoriate Trail: | Mont 24 hour course | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Purchased At: | Came with KHS bike | | Strengths: | Excellent stopping power and lever feel. | | Weaknesses: | Very fiddly to bleed. Seem very sensitive to setup/adjustment. Stock pads seem to be unreasonably squeaky. | | Similar Products Used: | none | | Bike Setup: | Stock KHS FXT-comp duallie. | | Bottom Line: | These brakes came as original equipment on my KHS duallie. They needed to be bled after the first ride, and it took several rides before they bedded in and started working at maximum strength. Bleeding is not complex if you know how to bleed other hydraulic systems like car brakes, but it's very fiddly due to the small reservoirs, and you need to be careful with the delicate bleed nipple and the screws on the reservoir tops. After this was done though, they have worked flawlessly ever since - very smooth and powerful.
My big complaint is the frequent sqealing and very occasional chattering. They seem to be very sensitive to initial setup of the calipers - you need to ensure, via fitting shims etc, that the pads contact the rotor squarely or they scream like banshees. They are also very sensitive to contamination or glazing of the pads. They seem to readily develop a constant squeak when they are disengaged, although as soon as you apply the brake they shut up. I've found that removing the pads and rubbing them down with fine sandpaper makes them silent again, but after two or three rides the pads are glazed/dirty again, and the squeak comes back. I think it would be worth experimenting with pads, maybe going to a softer compound.
I'd give five stars all round if it wasn't for the noise. They work really well, but I've found the squeaking at times so annoying that I'd go back to cantilever brakes just to be rid of it sometimes.
They just need to much adjustment and attention. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
