$440.00 | | Purchased At: | Sprtymama at Ebay | | Strengths: | Awesome components at this price range. Sturdy, beautiful bike. No complaints with the fork, but I have no reference comparison. amazing entry-level mountain bike. | | Weaknesses: | 30lb hardtail. front wheel spindle seemed overtightened from factory and almost grinding (which I retightened), but otherwise everything was good. one of the "generic bike" manuals that shipped with it was total waste of time. | | Bike Setup: | my 2008 model has Rockshox Dart 2 w/lockout, disc brakes, Deore XT rear derailleur; only upgrade planned: spd/eggbeaters to replace platform pedals | | Bottom Line: | This bike is a very high quality entry level (or mid-level) bike. It's a really beautiful bike; I love the polished metal finish. I greased it up so that everything washes right off (but be sure to keep discs degreased, of course, w/windex rag or something). The tires are awesome (aggressive horizontal bars on rear tires), and the disc brakes are way plenty. The shift system has quality components. I was presently suprised to find my Dart2 front shocks come with lockout; good for keeping the bounciness at bay on long climbs. It' not a heavy bike, but it's not light; about 30lbs for this hardtail. I look at the bike as a great trainer; I like all the components. More than 10 years ago, I had a rigid fork bike, and I was amazed how much more secure I felt going really fast with a front shock; sharp dip creekbeds that would have been practically impossible with a rigid fork are so much fun.
I plan to eventually upgrade the platform pedals (to "clipless" SPD's or eggbeaters) to have better control on fast obstacle-overs and rapid cornering, and so I don't have to hesitate joining the fastest riders. But right now I like to hop off the bike for a few hundred yards for a little crosstrain switchup occasionally (and give my dog Leo a break, if applicable), and being able to use regular shoes is probably more comfortable for that anyway. Just have to watch those sharp pedals on those shins.
My next bike would probably be the ~22lb ~$1200 Motobecane FLY9357, which will probably make some moderately competive XC very fun. Motobecane seems to make quality stuff; surprised this is not considered to have name cache; the trek or fisher at this price would have sucked crap. I did all the setup and tweaking on my own. Recommend trying to adjust the cable slack/tension before touching the derailleur screws; yours might already be tweaked pretty well from the factory.
After 5 weeks of use, I can say, the Motobecane 700HT is overall a really great bike. Hopefully, I'll remember to update my review several months from now. Tip: set brake levers at comfortable downward angle. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | ebay | | Bottom Line: | I purchased this bike in 2005 from ebay as a beginner to MTBing. Since then I have ridden it in AZ, CA, and South Korea. I have logged more than 1,000 miles on this bike and have hit really beat it up. My skill level has greatly increased so I have replaced most of the compenants with SRAM X.0 shifters, X.0 rear derailleur, X9 front derailleur, SRAM PG-990 cassette, and a Truvativ NOIR XC 3.3TM Carbon crankset. I also replaced the brakes with the AVID bb7's and speed dial ultimate levers. I put a new Rockshox Reba Team fork on it and replaced the seat. The next part to be replaced will be the wheels and tires but will wait a few more months. All I can say is that this bike has really stood up to some punishment. I wrecked more times than I can remember. The worst being a 20 fall off the side of a moutain. The bike stood up great and I was able to ride it out. The only part that broke was the left brake lever. I will keep the frame until I have enough money to replace it with a high quality carbon. If you are looking for a good bike to get into the sport with this one is really the best choice. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | on-line | | Strengths: | top quality components, ease of final assembly, looks great, excellent value. | | Weaknesses: | crank does have a "hum" when put under stress.....that is to be expected for the price. | | Similar Products Used: | Compared against: Trek, Gary Fisher, Iron Horse, Specialized, IBEX | | Bike Setup: | straight out of the box. Deore / Deore XT F/R derailleur; Rock Shox Dart 2 Fork -Adjustable w/dampening, and lock-out;Truevativ 5D crank; Deore shifters; Tektro Aquila Mechanical Disc Brakes...comes in a touch over 29 pounds. | | Bottom Line: | Excellent value, great for 95% of the bikers out there, high end components for low-mid tier price, this bike is an "eye catcher". no one can believe that it came in at $450. most of the other bikes that I looked at with similar quality components came in at $250.- to $300.- more. can't beat this value anywhere. Highly recommended. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$349.00 | | Purchased At: | bikesdirect @ ebay | | Strengths: | insane value, solid frame, rediculously nice components, polished finish is very impressive | | Weaknesses: | for the money, non-what so ever... | | Similar Products Used: | treks, gary fishers, giants, specialized in the $3-400 range, for the money, these don't come close! | | Bike Setup: | Dart 2 shocks, Trektro Aquila disk brakes front and rear, Deore fronts, Deore XT rears, pretty much all stock 2008 parts found on bikesdirect.com | | Bottom Line: | i don't think you can do better for the money...i have a feeling i lucked out in a massive way because i was supposed to have purchased bikesdirect's 2007 stock with the crappy Judy fork and promax brakes but for some reason i got the 2008 model...couldn't be happier!
i HONEST do NOT know what these people are fussing about the deore derailers giving them problems...i am a amature with this being my first bike over $150 and i personally adjusted the front derailers so there is no noise and shifts beautifully. At first it wasn't so, it had a hard time moving to the highest gear, but all i did was adjusted the cable at the derailer and boom, no more problems...
i think even for the regular price of $450, i would have been very happy, but for $350, i feel i got an absolute steal!
if you're looking for a great deal and something different, i don't think you'll be disappointed! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | bikesdirect.com | | Strengths: | Shifters are excellant. Brakes are very good. In my opinion the two most important things for me are great and i am very satisfied. Shocks are very good also. | | Weaknesses: | Noisy possibly but i ride with MP3 player at full sound so i do not really notice anything. Heavy but what do you expect at this price. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek bikes from local shop. | | Bike Setup: | Minor adjustments made but mostly stock. | | Bottom Line: | I am extremely happy that i went with this bike. I could have gotten a much lesser equipped bike at a local shop for the same price. I would recomend this bike for the price if you can take care of the setup and slight modifications yourself. This is a great bike for the non competitive rider who enjoys the trails regularly. If you can afford this price then you will be happy.
This is the nicest bike i have ever owned and i am sure that the 1000 dollar bikes are nicer. I am completely satisfied with my purchase. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | bikesdirect.com | | Strengths: | Price! XT and Deore drivetrain, disc brakes | | Weaknesses: | Stem, seatpost, cranks, handlebars | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale M800, Cannondale Super V 300, Specialized M2 Stumpy | | Bike Setup: | Stock - for another day or so | | Bottom Line: | For $450 it can't be beat.
I needed a new bike and was low on funds so I took a chance with it, pleasantly surprised.
The RockShox Dart2 forks are ok, if you like stiff forks then you will replace these soon. The cranks are a mystery, can't decide if I hate them or not. The stem, handlebars, brake levers, pedals, and seat post will be replaced this weekend. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just personal preferences. Have never owned a bike that I did not replace them immediately.
All in all if you only have $500 and want a bike better than a cheap trek this bike is a great deal. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$500.00 | | Purchased At: | eBay - Sporty Mama's | | Strengths: | The disc brakes, when tuned correctly, are suitable. It handles well, and with the shocks set on the stiffest setting, they are not too bad. | | Weaknesses: | The Shimano XT shifters don't work very well. I have pretty much always had problems with them, even after a top of the line tune-up from a shop.
The crankshaft is absolutely terrible. Terrible. It clicks and grinds and creaks and no one seems to be able to fix it. I have many friends who know about bikes and they are all at a loss as well. | | Similar Products Used: | none | | Bike Setup: | baseline | | Bottom Line: | This was my first serious bike. I thought I would be getting a good deal, a $1000 bike for half price.
It has been nothing but trial after trial. I have paid to have it tuned several times, made adjustments myself, done everything in my power to make this bike run smoothly to no avail.
Maybe I got an anomaly with my specific bike, but I would definitely not suggest this bike to anyone else. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Online | | Strengths: | Good control, easy to meld with the bike. Can't beat the price for the components. | | Weaknesses: | None noticed. Plan to change out bar stem. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 4300 | | Bike Setup: | stock | | Bottom Line: | I was really unsure about buying this bike online. The price of the bike with the stock components seemed a little too much for the price and I felt like I was buying a pig in a poke. I decided to go ahead and take the chance. I ordered the bike and then started to worry as I began to find reviews on other sites that kept saying all the positive reviews were written by reps from the company that sold the bikes. It arrived about 5 days later and after a little wrenching I was able to take it out for the first time. I can only say I am very pleased and feel I got one hell of a deal. Not a $1000 ride and but most defenitly worth the $400 | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$479.00 | | Purchased At: | Online | | Strengths: | Name brand components, albeit bottom of the barrel name brand components. Looks shiny. Once correctly routed and adjusted, the disk brakes work extremely well. Inexpensive entry level bike. | | Weaknesses: | RockShox Judy (J2) is useless. The rear brake cable comes mis-wired through the frame (where it is attached to the frame by the handle bar), requiring rerouting of the cable around the other side of the handlebar in order for the rear brake to work correctly. The grips need to be upgraded. Everything is low quality except for the dérailleur which is XT. The Truvativ cranks work, but they are obviously the cheapest model Truvativ makes and it shows. Shifters work adequately. The bearings in the wheels are crap and I had to service them twice already. | | Similar Products Used: | I mostly road bike and use this for riding in winter conditions. I swapped the knobbies for some GEAX Street Runners and the bike at least rolls now! | | Bike Setup: | Added street tires, grips, bar ends, lights, and it makes for a decent cruiser, but hardly a performance bike. | | Bottom Line: | I wouldn't buy this bike again had I known how bad the fork was. I think it would be acceptable if it at least had a lock-out. If you're looking to use this 5-10 times a year it is fine, otherwise look elsewhere. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | ebay -- sprtymama | | Strengths: | It's a nice little bike. Strong aluminum frame with lifetime warranty, comfortable seat, XT derailer, shiny, looks like serious business, nice rims/tires, disc brakes, excellent cost/performance ratio, solid ass-saving construction. A pleasure to ride. Tires, seat, grips, pedals + some bar ends make for an agressive/knurled look. | | Weaknesses: | Included disc brakes and RockShox are struggling. Disc brakes need to be watched closely. Not sure what to think about the crank. The frame is a bit heavy. I'm guessing the extra weight is for added strength to make the lifetime warranty economically sound. Personally, I don't mind the extra weight if it means the frame won't buckle mid landing. | | Similar Products Used: | -- | | Bike Setup: | stock + bar ends | | Bottom Line: | Great value, and will last a lifetime if taken care of. Relatively lightweight, fast, strong, easy to connect with, looks hot. Girly roomy oooooh'd "it even LOOKS expensive!" Maybe not for the serious racer, but a shoe-in for anyone who wants to get into XC/mountain biking and rest comfortably at an intermediate-advanced level with minimal equipment upgrades. Five chilis for unbeatable value, 4 chilis cause it is what it is. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$480.00 | | Purchased At: | e-bay | | Strengths: | Frame is really nice, very strong, very well ballanced. Bling Bling polished finish. XT group... Frame and XT group probably worth the 480 bones. Who else do you know that has one. Gets looks everywhere. | | Weaknesses: | Junk components to be coupled with XT. ProMax disc brakes. RockShox Judy TT fork. Bottom end Truvativ crank. Polished finish shows every little scratch. A little on the heavy side. | | Similar Products Used: | GT Timberline ChroMoly. Motobecane road sled back in the day! | | Bike Setup: | XT, Manitou Black Elite 100mm, Avid mechanical disc, Crank Brothers Egg Beater. | | Bottom Line: | For sub $500 you really can't beat it. But realize you HAVE to upgrade some components. I've always had a soft spot for Motos. I am just starting to get into serious MTN biking couldn't resist getting a another Motobecane after all the years. I am 6'2" 200lb. The Judy TT is junk. No rebound whatsoever... I set the sag up according to the manual.. holy sh!t... After that I cranked the preload as stiff as it would go.. It was then ridable. The ProMax disc brakes are the worst excuse for brakes I have ever seen. They put the excitement back in downhill! Never have been able to stop.
