Very light and stiff with no dishing. Hubs and bearings are great with no problems after racing them hard. I can't say enough about this wheelset, I have even won a few races since changing wheelsets. They actually last a whole race unlike Crossmax SLR.......... |

The bladed spokes make a little noise if they are loose but that can be a good thing. Atleast I know when I need to tighten my spokes if they loosen up. Which is expected when riding them as hard as I do in races. |

EX 9.5 carbon(newer Fuel), full xtr, Cloud 9 rear and Sid Team on front suspension. I had problems with Sid World Cup and now xtr dual control shifters/brakes giving me problems too, don't buy either of these. XTR stopped making dual control in 2008 because of all of the problems they have had with them. |

Another great wheelset from Cane Creek, I had a set of Zonos Team and changed to the SLR's due to weight. That has been the bain of my existance since I have put enough money into them that I could have bought another set for less. I put my Crossmax SLR wheelset on ebay and bought a new set of Zonos Carbon in 2007 since Crossmax is the worst wheelset on the planet. I wish I had just stuck with Cane Creek from the start, I new they were a great wheelset. If you ever have the chance to get a bike with these on them, jump on it, they are worth it. We have some pretty bad conditions at some of the races I go to but I have yet to have a hub or bearing issue which is unheard of. Love, Love, Love this wheelset..... |

I got these through QBP at wholesale because i'm a bike mechanic. They would retail for about 950 otherwise.
These wheels are very stiff. I've used them on my custom epic for about 6 months now and I haven't had to true them yet, even though the tension released a little bit. They are real responsive and I have never heard of someone taco-ing a cane creek wheelset before. I use Panaracer Fire XC tubeless tires with this with slime tubless sealant with this wheelset. The fact that the spoke nipples are next to the hubs and covered is nice as well.
The wheels have taken harder hits than what they were meant for and they hold up better than any other set that I have used before.
Onto the bad...
The freehub body is really soft, and I don't understand why. My XTR Ti cassette dug onto there and now, even with a complete shop available to me, I have not taken it off yet. One of these days I'm going to have to hammer the chainwhip handle to force it backwards to remove it. I have been able to remove it once after the first ride, but even then I noticed how it had dug on. So the next time I get it off, I am going to replace the freehub body.
The wheelset comes with a spoke wrench, but if you lose it, no shop carries it because it is specific to cane creek wheels, and its no less than $20 to replace. Same deal with the spokes, pretty expensive to replace.
So after 400 miles on these wheels I have to say they are the best set I have ever used. One quarter turn on one spokes the entire 6 months. Even with the flaws of the stuck on cassette. I wish I could give it a 4.5 for this flaw, but I don't think it deserves a 4. Being a stingy guy though, I would never shell out retail for something like this. Get em used, get em off ebay, or a discount website (only if you get a mechanic to ok the carbon rims, because chips and some deep scratches will be bad for it). Or get a friend in a shop to pro deal them. |
