Strengths:Affordable wheelset for racing, I haven't noticed any flex and the bearings are still running smooth after a year of hard racing. I haven't had any problems with the nipples.
Weaknesses:Rim tape slips - before converting to Stans I replaced with a wider strip - worked fine.
Similar Products Used:Too many to mention, mostly Mavic

    Price Paid: $300.00
    Strengths:Fairly light for the price.
    Weaknesses:The nipples are very weak.
    Bike Setup:Yeti 575, trail-bike build.
Bottom Line:I got this wheelset for general trail riding with my Yeti 575. I have a heavy duty wheelset if I plan to ride stunts. This wheelset is fairly light for the price. When I originaly purchased this wheelset the FSA website
"claimed" the set weighed 1,650 grams. I got them home and weighed them. The set weighed approx. 2,000 grams with quick releases. Since then the website has relisted the weight as 1,950 grams (the correct weight). At first the wheels stayed true and felt good. However, after a couple months of riding the nipples just began to break and shear. I have broken spokes before, but consistently breaking nipples is very strange indeed. After replacing the broken nipples I brought the wheelset to my LBS. The wrench advised the wheels were not properly tensioned and way too loose. He believed this was causing the wheels to flex, therefore substantialy increasing the stress on the nipples causing them to break. He fixed the broken nipples, properly tensioned the wheels, and they were okay for the last month or so of the season. I placed the wheelset in my garage and left them over the winter. I got them out last month to mount, and found a total of 5 nipples broken. This happened when they were just sitting in my garage! My wheels were now out of warranty, but I called FSA anyway. According to FSA, this is not a normal occurence and they have not recieved complaints about this previously. I find that hard to believe since this problem is mentioned over and over again in these reviews. I have since had my LBS replace all the nipples with brass ones. I have done 2 fairly aggressive trail rides since the brass nipples were put on. The wheels have stayed true, and I haven't broken a spoke or nipple yet. Time will tell.

    Date Reviewed: May 3, 2008
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Smooth rolling hubs. Near silent pawls. Nice looking wheels.
Weaknesses:Seriously, seriously flawed wheels. The nipples are incredibly weak and as other reviewers have noted here they will break. I have had three in total go on me at different times - THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS. I am not a heavy or aggressive rider and this is the only wheelset I have purchased that I have ever had significant problems with. As such I would not recommend these to anyone if they have the choice between these and a custom handbuilt set. Especially if they are heavier than me (11.5 stone).

Also worth noting that these wheels are flexier than the majority of others. This is due to the fact they only have 24 spokes rather than the standard 32. This is fine as it makes cornering quite compliant but they are not particularly light wheels. Mine came in at 1850g without skewers. Makes you wonder why they chose to cut down on strength and rigidity when there have been no significant weight savings.

Lastly, the rim tape is of poor quality and will probably end up giving you a pinch flat after a couple of rides. Replacing this with cloth tape is a wise move.
Similar Products Used:Plenty of wheelsets built mostly on various Mavic rims and Shimano hubs.
Bike Setup:Giant XTC Hardtail. Rebas, XT, Magura Louise Carbon
Bottom Line:Not light, not strong and not really very good.

I bought them on the strength of the reviews here on mtbr a while a go and really, really wished I hadn't. I wanted to like these but in retrospect a pair of good Shimano hubs or Hopes would be a much better bet.

Bottom Line:I'm glad everyone loves their wheels!

I weigh 115lbs and do not jump this bike. I strictly do cross country.

I broke my first nipple within a month of purchase. I was changing my tire when I dropped the wheel on the ground. It bounced up and I caught it and noticed that a spoke had sprung. I have broken 4 more nipples since then. I usually don't notice it until after the ride. The wheel stays pretty true with a loose spoke.

Luckily I do all my own work and decided to replace all the nipples with brass ones. I haven't had a problem since. They do stay true. I have abused them through some East coast rock gardens and nothing more than some nicks. These wheels are now my all mountain wheel as I have moved on to I-9 wheels.

Strengths:Light enough for a cross country riding, stiff enough to go crazy with.
Weaknesses:None that I know of yet.
Similar Products Used:I was using old mavic 321 w/coda expert hubs.
Bike Setup:2001 CAAD4 Cannondale, Magura Marta SL brakes, old SRAM ESP 9.0sl rear, XT front, XT Crankset. (with these FSA wheels and components the bike is at 24lbs).
Bottom Line:I'm 165lbs, and these wheels are bombproof. I've hit head on with a fallen down tree, taken Guaje Ridge in los alamos multiple times. In general, I've been beating them up for over 3 months and they are still true. With a price of less than $300 and the fact that they're only 1800grams, there's no reason to get anything else for training or all around XC riding. And the best thing about them is if I ruin them, I can afford to replace them and with the abuse I've given these wheels in just three months, I could justify replacing them with another pair of XC-300s! To quote Mountain bike Action's reviews: "The biggest problem the FSA XC-300 has is the $399 price tag. Can a $400 wheelset be taken seriously by avid trail riders?...Nothing feels better than riding a fresh set of wheels, and after a month of riding, the XC-300s still had that new hoop feel...They came through with fly colors without any lateral flex or annoying noises. The best thing about the XC-300 is the price, which makes them a smart upgrade (or replacement) for wheels found on a $2000 or cheaper bike."

Bottom Line:I use these wheels to race on only. I use the cheapos to train on. I have done several ruf maine xc races and they are still perfectly tuned even after getting a root through one that sent me on my face in a hurry. they made me feel so much more confident while cornering due to stiffness and with the michelin AT on them they climb just about anything. I don't think I would try any downhill stuff on them but for a good technical race that superlights won't hold up on these are awesome, oh they're cheap too.

Bottom Line:I have ridden them hard for two years, broke superlight headtube weld when I hit tree headon with front wheel ayear ago, it only needed a little truing and has been great ever since, but them on my heckler (built for freeriding) while waiting for warranty on super light, so I could have a lighter trail bike, ended up jumping them quite a bit and even launched a 20' hip with them after casing a double once I blew out a bunch of spokes that all busted off at the nipples, replaced spokes and nipples on rear wheel and has been good ever since, they are back on my super light now and have no probs at all, good bang for the buck, not designed for jumpin though, I knew this and didn't care but was surprised how well they held up, replace nipples on them and these babies will last on a trail bike for long time (2years and counting)

I wanted a set of Crossmax SL but was not willing to shell out a mortgage payment to get them. My LBS hooked me up with the FSA XC 300 and Avid Juicy 7 and it was the perfect setup for my Cake.

    Weaknesses:Skewers are so-so.
    Similar Products Used:shimano/mavic, shimano/sun
    Bike Setup:Commencal Meta 5
Bottom Line:I really like this wheelset. Most of the things I put on my bikes are very much concerned with the price vs. weight vs. quality battle, and this wheelset satisfies all of these categories. The hubs roll smoothly, the free wheel sounds great, and it's probably one of the purdiest (that's idiot for prettiest) wheelset in my opinion. The set has 24 spokes, and I haven't noticed a huge difference between 32 or 36. The wheels are pretty tough. I hit some pretty rocky rides, and some decent drops, and these wheels hold up very nicely.

So yeah, this is a very worthwhile upgrade. Lose your stock wheelset and buy these. It's probably the best place to lose weight on your bike, and these wheels will improve your ride. So buy these wheels. Use them. Love them. Tell your mom about them.

Weaknesses:Rim strips move and don't fully cover spoke holes, Aluminum Spoke Nipples, FSA needs to clean the burrs and shards of metel out off the rim after drilling spoke holes. Hand built by who? They need to slow down and inspect the rims. So much for hand built. FSA needs to clean these rims up.
Similar Products Used:Shimano/Mavic, Shimano XT disc UST wheelset, Wheelsmith built wheels, Crossmax disc, Crossroc disc, Spinergy disc
Bike Setup:06 Cannondale Prophet with Swinger 3 way air and 06 Marzocchi All Mountain SL 150mm travel fork and the rest is blinged right out. weight of large sized bike is 27 lbs w/ pedals. 26.5lbs before I replaced Crossmax's with FSA XC300's.
Bottom Line:Replaced my old 2003 Crossmax disc UST with these wheels. Smooth, Not much flex and fairly light. I replaced the aluminum nipples with brass nipples on the rear wheel after going over an 8 inch round rock lodged in an off camber hillside. I went over the rock smoothly and after I had to push the bike out because it broke the crap nipple. I didn't hit the nipple even and the rim shows no sign of the rock. I went over the rock and boing(not from the suspension) the stupid aluminumb nipple had broken! Rebuilt the rear with real spoke nipples. Next ride a flat. Took and found a burr from the spoke holes had pierced the rim strip. Cleaned them up and blew out a bunch pieces of aluminum that was floating around inside the rims dual walls. New Velox rim strip and I thought about changing the rim strip on the front wheel but didn't at that time. That night while laying in bed I thought I better. The next morning I noticed the front had gone flat over night. Again a hole in the rim strip. Same stupid quality on the build. Burrs, Burrs and a bunch of floating metel in the rim. Cleaned the burrs and shards out then replaced with Velox and threw out those pesky FSA rim strips. Now they're pretty good wheels. They stay true and show little flex but I should have known about the aluminum nipples because I have had bad experiences with them on basic built wheels. I love the hubs. Super smooth and engagement of the freehub is great when putting some muscle into my pedal strokes. Hope they last.

It appears that the nipple just came off the spoke. I see no thread damage to the spoke. Very disapointing. I read all the reviews on this page and one by Mountain Bike Action and made my decision from this. Since so many people have had such great success with them, perhaps this is a fluke. I would be willing to try it again. However I bought these just before leaving for the Philippines for four years, so how to get them back for a return??? So my feelings are mixed, great reviews but I had a bad experience. I'm tempted to try Mavic.

Bottom Line:For the awesome deal I got (even though I had to convert to Australian dollars, so it cost me AU$500 including shipping) it is impossible to build a wheelset at this weight (1.7kg) and of this quality. I can't believe how tough these wheels are for how light they are. They roll so well and have satyed round and true for the whole time I have had them - a litle under 6 months. I'm 6ft2 77kg and ride my 575 bloody hard, mid size jumps and drops (bout 5 footers) and just cant believe that these wheels have held up. I initially bought them cos they look cool and for the price I couldn't resist. I needed new wheels too cos I always munch my rear wheel and have gone through about 3 XC717 rims in the past 12 months.

Anyway, if you're after a cool looking, strong, light and cheap (but dont let the price fool you) set of wheels, seriously LOOK NO FURTHER! Forget the expensive mavic factory wheels, get these instead...they rock!

    Price Paid: $430.00
    Purchased At:Cestria Cycles (LBS)
Strengths:Strong, light, fast, look sweeeet! oh and quite cheap for what ure getting
Weaknesses:black coating is wearing thin on spokes.......err thats not really a weakness, is it?
Similar Products Used:Mid 90's Hope hubs on Mavic 517's & 519's, Campag K2's + other Campag rims......actually the Hope hubs are the origional splined Ti boddied ones and are STILL going strong!.....Hope hubs rock!!!
Bike Setup:Cannon F600 frame, DLR Headshok, XT drive chain (sedis chain tho - shimano chains suck) Avid Juicy 7's
Bottom Line:Im 200lb ex BMX 30 something and ride as hard and as fast as my chunky little legs will allow. Manage to buckle these on the first ride out - although i was trying to keep up with my mate on a Spec Enduro down stupid rock decents all day in the lakes. LBS gave them a once over and theyve been true ever since. Theyve been jumped, raced, crashed and generally abused.
Hubs are still soooo smooth and the free hub has no play.
Cant believe theyre so light, yet so strong.

    Strengths:Strong, lightweight, supah-fast
Weaknesses:Stickers on the rims will make it funky to true (if I ever need to, that is...)
Bike Setup:Jamis XC Pro, SRAM X.0 RD, Shimano XT FD, SRAM X.7 triggers, Race Face Turbine cranks, Avid Mechs, Monkeylite CNT handlebars, Fox f100 RL fork
Bottom Line:I have been very happy with this wheelset. I weigh 190 soaking dry, and they have yet to get outta true. I don't wear kid gloves when riding, either. They are light and FAST! Nice price, also. Built and numbered by Wheelsmith.

    Favoriate Trail:any singletrack
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $300.00
    Purchased At:speedgoat
Strengths:durable, light, beautiful, very fast, very reasonably priced given the quality. I am very happy with the wheels. I put a lot of trail miles on them over the summer and fall and did not need any truing. my original shipment from speedgoat was lost but they quickly sent me a new set of wheel. buy it from them.
Weaknesses:i just had a broken spoke on the rear wheel. the breakage happened while moving the bike in the garage, the tre hit a door frame and i heard a pop. i have been told that to save on weight, FSA uses aluminum nipples...and i guess they are not very strong. again i love the wheels and will buy FSA products. too many stickers.
    Similar Products Used:none...just chippo wheelsets.
Bike Setup:full suspension, whith lots of high end parts
Bottom Line:buy these wheelsets if you want to go fast...take good care of the nipples...they are not strong.
