from Los Angeles, CA Date Reviewed: August 14, 2006 | | Duration Product Used: | 2 Years | | Strengths: | Offer good grip. | | Weaknesses: | Sidewalls aren't that stiff. | | Similar Products Used: | Gazzalodi 2.3 Soft, Minion (2.35), HighRoller (2.35), FireXCPro (2.1) | | Bike Setup: | RFX | | Bottom Line: | I bought this tire to ride the hiking and singletrack trails in Korea (great riding out there BTW). I bought these tires to replace some FireXCPros that I had been running while I was living in LA because I quickly found that the XCPros weren't enough tire for the conditions out in Korea - loose, crumbly granite, deep leaf litter, mud during the monsoon season, and snow in the winter.
I used the Octopuses primarily as a rear tire. The grip is impressive. Both in a straight line and while cornering. The tire profile is square, so once you've exceeded the cornering grip, the tire does get a little loose. The widely spaced lugs allowed mud and snow to be shed easily.
The sidewalls of this tire are not that stiff, as a result I have suffered from my share of pinchflats. This is largely my own doing because I like running low pressures.
I tried to replace these with HighRollers, which seem to have a similar tread pattern at a lower weight, but I never really got along with the Maxxis tires. They just weren't able to match my Gazza/Octopus combo for grip.
Overall, they're a pretty decent tire. Pretty grippy. Just wish the sidewalls were a bit stiffer and stronger. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$33.00 | | Purchased At: | Cycles Routens | | Strengths: | Soft and sticky compound. Allows low pressure. | | Weaknesses: | Loses quickly. | | Similar Products Used: | Michelin HOT, Nokian Gazza. | | Bike Setup: | P'X Jack Flash Rad, Zokes 66VF, Mavic 321, Hayes 200 mm. | | Bottom Line: | To compensate the lack of rear suspension, I inflate them to 1.5 bar max. And it works fine. The tire loses a bit quickly, but it is not critical. The name is good : sticky like an octopus ! Just the price a bit to high. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$44.00 | | Purchased At: | Jenson | | Strengths: | *Hooks in corners like no other tire I have tried *Compatible with a wide variety of terrain *Can be used from all around trail riding to DH | | Weaknesses: | *The only weakness I have found is in hard pack. But if you ride any other type of terain I Strongly Recommend it. | | Similar Products Used: | I used to ride on Continental Vertical Pros 2.3 which is a good all around tire but it just lacks the all mountain feel of this tire. The contis look more like a 2.1 tire and so offer a very marginal cornering capability. | | Bike Setup: | FOES FXR with Curnnut Ti Maverick Fork (THE GREATEST TRAIL FORK EVER!!!) XTR Cranks Avid Juicy 7 Brakes Mavic 3.1 Rims Maverick 24mm Thru Axle Front Hub Chris King Rear Hub
| | Bottom Line: | This is the best tire I have ever used! Buy this tire if youre a trail rider that likes riding fast on the way down and prefer the technical stuff. It has un incredibly low rolling resistence for a tire this size and climbs very well. This tire has made my confidence level improve, I can now rail corners like I never dreamed of and ride technical stuff without the fear of having a pinch flat (conti´s). The only type of rider that I wouldnt recommend this tire to is if youre a weight weenie...or a cross country rider...but I guess those types of riders wouldnt be reading this.
Bottom line...If youre a trail rider or a DH rider looking to save some weight without sacrificing performance BUY IT !!! You will not be disapointed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$35.00 | | Purchased At: | Perfomance | | Strengths: | Good grip in hard pack trails,light weight,great downhill traction.
| | Weaknesses: | Quick wear and soft sidewalls. | | Similar Products Used: | IRC Trailbears and Panaracer XC 2.1. | | Bike Setup: | Stock with XTR front crank. | | Bottom Line: | Fantastic traction on and off the trails with good grip on gravel fire roads. They feel a little squishy when pedaling on flat ground or up hills, but unbelievable traction when descending. These are recommended for the new "all mountain" rider that loves going downhill a little more than up. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$49.00 | | Purchased At: | Cykelcity, Stockholm, Sweden | | Strengths: | accurate and strong, good grip and is affordable | | Weaknesses: | Too stiff and high sidenobbs, | | Similar Products Used: | IRC Trailbear,CONTINENTAL Servival and PANARACER SMOKE'93 | | Bike Setup: | CyclePro Octagon DH'01, Jr-T'02,Boss C50, | | Bottom Line: | This is the first tire for a very long time that reminded me of Panaracer Smoke Classic 2.1. Octopus 2.3 has same great tracktion, and sterdy in high speeds. A great tire on the dirt. And takes alot of abuse. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Lancs, Emgland Date Reviewed: December 13, 2002 | | Favoriate Trail: | Innerleithen | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Price Paid: |
$25.00 | | Purchased At: | The Edge, Lancaster | | Strengths: | Light, good pinch protection, good open tread for just before it goes gloopy. Good tall side knobs to cut in when it's soft. | | Weaknesses: | Due to the side knobs stickin out it can squirm in the dry. | | Similar Products Used: | Comp 24 - heavier, faster rolling but not as grippy when it gets "moist". | | Bike Setup: | Orange Patriot, RS boxxers, Hope discs, Middleburn etc...... | | Bottom Line: | There are two types of DH tyre nowadays - your round profile and fast rolling ones (like Miche Comp 24) and squarer profile ones for damper conditions - all with slow rebound rubber if they're any good. The Octopus is of the latter type and is quality when damp and soft. When you hit firmer sections you have to throw the bike in hard and it will often drift, but it is sooooo nice to control at that point just before you bin it. Basically, they work like comp 16, ie very grippy and stable (similar tread) but weigh quite a bit less and cost less too - does exactly what it says on the tin! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$30.00 | | Purchased At: | X Bike, Seoul | | Strengths: | * grippy in pea-gravel, wet or sandy soil * flat-resistant * lightest true DH tire * narrow (2.35) but still feels as solid as a wider tread * excellent mud evacuation* acceptable wear on the front | | Weaknesses: | * none | | Similar Products Used: | Arrow, Nokian, Intense, IRC, etc. | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Big Hit, Avalanche DHS shock, 02 Super T, Rohloff Speedhub | | Bottom Line: | I've never given 5 chiles to any product, but this is a perfect tire for my application -- from all-day trail rides to DH racing. I'd buy it over any IRC, Nokian, or Intense tire that is out now -- but I haven't used Intense's sticky rubber yet.
Not I've only used the Octopus as a front tire, so my evaluation is limited to that. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
