Even if you try to break the grip on these tires, you will find it hard to. Good rolling resistance on Fire roads and XC trails, like the ones found on Long Island if you have the psi at about 35. The best place I found these tires to work is in deep sand where the soft knobs don't work so much against you. I run it in the front, on a Rhyno Lite XL, at 20 psi. | | Bottom Line: | This tire is outstanding for what it is, a huge, meaty tire. As such, it rolls slow, and is on the heavy side. Not really anything that could be avoided while keeping the benefits, but on fire roads it makes things seem longer.
The grip is amazing. I've found it to excell in all circumstances, from nasty slop to loose sand to jagged rocks and roots. It corners better than I do, especially in loose and chunky conditions. The braking is superb, as advertised. Durability has been good, I've actually yet to get a flat. There have been countless times when one of the side knobs has exploded off a root or rock with a loud FAP, and it took me a month to stop checking for damage. I have found them to be confidence inspiring in the dry though on everything from hard pack, to lose gravel, rocks, on wood and on street sufaces. They also feel good when landing, just not landing into a corner in the wet. No biggie. Great for climbing despite the weight - real good digger. Kick ass for (my new all favorie term) "all mountain."
I'll be buying more at this price for when these wear out - which, with this profile, won't be long. Claws like a tiger.

There are tires with more traction in brakeing or in cornering, but no tire has come close to this in doing both well. This tire is the closest thing i have found to having your cake and eating it too. It also shines in really technical sections, like rock gardens, because you can just bomb right through them. I use the race version which is lighter, and i have still never pinched. Normal tire is the 2.5 Weirwolf I've been using for years. I needed a better mud tire and am quite impressed. Solid tire. Fairly easy to mount. Works quite well on rocks too.

Fits my Marzocchi MX comp.
Ability to run VERY low air pressure. I can run as low as 15 psi.
Extremely sticky rubber. Wet roots seem like dry roots with this tire up front.
Nice and heavy. Sorry, light front tires suck for rough riding.
Rolling resistance not that bad.

I'm a fast 6'4" 215lb rider so when I lean it over, brake hard into a corner, or climb up a face I need a tire that sticks and this tire delivers. This is the new freeride standard tire by which all others will be judged. New for 2005 it is also available in 2.3" and 2.8" so now only the 2.1 XC weenies can complain! If this tire loses its stick it is rider error... all you riders that like to blame your trail yardsales on your equipment (you know who you are) better not buy these tires because you have no excuses with these bad dog tires. | | Weaknesses: | NONE! Used to be that you could only get the 2.5" but now with a 2.3" and 2.8" the offering is complete. Of course that assumes that WTB didn't screw something up when they scaled the tire up and down. The Timberwolf is a wide tire, but it is 2.206" sidewall-to-sidewall. My Nevegal 2.5 tires are 2.250".
The Timberwolf's ARE my "widest" tire at over 2.6" wide knob-to-knob.
They are so wide they wouldn't clear my chain on the back of my Turner XCE in certain gears. I keep the Nevegals in the back for Mammoth and the Timberwolf's up front.

I expected lots of traction in the loose conditions at Mammoth and that is what I got. Unfortunately, Skid Marks and other top of the mountain trails were closed on openning weekend, so I will have to post another review when I get a chance to ride them in the really nasty stuff.
Gobs of braking traction and cornering traction. The knobs are large and tall and seem like they might squirm (maybe on hardpack), but they dig in on the loose stuff and give you traction.
A very wide tire (2.250" sidewall to sidewall), with very tall knobs and even taller side knobs. Knob-to-knob width was over 2.6" measured with my caliper, so these could actually be rated a 2.6 tire and not a 2.5.
All those knobs add up, though, and this "race" version weighs in at 988 gms. Slightly heavier than my Panaracer 2.4 FR tires at 960 gms. There is no free lunch!
But heh, we're talking Mammoth, and the only real climbing is to the grill for a drink and a burger!

I STILL love this tire!!!! I have used many tires over the years and never had anything do so well on such a wide variety of conditions. As stated in the first review this tire did great in NM mid winter conditions. It has since spent some time in the front range, Fruita, moab, and dry spring conditions. It is fantastic on every surface I've ridden including slickrock!
More importantly though, it is by far the best tire I've used to date in loose conditions and is out of this world here in the loose, dry, gravely soil of northern NM. It just always seems to find traction.

First off, looks like just another square blocked dh tire until you look at the side knobs. they are HUGE!!! and well reinforced to boot. Thus far this tire has seen mud, snow, mud over frozen ground, sand, rock, pavement, basically a little of everything. It really seems to hook up well in all conditions, even mud over frost. there were a few instances where I thought I was going to wash were I suddenly felt the knobs grab hold. so far so good! oh, did I mention it even sheds clay mud well? the real test will be performance on a predominatly rock substrate.
