Description:Patagonia Barranca

Submitted by Mark a Cross Country Rider from LA, Ca
Date Reviewed: May 26, 2001
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Price Paid: $90.00
Purchased At:Patagonia Great Pacific Iron Works
Strengths:Great looking.
Weaknesses:Like all shorts of this type they suck!! You need a bib short or a proper lycra racing short to keep anatomy in order. These shorts are a compromise and should be made without a liner for use over lycra racing shorts.
Similar Products Used:Nema, Fox, Giant,
Bottom Line:Simple. Go look in Patagonia Catalog and order you some model GI 11 SHORTS. These are not made for mountain biking but are excellent for use over lycra. They have no seams in crotch area and have two side pockets and a zip up rear pocket and also a zip cargo pocket on the outer left thigh. Plus, they are $31 cheaper.

Date Reviewed: August 1, 2000
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Fit, pockets, padding.
Weaknesses:None yet.
Similar Products Used:This is my first baggy short.
Bike Setup:Trek 7000.
Bottom Line:Bought my first pair on sale at an outdoor shop just to try a baggy. After wearing these on a few mountain bike rides, I got a second pair off the web (closeout special) for around $35. They are great shorts, and probably worth the full regular price. They don't snag on your seat, have good padding, and the pockets are really handy. The back zipper pocket is set high enough that you don't even notice your wallet when you're riding. These were my favorite shorts on RAGBRAI, as I could carry $$, beer tickets, and other necessities comfortably.

Date Reviewed: May 30, 2000
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:patagonia, this is for their slipstream shorts. Great breathability, seems a shorter leg length, but that's just a difference
Weaknesses:maybe just a tad bit thick chamois, but still comfy.
Similar Products Used:pearl izumi, cannondale, performance
Bottom Line:priced right, great fit, give'em a try, great product garauntee (sp). I feel, literally, that this will be a great short once the chamois packs down a bit. The side panels appear to be see through, but offer great ventilation and moisture transfer. Should be great on and off road. There.

Favoriate Trail:
Alameda
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
Pockets are great. Finally have somewhere to put stuff.
Patagonia quality.
Lifetime guarantee
Weaknesses:
Price
Similar Products Used:
Trek Lycra shorts
Bike Setup:
Softride MTB. Specialized Body Geo seat.
Bottom Line:I used these shorts all last summer and loved them. I biked to work but since my job required black shorts as part of the dress code this was perfect. Wish I would have had them for my cyclotouring trips. That way you don't have to look like such a fruit loop when you get somewhere, yet you still get the padding.
Very comfortable.
Cannot say enough about the convenience and ergonomics of the pockets. The change safe design is ideal for cycling. This way you don't lose coins and chapsticks and whatever else might roll out while riding or sitting.
Five flaming turds.
Overall Rating:5
