Description:White Brothers Fork Wipers

Favoriate Trail:poison spider
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $20.00
Purchased At:lbs
Strengths:Cheap
Weaknesses:does not keep innards clean
Similar Products Used:stock boots
Bike Setup:'97 Judy Xc
Bottom Line:The only reason i bought these was purely for looks. So i did not follow the orignal instructions that ask that i remove the fork boots and the original wiper seals for less stiction. As soon as you touch this wiper you know it will not keep very much dirt out, it does not have very much surface contact and it's not very tight. So i left the orignal wiper on and packed grease under the white bros wiper and the fork was 3x smoother. that grease quickly leak out so i added a sponge and a fork oil/grease mixture that made the fork work more smoothly that a wiper/boot combo. With these seals you have more maintance than with a fork boot but my set up does run smoother and i think it takes away that K-mart look of the forks.

Bottom Line:Don't even think about buying these things. I got mine pretty cheap, but they are still worthless. I figured that these wipers might do a better job at keeping the crud out of my seals on my Judy DH. I figured wrong. I feel really sorry for all of you guys that spent $20 or more for these. White Bros should be ashamed of themselves for making an inferior product. I couldn't get one of the wipers to seat properly on the lowers. What the hell? Might as well use nothing over my seals. I think I will give the Enduro-Wipers a try next. I heard that they actually work.

Strengths:Work well at first. Makes your fork look spiffy.
Weaknesses:Does not increase performance.
Similar Products Used:Moutainspeed speed seals (great!)
Bike Setup:99 Jamis Dragon w/judy SL
Bottom Line:These are only replacements for boots, and leave your stock XXX resiwiper seal in place wich is already sticky to begin with. They do not allow any type of radial movement, thus they begin to stretch over time as your fork stanctions push against them, leaving a gap and letting water and gunk in.
At first they did their Job scraping mud and gunk off the stanctions, nothing but a cosmetic improvment over boots though.
I used them for 3 months before they became unuseable and had to throw them away, which was an improvment to my ride as there was less dirt and mud getting caught on top of my resiwiper seals.
I cannot reccomend these products to anyone, as they are inferior to OEM boots, and are a complete waste of money.

Bottom Line:That reviewer "San" way down below had a great idea with putting foam wipers on underneath these. I was amazed how smooth some hand-made foam donuts made my fork--especially after I soaked them in 7.5 wt shock oil before tucking them under the wipers. This isn't a bad product for Manitous I found (somewhat to my amazement) that the grease under the seals was prefectly clean after 5 20-30 mile off road rides. They seem to let grease (Prep M at least)come out of the fork but they scrape the dirty mess right off. I've had a lot less grease migration since I put the foam in though. As for the price, you have to realize that these are really high precision moldings, they are perfectly round and the tolerances at the scraper edge are very high. $17 is not that much to pay for something that is obviously pure vanity--not that it is bad to love the way a bike looks!

Bike Setup:
Zaskar LE with Atom Bomb Z2
Bottom Line:When I first saw these wipers on one of my teamates bikes, I was skeptical at first because it looked like there was nothing that was protecting the seals. Upon closer inspection I noticed that there was a hard plastic scraper type thing was angled at 45 degrees that scraped mud, water and dust away. After lifting up the fork boots on my bomber, I noticed that the boots simply trapped the dust inside of them. I thought I would give the wipers a try and it has been one of the best upgrades I have made. The trick with these is to do what Lee tells you to do and put some oil, I used White Lightning, under the wipers until it overflows. The looks are awsome and performance is spectacular. After a good two months of use I thought I should inspect them to see if they were working and they were. There was not one spec of dirt or any water under the wiper, the seals were in perfect condition. After reading other reviews it seems as though the ones made for Rock Shox aren't as good but I definetly recommend the ones made for the Z2 Atom Bomb.

Bottom Line:FORK WIPER PLUSES:- Allow for faster movement of your fork as boots tend to trap air slowing the fork action over stutter bumps.- Save a few grams in weight.- Look better than accordian boots.- Easier to clean and maintain on a regular basis to keep dirt out of the fork internals.- Easier to clean the outside of your fork.FORK WIPER MINUSES:- Although dirt will get under a boot (and you should lift and clean underneath) with a fork wiper the dirt hits your fork directly. Some dirt will get under the wiper, whatever brand you choose. Eventually, if you don't clean, this dirt will work under your fork seals. If you still don't clean you will be buying a new fork and maybe writing another negative report on fork wipers.CLEANING:I suggest the following cleaning method which doesn't take a lot of time, and if you clean this area as often as you clean/oil your chain, you should have no problems. (Assuming you clean/oil your chain.)Lift up your wiper and wipe inside clean with a rag.
Place lots of your favorite grease over your stock seals.
Push back your wipers. The grease, if placed sufficiently, should squeeze out between your fork and wiper, completely filling the void.
Wipe excess grease off.
Pump the fork up and down.
Wipe excess grease off.
Go riding.

Bottom Line:Contrary to other reviews my ste have worked perfectly for over two years. They actually work - boots don't. Boots can trap nasty moisture on your stanchions which is not good. A critical factor to using these wipers is to slop a sh*tload of lube under them and in their lip. The sork also seems to have less stiction probably because of the lube resevoir and less material rubbing...

Bottom Line:The product is the best I have used and spent on. It provided the sealing capability much better than the accordion. I have ridden my bike in a wet and muddy condition, I have even sprayed the fork with the carwash hose in the self serve area. I had this wiper on my fork from the last 2 years and I normally clean my fork every Winter. The last time I disassembled the fork was this Winter and I found that the inside have no contaminations. One suggestion, before every ride I will wipe the lip area with Judy butter. This seems to help in eliminating water, dust or mud from getting into the fork. Overall this wiper works and I am glad I spent the $30.00 Cdn dollars that its worth.

Bottom Line:

This product has to viewed with the perspective of why they're on your bike. I do not like black, ugly, heavy accordian-look-alike boots. I put these on my Judy. In dry weather they do a respectable job in keeping out most of the dirt. You have to clean and grease the sliders more often as the judy butter or slick honey will gradually work its way out. They do a so-so job keeping out water. For those anticipated rides, I simply velcro on a pair of lizard skin boots. The two working together seem to work and the skins can easily be removed after a ride in the rain. If your regular boots seat well, they'll probably protect a little bit better. If you want a really cool looking fork, I'd take these way before the Mountain Speed wipers (both in looks and function, but that's another review!!). For what I want them to do, I rate them at four chilies.

I've had these for 6 months now and I've been through all kinds of water and mud. I haven't had any water or mud get through. A little dirt but not any more than with the stock boots. I think the key is to keep plenty of Judy Butter or whatever grease on the stanchions. If they get dry there isn't any thing to make a good seal on the wipers. You probably want to use more grease than normal BE GENEROUS!stiction problems? you've got to be kidding they can't have that big of an effect they are only 1.5mm thick. Yeah, I thought these were cool at first, but now I've thrown my big old boots back on my old Judys. These were pretty good at first, keeping the dirt and grim out, but after a month or 2 they just couldn't do their job good enough. It allowed dirt to mix with my fork grease and it would gunk up the sliders. The forks wouldn't travel smooth and I could tell a big difference after I cleaned them. I can't believe they're almost $20, they should be around $5!

These are a good solution for me, because I ride mostly in dry, dusty conditions. They're easy to lift up and wipe underneath after every ride, which keeps minor amounts of dust under control. However, they do nothing to keep water out, and are little help in really dirty conditons. For most riders, these are a really bad idea. Use the original boots.

Bought on June 30, 1998 from my LBS for my '95 Judy DHs. Previous to this, I used only the stock boots and wipers. When I installed the White Bros wipers, I had no significant wear on the fork stantions or bushings. After each ride I noticed that there seemed to be small amounts of water being left on the stantion tubes as I pushed the shock up and down. After 6 rides (approx 1-2 hr each), I disassembled the fork and found a large amount of water in both tubes. Also grit and dirt appeared to be packed under each White Bros wiper. Both the stantions and upper bushings were noticeably worn and scored. I removed the White Bros wipers and reinstalled the original Rock Shox boots, along with fully re-lubing everything. Needless to say, I was not happy. Returned the offending wipers to my LBS, who called White Bros. According to my LBS, White Bros told them that, yes, they know there are problems, especially with Judys. And, no, they had no solutions right now and couldn't do anything for the customer...nuff said? Any questions? Good 'hall of shame'candidate. After reading these reviews, if you buy these, you will get what you deserve. White Bros won't stand behind them.

Bottom Line:

Here it is, I'll keep it simple. The wipers are very good at keeping grit and grime out when new. I raced in several pits of mud that were supposed to be courses with no ill effects. However the boots don't fit as tight when they wear after time. What you need to do is either purchase some foam doughnuts (like the Mach 5 used under it's boots) or just make some yourself out of some medium to thick density foam. Put some Judy butter, teflon oil, or whatever gets you off on the doughnuts, insert them under the wipers and you're set. Obviously you will have to clean the doughnuts periodically. I personally didn't notice increased stiction, rather decreased friction but I don't run Judy butter on the uppers as I think it's slow. A good teflon (read Tri-Flow) lube is better in my opinion. I've never had any nasties INSIDE my fork. I think White Brothers should include foam/fabric wipers with this product.
