$70.00 | | Purchased At: | Universal Cycles | | Strengths: | Set it and forget it. Front der. trimming ability. Ability to keep your fingers on the bar. No "gear indicator" nonsense. Brainlessly simple operation. Cool carbon fiber finish (poseur points...) | | Weaknesses: | None (period) | | Similar Products Used: | Rapidfailure. | | Bike Setup: | blah blah | | Bottom Line: | I'm a long-time rider, mechanic, and part-time racer. I recommend sram drivetrain components to any rider seeking advice. Don't even bother with that other S company. SRAM stuff is so sweet: put it on, set the limits, pull a little cable tension, go ride. It just works. Maybe feed it a little grease once in a great while and replace a worn-out grip. I supposed if Shi*ano ever figures out what SRAM is doing so well, we may have to worry, but thankfully they're too busy making flourine bushings and other fiddly stuff that's supposed to be replaced every 6 - 8 months. Yeah right. Shut up and ride. Got to get a shout out to Mike at Universal Cycles. Check 'em out, great deals and excellent service. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'm shifting 20% more frequently than before which translates into higher average speed & fun. Haulin' down a new trail and run into a steep hill around the corner? No problem, grab a handlfull of the SRAM shifter and select any gear you want. It's ability to shift under torque, and to always get the right gear is downright impressive, and something that I never knew was possible. I'm more pumped than ever to ride my bike. I actually find the shifting resistance perfect (some have posted that they're stiff) especially compared to my previous setup, where Popeye forearms were required. Purchased for $89 US at Universal (for 9.0SL shifters and 9.0 derailleur), you can't go wrong. At first I thought the lack of exact shifting for the front derailleur to be a nuissance, but the micro adjustment has turned out to be really cool to quiet the chain-to-cage noise that occurs on extreme ends of the cogset. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I also dont like their 2000 line as much as I like their 1999. | | Bottom Line: | I first had Shimano LX shifters and an XTR rear deralier. They shifted fine and smooth, but when you are in the big ring and peadling as fast as you cat at an uphill it takes longer for you to shift into the small ring with rapid fire. I think my gripshift is great. It seems like you can go through all the gears in less time with grip shift. With my rapid fire shifters when I would go off of a big drop or do some jumps I always would shift into some other gear. But with the gripshift that doesnt happen. And I have to say that the 9.0 and 9.0SL line looks so much cooler than XTR.
I also had problems with my rapid fire system. I would have to contanly re-adjust my gearing, not with grip shift though.

These GRIPSHIFTS 9.0SL are by far the smoothest, lightest shifters/deraileur you can buy!! My only gripe is they released the front der. yet and can't get Pauls anymore so I am relagated to the Shitmano XTR. I've been using these since the SRT 600 days and they have only gotten better since. The wimp who complained above about having to shift SRAMS best after 24 miles of racing is a WUSS! Shitmano is crap and they design their stuff to need replacement often. If you use Jonny Snot (shifter lube) and Ride-On cables, these beauties will out last your frame set. I replace cables every 500-700 miles and these things have yet to fail. divermagoo@aol.com They deserve a full 5 Chiles! | Overall Rating: |

I recommend the SRAM 9.0 SL to anyone who wants to improve there bikes performance. My DBR X2 was equiped with Shimano XT rear derailleur and LX shifters. I had problems with the derailleur from the first ride. I finally got fed up and went to the 9.0 SL. Havent had one problem since. Shifts are smooth and solid. No such thing as overshifting. The gripshift also allows you to dial in the front derailleur so the chain can pass through without any rubbing. Your handlebar is also less cluttered. This is the best upgrade i have made so far. The 9.0 SL is worth its weight(maybe more then its weight considering it is light as hell)in gold.

But I really wanted the rest of the package and heard the 9.0 SL's weren't too bad. So I gave them a second chance. The new/improved shifters are great! Shorter twist compared to the Xrays and the action is precise. And regardless of what's said by other's, you don't need popeye arms to twist these things. I race mountain-bikes for Texas A&M University, and I have had these shifters for about 5 months now, and I've absolutely loved them. My only gripe is that ONCE, and only ONCE, during a wet race, the right shifter's grip started coming off. I readjusted it, and figured out my other problem: I have a bottom-pull router on the bottom-side of my bottom-bracket. The screw loosened during the race, making me have to really yank on the shifter because the router would turn and snag the cable. THAT is what caused the grip to come off, and it wasn't SRAM's fault. It was mine for not checking out my bike thoroughly before that race. These things are tough! I've crashed all over the freaking place, and these shifter pods have taken every hit in stride. I honestly believe that Shimano hasn't made a product that I haven't broken. I HAVEN'T broken any of SRAM's products, so get them. You WON'T be sorry!!!!! | Overall Rating: |

These shifters are without fault. I'm surprised at Racer X's review - although he does allow that the 9.0's are lighter and more durable. Obviously it's a matter of preference whether you use Rapid-Fire or Gripshift. I don't have a problem with the twisting motion and it does'nt effect my control. I personally do not know why people are so enamored by Grip Shift. The only thing that it has going for it is light weight, simplicity, and maybe more durable during crashes since it does not protrude from the handlebar.First, the 9.0 does note give you a fair value for the money. Guys, you are all paying for some expensive pieces of plastic. Though improved from last year, it is still too stiff for my standards. During a race, I literally try to wear out my shifters. The constant changing using the wrist is just unnatural. Let's see, usually at the end of a 24 mile race, the last thing I want to spend excess energy on is shifting gears. Rotating your wrist causes me to have to deviate from my standard hand position during downhills, a no-no i n my book. Very difficult to shift and brake at the same time. You better be strong in order to shift these things once it is wet or muddy. I don't want to have to buy that Bassworm or Gore cables in order to make this thing work as well. Shimano XT works with standard cable without that stinkin' bassworm, and can't be beat with Gore cables.I would consider buying these things if the action was lighter, and if they actually made a rear derailleur that lasts for a while. I know of at least two people who have gone through at least two of the carbon-composite rear derailleurs that these things use.Back to the drawing board SRAM. I do admire the perseverance of going agains the Big S though. But the bottom line is that these products need more work. | Overall Rating: |
