I built them up (I used to be and from time to time still am a wheel builder) paying close attention to even spoke tension (use a gauge) and gradually tightened them over the next year! since then they have not been trued or re tensioned ONCE! in at least 15000miles over 14 years, I am a lightish weight @160lbs rider but above all have them built by some-one who knows what they are doing, and then pick a good line down hill!.... eyelet cracking is often caused by uneven loose tension causing stress risers and rim wall wear is done by small stones in brake pads in a few seconds! stop and remove them! the reason they last .... they were built with care! applies to all wheels. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Mavic 217 SUP on XTR hubs, Wheelsmith hand build | | Bottom Line: | Before my 217's, I was running a 517 in the rear and a 221 up front. Both went out of true (albeit slightly) after only a handful of rides. The 217's have been subjected to much more punishment that my old wheels ever were, yet they are still as true as they were when I got them. Shaving off some ounces of rotational weight wasn't so bad either.

Now they have outlasted the Haro and are on my Kona FS mount. These things were built very sturdy and on the heavier side for durability and it has worked out great for 5 years (6000+ miles off-road) now - CD rims, 14 guage 3-cross, XT hubs, brass nipples. I have only trued the rear wheel twice, guess it helped that I am only 145 lbs. These things have handled 1ft drops, lots of stairs, dried creek bed descends, and all the big hownhill/freeride trails around here without breaking. My friends and I are completely amazed that I am still using them, even after all the hard miles. The wheels' durability was probably also due to the dry riding conditions out here, and my riding style too. I recommend staying away from machine built wheels - HAND BUILT WHEELSETS ARE VERY DURABLE IN MY EXPERIENCE. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

They crack at the spoke holes due to metal fatigue. The spoke pulls out through the rim, even with professionally hand built and trimmed wheels, DESPITE the double eyelets which connect inner and outer walls of the rim box section. The eyelets simply crack in half, putting all the load on one wall of the rim, which is not up to the task. Consequently, Mavic rims are not worth their price. Also, they dent easily on any trail with even moderate size pebbles, despite massive tyres correctly inflated. They are far too narrow & weak for any MTB. | | Similar Products Used: | Alessa, Weinmann. | | Bike Setup: | Merlin Titanium MTB frame Deore XTR gears Middleburn cranks Ritchie pedals PACE DH suspension fork. Mavic 237 up front and 217 Sup out back. | | Bottom Line: | I've used the 217 Sup hard as a drive wheel with a Shimano LX hub for 4 or 5 years. Large river bank rocks only navigable at speed, roots, stumps, plenty of air time. Replaced the rear 237 early on when it potato chipped jumping over a log. The 217 has remained true for a long time.
Key seems to be having a good wheel builder build it. He told me the factory built (assembly line) wheels are weaker and that a wheel built by a good builder is much stronger. So far that has seemed to proven true. I just inspected for defects and everything still looks good.
If I weren't able to get a really good builder to lace 'em up I might look to another rim based on a lot of other reviews I've read. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Eyelets rip out of rim. | | Similar Products Used: | Other stuff | | Bike Setup: | GIANT ATX 890 (but with Bombers) | | Bottom Line: | From day one the the eyelets started getting stress cracks around them (on the rear wheel). The rear rim needed regular truing to compensate for the spokes slowly pulling out. After two years of normal XC riding the cracks were massive and one day three spokes ripped completely out.
Brake surface is nice but these rims are not suitable for a rear wheel (especially nine speed) as the metal is too soft.
On the up side the stickers are nice and my front rim has hardly been touched in two years and has no cracks.

Aguentam-se bem ás torções, são uma merda depois de umas travagens mais fortes (com os magura hs33), teem boa durabilidade.

True I pick up a lot of salt, sand and ice but I keep the bike pretty clean. This rim gains its lightweight by shaving the walls too thin; making the rim sidewall unreliable and prone to failure for anyone but a recreational summer rider. All the spoke eyes started to get stress fractures, the aluminum turned a lighter color around many of them and several pulled out completely. The sidewalls are straightenable with linemans dikes and a soft cloth if you ever ding one, but it takes quite a lot of skill to put one back in proper round/hop. Run a lot of spoke tension on this rim it can handle it with the eyelets. if you can, since it IS a little flexier than steel, use long-threaded dbl butted spokes and locknuts (adds about 1oz to your wheel big deal, but makes it impossible to untrue short of a 10foot ledge onto a sidewalk! | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |
