from UK Date Reviewed: June 21, 2008 | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Strengths: | Durable, reasonably light | | Weaknesses: | Absolutely hopeless with certain tyres | | Similar Products Used: | Various Mavic, etc | | Bike Setup: | One Orange 5, one Cove Hustler, both with DT 5.1D | | Bottom Line: | Firstly, the positive: These wheels are relatively strong, stay true despite a fair amount of abuse, and are relatively light.
Then the negative: I made the mistake of fitting a Maxxis Swampthing to one of the bikes. This had to be done with a huge amount of brute force, assisted by various profanities. Then the eventual puncture. First, we break the tyre levers. Then we break the steel reinforced tyre levers. Then we desperately try and prize the tyre off the rim with pure steel levers, damaging the rim in the process, and still not managing to remove the tyre. Finally I had to cut the tyre carcass off the rim with a cable cutter. Nice.
Then the Kenda Nevegals: Same story minus the cable cutters. Eventually the tyre came off, using steel and reinforced levers.
So, in a nutshell, do not buy these rims if you plan on removing tyres. Of note is that neither Panaracer Cinder nor Rampage were a major problem.
Buy another rim. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$69.00 | | Strengths: | sturdy rim for aggressive XC/all mountain riding, nice platform for 2.35 tires unlike many rims out there, good weight to strength ratio for climbing that hill to bomb the other side | | Weaknesses: | none that I have noticed in 3 months, durability yet to be seen | | Similar Products Used: | rhino lites, bontrager rhythms, race lites | | Bike Setup: | '06 fat possum, manitou suspension, sunline stem bars, xt drivetrain, hope pro's nevegal 2.35 | | Bottom Line: | I have no idea what some of these people are talking about, too difficult to put a tire on? come on man how long you been fixing flats? and thanks to whoever said get a drill, it set that guy straight. I will begin by stating I am a 200 lb rider. I do not have any flat spots but I don't drop much over 4 ft. I heard that they are soft and will get bent up hitting rocks on the side (mountain bike uk report) but I have not noticed it. Let it be said that if your bike rides you these aren't strong enough, but if you pilot your bike they will suit your needs on most non black diamond trails. Any rim built to climb and descend will get destroyed if you run it square into sh*t and drop like a dead weight. These can take some punishment but will do well on the climb too. A good buy in my opinon for your 5-6 inch bike. I'll follow up in another 6 months on the durability, leaving a star off for a durability tests. If they pass I am lacing up a pair for my single speed santa cruz chameleon. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Victoria Date Reviewed: March 28, 2008 | | Favoriate Trail: | anything pointing down hill | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | ryders | | Strengths: | really light | | Weaknesses: | weak as hell if you are free riding/jumping | | Similar Products Used: | deemax, 729, double track | | Bike Setup: | 08 sx trail II, 66RC3, Dee Max, you get the drift | | Bottom Line: | I suppose these would make good extreme cross country wheels, but i dont understand why they came on the new sx trail. its a free ride bike, and within the first 2 months i destroyed my front wheel beyond repair. Bottom line NOT FOR FREERIDING OR DOWNHILL RIDING! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Strengths: | Good strong rim, runs true. | | Weaknesses: | stupidly hard to get a tyre on the rim | | Similar Products Used: | Mavic crossmax enduro | | Bike Setup: | Yeti 575. XTR running gear, fox float 130 rlc, juicy 7's | | Bottom Line: | These rims are good, stron and run true, but you would think they would make a rim these days that would be easy to put a tyre onto, i would hate to be out bush and want to change a flat in a hurry, wouldn't happen set aside 30 minutes. I will be going back to Mavic and try the 819 | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$150.00 | | Strengths: | Strengths? Compared to my last set of rims, these things are kryptonite! Strong wheel build by Overlook Mtn. Bikes in Woodstock. | | Weaknesses: | Umm.. I've found none so far. | | Similar Products Used: | Sun X/C rims, several different sets of Mavic's. | | Bike Setup: | Rims are built up with Hope Bulb hubs and DT 14 gauge spokes. 32 hole. 2.3" Kenda Kinetics front and rear. Frame is '02 Ellsworth Isis, Marzocchi AM SL fork, Romic rear. Drivetrain is XT/XTR/Raceface combo. | | Bottom Line: | Bottom line on these rims/wheelset is that I haven't experienced stability at speed like this on any other set of rims I've owned. Comparing them to my older Sun XC 2 wheelset by just spinning them in my hands while holding the freehub displays superior gyroscopic forces that contribute towards this. I'm weighing in around 205#s these days and hit 3-5 foot drops fairly regularly. These rims give me total confidence in my riding and don't flinch at anything I throw at them. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Denver Date Reviewed: September 26, 2007 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | I've never abused a rim like this | | Weaknesses: | Absolutely nothing | | Similar Products Used: | Mavic 823 | | Bike Setup: | Transition Covert | | Bottom Line: | I don't know if the previous guy has ever heard of a drill bit but if you don't like presta then drill the hole larger. It's not rocket science.
I've never had a rim that I can not worry about until now. I'm a big guy and ride hard.......not one problem. It makes sense these rims are a popular choice for high-end builds. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Manchester Date Reviewed: September 23, 2007 | | Favoriate Trail: | Glentress V trail | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Strengths: | (Blank) | | Weaknesses: | Presta valve only on a 'all mountain' rim? Remember breaking tyre levers in the old days? Well nostalga is back. The tallest rims and a sod to get a tye on or off. | | Similar Products Used: | Mavic. X321 | | Bike Setup: | Blur 4X, Thomson, King, Pike etc. | | Bottom Line: | I broke front Hope hub/X321 Mavics so needed a built wheel quick. This rim is appalling, who makes an all mountain rim only available to Presta and not Shrader inner tubes? Plus remember the time of stupidly hard to seat/fit tyres onto rims back in the early 2000's? Well its back - Mavic you can fit by hand, just slid fingers round to create slack then thumb over.
Oh great, stuck with this rim until it bends and now have to carry a spare shrader AND Presta tube in my backpack. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$500.00 | | Purchased At: | Mill Valley Cyclery | | Strengths: | Light weight, 500 gram rims that are 28mm wide. Seemed real stiff, corners great. Got the 5.1 front and rear hand built with Hope pro 2 hubs, 10mm bolt on in the rear and you can switch the front hub from standard qr to 20mm. Built with 14gauge dtswiss comp spokes. | | Weaknesses: | I put a flat spot on the rear rim in less than six months. Wheels were so stiff and durable i didn't really hold back and thrashed em really hard. The rear took a lot of big hits, big drops, dirt jumps, and burly single tracks and was doing good until recently. Now it will never be true, and it wobbles like a mother. If i could go back in time I would of gotten a 819xm rim for the rear and leave the 5.1 in the front. I think it can handle being in the front, but the rear rim is toast. I think its a great xc rim, but not meant for anything else. | | Similar Products Used: | crossmax, 819xm, 317xm(original wheelset that came on bike, 517, dtswiss 4.1, 233, a bunch of older mavic v brake rims. | | Bike Setup: | 2006 Trance with reba sl set at 115mm with a 2006 fox rp3 that has been pimped out by push industries. x9 shifters and rear derealeur, xt front derealeur, race face evolve xc cranks, time atac carbon pedals, dtswiss 5.1 with hope pro 2 hubs, race face dues seat post, dkg clamp, hope stainless braided brake lines, shimano xt four piston disc brake in front, hayes x9 in rear, xt cassette. thomson stem 70mm, and answer protaper bars. | | Bottom Line: | Don't buy this rim if you plan on free riding it, or if you are an aggressive xc rider who thrashes your bike to the max! especially if you want to ride these downhill, probably not a good idea. after paying 500$ for that beautiful wheelset, and in less than 6 months the rear rims gets a flat spot and all whobbly, i was dissappointed. go with the 819. People jump off buildings with those rims and they're just fine. im planning on, when i get some more cash, to build up a 819 on my pro 2 hub with 12 gauge sapine spokes. I figure i'll be in the clear with that build up. wha da ya think? it still is useable, doesn't wobble enough to upset my handling, but i think they didn't use enough material. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$100.00 | | Purchased At: | slippery pig | | Strengths: | strong and relatively light welded 21mm internal width rim | | Weaknesses: | a little softer than mavic maxtal wheels | | Similar Products Used: | mavic 717, Sun CR18 | | Bike Setup: | 2001 stumpjumper w lots of upgrades | | Bottom Line: | used with XT 6 bolt disc hubs
great wheel for running wider tires on xc/trail bike
I don't freeride, so I expect these rims to take all the abuse of aggressive xc riding | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
