Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Came with Bike
Strengths:Lots of adjustments - once you get it dialed in it works great.
Weaknesses:I put in 150 pounds at night, 8 hours later its down to 100 pounds.
Bike Setup:Trek 9.9 Top-Fuel SSL
Bottom Line:I am sure its a great shock if it would hold air - this one is going to be returned to SRAM for replacement.

Date Reviewed: November 16, 2007
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $260.00
Strengths:Easy setup, very plush. Motion control gate and open positions are used often. Lockout is seldom used as my bike does not bob much, but on really steep and smooth climbs it is nice as it prevents the rear end from sagging from weight transfer.
Weaknesses:Hardware is way too spendy.
Similar Products Used:Stock/Pushed & variable air chamber equipped '04 Fox Float R, '06 Manipoo Swinger and a Noleen coil rear shock way back in the day. The MC 3.3 is the best so far, tech marches on...
Bike Setup:XL Astrix Monk with the following AM build:

WB Fluid 130 equipped with the new HD crown and steerer.
DT Swiss 36h hubs, Hugi FR rear converted to 10mm thru bolt, Hayes branded 20mm thru axle DT built front hub, both laced with DT comps to Kris Holm 29er Unicycle rims.
Gravity Dropper seatpost with 1" and 3" drops.
Hopey steering damper.
RS MC 3.3 rear shock: way better than the stock Swinger 3 way.
20-30-42t compact chainrings on LX 570 square taper crank, XTR 952 trigger shifters.
Avid BB7 brakes grabbing 8" rotors, Avid Ultimate levers.
Bottom Line:Great shock for a reasonable price. My Monk's rear suspension has a very linear 3 to 1 ratio, so I would expect similar results with other designs with similar action.

Strengths:The best part is the option that you have. I can go from a super plus shock for the trail or a firm when i have to go on the road. Its also very light.
Weaknesses:So far i have not find any and I do not think I will.

Favoriate Trail:none of your business
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:came on bike
Strengths:Light weight, easily adjustable, holds air, great lockout for road sections, easy to service, large air can=low pressure
Weaknesses:none so far
Similar Products Used:none...coil Vanilla R
Bike Setup:06 Ellsworth Epiphany, most come with a Fox shock (Float R, RP3 or RP23)...mince came with the MC 3.3
Bottom Line:So far i am pleased with this product. It does its job, you can ride in fully open (for the really bumpy stuff and techy climbs), Motion control (pro Pedal) for the smooth singletrack and fully locked-out which i love since i do a lot of road sections to the trailhead.

The shock is plush and quiet and holds its air pressure.
And in comparison with the fox shocks, the MC 3.3 requires about half or the air pressure (i am 155 lbs and for 20% sag i have the shock set at about 70 psi).

Favoriate Trail:Holy Cross
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $249.00
Purchased At:online
Strengths:Lightweight, motion control dampening works perfectly and is easily fine-tunable, rebound is very adjustable and shock performs well over small and large bumps, never bottoms out
Weaknesses:hardware is expensive
Similar Products Used:Manitou 4 Way Swinger, Romic twin tube
Bike Setup:Azonic Propulsion, Magura Louise FR Brakes, Magura Asgard front fork, Mavic 819 UST, SRAM drivetrain
Bottom Line:***This review is for the Rock Shox MC 3.1*** I was skeptical when buying this shock from reading previous posts regarding the MC line of Rock Shox but thus far I have been nothing short of impressed. This shoc was OEM equipment off of a Trek Fuel and it works perfectly with my Azonic's Horst link suspension system. The savings in weight over my Romic is considerble and while certainly not as plush as the Romic coil, the overall performance has been superb. After installation, I gave it no time to break in and rode 41 hours in three days along the Colorado trail covering 202 miles of singletrack and didn't lose one pound of pressure. I've now got a little over three months into this shock and ride three - four times per week on the Colorado front range and this shock has thus far exceeded my expectations.

Favoriate Trail:fr stuff
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:ep
Strengths:adj range
weight
reliability (yes really)
very large air volume
Weaknesses:i cant really think of any. it takes a little time to setup when you are use to all of these "fancy" shock out there
Similar Products Used:air 4-way, coil 6-way, vinilla r, float pro pedal r, sid dual air (god i wish this still was around). others
Bike Setup:preston FR setup for hcore riding and still light enough for the trails

btw the fork is a pike with matches the shock very nicely
Bottom Line:i really really like this shock. all the major adj are right at your finger tips. the motion control also effects the over all compression of the shock. the one guy said that the clicks in the rebound do little to the shock and that is right to an extent each click is a very small adj but there are 30 clicks i think and the total range it very wide. this shock is actually very light, much lighter than expected and i was kinda worried until my last couple of rides, which where are dh parks with lifts and the shock has performed much better than expected in those very harsh situations. i shock has about 30-40 dh miles under it now and never once even hickuped.

the ride

it is a little on the harsh side but less then most any other platform shock on the market (yes even pro pedal). it take big hits very well. it also is more active than you might think but it will only show it when you push it hard, it lets you know how well it can work but you finding it easy to find traction in some difficult situations.

the setup

this shock requires some really low air pressures. i weight 250 lbs+ with gear and i only have to run 130 psi in the shock and i have not bottemed it once let (gotten close though) also i'm running about 50% rebound and about 25% motion control. i bet the reason people are having to many problems it because the shock was not installed right or setup right.

the end comment

don't let these other review worry you too much. i have pushed this shock very hard and its loving all of it (so am i). it can take whatever you want to throw at it.

Favoriate Trail:Stillwell Woods, Woodbury, N.Y.
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:East End Bicycles, N.Y.
Strengths:Motion Control works great. Love the on the fly adjustability.
Weaknesses:Rebound adjustment not too responsive.
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel EX7, stock.
Bottom Line:When I first purchased the bike the shock lost all air pressure after 1 day. Brought it back and the shop rebuilt it for me at no charge. Then after about a year of regular use, I had the same exact problem Ben had. What actually happened was the internal rebound chamber just unscrewed from itself and released all the oil. So I brought it back again and the shop had a replacement for me installed in just 2 days for no charge. Shop is great, shock ain't so great.

Favoriate Trail:anything near to suicide
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:bob us bikes
Strengths:Holds air almost perfect, easy setup, reliable lockout, floodgate works pretty good
Weaknesses:lacks a little sensitivity
Similar Products Used:Fox Float RL pro pedal
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel EX7 with XT crankset/bottom bracket and Mavic Crossmax Enduro wheelset
Bottom Line:Can´t complain about this rear shock! Didn´t have to refill air for more than 3 months now, no problems even with larger bumps. OK - the rebound adjustment is not very reponsive. It´s only the last view clicks that really have an impact on damping behaviour...

Favoriate Trail:Mary's - Fruita
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Bicycle Village
Strengths:The motion control is great when the shock actually works
Weaknesses:Reliability
Similar Products Used:Fox Float
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel EX7
Bottom Line:Bought the bike brand new and on the 3rd ride what feels like the preload mechanism broke causing the shock to travel through 15% of its stroke with no force and then the remaining travel was normal. Tough to ride with it banging up and down like that. Took it back to the shop and they took care of getting a replacement, now after about 30 rides, the same thing again. My next bike will not have a rock shox in the back. I would stay away from this shock unless RS make some serious improvements to the reliability.

Strengths:Brand new
Weaknesses:Had the bike and shock for only two days and the rear shock wasn't holding air preasure.
Similar Products Used:FOX, Cane Creek
Bike Setup:06' Trek Fuel EX 8
Bottom Line:Rock Shox has some serious quality control issues. Filled the shock to 120 PSI and six hours later..completly deflated. Imagine what would happen on the trail. Shop sent the shock in for a new one. Hopefully I have better luck with the new shock.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:Came with bike...
Strengths:Lockout
Weaknesses:Cant hold air. Pressure drops after 15 min or less of riding.
Similar Products Used:Fox Float, 5th Element
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel EX8
Bottom Line:My experience has been bad with this shock. To be honest, I want something I know will work when riding. Dont get me wrong, Im probably 1 in a million to get this issue, but first impression was a bad one.

When locked out, it still has a little bobbing. The shock would have been perfect for my riding if it worked...unfortunately, it has been nothing but a waste of time and problems.
