from Mad River Valley Date Reviewed: May 12, 2008 | | Duration Product Used: | Tested or demo'ed only | | Strengths: | fast inflation, accurate guage. | | Weaknesses: | bad reviews at this web site | | Similar Products Used: | crank bros, Zefal, topeak | | Bike Setup: | Litespeed Ocoee single speed | | Bottom Line: | Surprised to see this pump get panned. I was so amazed by its performance I thought it would be at the top of this list. First pump I've ever used that I've liked - works better than my full size frame pump (Topeak Master Blaster) Much better than Crank Bros or Zefal. I'm gonna buy one. I'm hoping bad reviews were just from people not seating the valve in the pump properly - I found it easy to use. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$20.00 | | Strengths: | It is small. As for strengths, that is about it. | | Weaknesses: | Oh where to begin. You can't get more than about 30 PSI into the tire. Also, it is really easy to bend the presta valve because as you are pumping, any movement of the pump (which is inevitable since it is a hand pump) puts a bending force on the valve. | | Bike Setup: | Trek 1000 | | Bottom Line: | I guess I can say that I paid $20 for this pump only to learn that I should have gotten a better one. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Gauge is completely inaccurate. 2 year warranty. | | Similar Products Used: | Blackburn Mammoth MTH-1 | | Bike Setup: | Trek 7000 hardtail completely upgraded through the years. | | Bottom Line: | Trek should do better than this. Stick with Blackburn (lifetime warranty that they really do honor. They replaced my 5 year old pump with a new one at no cost. I bought this one because I needed one in the interim) or Topeak. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$20.00 | | Purchased At: | E Bay | | Strengths: | Lightweight (156 grams); Not TOO small, but small enough to fit in any of several different places on the frame; Moves a good amount of air, yet will produce plenty of pressure for any mountain bike tire; Has patch storage in the T-handle; Switchable from Schrader to Presta; Uses a replaceable O-Ring instead of a leather cup inside. Easy to use and has never failed me. | | Weaknesses: | None that I'm aware of. Does it's job as it was designed to. | | Similar Products Used: | Topeak, Zefal | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Schwinn Rocket 88 Stage 1; Avid Mechanical Disc Brakes; Mavic 517/Ultegra Wheels; XTR Derailleurs; Wipperman Stainless Steel Chain | | Bottom Line: | I'd buy this pump again, and will if I can find one. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | T-Town Bicycles (the best!) | | Strengths: | Mine is the Mosquito model. Fast, on the go C02 action with a manual pump feature that can be used anytime, as long as there is a cartridge in the barrel. The C02 control system worked great. Mini design is light and portable. | | Weaknesses: | Like it says, manual pump is for minimal use, not to pump tire up to 70psi. This is explained in the directions, so technically it's not a weakness. It's a limitation. Use it to put about 20 pumps in, so your tube is positioned correctly within tire. Then open up the C02 release and fwoop!
| | Similar Products Used: | None. | | Bike Setup: | '02 Trek Y-26. Every component upgraded except wheel set and front derailluer. | | Bottom Line: | So far, so good. Worked exactly as it was suppose to. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$15.00 | | Strengths: | Fair build quality, handle lock, high pressure capable | | Weaknesses: | Valve "lock" function extremely pooly designed! If you're not Superman: Stay away!!! | | Bottom Line: | Wrenchforce "Ventilator 3": First look reveal a short moderately fat pump for both auto and french valves (latter not tried). Aluminium barrel and "inner stick". Handle is lockable - very convenient when throwing the pump in a bag. The pump comes with a mounting-bracket for the bottleholder (pump attached to bracket with velcro strap). The valve works nicely with auto valves - no air is let out between pump strokes.
All in all everything seems in perfect order! BUT... The pump is locked to the valve by twisting the aluminium barrel. Works ok in the shop - bu when the pump is on a valve: AAARGH! I've never had problems opening a jar - but even in warm weather I've got huge problems holding on to the barrel. Great force _is_ necessary. With cold hands it's virtually impossible!!!
Unless you plan on carrying a wrench (and potentially ruining the barrel) with the pump the verdict is: "NEARLY USELESS!" | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Actually works | | Weaknesses: | Rubber cap ripped off | | Bike Setup: | Trek Fuel 80 | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is that for $20-$30 this is a good pump. It fits both presta and shredder and works good on both. The rubber cap busted off in the first week but it really isnt needed. The lock works great and havent really had a problem with it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | The Bicycle Doctor | | Strengths: | It pumps air | | Weaknesses: | It doesn't pump air very well | | Similar Products Used: | Blackburn | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Trek 8000 | | Bottom Line: | It took me longer to inflate the tire with this pump than it did to change the tire. In addition, I couldn't get more than 25 psi. in the tire. Simply put, this pump is junk. Don't walk, RUN away from this one... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

You'll have to eventually | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Air goes into the tire. | | Weaknesses: | Not much air goes into the tire. | | Similar Products Used: | Topeak Road Morph | | Bike Setup: | Airbone Zepplin road bike | | Bottom Line: | Using this pump is great for burning calories -- like having a portable gym connected to your frame. But if the reason for using this pump is to pump up a road bike tire to more than 80 pounds, I cannot recommend it.
It is useful for emergencies to get barely enough air in the tire to get home. But I think most riders may be better off with a Topeak mini pump (easily pumps over 120 lbs) or CO2 or a frame pump. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$10.00 | | Purchased At: | Pets & Pedals | | Strengths: | The McGuiver of pumps ! Gives me another place to stash junk in its handle | | Weaknesses: | Mines a "reject" with a nice split in the handle.. alloy pipe will soon solve that problem | | Similar Products Used: | Car tyre pump (great big metal thing you stand on, pushed a LOT of air. 30 PSI into a 26x1.75 with 10 strokes) | | Bottom Line: | For a reject its quite nifty. Only used it once, but gotta love the convertible tip. The added tools are quite nifty, if some what useless (2 tyre levers ? Come on). The hollow handle is VERY handy for stashing patches tho | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I works great, especially for the price. It's dirt simple, and there are little pictures on the pump body to show the arrangement of the little components for Schrader/Presta valves. However, the pump has a tendency to leak air at the valve stem if it is not held just right. Overall, a great pump for anyone, especially if they are on a budget and don't mind buying Trek products.

from Owatonna, MN Date Reviewed: September 22, 1999 | | Favorite Trail: | all of them | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | Durable, double action pump, comfortable, easy to use, cool looking, made of aluminum | | Weaknesses: | plastic schrader to presta piece is hard to get out | | Similar Products Used: | zefal, topeak | | Bottom Line: | This is a great pump. It pushes a lot of air. It is comfortable even without a t-handle. Much better than any other pump I've tried and at under $25.00 it is cheaper than many others. It also pumps easily!!! The only downfall is that little plastic piece that needs to be switched around when pumping different stem types. Bring a paper clip to use as a hook and pull it out. Otherwise it is great! | Overall Rating: |
