$100.00 | | Purchased At: | My friend | | Strengths: | Well I got these pedals for my 2001 RM vertex which i raced XC on for many years. I even am using the original cleat, which is now worn out,but integrated into my shoe! Amazing in mud, easy on the knees and so durable. these things have been bashed off rocks, taken the brunt of when my bike flew off my car and I have actually been using them on my road bike until i find a road pedal I want. | | Weaknesses: | I only have one pair | | Similar Products Used: | Time attack composite | | Bike Setup: | Marzocchi z2 atom fork, xt brakes(crap) 2005rapid rise xtr rear, xt front racefaceLP rings, xt hollowtech cassette, sram rocket shifters | | Bottom Line: | Great long lasting pedal. $115.00 | | Purchased At: | Can't remember | | Strengths: | Great in Mud, decent platform, durable determined by 6 years of time tested abuse | | Weaknesses: | the cleats are expensive | | Similar Products Used: | Shimano | | Bottom Line: | I have owned these pedals since 2001. I bought them to replace shimano spd after they failed me on a very rainy and muddy race. I could not clip in. at the time of this review i have had them for 6 years. the metal rails have clear worn marks through years of abuse and a piece of the carbon platform is broken but they still work fine. I had to replace the cleats and i think they too expensive. Time ATAC work great in mud. I think the Egg beaters are a better design and are lighter. But many people who own them say that the small platform wears on there feet after long rides and the candys clip out a little to easy. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$75.00 | | Purchased At: | Seattle Bike Show | | Strengths: | - Light - Excellent tension - Easy to get into and out of - Never accidentally unclip - All weather performance | | Weaknesses: | - Very fragile when compared to Aliums - 6mm allen key installation means it is very difficult, if not impossible, to remove | | Similar Products Used: | Time ATAC Alium, Wellgo | | Bike Setup: | Cannondale hardtail | | Bottom Line: | I got these carbon pedals cheap on a visit to the Seattle bike show some years ago. I needed a new set of Time ATAC pedals and saw these pedals on special so bought a set. I'm a Time ATAC convert ever since I borrowed a friend's set when my old pedals broke, and have used a set of Aliums since.
The carbons are very light, but they're also much more fragile. Having now done 5 years and 25,000km on the Aliums with no problems at all aside from a lost dust-cap, the Carbons were a major disappointment.
The back spring on my left pedal broke on both sides after just a year's use (even though using it with a broken spring doesn't seem to hurt its performance at all.
The right pedal unscrews itself on a regular basis and sometimes the only way you'd notice is when you pull up on air on an upstroke to find a pedal securely attached to your cleat but not to the spindle. Eventually the carbon part broke apart on one of these occasions and that was it. I can't justify paying such a high premium over the Time Alium and having an inferior, more unreliable product.
Carbon version of the Time ATAC is installed using 6mm allen key, and this means it's almost impossible to remove at the best of times, simply don't get much leverage on a 6mm allen key. Another mark against the carbon.
The moral of the story seems to be: Lighter is never better. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'd always ridden with platforms and toe clips but decided to switch to clipless when I got my Cinder Cone. I bought the ATAC Carbons after reading the many positive reviews on this site and I haven't been disappointed. The ATACs have made the transition to clipless quite easy. I've fallen a few times but that's just part of the learning curve. I've used the Carbons in heavy mud and did not have any problems clipping in. Unclipping is quite easy as well and the amount of lateral float allows for a comfortable degree of foot movement. They are well made and built to take a beating. I would definitely recommend the ATAC Carbons whether you're already riding clipless or thinking about switching. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I ride all year, ice and snow in the winter and 60 to 100 miles per week in the summer. they have lasted me 4 1/2 yrs and have only been rebuilt a handfull of times. Only now, just short of the 5 year mark they are they beginning to die. I ride hard and alot and have never had the reason to use any other pedals since i began to use these. The bearings so far as i can tell are non replacible...maybe a custom size...and mine are beginning to ride rough, but i still have no real play and am way too stubborn to replace them anytime soon, so i guess we'll see how much longer they last Im going for 7 yrs, without new bearings if i can find new ones ill never replace them...Oh yea sometimes the plastic guards, the ones that are yellow or blue or green , sometimes they crack, but it doesnt really effect the engagement too much, atleast for me. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Crank Bros are great but have you looked at the price of the Eggbeaters latley who has $400 to blow on pedals? I know these are not cheap but when compared to the triple ti pedals thay are a deal. If you don't want to spend that much spend some time on e-bay you can find some esy enough. Shimano just plain sucks they are too flimsy and break really easy. They are easy to clog up with mud and other stuff from the trail. Shimano pedals engagment and release could only wish to be a postive as these are. Basicly out here in Long Island we get some of the nastiest mud around and we all use some form of Time pedals if your looking for the best mud shedding pedal with a good price tag get time. If you can afford a set of triple ti Eggbeaters get em and send me blank check while your at it. Thinking of going cheapo just tell me how stupid you feel falling over in mud getting cover with it and then having to remove your shoe to get off the bike. It happened to me and I felt like a Dumb A$$. As for all the people who have had release problems there are a set of directions for mounting the cleats try reading them. One cleat is for the left on is for the right you mount them wrong guess what you get and impossible release angle. Just stop crying and get a pair of Time's PEACE! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$90.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance | | Strengths: | Mud! Sand! Swamps! They always work. They hold firm and can handle hard smacks on rocks. Low maintenance. | | Weaknesses: | Heavier than some others (egg, frog, beebop) - colors suck! Ice can compact in cleat and cause trouble - like every other pedal except eggs and cages. | | Similar Products Used: | Time Z-Pedal, BeeBops, SPD, Cage | | Bike Setup: | FSR Pro, 6" Helix Pro, Hayes Disk | | Bottom Line: | For heavy duty freeride or downhilling over rocks and roots, Time Attacks are the best deal. Let's face it .. you have other things to worry about then your foot accidently popping out or jamming with mud when barreling down a mountain at 30mph.
I have soundly beat the HELL out of my pedals in rock quarries, mountain hills, rock gardens and swamps. They take every hit in stride.
They make an audible 'click' and hold well but release with a quick twist. And almost always emergency release during a wreck .. SPD's tend to hold and tangle you in a heap - tearing knee ligaments.
I use them, all my buddies have converted from various SPD to Time after seeing my ease to thier troubles. I'd buy them for my GrandMa if she rode!
I see lots of bikes with lots of pedals but I never hear complaints about Times (other than the funky paint job)
EggBeaters have a similar hold system (without a platform) except the Egg spindles connect through to the opposite side. This means if you hit a rock on the bottom, it unexpectedly releases your foot from the top. Time Attacks have independant grips (four) They never seize in mud like BeeBops. They don't unexpectedly release like Eggs or BeeBops. They don't jam like SPD or BeeBops. Wide target to clip into unlike SPD. You hear the 'click' when you snap in. They are not adjustable other than float degrees. My shoes wear out before the brass cleats, so no worries.
Time Carbons are pretty much the same as Time Aluminums except for the cover.
BUT - I have recently upgraded to the Time Attack Z-Pedals because they have a wider platform for Free Riding.. my old Times are going on the road bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
