$1.00 | | Purchased At: | Krogers | | Strengths: | Compact, dense, relatively healthy, tasty, filling. Goes well with water or coffee. | | Weaknesses: | A little dry, but added moisture would make it fall apart so it's not really a weakness. | | Similar Products Used: | Powerbar and McDonald's Quarter pound Texas Double Cheeseburger | | Bike Setup: | Motobecane 300HT - completely stock | | Bottom Line: | I don't run or ride distances long enough to justify eating a Cliff bar while I'm out. So instead, I eat these mostly at the office when I'm too busy to leave my desk for lunch.
I like to buy the variety box which contains Chocolate Chip, Crunchy PB, and Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch. The Chocolate Chip is my number 1 pick! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance, Sports Basement | | Strengths: | Great taste, consistency. Fills you up. Easy to chew, moist. Price is affordable. | | Weaknesses: | Try the flavors....some of them are funky and you probably will hate some of them. I first tried the chocolate chip and it's probably my favorite, don't think I could eat the pumpkin flavor on a regular basis! | | Similar Products Used: | Powerbar, Gu | | Bottom Line: | Back in the early nineties when I was a kid and started mountain biking in Marin, we had Powerbars. You chewed the nasty junk and put up with the awful taste. It was just assumed that taste and texture were to be overlooked in favor of extra strength during a ride. There wasn't any options other than candy bars (which frankly were more satisfying!) Having your teeth almost get pulled out from your skull eating a Powerbar was lame.
Then Clif bars came along and I never looked back. They have a huge amount of flavors, find your fave and enjoy. If you don't want to bring whole food with you on a ride, pack these and some water.
Make sure you wash it down with water. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I only eat these now and have given up on the others out there. Powerbar tastes like dirt, melts and gets sticky when it get hot. Metrex foodbars are good but they sit in your stomach like lead and make you feel sick during a long ride in the heat. So far it like the crunchy peanut butter, peanut butter chocalate chip and cookies and cream. Buy them down at vitamin shop by the case and you get them for a dollor a bar instead of a dollor firty and a box lasts a while. PEACE! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Around here, all 7-11's carry clif bars and most of the grocery stores do too. Tastes WAY better than a powerbar. Doesn't melt either! | | Weaknesses: | It's ugly. Almost scary the first time you try one. | | Similar Products Used: | Powerbar, Luna Bar, GU. | | Bike Setup: | What? I'm reviewing a Clif bar damnit | | Bottom Line: | What more can I say? They're good energy bars than taste great and are easy to come by. I'll never eat a powerbar again. With powerbars, you need them to be at room temperature to be edible. Too hot, they melt. $1.00 | | Purchased At: | Trader Joe's | | Strengths: | Doesn't melt, more natural than most energy bars and more covenient than a bag of trail mix. Stamped with a use by date. | | Weaknesses: | Different flavors have vastly different caloric/ nutritional content. | | Similar Products Used: | Powerbar, luna bar, balance bar, pria, fig newtons etc... | | Bike Setup: | SC superlight | | Bottom Line: | Out of all the energy bars out there, clif is superior. They don't look pretty as other reviewers commented but they are filling, taste good, nd don't melt in my pack like other energy bars. They also don't have that artificial vitamin taste....I feel like I'm actually eating something healthy. They are also relatively cheap compared to other products. I usually get them for about $0.90.
One minor complaint that keeps me reading the labels is that the calories vary from flavor to flavor by a significant amount. The apricot is one of the lowest cal flavors while choco chip peanut crunch is one of the higher cal flavors. Makes sense when you think of the ingredients though.
I also like the ICE bars for those mornings that I can't get enough coffee in me before the ride. Unfortunately these bars, like the Clif Luna bars, have some sort of meltable coating and aren't great to take along unless you like licking the wrapper.
4 chilis....5 when they stop looking like crap! :)

I've found that my endurance, recovery and even performance are all improved to varying degrees with these. I rode Bike New York this year and only had 1-1/2 of these for the entire day and it was fine. I was never hungry and felt energized throughout the entire ride.
The only real problem is that they look like crap ... literally. The chocolate brownie seriously looks like a cow pie. However, it doesn't taste too bad.

Because it is relatively soft, I find it too pasty in my mouth. You need a *lot* of water to wash it down during a race. | | Similar Products Used: | None, thinking of Powerbar if it's a little crunchier/drier. | | Bottom Line: | Honestly, this is a good bar. For training or epic rides, it totally meets expectations. But I've had too many instances during enduros where I've been very uncomfortable trying to eat this stuff. Not only do I end up consuming more water (cytomax) than I want, but my HR skyrockets because I can't friggin' breath! I've tried smaller intervals (still consuming 1 per hour) and the stuff still somehow ends up lingering around my mouth for hours. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Doesn't sit like a rock in your stomach, no sugar buzz, easily digested, gets the energy to you quick. | | Weaknesses: | More expensive than the classic banana/bagel combo. | | Similar Products Used: | Any and all, these are the best in my opinion, both for taste and functionality | | Bike Setup: | XC | | Bottom Line: | Very good energy bars. Even people who don't like energy bars could like these. Lots of vitamins, good flavor, plenty of protein. But in my opinion, we'd all be better off sticking to the natural stuff- fruits and bread. If you want the extra vitamins, take a multi-vitamin before your ride. If you want the protein, make some beef jerky in your oven.
