Description:ACCELERADE is the most significant advance in sports drink research in 35 years. Developed by leading exercise physiologists, ACCELERADE is the first sports drink that provides rapid hydration plus the added benefits of all natural protein to re-energize muscles during exercise and help muscles recover faster after exercise. Only ACCELERADE contains the patented 4-1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein to speed the movement of carbohydrate energy into muscles. Studies at leading sports science labs show that protein-powdered ACCELERADE extends endurance up to 24% compared to a conventional sports drink and up to 57% compared to water. If you're serious about your exercise, advance to ACCELERADE.

    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $25.00
    Purchased At:Performance
Strengths:none that I can tell...doesn't work any better than cheaper and better tasting sports drinks
    Weaknesses:Lemon-Lime? It doesn't taste anything like lemon-lime!

Nasty flavor, texture, and it upsets my stomach
Similar Products Used:GU2O, Cytomax, Twin Labs Ultra Fuel
    Bike Setup:does it matter?
    Bottom Line:in a word "BARF!"

This is the nastiest tasting sports drink I've ever tasted. Instead of promoting me drinking during a ride, it kept me from drinking. Thick consistency doesn't help either.

But the bottom line is this...I saw absolutely zero performance increases over other more tasty sports drinks...none. Why would I want to drink this crap when others like the GU product are soooo much more palatable?

    Bike Setup:Ellsworth Truth
Bottom Line:I like the taste a lot. I do not like the fruit punch, but I like tangy orange the best, but I also like lemon lime. When I am riding I like drinking accelerade as much as water, it tastes that good, but don't put it in camelbak. Bottle cage only.

    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $18.00
    Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:Decent electrolyte with not bad flavor.
    Weaknesses:Isn't more effective than Gatorade.
    Similar Products Used:Gatorade, Endurox
Bike Setup:Trek 5200, Rocky Mountain Vertex TO
Bottom Line:I don't recommend Accelerade for these reasons:

    1. Over priced. The product itself isn't bad, but Gatorade (powder form in canister) is a better choice for the dollar. I found that Gatorade hydrated me at the same rate as Accelerade on 90-95 degree 3-4 hour rides. I'm an avid cyclist that logs all my rides, and I definitely noticed that Gatorade=Accelerade, so I'm going to save some money and use Gatorade.
    2. Protein? Accelerade's big thing is protein, but I really don't think that your body would metabolize protein in the middle of a ride that quickly. Eat protein during your recovery.
    3. Doesn’t mix well. I have a CamelBak, and Accelerade doesn't mix very well - it leaves "globs" in the worst places (tube, corners of reservoir).
    4. Mucous. Because of the globs, this forms mucous and that's irritating when breathing hard during exercise (has to be spit out). Note: I don’t drink milk, so it can’t be blamed on my diet.

    Date Reviewed: May 24, 2006
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Good taste, well tolerated, price per serving, enough calories for most XC races
Bottom Line:I've been using Accelerade for about 2 years in my bottles during races. I find that the amount of calories that it gives per bottle is about right for a lap of a typical cross country race. It contains enough electrolytes for short races assuming the temperatures are 80 or below. For hotter races, I need to supplement with something else to get enough electrolytes. I also find that my stomache tolerates accelerade well, even when I'm pegged and my stomache does not want anything in it.

If you haven't tried it yet, you should pick up a tin and experiment with it during a hard group ride or low priority race.

    Purchased At:REI
Strengths:Consistant energy flow, Reduction in cramping, Consistant Recovery affects
Weaknesses:Never quite mixes fully. Will leave a film (don't use in a Camelbak). Tastes like an energy drink
    Similar Products Used:H2O, Gatorade, Powerade
Bottom Line:Works as described, Can be drank at either room temp or cold, but I prefer it ice cold. The mix will leave a film on everything, from your tounge to your water bottle, and is very hard to wash off - do not use in your camelbak. It provides a very consistent flow of energy which is necessary for Epic rides or XC racing.

    Strengths:cheap,works fine for long rides.
Weaknesses:too heavy, taste not that great, very hard to dissolve, very difficult to clean the bottle after use.
Similar Products Used:gaterade, power bar endurance, Carbofuel.
    Bike Setup:sugar 3
Bottom Line:I bought three cans of different flavors because the cheap price, the biggest complain I have is it's very difficult to be dissolved and also left residue in bottles or camelbak, pain in the butt to clean them up, look out for the nasty stuff grow inside the tube even I thought they were washed clean. They taste ok, a bid too sweet and acid for me. very heavy compare to Powerbar Endurance, which I switched to, and will never to go back to this.

Bottom Line:I really did notice the boost from this product during rides. Previously I'd bring water and energy gel. Accelerade made a noticeable improvement in energy level through the ride. Post ride recovery is too hard to judge. I use Accelerade on every ride now, two scoops in a big bottle, and water only in the hydration pack. I'm addicted.

    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $22.00
Purchased At:Orpheus's Bike Shop somewhere in SF
Strengths:This product does exactly what is preaches. Superior hydration, excellent carb content and useful protein in the correct ratio for sustained endurance.
Weaknesses:If you want to be finicky, the residue in your water bottles isn't very nice but its nothing really.
Unavailable in Thailand and if were, GNC (the likely distributor) would probably charge an arm and a leg for it like they do their whey protein..extortion it is.
Similar Products Used:Extran, gatorade, cytomax, Endurox R4, and local Thai energy drinks ie. KratinDaeng (RedBull), M-sport and Sponsor electrolyes. Its definately better than the local stuff and just seems to give more of boost than the more well known brands.
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight, XTR, Duke100, race set up.
Bottom Line:This is the only drink mix that actually re-energises tired muscles and helps maintain the endurance needed in mtb XC racing, road bike racing and triathlon.
I've given samples to various riding buddies, racing folk here and they all can't believe that it really works.
5 chillies all round cus it's taste isn't that bad, although have never tasted dirty socks like previous comments have mentioned and 5 chillies for value. Ideal for intensive riders/racers and for normal recreational riding as well.

    Similar Products Used:Cytomax, HammerGel, Gu
Bike Setup:2002 Trek Fuel 100 with 2005 Manitou Minute Two.
Bottom Line:This drink works really good, and if you can stand the taste and the acid content then go ahead and try it. It felt quite heavy to the stomach and did not fully enjoyed my rides. I am pretty sure this drink is meant for heave workout use.

Strengths:Does a good job of hydration.
Weaknesses:Tastes terrible, too heavy on the electrolytes and leaves a nasty residue in my bottles.
    Similar Products Used:Extran and Enervit
    Bike Setup:Cannondale
Bottom Line:I find on long hard rides that I get salt crystals forming on the front of my legs from this and the protein is not a neccasry component. Taste is less then spectaclar. I will stick with Enervit and Extran both better products.

    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $17.00
Strengths:Low sugar, 4:1 carbo to protein ratio
Weaknesses:Takes a minute or two to disolve in water
Similar Products Used:Cytomax, Gatorade, Crank e-Fuel
    Bike Setup:Specialized M2
Bottom Line:I run, bike, and swim, and have found that drinking accelerade before and during my workouts is like putting nitrous in a car, it really makes you GO!. My times have steadily been dropping. This is one of the few drinks with protein in it. I figure, muscles are made of protein and they need protein to grow. I then ran accross this study published on active.com
which states cyclists get between 29%-40% better performance when drinking accelerade over gatorade.

    Purchased At:Red Rocks Cyclery
Strengths:The new flavors are fantastic! Accelerade goes down smooth and leaves no after taste whether it is hot or cold. I definetly can notice a higher level of endurance when compared to something like Extran, Cytomax or Enervit. I have been using the product for 2 years, and have had success with it racing cyclocross, doing the Leadville 100, criteriums and everyday training. I think that anyone that eliminates all the marketing hype, and tests these products for themselves will see that Accelerade is easily 2 steps ahead of the competition!
    Weaknesses:It's not free!
Similar Products Used:Extran, Cytomax, Enervit, TeamPro2 Endurance, Twin Lab Hydra Fuel

    Favorite Trail:Reno-Flag-Bear
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $20.00
    Purchased At:performancebike.com
    Strengths:Improved endurance, no insulin spikes
Weaknesses:Taste can take a few rides to get used to. Once you're used to it, you crave it.
    Similar Products Used:Cytomax, Extran, Revenge
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Blur w/XTR FOX RLC 100
Bottom Line:I've raced using Cytomax, Extran and Revenge for years, Accelerade definitely allows for stronger performance especially toward the end of a race. While anecdotal, I have forgotten the Accelerade for races twice over the past season and both times my performance suffered greatly. In addition, I have begun using Accelerade for indoor base training rides and have noticed a significant improvement of wattage (for me, AeT = 140 bpm, LT = 167bpm, Racing = 170-180, Max = 190), I have improved from 220W to 270W at AeT over a period of 2 months. The 4-1 carb-protein ratio reduces insulin spikes typical of other high glycemic drinks and fits well into the Paleo, South Beach or Zone diets. Bottom line, using Accelerade (and Endurox for recovery) you will lose weight and improve power while in training, and you can stay at high intensity pace longer in racing.
