I work at a bike shop and we use it for almost everything. It works great for cleaning parts, just about anything off of a frame, knives, tools, etc. The only time we use anything else is speed degreaser for discs and citrus degreaser for really bad stuff (however it leaves an oily residue). I strongly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great general purpose cleaner. Oh, and rumor has it that it's what the Marines use to clean their rifles. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Only used it a few times as we had no stubborn degreaser problems back then. Then I started using them on my bikes since 1994 on a 1994 ($200/CAN) Consumers Distributing ATB 15-speed (went out of business in 1994), 1995 Raleight Matterhorn (that I used for all of 1995, 1996 even in snow up to 6" deep), 1996 GT Ricochet, 2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk and on my 2002 BMW 320i. It gets rid of grease, grunge, dirt, oil, squished bugs and WD-40 residue. It can be found almost anywhere at a low price. Hell, It works way better then the Finish Line EcoTech that came with the cleaner. The only really problem I have is the Simple Green takes a little longer to dry. Normally, I wait a few minutes after cleaning and drying the chain before lubing it. This allows the degreaser that has worked it way in between the pins and roller to air dry. The first time I used Simple Green I ended up with more lube on the floor then the chain. My usual way is to keep a diluted (with water! even better!) version of it in a little bin, along with some old toothbrushes. I use those to scrub most things. For a stronger solution, add more simple green, and for bad stuff, jsut spray it right out of the bottle. Never had a problem with it corroding rubber, plastic, or binding things. This stuff is the ultimate chain cleaner solution. My chain hygiene routine goes as follows:- Remove chain from bike (a master link helps a lot).- Drop chain into old plastic fruit juice jug.- Pour a bit of Simple Green into jug, not quite enough to cover the chain.- Add REALLY hot water (especially if using wax-based lubes), enough to just cover chain.- Cap jug and shake vigorously. Note the crud that floats to the top of the foam. Let stand for a while and shake again.- Pour out grunge, add hot water again, cap and shake. Repeat until water stays clean.- Repeat whole process again if necessary (or paranoid).- Air dry chain. Reinstall and relube.Best of all, it's dirt cheap when you buy the gallon jug! Skip the high-priced bicycle specific products, and buy Simple Green at the warehouse store instead. | Overall Rating: |

I've been using Simple Green to clean my chain for the past few months and while it dosn't cut grease like paint thinner, naptha etc it is much safer to use. Any way here is what to do. Get a chain with a disconecting link like Sachs or the Craig Superlink and when your chain needs a cleaning or just a lube simply remove it and place it in a tupperware container partly filled with SG. Close tightly and shake for a minute or two, then let it sit and shake again. Drain off the SG ( I let the dirt settle and re-use) and replase with hot water and shake. I do this a few times and then rinse the chain under hot water and then hang to dry while I do somthing else. After a bit I lube it with Boeshield T-9 and let dry overnight before wiping it down and reinstalling. Your chainrings and cogs will stay clean and your bike will shift like new. | Overall Rating: |

I use it to clean the chain with a bibox chain cleaner - great results. I also use it when I overhaul hubs, b.b.'s, headsets, etc. Only two complaints - if you use it on rims and pads, it tends to make 'em squeal. even if they are toed in properly. And, it doesn't work real well if you have real old nasty grease in a hub or bottom bracket whose consistency is a little harder than earwax. If that works then I guess I have enough degreaser to last through the year 2000. I've used Simple Green almost exclusively since my free bottle of bike-specific citrus degreaser ran out. It cost me $7 for a whole gallon which is at least an order magnitude cheaper than those citrus whatdayacallit. After using it for more than half a year now, I have these observations: 1) it doesn't dissolve grease as well as an organic solvent like paint thinner; 2) its smell becomes really annoying after a while (not so with citrus degreasers); 3) it's most effective when diluted with hot water. However, since it's so cheap and very effective, I can only recommend it. Just remember to use small portions and repeat many times instead of using half the jug. | Overall Rating: |

Simple Green, available from hardware, garden, janitorial, etc. stores, works well as a general purpose cleaner and degreaser for a bike. Citrus degreasers work better for heavy degreasing (but not general cleaning) jobs. However, pouring Simple Green into a large container to soak something in does not cost a fortune like it would with citrus degreaser (i.e. you can just use the soak method on a really nasty degreasing job).
You can also use it for cleaning floors, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. (the instructions suggest various dilutions with water for different uses). | Overall Rating: |

This stuff is a miracle product.. I use it for everything, including the floor in my apartment that hadn't been washed for 4 years. I have used it with great results on an old dirty chain, and regularly use it on my Rollerblade bearings. A 32oz bottle cost me about $5, and it will go a long way if you dilute it. You don't need to use it full strength. It smells pleasant, but only for the first few minutes, but it doesn't give you a headache or a brain aneurysm like paint thinner will. In addition to cutting grease, it's good for general all-around cleaning of your bike, and won't hurt the paint job. | Overall Rating: |

I totally agree with the previous poster. I can't understand why someone would go to the LBS and buy a 12oz. bottle of degreaser for $6.00 when they could have gotten a gallon of Simple Green for $9.00 at Costco or Price Club. Simple Green full-strength in a chain cleaner works great and if you spray the whole bike with the stuff and then hose off your bike will be sparkling clean. The stuff even smells pleasant.
Don't buy in to the bike-specific degreaser rip-off. | Overall Rating: |

Although not a bike specific product it works as well as the Finish Line and Pedros products made for this purpose. It also comes in a 64 oz concentrated bottle which last for ever if you dilute. I bought this size and remix it half and half with water in a spray bottle to clean chains, cassetes etc... The 64 oz bottle I bought at K-Mart cost me $6. It will last me longer than several hundred dollars of Finish Line degreaser. In addition, its bio-degradable. | Overall Rating: |
