    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Strengths:amazing cleaning power
    Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:citrus degreaser, speed degreaser
Bottom Line:Amazing at cleaning just about anything. I work at a bike shop and we use it for almost everything. It works great for cleaning parts, just about anything off of a frame, knives, tools, etc. The only time we use anything else is speed degreaser for discs and citrus degreaser for really bad stuff (however it leaves an oily residue). I strongly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great general purpose cleaner. Oh, and rumor has it that it's what the Marines use to clean their rifles.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Price Paid: $3.00
    Purchased At:Canadian Tire
Strengths:Inexpensive, cleans & degreases practically any & everything and safe for the environment.
Weaknesses:The scent isn't too bad, but could be a little bit better.
Similar Products Used:Castrol Heavy-Duty Automotive degreaser, WD-40 and Cutex nail polish remover.
Bike Setup:2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk, 1996 GT Ricochet.
Bottom Line:We first got this item when it was brand-new as a sample plastic container about 50-60mL back in 1990. Only used it a few times as we had no stubborn degreaser problems back then. Then I started using them on my bikes since 1994 on a 1994 ($200/CAN) Consumers Distributing ATB 15-speed (went out of business in 1994), 1995 Raleight Matterhorn (that I used for all of 1995, 1996 even in snow up to 6" deep), 1996 GT Ricochet, 2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk and on my 2002 BMW 320i. It gets rid of grease, grunge, dirt, oil, squished bugs and WD-40 residue. It can be found almost anywhere at a low price. It does what it says it'll do, it doesn't eat through your bike or skin and is safe for the environment.
It could come it a different scent, or maybe I'm just picky.
Bottom Line: It's the best in the business to buy!

Bottom Line:When your bike gets dirty, spray this stuff all over, let it sit a few seconds, and hose it off. Works great! The only drawback is that god awful smell! It's the same stuff a lot of janitors clean bathrooms with. It works great for cleaning bugs off your car too!

Strengths:VERY cheap. I bought three bottles of concentrate for $9.00 total, which make 5 gallons of simple green each.
Weaknesses:Doesn't take off all the dirt, but still does a great job. What it can't get off though, my Pedro's White Lightning takes care of.
    Bike Setup:Jamis Dakar XLT 1.0
Bottom Line:For about $0.80 a gallon when dilluted for light use (1 part simple green, 30 parts water) you can't beat it. Right now I'm using 15 parts water, but that still comes out to about 2.5 gallons a bottle.

Bottom Line:I'm going to disagree with Ben, this stuff works great in my Finish Line chain cleaner. Hell, It works way better then the Finish Line EcoTech that came with the cleaner. The only really problem I have is the Simple Green takes a little longer to dry. Normally, I wait a few minutes after cleaning and drying the chain before lubing it. This allows the degreaser that has worked it way in between the pins and roller to air dry. The first time I used Simple Green I ended up with more lube on the floor then the chain. The Simple green was still trap between the pins and rollers and was prevent the lube from binding to the chain.

Looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Plus you can get a gallon for 7 bucks as opposed to a small amount of the stuff you can buy at bike shops that doesn't work.

Bottom Line:it's been the best degreaser i've used. the foam helps you really wet and brush most of the components (especially the chain, deraillers, etc.). AND it's biodegradable. i think maybe an orange cleaner may be better, but you risk degreasing things you may not really want to degrease.

Weaknesses:The product didn't seem to work well in my finish line chain cleaner to clean off chain gunk. I've had much better results with Castrol Super Clean, which is cheaper, about 5 dollars a gallon compared to 8 for simple green.
Similar Products Used:Castrol Super Clean, Finish Line Degreaser
Bike Setup:Mongoose MGX that is used everyday for commuting. Ridden in all weather conditions, since I don't own or drive a motor vehicle.
Bottom Line:For the money I like Castrol Super Clean. Instead of having to let the simple green soak for extended periods of time the Super Clean works almost instantly. But if you are into unique pleasant smelling cleaners and have plenty of time the simple green does eventually work.

Similar Products Used:Performance Bike Clean-Safe concentrate which is totally useless.
    Bike Setup:Trek 4500 and Trek 800 Sport
Bottom Line:I'm using Simple Green spray foaming degreaser. I haven't cleaned my Trek 800 Sport in 6 months and this stuff removed even most caked on gunk. But I do have one warning. Do not buy Simple Green from your bike shop. You can buy the spray can of foaming degreaser at local auto parts store for about $3.00. If there's a difference between the can sold for $10.00 at bike stores and the can sold for $3.00 at auto parts stores, I can't find it. If you want to buy the $10.00 can just because it says bike on it, be my guest and waste your money. Five chilis for the quality of the product but, three chilis overall for trying to charge me so much at the bike shop.

    Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:all manner of expensive specialty crap
    Bike Setup:Specialized Allez, various upgrades
    Bottom Line:"Just buy it, stupid!"
It seriously works great, cheap, etc. I have never had a problem with it removing even the toughest chain buildup. For guynked-up components, I simply soak 'em for a night. takes the crap off without harming vital parts, leaves 'em smelling like pine trees (ha ha ha).
My usual way is to keep a diluted (with water! even better!) version of it in a little bin, along with some old toothbrushes. I use those to scrub most things. For a stronger solution, add more simple green, and for bad stuff, jsut spray it right out of the bottle. Never had a problem with it corroding rubber, plastic, or binding things. It washes away with water easily and evaporates fairly quick.
It's non-toxic, so it won't make you high.

I sprayed Simple Shit on, allowed it to sit atleat five minuts and tried to wipe off the lube and it had done absolutly nothing. We will not be using this in my shop. now the concentrate in the gallon Jugs is ok when used straight but the Bike specific stuff does not work, don't waste your money. NOT RECOMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although this stuff isn't the greatest on chain gunk, I've found another use that really makes it a worthwhile product. Spray this stuff on your rims while your washing your bike down. Let it set for a minute or two, then spray it off. All of the brake dust and dirt will rinse right off, eliminating the need to use a Scotch-Brite pad to get rid of V-brake squeal.

I purchased a gallon of Simple Green degreaser at my local Wal Mart store in Monrovia. I paid $7.99 for a gallon. Compare that w/ the mtn bike specialty degreaser products for 6 ounces @ $6.99. How does it work? It is perfect. It is biodegradeable and safe for the environment. But it leaves your drive train really shiny. All you need to do is pre-soak the parts, using a spray bottle. Then Brush a lil and Voila! It's clean. Rinse.

This stuff is the ultimate chain cleaner solution. My chain hygiene routine goes as follows:- Remove chain from bike (a master link helps a lot).- Drop chain into old plastic fruit juice jug.- Pour a bit of Simple Green into jug, not quite enough to cover the chain.- Add REALLY hot water (especially if using wax-based lubes), enough to just cover chain.- Cap jug and shake vigorously. Note the crud that floats to the top of the foam. Let stand for a while and shake again.- Pour out grunge, add hot water again, cap and shake. Repeat until water stays clean.- Repeat whole process again if necessary (or paranoid).- Air dry chain. Reinstall and relube.Best of all, it's dirt cheap when you buy the gallon jug! Skip the high-priced bicycle specific products, and buy Simple Green at the warehouse store instead.

I've been using Simple Green to clean my chain for the past few months and while it dosn't cut grease like paint thinner, naptha etc it is much safer to use. Any way here is what to do. Get a chain with a disconecting link like Sachs or the Craig Superlink and when your chain needs a cleaning or just a lube simply remove it and place it in a tupperware container partly filled with SG. Close tightly and shake for a minute or two, then let it sit and shake again. Drain off the SG ( I let the dirt settle and re-use) and replase with hot water and shake. I do this a few times and then rinse the chain under hot water and then hang to dry while I do somthing else. After a bit I lube it with Boeshield T-9 and let dry overnight before wiping it down and reinstalling. Your chainrings and cogs will stay clean and your bike will shift like new.

Select the engine degreaser (might even be SG) settting and hose down the drive mech. Then select wash and hose down the entire bike. Select rinse and do the same. Load the bike back on the carring rack for the air-dry trip home. Don't forget to re-lube everything when you get home. Works like a champ and saves time.

For my first Simple Green experience, I mixed up a 50/50 batch with hot water and let my chain soak in it for 20 minutes. Scrubbed it with a Park brush but was only able to get the exterior really clean. So I dunked the chain in some mineral spirits and the grime just flowed out. Simple Green is a far cry from mineral spirits for degreasing power, but I'm still looking for something that is less toxic yet still gets the job done.

I use it to clean the chain with a bibox chain cleaner - great results. I also use it when I overhaul hubs, b.b.'s, headsets, etc. Only two complaints - if you use it on rims and pads, it tends to make 'em squeal. even if they are toed in properly. And, it doesn't work real well if you have real old nasty grease in a hub or bottom bracket whose consistency is a little harder than earwax. Overall, however, simple green RULES, and is the only product I use to clean my bike.

I've used it on the chain and rims (with super fine carpenters 0000 steal wool) and in generally wiping down the bike. I was cleanig the chain because I'm about to try White Lighting. If that works then I guess I have enough degreaser to last through the year 2000. Only problem was, as my seven year old loudly declared what stinks at the top of the stairs to the basement where I was working, the oder can get to you. Not as bad as petroleum distilates though.

I was browsing the the Hall of Fame and couldn't figure what this would be.
Then after reading reviews I realized that I just bought a gallon of Simple Green at Sam's Club a few weeks ago. It got my chain cleaner than mineral spirits or bike degreaser. Even cleans grease off of carpet at about 10:1 dilution. Very good stuff!! Good value.

I switched from kerosene to Simple green when my yard began looking like a toxic waste dump and I had a surplus of gunky kerosene that is difficult to responsibly dispose of. I buy a gallon for $7.50 at either Home Depot or Costco and it lasts me at least six months, and I am a clean freak. I dispense SG with a spray bottle and I find it works best if you let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before degreasing your drivetrain.

I've used Simple Green almost exclusively since my free bottle of bike-specific citrus degreaser ran out. It cost me $7 for a whole gallon which is at least an order magnitude cheaper than those citrus whatdayacallit. After using it for more than half a year now, I have these observations: 1) it doesn't dissolve grease as well as an organic solvent like paint thinner; 2) its smell becomes really annoying after a while (not so with citrus degreasers); 3) it's most effective when diluted with hot water. However, since it's so cheap and very effective, I can only recommend it. Just remember to use small portions and repeat many times instead of using half the jug.

I agree with the others. $11 for a gallon of concentrate. That's a deal.
One thing, though. DON'T use it full strength. It works better mixed with
a little water. Hey, 50/50 green/water will degrease an engine. Your bike
isn't dirtier than a car engine is it?
Added benefit is that you can stop buying other cleaning products for the home
and use the money saved on your bike.

Simple Green general cleaner / degreaser.

Simple Green, available from hardware, garden, janitorial, etc. stores,
works well as a general purpose cleaner and degreaser for a bike. Citrus
degreasers work better for heavy degreasing (but not general cleaning)
jobs. However, pouring Simple Green into a large container to soak something
in does not cost a fortune like it would with citrus degreaser (i.e. you
can just use the soak method on a really nasty degreasing job).

You can also use it for cleaning floors, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. (the
instructions suggest various dilutions with water for different uses).

This stuff is a miracle product.. I use it for everything, including the floor
in my apartment that hadn't been washed for 4 years. I have used it with great
results on an old dirty chain, and regularly use it on my Rollerblade bearings.
A 32oz bottle cost me about $5, and it will go a long way if you dilute it. You
don't need to use it full strength. It smells pleasant, but only for the first
few minutes, but it doesn't give you a headache or a brain aneurysm like paint
thinner will. In addition to cutting grease, it's good for general all-around
cleaning of your bike, and won't hurt the paint job.

I totally agree with the previous poster. I can't understand why someone would go
to the LBS and buy a 12oz. bottle of degreaser for $6.00 when they could have gotten
a gallon of Simple Green for $9.00 at Costco or Price Club. Simple Green full-strength
in a chain cleaner works great and if you spray the whole bike with the stuff and then
hose off your bike will be sparkling clean. The stuff even smells pleasant.

Don't buy in to the bike-specific degreaser rip-off.

Although not a bike specific product it works as well as the Finish Line
and Pedros products made for this purpose. It also comes in a 64 oz
concentrated bottle which last for ever if you dilute. I bought this size
and remix it half and half with water in a spray bottle to clean chains,
cassetes etc... The 64 oz bottle I bought at K-Mart cost me $6. It will last
me longer than several hundred dollars of Finish Line degreaser. In addition,
    its bio-degradable.
