I am a road biker and take one major ride on the weekends of about 60 miles. To get a second ride in, mostly for aerobic purposes, I have a 10 mile flat route from my house and back I treat as time trial of sorts. I usually ride after work when it is light but because it gets dark too early decided to add some lights to my 3rd road bike and use it until it gets light again. Since most of the streets are lit with lights or nearby stores this tail light is more than adaquate for my needs. Various different mounting hardware. | | Weaknesses: | Not suitable for every bike - i have an aero seat post and there was no easy mount except if I put on the topeak seat bag, where I could use the clip that comes in the kit. I bought three of these and the only failure that I've had is a broken clip, which the LBS replaced without question. | | Similar Products Used: | Many different rear lights - you get pretty conscious when you get hit from behind by a car. It is bright, but that brightness is only apparent if you are within its narrow beam. A new set of batteries will be needed to get the best out of it, as the brightness starts to dim right from the word go. The unit is heavy and on several occassions the bracket has failed and the light has ended up pointing at the ground. But by far the worst bit is the switch, well the two switches, which independently control the upper and lower strips of LEDs. They each need to be pressed 5 times to cycle the light on and off, which soon gets a chore. The flashing mode is ill conceived, as the upper and lower strips of LEDs are not synchronised and flash at a slightly different rate. This means that all 10 LEDs are rarely on all at the same time and when the upper and lower set are flashing alternately, the light appears dim and steady from a distance.
I now have a Smart SuperFlash with a half watt Nichea LED and it is much better. Brighter, better angle of view, no nonsense on/flash/off switch, decent bracket and it weighs less too. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

cat eye customer service is great--theyll send you a brand new one if you send it back, but do you really want another 1000? well, maybe, IF they have fixed the problem, but since they haven't acknoledged the problem...
i'm told some of the newer ones have some internal bits made a little different and may hold the batteries tighter, so maybe they're okay...maybe.
don't use this light as your only taillight--use with a back-up. the cat-eye 600 is a fine light.

I find it to be a good looking, quality piece of equipment. I have ironically moved over to the TL LD600 because after a year of using the TL-LD1000 I have only had the need to use half it's light strenght. Unlike other designs this one gives the rider options - you can have half the lights working or the whole lot if necessary. It also has a good compact setup with waterproof features. | | Weaknesses: | The battery cap can become a liability in future as it relies on a twist to hold it in place after the attached rubber seal is compressed to give the battery compartment its waterproof feature. With regular use the rubber may disintegrate or lose its compressive state and allow the cap to pop open and fall off. As described by the other guys below, the bracket is an issue until I read the instructions again and found that the correct sized bracket must be used. When I switched from the SP-7 down to the SP-6 there was no further problem with the light drooping down from its fitted position. The correct rubber strip must also be used to allow the bracket to compress fully on the seatpost. If you look carefully both rubber strips are of different thicknesses. The supplied screw could have been made from stronger steel. I found that a good fitting screwdriver is the only thing that will prevent the screw head from deforming. If a bad screwdriver slips you risk damaging the head or injuring your hand. | | Similar Products Used: | Vistalite VL-700 and other Cateye tail lights. | | Bike Setup: | 2007 Cannondale Caffeine F1 Hardtail | | Bottom Line: | This tail light is worth every cent if used and set-up correctly. I did have initial problems when installing the light and most of my faults were from disregarding the instructions. Joe mentioned below that the light could be better if it had a "master switch" to control the on & off modes instead of scrolling through each light sequence. Well, when you want to switch the light off all you have to do is to hold the button down and it will switch off after a few seconds. This applies to both top and bottom rows. Lastly, you must use the correct bracket or the light will drop from its fitted position. Measure your seatpost and know which bracket to install. For most of us who ride on the road after dark you will understand that a good tail light is essential if you want to get home in one piece. Compared to other brands used previously the TL-LD1000 is not bad in terms of quality. This one is by far the best tail light available. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

$38.00 | | Strengths: | very bright, good weather seal, good looking, and easy to set up. | | Weaknesses: | there are a few: 1) the seat clamp while snug and doesn't get loose by itself, it should really have brass teeth to engage the angled sleeve rather than plastic at this price.. the light unit is heavy and might wear out the teeth on anything used more aggressively than a road bike... 2) they tend to kill alkaline batteries quickly, i switched to energizer rechargables and solved that problem... 3) worst saved till last, the buttons !! no master switch here ! the top row and bottom row are independently controlled by clicker buttons that must cycle thru all functions before u can put it off... very frustrating...there are so many occassions when u are tempted to press quickly multiple times to put it off and of course u go 1 too many which puts it back on !! grr... should have a master on/off.

It is highly waterproof, and well constructed. But the pro's stop there. | | Weaknesses: | After 2 weeks of regular commuting in Denver,CO, the light begins to fail. Some connection obviously comes loose cos the light becomes very dull, until you tap with your hand to return it to full brightness. This is a safety concern.
Secondly, even with clamp at full tightness, the clamp comes loose and rotates downward so light isn't pointing straight at cars. LED's no longer visible.
This happened on both of 2 lights which I purchased.
| | Bottom Line: | If you do very light commuting this light is perfect. But if you hop off sidewalks onto the road, or go over bumpy ground, this light will eventually fail one way or another due to the shock. They have not designed it to cope with everyday riding.
