Bottom Line:Alot of these reviews say this headset is fine within the first year, yes, it is fine withing the FIRST year, however it appears to have a self destruct button as it now wobbles after EVERY ride (yes i had it installed properly) which is caused by play from the bottom cup. Very disapointing, wouldnt buy again as i lik my parts to last a bit longer then a year and a half:/

COnsidering its low price, i'd buy another if i have any problems down the road. I can't see why anyone would spend 100$ on a headset when there are headsets like this one out there for a fraction of the price. This thing deserves each and every one of the 5 hot turds i'm awarding.

Bottom Line:Very good headset, it lasted very long, the only reason it broke is because I needed one more spacer so the headset could really be tight, so it wasn't 100% tight it moved a bit so when I went off drops it destroyed the bearings. I doubt anything would have broke if I would have maintained it properly. I know 2 people who do have this headset, and WTB could make the bearings stronger.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:It keeps the steerer tube from falling out of the bike, but that is really the star nut and the top cap.
Weaknesses:It is a pain to work on, it gets dirt and water in it very easily. In mine the steerer tube rattles around even if the top bolt is tightened to the point where it is hard to turn. I have had problems with this headset from the first month I had it.
    Similar Products Used:CHRIS KING
Bike Setup:GT I-drive 1.0, 98 Jr. T(don't laugh), RF next cranks and bar, XT components.
Bottom Line:This headset is probably one of the worst products ever made for mountain biking. In fact I don't know that I have ever used anything made by WTB that I didn't have some sort of problem with. Back to the headset, The first time that I took this thing apart I was wondering why it wasn't designed better. Taking it apart sucks, putting it back together sucks, and regreasing the bearing three times a season really really sucks. The headset that I have somehow is out of shape and it ovalized my head tube on my original GT frame. Now the only thing that I will use for a headset is a Chris King, Everything that King makes never gives a problem. The only reason that I still have the WTB headset is so I can throw it into the 70 ton press at school.

Bottom Line:This is a very good headset in my opinion. It does all the things a headset should do: maintain grease, be serviceable, attach your fork to your head tube, and allow you to turn smoothly. If installed and maintained properly, I really can't see any problem with it at all. It should last forever if you ride cross country. Obviously there are better choices for riding big drops with a Monster T fork. duh.

Bottom Line:It's only marginally better than el-cheapo headsets. I wouldn't pay more than $30 new for the WTB Momentum headset w/ GreaseGaurd. The reason is that it offers nothing more in way of performance than a generic AHead system. The GreaseGuard is just a novelty on the headset, really. Real performance is in the bearing races, and the bearings themselves. That's where WTB needs to put there effort in.

Strengths:Hmm, tricky this. For the Greaseguard headset, none, for the cheaper cartridge one, ease of service, long life
Weaknesses:The greaseguard model was just dismal
Similar Products Used:Shimano headsets, ritchey headsets
Bottom Line:I bought and fitted a greaseguard headset to my Marin Pine Mountain. Found it very quick to loosen, religiously pumped grease in it after evry ride, regular servicing, and it still died within a year, corroded races, everything.
So I fitted the cheaper cartridge momentum headset, and it wotks a dream. Slam in new bearings, the cups never rust, it works, easy to service, no fuss set up, perfect. I'm going to gice the greaseguard 1 for value, 1 for performance, but 5x5 for the cartridge one, so the review gets and average of 3. I liked the cartridge one so much, I got another to fit my Spesh FSR as well.

Bottom Line:After 6 months of light to moderate continuous riding I had to replace the bottom cartridge bearings because they were torn to hell. It seems the bearings had no protection from the outside and every speck of dirt seemed to lodge itself up in there. I realize dirt is a given especially in that area, but I don't consider my riding especially strenuous on components. Bottom line, I'd hate to see how quickly the bearings wore out if I were trail riding on a regular basis.

It takes just a couple minutes to put some grease in, wipe the old grease off and get the O rings back on. I wanted a Race Face or Chris King headset, but they sell for $100+ here in Canada. I thought I was settling for the WTB, but the Grease Guard has made me a believer. I'll wrench on my bike, but maintaining the headset was something I never did on my other bikes, as I didn't want to hassle with pulling the forks off. Now I don't have to. I haven't had any troubles with the O rings, either, as I just threw a couple Lizard Skins over top. This is an excellent product.

wtb's folks at the sea otter gave me new o rings, but they did'nt fit either. i've heard that they've resolved this problem with their latest offerings, but this headset has been so trouble free i see no immediate reason to replace it.

Bottom Line:I am surprised by the number of negative reviews this headset has received. I have had absolutely no problems with it. I installed it when I built up my frame and have not had to do anything to it ever except when I've switched forks out. I suspect that many people have problems with their headsets loosening because of improper installation. If everything is not seated fully, it will of course loosen upon impact. The bearings may also need to be changed if the headset had been ridden for a while then tore apart or moved to another bike. I like the grease guard system for lubing and have had no problems with it. The cleanest way to service the headset is to role the seals off, lube, wipe, clean the seals, then role the seals back on. There are lighter headsets out there, but this one is the most servicable.

I've only had this headset for a couple of months but I have had absolutely no problems with it yet. The steering is extremely smooth and I have pounded my bike on numerous rock garden rides and have yet to have the headset even show a hint of slop. It does exactly what you would expect of a headset stay smooth and tight making you forget it is even there. I've read rave reviews about king headsets but for the f$#@%!* price of a king it should steer the bike for you. No thanks, here is one of the places that you can save some coin and use it where you will notice an appreciable difference like the drive train or disc brakes etc.. hell it even comes in different colors like a king, but at $60.00 bucks less. If you want a headset that is inexpensive and once it is installed you can forget about it then I highly recommend this one. If you are a weight weenie, or want everyone to oogle and gawk at your (overpriced) king headset that does the same exact thing as this one for $60.00 more then don't buy. For my money I'll take the WTB MOMENTUM "C" CARTRIDE headset. Great Value / does exactly what it is supposed to 5 flamming turds all around.

    Date Reviewed: December 4, 2000
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Taken off used DBR X-2
Strengths:This is a follow-up to the review immediately below. Unfortunately there are numerous WTB "momentum" headsets (comp, greaseguard, etc) and only one mbtr.com category for them. Below I reviewed the "momentum comp" which is total junk, but now I would like to offset my scathing review by looking at the "momentum greaseguard" which is a much (!) better product.
Weaknesses:Tapered aluminum shim in top race can be very difficult to remove
