    Date Reviewed: June 27, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Soft, big, cushy grips for riders with larger sized hands.
    Weaknesses:Poor grip when wet.
    Bike Setup:Turner RFX
Bottom Line:This will be a review of the Oury lock-on grips. I've been a big fan of Oury grips and have been using them for a long time... I've always loved the softness and large diameter of the grips.

I was a little disappointed to find that the lock-on version of the Ourys do not have the same softness nor feel of the regular Ourys. I believe the underlying hard plastic is to blame for the decreased cush. That being said, they still feel a lot better than my Ruffian lock-on grips, which seemed a little too small for my hands.

As I've said before, I've used Ourys for a long time. And while I loved them, I found two faults with Oury grips, one problem which was addressed by the lock-ons. The first was their tendency to slip and move around on my handlebars, even more so than other traditional grips that I've tried. The lock-ons by their design addresses this problem. The other is poor grip when wet. The large, smooth blocks offer little friction when wet. The Ruffians were much better in this regard. So for wet weather rides, I usually swap out the Ourys for the Ruffians. But since I ride in So Cal, riding in the wet usually isn't a big concern.

Bottom Line, Ourys are great. I had considered wiring my grips to my bars, but when the lock-on versions came out I ended up buying those instead. The grips immobility on my bars more than makes up for the slight decrease in softness. If you've got big hands, the Ourys are a great grip, either way and well worth the money.

    Favoriate Trail:Kanuga, Paris Mountain
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $25.00
    Purchased At:Frank's
Strengths:Grippy, soft and comfy, Lock-on option, colors with the non-locking version
Weaknesses:Hard and slippery until broken in (about 2 or 3 rides). No color options on lock-ons
Similar Products Used:Coda, some other stock grips, old huffy grips :)
Bike Setup:Jamis Dakar, thomson stem, monkeylite bars, oury lock-ons
Bottom Line:I ride the Lock-on version. I like them a lot. They're much thicker than the other grips that I had. Grips get tacky after they're broken in and feel very secure. Haven't had any problems with tearing or slipping AT ALL.

Combine these with a good pair of gloves and your hands won't hurt even after long bumpy rides.

Bike Setup:FELT Rockshox dart2,m540clipless,shimano stock derailers/chain FELT Bars/head/post facade saddle.
Bottom Line:After 2 days and 4 goes at putting them on, I ended up ripping them off ( which was easy coz they just would not stop twisting on my bars ) i used Turps to clean the bars and just chucked em back on, for some reason they just went on easy and stayed on very firm no wire needed. i am a BMXer and new to MTB scene and these grips provide alot of control and comfort similar to a Motorcycle grip. would recomend to anyone with wide hands and if u are getting sore wrists on a smoother grip.

Strengths:Very low amount of slip on bars. Great in any weather. Sticks to hands with or without gloves.
    Weaknesses:Big for small hands.
    Bike Setup:08 GF HKEK
Bottom Line:Grat grip for big hands. Just the right amount of "sticky-ness" for any conditions. Soft but just a little too big for me. I wish they made them in a smaller size. I would ride these grips forever if they didn't make my hands hurt after just a few miles. With that said, if you are looking for a bigger grip that will work great in any weather that is soft and sticks good, buy them.

Strengths:Think, good padding, comes in many colors
Weaknesses:Keep comming of the bike or twisting; there is always a problem with them.
    Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro
    Bike Setup:08 Rockhopper
Bottom Line:These would be decent grips if they wouldn't keep comming of all the time. One grip installed just fine and held up for a few rides but then came of. The other one just wouldn't stay on the bike to begin with. I tried just pulling them on, then I used Hairspray, then I tried 3M Glue, then finally weatherstriping glue and on the 3rd ride they finally broke on their ends.

If these grips were as solid as my original grips that came with my bike i'd give these a 4/5, but with all the fuss and troubles i don't think these are worth the money.

I'm willing to try the ODI lock-on grips (also from OURY) and hope for the best....

Strengths:These are cushy grips, they look good and come in lots of colors, they are easy to put on, they seem to wear well, and they are a good price. Definitely not slippery, but not a gross tacky feeling either.
Weaknesses:Uh, none really. I guess they pick up dirt easily, especially if you have lighter-coloured ones. Maybe a little tricky to get on, just be patient and use some hairspray.
Similar Products Used:Canadian Tire / Schwinn replacements
    Bike Setup:32:18 SS
Bottom Line:I do not have any reason to consider buying other grips. If you really feel you need lock-ons, maybe you should find an alternative to the Oury. That said, I put these on with some hairspray, smoothed the air pockets out (protip: this is easier with the clear ones cause you can see what you are doing), and they haven't budged after stomping up dozens and dozens of hills on my SS.

Id be hesitant to use rubber cement to install as im not sure what that would do to the finish on the carbon bar i have. I used a golfing trick, double sided tape and some grip solvent and slid the grips on like i would a grip on my graphite shafted driver. Atleast i know it wont damage the bar. One word of warning, these grips are a bit thicker than any others ive seen or tried. If you have small hands these might not be the best option.

    Strengths:Nice thick grip.
Weaknesses:Knob on the end. Some may like this to keep their hand from sliding off the end. It's different than most grips.
    Bike Setup:SC Superlight
Bottom Line:Installation tips: I have a carbon bar. I ended up using rubber cement - which you can get anywhere school supplies are sold. (Hairspray didn't work.) Rubber cement is cheap ($2-3) and easier to find than the 3M stuff Oury recommends.

It seems to be holding up well. I also like the idea of rubber cement because I know I can get it off the bar without too much work when the time comes.

1 - Insert nickel into grip and push to end. (Great tip from someone else - keeps the rubber from pushing into the bar end.)
2 - Put a healthy slathering inside the grip and then a lighter coat on the bar. When you put the coat on the bar, do this fast because it starts to set up fast.
3 - Slide the grip onto the bar and position. If the grip gets stuck on the way on, pull off quickly, clean up the surfaces and try again.
4 - Use a rag to wipe up any excess. The rubber cement rubs off easily.
5 - Repeat for other grip.
6 - Wait for ? (I waited overnight but rubber cement dries fast so, perhaps an hour or two.)

I suppose if you torque real hard on the grips, this stuff may come loose. I haven't had the problem. The rubber cement grips well to the rubber grip and to the carbon bar.

These Ourys rock! highly comfortable, soft, and sticky! Note that the lockons are good at what they do but that means the grips wear out faster b/c it's gripping so well - after 3 rides the edges of my grips are showing signs of wear, we'll see how long they last. just like automotive racing tires - the best and grippest won't be the ones that last the longest. overall great product!
