Date Reviewed: January 5, 2008
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:This's for the Escape08, What can I say , well the frame is realy cool.
Weaknesses:The down grade in components is definitely a back step for Haro maybe they should cut cost else where (like Management wages) instead of components.
Bike Setup:Escape08 Frame, for now.
Bottom Line:The Haro Escape is a well designed bike and has potential to be a very sweet ride if you’re willing to spend some cash to upgrade components. It seem Haro decision makers a more interested in their hip pocket than the product that brings in the DOLLARS!

Weaknesses:The cranks are kinda weak but other than that it is a great bike.
Bottom Line:A great bike for getting into serios mountain biking. You can't go wrong with it and it will not fail you.

Purchased At:Velosite
Strengths:Very strong frame(it goes with higher models 8.2 and 8.3 as well), well-designed geometry for street/4X(but occured to be too short for me). As for stock parts (year 2005) I enjoyed truvativ cranks and bars while other parts were not so durable
Weaknesses:Frame has no weaknesses at all
Seat wore out short, as well as rims did. Fork has no oil so it's very unsensitive and you'd rather replace it. What's more... Mechanical brakes are suitable only for city ryde and not for mountains
Similar Products Used:Some cheap bikes
Bike Setup:Marz MZ comp fork, Deore, Truvativ, Alex DM-18 rims, Kenda tires, Hayes MX-2 brakes
Bottom Line:This bike is great if you are just beginning practicing in MTB, though you are welcome to put other parts on a frame and use it more seriousely. In any case it's one of the best choices for a price in a market, I'll highly recommend it to anyone

Strengths:The Brilliant Frame
Weaknesses:The crappy components
Bike Setup:SRAM X9, Juicy Sevens, Race Face Diabolus cranks, Race Face carbon risers, Mavic 819 Discs, Hope XC hubs, Thomson stem
Bottom Line:This was my first bike, and it was a brilliant (and lucky, as I knew Jack about bikes) choice. It's taken all the inevitable knocks, drops and flips that come with learning to ride, including a huge crash that pretty much destroyed the rims, forks and bars. The frame stayed straight as a die.
As the admittedly crappy original components wore out or broke, I spent the money on some decent replacements and I continue to love this bike. I'm not a downhiller, or a racer (I'm 47, for Christ's sake), but some of our tracks round here are pretty rugged and this bike never looks like baulking. Yes, it's heavy, but so am I. If I were really serious about grams, I'd go on a diet.

Looks like I paid a fortune for it compared to you guys in the US, so it dips out a bit on value, but get one at the right price, throw away the Quad brakes and the deraileurs and have yourself a good time!

Strengths:This is for the 2007 base model escape. Solid yet lite frame, nice sticky tires, marzocci shocks with lock out feature and 120mm of travel are pretty plush and nice for climbing but i dont know how they'll hold on constant drops will update in a little while.
Weaknesses:Brakes rub, bent the truvativ crank the first day out(shop replaced that day), second day out rear derailer shifted into rear wheel spokes and broke off(shop replaced that day) rims spokes came loose really quickly/out of true

Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Rose City Cycle
Strengths:This bike has one of the strongest frames I've ever ridden. The rear drop outs look bullit-proof, the stays are super stiff, and the head tube is super-sturdy. The 8.1 came with an excellent assortment of components for the price.
Weaknesses:The bike was great for the first year. However, I have recently gotten into freeriding. The stock wheels needed truing way to often and I was forced to upgrade. I bent my third chainring and replaced it with a bashguard. Obviosly, the stock MZ Comp fork had to be replaced to take hits. The chain seems to have too much slap, but that can be remedied by removing some links.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock Pro, Trek Session 77
Bike Setup:Mavic XM 117 wheels, Sherman Slider Plus, Race Face bashguard, 8" front rotor. Otherwise stock.
Bottom Line:This is a must-buy for anyone who is first starting to ride. The components are great for the money, and the frame is rock-solid. When you pick a riding style and have the cash, you can upgrade and adapt this bike to fit andything from downhill to all-mountain. The bike climbs great, feels nimble on the trail, descends with great control, and inspires confidence in the air. You can't go wrong with this bike!

Favorite Trail:O'dell park trail "Roots & Rocks"
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:ebay, where else?
Strengths:Amazing, after 2 years of some harsh riding on this bike and how does it hold up, i'm clueless, I've had no problems since last review i posted here.
Upgraded to a Marzocchi Z1 Freeride with 2004 lowers 2003 uppers, with 130mm travel and ETA...WOW Blow me away, the difference is incredible (Got it on ebay for 180$ it was MINT!)
Weaknesses:I've had no problems what so ever...
Similar Products Used:Specialized P1 P2 P3 nothing compares to the Haro Escape series...
Bike Setup:Put some maxxis high roller 2.5's on the front and back, feel wicked!
Marzocchi Z1 Freerides, fork tracks more than my friends 3000$ bike!
removed a couple links from chain so it doesn't "slap" as much, 100% better :)
Bottom Line:I have the 2004 Haro escape 8.1 and I prefer the 2004's over the 2005's as they kinda skimpped on the components.
No skimping on the 04's and its noticeable!
I look at it and I swear it's just a bike that calls to be ridden hard!
I use it for downhill mostly, little street stuff some dirtjumps 4 feet max, this thing is the all terrain BOMB!
I would gladly pay 600$ for one of these, I got it for 350$ i'm not gonna complain!

Great for anyone on a budget, extremely reliable, I took care of it myself, never brought it to the bike store for anything in 2 years and it runs smoother than some bikes that come out of those stores!

The 2004's are getting hard to find, if you see one and your looking for a bike, I recommend grabbing it before your kicking yourself the day after someone else buys it!

Don't buy it if your doing just town riding...unless you plan on putting street tires on it, THIS IS NO TOURING BIKE!

It's a rocket on 2 wheels, and maintains itself, can't get any better can you?

Only problem i've encountered is people watching me like a hawk as most robbers would like to see this in their garage! People have tried to steal mine 2 times already, although neither of them knew how to ride a bike as they dumped it on my front lawn...

Anyway, if you don't have a grand to blow on a bike, pick one of these up for 350-600$ you cannot go wrong!

***INCREDIBLE!!!***

Purchased At:wheel life cycles
Strengths:Great for any beginner rider. Light in comparison to other hardtail frames, and handles very well in the air. So far, the frame has been very durable. It took whiteface no problem. UNBELIEVABLY VERSITLE.
Weaknesses:Fork is very short. Not very adjustable. If you are planning on really DHing, you are going to want a new fork. However, upgrading the fork throws off the geometry.

Also, the stock brakes are very bad for DHing, after 1 day they will wear out. Stock tires obtain flats while freeriding very easily.

Seat is uncomfortable after a long day of riding.
Similar Products Used:treck, kona hardtails
Bike Setup:e thirteen chain guard (great)
new pedals
8" rotors front and back
Hope M4 brakes (sick)
Bottom Line:Perfect for the all-around rider. If you are not a downhiller, and you can spend a little money on minor upgrades, i would deffinately reccomend this bike. Haro makes great frames, but with this frame composed of alluminum i am afraid that anything over a 6ft drop will crack the rear triangle off.

Bottom Line:this is a follow up reveiw on my bike. the frame is still bombproof but a lot of other thing have broken or just not impressed me. the crank are horrible cant believe i bent them off a 5 foot drop. the bars and stem are really bad too but when i upgraded to my diablos bars and supergo stem it made all the diference in the world in stiffness there. i had replaced the marzocchi with manitou stance flows and that was a big mistake. i blow the rebound out of them in 4 months so i put an old psylo sl on there and there 10 times better. i love this bike for sure just need a lot of upgrades. i wish i would have just built it up from the frame but o well. have fun riding and it still get 5 flames

Strengths:Don't have to worry about shocks bottoming out on you at any time even off of 3 foot drops.Frame is 100% stronger than any army tank in the world!!!(maybe not quite but...close)loosen the fork all the way and oil it and its perfect
Weaknesses:Rear tire rubs left part of the frame if you pedal hard and fast sometimes but it just takes a little bit of adjusting and your back at the trails!I broke the cage on rear deraileur (my fault, not bikes)hit something and it bent causing the chain to skip at times.

Bottom Line:this bike is not to be under estimated!colors are nice (personnaly don't mind them at all)its amazing on the hills it will take anything and everything you can throw at it!but it is not so fun to drive on pavement or cement cause the tires are pretty big and knobby which makes it a little bit of a rough ride.I will be thinking about buying new fork next spring (rockshock pshylos)for bit more smoothness but overall i got this thing for 350$ c'mon thats insane! So get this bike and you won't regret it one single bit

Strengths:dialed geometry, strong frame, looks cool (at least that's what people tell me), Haro heritage, price!, performance!
Weaknesses:components(what do you expect, you can't even upgrade the fork for less than the cost of the whole bike!, WHICH IS GOOD). Fork sucks but adequate for some, same with brakes. Semi-high standover hieght, not all bad though.
Bike Setup:stock. just thrashin' around waiting for things to break, to justify investing double the bikes cost back into it.
Bottom Line:If you want to ride on a low budget and get the maximum amount of pleasure per dollar, look no further you've found your bike. I have a blast on this bike. It rails like a motha'. Descends like a brick and climbs... well, like a light brick (at least). All kidding aside though it's not that bad climbing with this thing. Only on the REALLY steep stuff do I wish I was on my XC bike. Anyother time the Haro and I are one and loving it. Can't wait to upgrade the fork and brakes, the really only awful parts of the bike. I say awful for the downhills where you want a strong plush fork with powerful brakes. If this bike had the nice fork and brakes it would definetely get 5 chilis but it doesn't so it won't. Just fine otherwise. So anyways go check it out and have fun. I don't care

Strengths:Great strenghth thanx to the hydraformed t-tube, guzzets and drop out configuration. good h-tube angle for descents which require good forks so the bike won't buck you on large bumps. Good climber with lockout forks.
Weaknesses:fattys don't fit fine, 2.5 tires rub on turns and hard pedaling. Crappy WALMART color scheme, better colors for 05' no standard chain guide holes, but it's not exclusively a downhiller so it's ok.
Similar Products Used:SURLY Instigator also rented some FS and other HT bikes from kona, cannondale, gary fisher and gt

Purchased At:built it up
Strengths:I can not say how a stick 8.1 performs. I bought the frame stripped down (new) and specd it out myself. After reading other reviews regarding shifting, ect. So this is not a stock 8.1. After building it up all I can say is this bike rocks, no doubt. Lighter than stock. Shifts like a dream. Great for fast XC ridding or using it for plwong through whatever. I know most bikers look for great deals and now that Ebay has grown like it has I was able to take my time and get all parts new or take offs cheap. I would estimate I may have about $150 more in this bike than what it cost stock. But check out the specs for and 8.1
Weaknesses:I would guess the main weakness are the drive train selection it is specd with from the factory. The frame is bullet proof.
Similar Products Used:All my other bikes are FS and a hardtail that is meant strictly for XC
Bike Setup:Shimano LX rear der. Shimano XT front der. Shimano LX shifters. Avid brake levers with Shimano Mechanical Disc Brakes. Sun Ryhno Lite Rims with WTB hudbs an WTB 2.3 tires. Easton EA50 seatpost. Easton EA70 stem. Kore DH riser bars. Pro Grip handlebar grips. Sella Itallia seat. Shimano XT cassette. Manitou Black E Comp fork. Race Face Crank. Kore DH platform pedals.
Bottom Line:You can not really complain when you build the bike the way you want it. Since I do not do alot of hucking I set it up more for XC. The bike will still handle the rough stuff but that is not really what I am into. It shifts great, rides great. Is lighter than the stock ones and looks trick. I have not rode a stock one so I can not really say anything about the value. I will be giving this 5 Flames because It works great. Most decent bikes can be made great when you set them up like you want. Most companies make great frames like 8.1 but skimp on the specs to keep the price were us working stiffs can afford to buy a bike. It took some time and patience but when it was all said and done I love the final result. This bike rocks.
